I have a 2010 Cayman S PDK. I bought it new and it has been my daily driver for 13 years. It is currently at 131,000 miles. It has been pretty reliable. In all that time I have had the following issues: 1. Oxygen sensor failure (fixed under warranty) 2. Belt tensioner came off when retaining bolt sheared off block (fixed under warranty, dealer had never seen this failure before) 3. CV joints 4. Upper front strut mounts 5. PDK mount/bushing 6. Rear engine mounts 7. Very slow leak from power steering rack 8. Headliner came down and had to be replaced Basically, after more than a decade in the Texas heat, many rubber items (mounts, CV, bushings) have needed to be replaced.

Still have my Porsche Cayman 987.1 base 2.7 Liter from 2008 150.000 miles on the clock and still running great most important is regular services no rust painting like new all leather interior option painting color grey. The base engines are the best of the crop and also have a better sound then the S version ! 15 years old and the best designed Porsche they ever made !
Just a quick tip. I bought an 8 year old Boxster S and the water pump started to fail. My car had 11,000 miles on it so it definitely is a time component. When it starts to leak, it'll leak on the belt which makes you think you have a slipping belt because of the noise. The water pump can be purchased from the company that supplies Porsche. DO NOT BUY A PORSCHE WATER PUMP. I examined the used and new parts and they are exactly the same. Total WP replacement for me cost $600 parts and labor. Last thing. I bought a new thermostat to have installed with the water pump and pro mechanic says don't touch thermostat if it's working.
Thanks for your tip Michael it is greatly appreciated it! 👍🏼 Where do you typically get your parts? FCP Euro and Pelican Parts tend to be excellent resources!
I’m an ex Porsche technician, the 2.7 is a great engine, more reliable than the 3.4, does not suffer from bore scoring. All Caymans suffer from the air/oil separator and cracked coolant expansion reservoirs, together with water pumps
I’m an ex Porsche technician, the Cayman in all versions is great fun to drive, handles great, has excellent brakes. Unfortunately the car is let down by numerous faults derived from cost cutting, there are a lot VW parts inside, the interior quality is very poor for such an initially expensive car, and the mechanical issues are again unjustified for the cost of the car. As an example, The original water pump has a plastic impeller which disintegrates, I used to fit aftermarket water pumps with a metal impeller, never had one fail. It is a fair comment that many of my customers complained about the overall reliability when compared with the purchase price. I don’t recall any of my customers changing the oil as Porsche recommended, all did at least an intermediate oil change, due to our hot climate here in Greece, I advised my customers to change the oil at 5000 miles, everyone of them did so, we had virtually no issues with bore scoring and again because of the hot climate, we checked the coolant reservoir at every oil change.
Great video, my 987.1 has had all of these problems except the water pump. I also needed to replace the starter because it was having that wheezing issue. I fixed everything on my Porsche from the air oil separator to plugs and coils, shifter cables (upgraded to the Numeric cables, they are great) starter and climate control buttons myself in my garage. The car is very easy to work on and nothing was very expensive. (OK, maybe the fancy racing cables were a bit pricey) For a 16 year old car it is amazingly reliable, super well made and brilliantly engineered. Of course it also drives and handles like a perfectly balanced piece of German art. If people think these small issues make the car sound bad, you may have never owned an older car before, these problems are nothing :)
Considering you’re talking about a car that’s 15 years old potentiality those issues don’t seem horrible. Plus most people don’t keep their cars that long so I imagine all the expense to fix them will be with different owners so no biggie. Seems like a good option for someone’s first Porsche.😃 Very detailed as always. Thanks
Yes it seems like a good call for someone's first Porsche to be a money pit don't never get to enjoy it they will hate Porsche forever once they buy one and it needs all that work. They will be putting more money in it than what it's worth the pointless car after 10 years just fucking donated
And get best by a Toyota Camry at a red light. These cars are way under powered in today’s car world. 2.7 should be fully dismissed unless you’re not a car guy and you just want to say you drive a old Porsche
@@DD-hj3sj I think you're missing the point of the Cayman - none of the models in the range are particularly fast. If you want acceleration buy a Tesla.
@@Pcarwhisperer I agree. I'm currently buying a Cayman S which is my dream car. This video definitely convinced me to move on... and will help me for the final inspection I will make with the seller. Thank U dude.
I own a 2.7 a love it. Plenty of power. Get a re map and a new exhaust if you want more power. Still better than risking the scoring issues with an S IMO. If you want an S, get a bore scope first.
One of the most beautiful, classic Porsche designs. My 2008 987 Cayman is the best, most reliable car I ever owned. It's so simple - base model - Artic Silver over black. and runs like a champ. Always as much to drive as when it was new - over 15 years back.
Fantastic video! I'm looking to get my first Porsche and it will be a Cayman. This vid and reading through the comments has settled my nerves, and addressed my concerns! Looks like I'll gi with the base model with either the .1 or .2. Thanks again!
Good video! I have a 987.2 Added grille guards to protect radiator (DIY - gutter guard at Home Depot). Fun taking off bumper! Replaced front hood struts, drive door switch, shift cables broke - now have Numeric! Video covers a good range of items! Liked it!
Grill guards really help, I bought the zunsport for the side vents and my fronts from radiator grill store. If anyone wants brand new in the box pair side vent guards from radiator grill store let me know
@@Bangah674 it was fun I had the whole bumper in my living room. Used cardboard to cut out the area needed and the used wire cutters to the outline on the gutter guard. Used black zip ties and done! 😁 found another RUclips that did this!
This guy got a lot of stuff right. What he got wrong was the fact that the base 2.7 model has far fewer issues than the S model. The 5 speed manual transmission is much more reliable and there’s far less chance of bore scoring. Oh and the 2.7 sings a very lovely song with its engine note… and of course if you daily this thing you get to rev it out a lot more often than you do with the bigger one.
I agree with you. I have the base Cayman in yellow with sports package and it is not under powered. It is quite fast with a nice exhaust note. Also he is wrong about the S having bigger brake calipers...both have same size calipers
The base car definitely isn’t underpowered. In many cases it’s actually more fun because you can wring it out moreso than the S, especially on public roads.
👍🏼 I should have put an asterisks next to underpowered... power is all relative.. it depends what you are used too! After driving a GT3RS or 911 Turbo my "S" feels underpowered... all comes down to preference and experiences 👍🏼
@@Pcarwhisperer haha yea I figured that’s what you meant but just wanted to clarify. These cars are all great. I love that Porsche doesn’t neuter the handling of the base cars.
These are great cars . I own a 2.7 , 2008 987 . I love it ! Every car has some issues . I haven’t had any issues with mine . I do the maintenance on a regular basis . I can do it myself but I do have an Indy shop do most of it just because I like when they check the whole car over every time and give it a clean bill of health :)
Awesome! Manual or automatic! Glad to hear you haven't had much in terms of issues! Goes to show you if you take care of the car it will definitely take care of you in return! When I got the car I planned on putting about $2500 into it for transmission flush , brake fluid flush , serpentine belt , replaced AOS based off when I read and the miles on it , oil change plus the interior drivers door pull was not working correctly. Before I bought it I never could understand why people would pay what they do for a Porsche . Now I see . So much I went out and bought a Cayenne the year after and I’m hooked lol
Perfect video. Everything said is accurate. Every single word. Wish I still had mine. You see one in decent mechanical condition; don't think, just pull the trigger.
Had a 2006 Cayman S and became frustrated by the interior failings that Porsche refused to cover. In the interiors that are camel colored, the color was applied via a soft touch technique. Within 3 years the paint easily peeled off. The only fix was to remove all interior pieces and have them repainted. Porsche acknowledged the problem but refused to warranty. Mechanically the car was terrific.
Currently in the market for a 987, this overview of things to watch for it invaluable. Will definitely be making a list of what you said and getting a PPI for the car I'm eyeing.
Hi Mason one more issue that may crop up , it did with my S . The cross over coolant pipes at the front tend to rust and leak , i also had as well as the gear change cables , the numeric shifter box….. great fun. Great video for someone in the market for a 987.

Mason, spark plug tubes were phased out with the 5-chain M96 engines. They were replace on the M97 3-chain engines with green rubber o-rings. The o-rings seal between lifter carrier and camshaft cover.
I sold my 996 Carrera 4 cabrio even after an IMS solution because the fear of engine failure made me uneasy. But here I am watching Cayman videos . Definitely hard to replace the Porsche driving experience with something else but the potential engine issues can’t be taken lightly.
My understanding is that the 996 IMS is much more likely to pop if the car is not driven regularly. When they sit and all the fluids settle out, that’s when they’re in extra danger of going.
My 2006 manual (allmost a 150k MIles on the odometer) is in the shop right now - again... But I don't care! It's simply too much fun and worth every Penny! If you want to have real fun. If you want to drive a performance car that puts an everlasting smile on your face, you must not care about the costs of keeping it on the road and/or in roadworthy condition. It will cost you - dearly. But whenever you fire up that flat six and you take her out on a winding road, you'll know that it was worth it. I've had 60+ cars in the past. I've been owning/drivoing more than half a dozen Porsches in the past. The 987 Cayman S is a true keeper. It's expensive, but it's as much fun as a Ferrari 360 for a fraction of the cost.
@@yassini2567 It depends on the market situation in your area. In my area and with the extensive service and reapir records I have, the car would be priced in the low 30'ies if I was planning to sell it.
@@hughmcgurk9157 I never drove a ferrari 430. But the ferrari comes with an additional 185hp and two more cylinders, which certainly does make a difference. However, for the price of a 430 you could get a Cayman and a 911 (996, maybe 997), just to be on the save side. ;)
Seriously thinking about getting one of these very soon. Never owned a Porsche and I'm no speed demon, so I think I'll opt for a base model starting out
That's intelligent thinking and you will not have the bore scoring issues that the S models can have. IMS bearing is a paranoia that carries over from the 90s Porsches. I owned a 2007 Cayman Base and drove it for 3 years. It had a "repaired" headliner and the door handle issue he mentioned. When I got it, it had 64k, and I paid $18.5k. I used it as a daily driver. Air/Oil separator did go out, and changed the brake pads during my ownership. Less than 2k in maintenance costs. For a Porsche, this is normal, and even perhaps below average. I sold it for $17k with 86k, and now a vehicle in this condition would command north of $24k. It was a dream come true, and I still wish I had it. difference in power is negligible. The S models top speed is 174 mph vs Base model top out 162 mph. The Base model weighs a little less, so it may actually handle a bit better. I never felt underpowered, and it was a pure joy.
My low-milage 987 Cayman S was always in the shop with minor engine trouble. Needed a new flywheel at one point. Finally needed a new engine and I sold it for $8k. Lovely to drive when it was running right, but that was not often.
Based on direct experience from companies like LN Engineering, Flat 6 Innovations, and Hartech, the failure rate with the M97 or 6305 IMS bearing on 987 cars is more like
I agree. A lot of misconceptions about this issue and some people making a lot of money off this supposed issues with IMS on the Cayman. It is however an issue with the 986 Boxsters and 997`s in some cases. The big possible issue with the 987 S Gen 1 is bore scoring, usually on Cylinder 6. I currently own a 2006 S model going on 3 years with 75k miles and have had zero issues to date.
🙃 Some of these issues can be quite scary just make sure you find one with ample service history that has been well taken care of and it should have less issues! I have had mine for 6 years and have minimal issues over ownership 👍🏼
Ditto. I was about to go test drive one and possibly purchasing. Now I. Reconsidering. $500 oil change $1800 spark plugs. Water pump that fail after 30k. Maybe I shouldn't.
The best way to evaluate the health of a AOS is by using a manometer to test crankcase vacuum level. Going by the puff of smoke or other method is not conclusive. For example, a puff of smoke could be a byproduct of cold start enrichment.
Thanks for the input! Although this is the best way most people are not technicians that have a manometer to test vacuum. I am speaking to people interested in a 987 or have one and notice a puff smoke giving them an idea of what I might be. But of course will need to have it diagnosed 👍🏼
@@Pcarwhisperer Any blue smoke can spell trouble, though it can be a slow burner problem. And then it becomes a big issue when you have to get your emissions tested every year.

great video and nice car. I cant believe you have been making videos for over a year now. Do you use a battery tender when not driving the car? I am trying to figure out a better way to hook up my tender then having to pull the plastic piece off the battery, in the frunk, and hook up tender. It is a PITA to pop the plastic on and off all the time
Thanks Brad! I know crazy right! Time flies! Yes I do have a battery tender on my car and it is similar to what you have where it is connected to the battery but has an easy disconnect where I can leave the terminals plugged in just undo the cable! Something like this www.amazon.com/Battery-Tender-021-0123-Junior-Charger/dp/B01L0HTX72?ref_=ast_sto_dp&th=1
I use a trickle charger plugged into the cigarette lighter and just have the wire run out under the door with no issue . I’ve used it that way for years .
I've seen a few people saying the M97 WILL fail but they either have no source for where they got this information, or it came from an engine rebuilder who has a vested interest in getting customers. Meanwhile I've seen listings of them with 150-300,000 miles, even with the 3.4L still on an original engine so I'm starting to think I should take it with a grain of salt? Seeing them start to go for close to double what I payed a year ago.. it's somewhat tempting to sell, except I only want a 987.2 S or 981GTS with full leather which is extremely out of budget.

i've seen sparkplug tubes to be had for about 42 bucks (delivered) for the whole car. yet i see a $1800 associated with replacement @05:30 . curious... they are no more difficult to replace than sparkplugs. even i did that on my cayman (at 70 years old) in a few hours.
I am giving people the worse case scenario when taking to a Porsche dealer that is $200/hr + that $1800 comes up quickly! If you can do it yourself even better 👍🏼
It's called the Porsche tax. I deal with high end luxury dealerships every day. You have no idea how much they rip people off. Book time for a repair is based on how long it takes to complete the repair. For some reason Porsche dealership's labor rate is twice as high as a regular mechanical labor rate.
Great video! Glad it popped up. I’m actually interested in a Porsche Cayman or Cayman S! Wondering the best place to find one for sale. I’m in Northern California (Bay Area).
As someone very new to Porsche, I'm looking to buy my second car ever, and the 987 caught my attention. Would it be a gigantic leap of faith as a university student to buy such a car? It would be my only car, and I would drive it 3-4 times a week. I have some alternatives, but this seems like the most fun and soulful option. Plus if someone asks me what car I drive and I just answer "Porsche", I'd feel kinda cool, not gonna lie xD
Great question.... So glad to hear you are interested in Porsche! I would be sure to make sure you get a PPI before purchasing the car to make sure it is sound and repairs will come up from time to time and can be costly. Getting a sound car from the beginning will certainly help. It certainly is a great option... just make sure to do regular maintenance, PPI and a car with good records and you should be good! I don't blame you... there is certainly a pride in saying you own a Porsche 👍🏼
Yes, I think it would be a huge leap. To be clear, I am a few years out of university now and hit $200k last year and I can’t reasonably afford one. Don’t make a huge mistake.

I'm actually selling it and looking at a Boxster (986) with the Tip. (I know, big change, but I'm getting older and my wife wants to drive it as well. Plus a 505hp car is pretty much useless in the city where I live) Wondering how it drives. And I know, people with crucify you online for driving anything less manly than a manual. (Although I suspect most of them don't even own a car to be honest).
that was very interesting and helpful, thank you. it seems like you pretty much just have to get things fixed when they wear out it's not like you can check for these sorts of issues very easily. I'd say the highlight is the symptoms of a scored cylinder wall. but the ticking sound could also be caused by a bad pulley or belt.
@@Pcarwhisperer it's an auto ive been monitoring it and it just came into my budget and looking at it tomorrow service and everything looks to be perfect Every 2 years as prescribed No accidents And we'll kept
You’re a bit confused, these cars don’t have spark plug tubes, and that’s a non issue for a 987, that’s for the 986. There is an updated ignition coils, so these need to be updated with the spark plugs. The RMS is a maintenance item, if done when the clutch is changed, it should last that long. The IMS bearing is a non issue, change the oil in a regular basis, and it last as long as the engine cylinders that will eventually develop bore score .. you can delay it, but you can never stop it. Never do a PPI at a dealer, it’s a waste of money, do it at an Indy, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is SCOPING the cylinders for bore score, bore score start low in the cylinder, you can’t see it from the spark plug hole, scoping need to be done from the sump The loose handle has nothing to do with the cable as you said, it’s the return spring in the handle that breaks or go loose and an easy fix. Lastly never buy a tiptronic .. it’s a very boring transmission

Very true! For a lot of these issues as long you maintenance the car regularly and keep up on any issues that arise you will be all good! Thank you 😊
and none of those issues cost nearly as much as mentioned if you have 2 hands and some tools.
Yes it seems like a good call for someone's first Porsche to be a money pit don't never get to enjoy it they will hate Porsche forever once they buy one and it needs all that work.
They will be putting more money in it than what it's worth the pointless car after 10 years just fucking donated
I would not dismiss the 2.7 - it's a more reliable engine than the S and has a decent amount of power.
Very true thanks for your input 👍🏼
I agree I own a 2008 987 2.7 and it’s plenty of power and just a real nice ride . I have no interest in tracking anything .

Amazing! That’s awesome to hear! Thanks for sharing. Right there with you you the 987 is incredible!
Fantastic video! I'm looking to get my first Porsche and it will be a Cayman. This vid and reading through the comments has settled my nerves, and addressed my concerns! Looks like I'll gi with the base model with either the .1 or .2. Thanks again!
Good video! I have a 987.2
Added grille guards to protect radiator (DIY - gutter guard at Home Depot). Fun taking off bumper!
Replaced front hood struts, drive door switch, shift cables broke - now have Numeric! Video covers a good range of items! Liked it!

@@ThatCaymanGuy I do.

As a base 986 owner coming from a miata, I confirm that.
More fun to drive a slow car fast than to drive a really fast car slow.
@@Pcarwhisperer it’s a Automatic for 3 reasons lol. 1) I drove a standard for years and am tired of shifting lol 2) I didn’t want the expense of having to put new clutches in and lastly my wife doesn’t drive standard and I wanted her to be able to use the car too .

Great video, I’m saving for my first Porsche and would love to do the small maintenance jobs.
Thanks for your input Dennis! Yes definitely an issue with these cars with the interior bits 👍🏼

Awesome love it!! 😊
I sold my 996 Carrera 4 cabrio even after an IMS solution because the fear of engine failure made me uneasy. But here I am watching Cayman videos . Definitely hard to replace the Porsche driving experience with something else but the potential engine issues can’t be taken lightly.
😊 Right with you there! Can be a a little nerve racking... but just as you say the driving experience is the ultimate!
How much is it worth 150k miles in your opinion?
Have the same car in cobalt blue here in Ireland. Absolutely fabulous to drive. My friend has a ferrari 430 which can't match it!

Love it 😊
Seriously thinking about getting one of these very soon.
A BEAUTIFUL VEHICLE. Love the color. GREAT LINES . Love it .

My low-milage 987 Cayman S was always in the shop with minor engine trouble. Needed a new flywheel at one point. Finally needed a new engine and I sold it for $8k. Lovely to drive when it was running right, but that was not often.
Based on direct experience from companies like LN Engineering, Flat 6 Innovations, and Hartech, the failure rate with the M97 or 6305 IMS bearing on 987 cars is more like
Great thank you 👍🏼

But of course will need to have it diagnosed 👍🏼

great video and nice car. I cant believe you have been making videos for over a year now. Do you use a battery tender when not driving the car? I am trying to figure out a better way to hook up my tender then having to pull the plastic piece off the battery, in the frunk, and hook up tender. It is a PITA to pop the plastic on and off all the time

How many of these issues were corrected with the 987.2?
Please give me your impressions on the Tiptronic. I currently drive an '06 Corvette Z06 manual and while it is great on an open road, during any city driving or commutes, it's completely tiresome.

Does bore scoring affect the base Cayman model??
No. Its an issue with the earlier 3.4 engines.
Never do a PPI at a dealer, it’s a waste of money, do it at an Indy, the MOST IMPORTANT thing is SCOPING the cylinders for bore score, bore score start low in the cylinder, you can’t see it from the spark plug hole, scoping need to be done from the sump
The loose handle has nothing to do with the cable as you said, it’s the return spring in the handle that breaks or go loose and an easy fix.
Lastly never buy a tiptronic .. it’s a very boring transmission
Anyone have input for me i currently have an s2000 and thinking of trading it for a 987.1 or 2 what are the similarities and differences iv done lots of research and is still a hard decision i do plan on tracking the car maybe 1 or twice a year.
Keep the S2000, very sought after car and going up in value. Cayman s, not so much. I get it, I love the looks of the cayman and thought of selling my mint MR2 Spyder. In the end the maintenance cost of the cayman scared me away.

Owned a 2006 CaymanS and had a turbo installed by TPC racing in 2009. Very reliable and boosted HP to 495. Made other performance mods but the turbo made it a blast to drive. Out performed many of the 911s I ran against. Even converted a couple of 911 owners because of the superior handling characteristics.
Haters gonna hate. TipTronic is a beast of a auto transmission. If it wasn't, Porsche wouldn't have put it in the Turbo 911 before PDK.
Since Porsche makes more money per vehicle than any other make...what if they copied Toyota to make more durable and reliable components, i.e., 45k mile $2000 waterpump is not an example of good design. I have a 250k mile toyota with no leaks and only brake pad replacements needed. That is real performance.
Because that’s not how engineering works. Why do you think every performance car has more common issues than your Toyota…
