Mark did a great job in capturing the soul of this car and the emotional connection. I own a '13 981S which is worth half the price but a very similar ownership experience. It's a modern day 355 Spider. Believe me, I had one.
Hi other Jack, I got a 718gts4.0 cayman in chalk. Thanks for making detailed videos on this car. it was helpful when narrowing down what to buy. Coming from a '17 M2, the gts 4.0 is one hell of an upgrade.
981 Spyder owner. Said when I ordered it, I'd keep it for 50 years. 63 months later, no change in plans. 718 4.0 GTSes and 718 GT4/Spyder are also in that camp. Folks, if you get one, don't "upgrade" to something else. Just keep it forever. They're impossible to beat for the price.
I am the original owner of a 99 Boxster. Still drive it and giving it to my son. It’s fantastic. Now, I have a Spyder coming in December. Will NEVER sell it. Last of the true great sports cars ever made.

Having driven this car for that past 6 months, I think that the long gearing claim is not a real issue for the average driver. The sound and power delivery is so amazing starting 4k rpm that you don't need to rev the car beyond 6k rpm. Driving this car is extremely satisfying.

You guys hit all the points I needed. You have done reviews on all the cars that I wanted(M2, New Supra, 4.0 cayman) still waiting on the TTRS review. Main reason I live in Alberta Canada
As someone who has owned 4 Porsches in the last 7 or 8 years, one thing I cannot stand is the community that surrounds them. This car is perfect in every sense. However, the Porsche community would have you believe that the 911 is superior. Dollar for dollar, the 718 GTS shits all over the 911. I decided to stop spending my money on cars this year otherwise, I'd still own this car. 2020 MY
The 718 gts essentially a 911 perfected with mid engine lay out better drivetrain with a sweeter manual and bored out NA flat six that should actually be worth more than the 911s. Who am I to complain if they’re going to sell it for less.
I have had both a 981.1 Cayman S and a 991.2, and the 911 is every bit as special as a Cayman, imo. The 3.0 Turbo motors are outstanding. A base 911 is not that different in price to a Cayman GTS, especially in the used market for a low mileage car. They are both excellent cars, run on the same assembly line, and they are much more similar than they are different. I couldn't care less what other people think.
@@drbobs8267 "I traded in my 38,000 MSRP car for a car that is at minimum almost twice that and is better" Wow who would've thought that a Porsche that's double the cost of an S2K at minimum would be worse.
Base 981 is real fun, but the sad thing are the very long gears. This takes a lot fun out of it. I drove 981 boxster(pdk) and 2.0 supra(fully specd) back to back and the supra is a bit more fun just for the more shifting to do on narrow mountain roads. On the Boxster there are corners, where the gears just dont fit and you are falling to low in RPM.
savahegeese are among the best car reviews program in USA IMHO....thanks for the review and i sincerely beleive that the 718 GTS and GT4 are ones of the best sport car ever
I've said it ever since I first drove a 718 Boxster S on the launch event on the Porsche Leipzig circuit: The 718 is the point where the Boxster and Cayman finally overtake the 911, especially now that it has the 9A2 flat six. The 718 is now the better 911 - it's the hardcore "everyday" Porsche.
Awesome video. Answers all the right questions for Boxter drivers - which I am. Am so looking forward to my next Boxster purchase. Love Porsche. Gives me everything I need; prestige, practicality, drivers' experience, fun, peace, and a personal reward.
Be careful what you wish for. For years people have asked for Boxster/Cayman trims that approach (or exceed) 911 capability. Now that they are here, is it a surprise the prices also approach 911 levels? If you don't want to spend ~100k, buy a base Cayman, it is a wonderful car. Still too high? The return of the flat 6 engines is bound to depress prices of 2014-2016 981 series cars, and a 3.4 liter Cayman S is a 99% ideal sports car.
The upcoming 400z will certainly be a good sports car, but with a front engine and turbo v6 it is unclear if it will have the handling balance and quick throttle response of the Porsches. The Cayman has a precision and telepathic control that is almost unique among modern cars, let's hope the 400z gets similar abilities.
Jack, u killing it man. I am closer aligned to your car takes vs Mark's. You are a lot more hooliganish and fun oriented w your car choices, Mark is technical precision and serious .
This video caused me to purchase this car. I went to the PSDS a few years ago (I made my one and only RUclips video about it) and fell in love with the flat 6 sound. I ended up purchasing a Miata after that, partly because the boxster was a "4 popper" at that time, partly because I wanted to start simple, but I didn't really fit in it (I'm 6'4"). I decided to sell it after 3 seasons, with the intent of not having a sports car. This video changed my mind. Put in a $5k deposit on the dealer's next allocation this morning. Thanks for the great reviews.
After that Nissan Rogue, Jack and Mark definitely needed some "Deutsche Medizin" - it had to be Porsche! Just look at their faces - they're alive again! Miracle!
Love to see a review of the original 981 boxster/cayman, that might be a real deal. I'm really curious to see the potential weight difference in the new platform.
I just rented an 2014 Boxter S from Turo. My son & I have rented several fun performance cars through Turo. The idea in the beginning was to teach him to drive a manual. So, we drove a WRX, a Polaris Slingshot, a Miata RF, a 370z, and a Corvette Z51. The Corvette was hands down the best car, but more crazy fast and a bit scary. The Boxter S was hands down the best performer of any. Handling, control, acceleration with foot down to the floor, comfort, and convertible to boot. I’ve never had the pleasure and now see the light. If I had the $$ I’d buy one. My son got a 2020 Hyundai Veloster N. He wanted a hot hatch. I’ve driven it to extremes over the same roads, and it has incredible handling and punch for a fwd 275hp turbo. More fun than anything, except the Vette and the Boxter. Keep in mind The Veloster was designed by Albert Biermann, who designed the M series line at BMW. I’ll drive a Porsche again believe me!!! 🙏🙏🙏
Love my Cayman version, just a stunning wonderful thing to drive. I did 400 miles in a day last week and it’s as comfortable and useable driving long haul with my 92 year old mum as a passenger as it is sharp and alive down a winding country road. Perfect in every way.
The 6 cylinder mid-engine Porsche is a hero car for me. I can't afford one now, but when I can, it's the kind of car that I'll keep and cherish until it stops functioning (or I stop functioning) in 30+ years. It's one of those rare vehicles that is engineering excellence, and the kind of product that you want to buy new to show Porsche that there are people that care about these products.
Nice review. I agree with everything you said except the complaints about the gearing, which is perfect the way it is for the roads I drive every day. Very drivable around town without the need to rev it to 8k every start (I have the GT4) but also a joy to run through the gears to a high speed when appropriate. The longer gears also minimize the frequency of shifting to get to a high speed, which makes for a smoother, quicker run to a high speed. The gearing is also great for the track and through twistie canyon roads. My advice, if you're not going to drive this car fast in a way that makes the gearing a joy to behold, buy something else. I look forward to your GT4 and GT3 reviews. Thanks for your great work!
One of the best reviews I've seen for this car! Really well approached and I think it steps on the toes of far more expensive sports / supercars out there 👍
i had driven a cayman in the suburbs and for a few miles on a freeway once and didin't think it had much to offer over and above any other sports car i'd ever driven, but when i first drove one at (ahem) speed on a winding country road, it was a revelation.
I didn't drive GTS 4.0 yet, but I suspect its long 2nd-gear may not really be a problem. You can always short-shift, and as a result use 3 or 4 gears, even in city driving. I do it all the time in my turbo Bimmer. Sure, the car will be a little sluggish because it lacks flat torque curve of a turbo, but to rectify this you can downshift in a lightning-quick fashion, courtesy of automatic rev-matching. In fact I believe that auto rev-matching is more useful in this car than in turbo ones, because it complements its high-revying, linear-torque, engine better.
Instead of designing a new gearbox, Porsche could have just used a different final drive ratio instead - a lot of aftermarket companies already offer this. The real reason they gave it such long gearing is fuel economy 😢
the gearing is just stupid. reminds me of that recent straight pipes video where he just stayed in second gear for minutes while drastically changing speeds. wtf is this bullshit? game breaker for me
I think the 718 4.0L gearing is like that because Porsche didn't want the 718 to be faster than a 911 C2S.... You know the 911 crowd, they can't take the baby Porsches being faster than their Carrera Ss.
Besides the weird sound, the problem with the old GTS was the combination of turbo lag and long gearing. Kudos to Porsche for listening to the press and customers. Great video!!
Claims of turbo lag are way overplayed especially in sport plus / if you’re worried about turbo lag you may sooner concern yourself with less torque on 4L
I think Porsche even as a mainstream brand knows how to sell cars but they care about their fans and enthusiasts There’s a reason why Porsche is the best sports car
Hi guys, thank you for a great review. How does the Porsche GT4 flat 6 compare to the Lexus LC 500 V8 in terms of driving dynamics and comfort? I already know that Lexus loses regarding the infotainment setup. Anxious to get your feedback. Thanks once again and best regards...
Re the Evora: I drive mine every day and in the UK weather/roads, too. It really can be done easily. Agree with your "spectrum" analysis around16:00-18:00 broadly, but the Evora is not really "highly" compromised at least no more than the 718 GTS is affordable :-)
As always, a great review, and I couldn't expect less from the "geese". It surprises me a bit that people vote these videos down. I know, to each his/her own.
Previously 987 Boxster, 2.7L 5MT. Currently 718 Cayman T, 2.0L 6MT. There's no comparison. Although the four sounds OK at full throttle above 4000 it'll never compete with the 6 in that respect. But the 4, in sport mode (of course) is a much happier engine. Throttle response even at low rpm is immediate. The turbo power build is not an issue. The old car was dead below 3500, this one lively even with small inputs. The car itself is so far ahead of the 987 it is what I focus on and the engine sound is what it is. The 6cyl models are not in my budget anyway.
@@jackholmes8105 Overall it is all I wanted. I prefer a car with enough power to be fun, I'm not competing with anyone. I am enjoying the fact that these cars are so controversial. I owned a 914 back in the 70's and it was also viewed as suspect until it went out of production, then it was suddenly wonderful. I plan to keep this one for at least as long as it's predecessor so I am curious to see how it does in that regard. Everything from daily driving to road trips is on the agenda and I think it's the perfect car, more what the 911 was back when I had the 914.

to see Mark having issues with the GT4 from last gen but happy to hear he really liked this one.
Greetings from Scotland. Love these in-depth reviews giving information no-one else provides.

I just bought a 16 981 Cayman GTS...had it a month put 1500 miles on it...absolutely love the car and it's with PDK...freaking awesome !
I purchased a 2021 718 Cayman GTS 4.0 the day after Thanksgiving. 1 owner 7,500 miles. I am blown away at how this drives. This is a 2nd car just for the twisties in North Georgia Mountains. I giggle every time I drive it. Mine is a 6 speed manual. A necessity IMO.

Boxster GTS 4.0 is the best Porsche of all time
since 2014 i have a 911turbo for the Sundays and planed to buy a VW Golf R for everyday, but then i stepped in to a 987 boxster S and bought it plus a very old van for big transports. U can guess, which was my favorite everyday car: the 987!
now, 10yrs and 90000 km later i will keep the 911, keep the van and replace the boxster..and it will be a boxster again! i lurked for an affordable 718 S, but now i think, i dig for some gold in my garden untill i can find a GTS 4.0...this video was the answer to my question
This is my first time seeing your channel. And let me say, the production is excellent. The shots in the beginning, and the in depth sub-features are great.
Man, the quality of the video, and im specifically talking about video/record/resolution, and camera moves, its something that makes me watch all this channel releases with much joy.
Mark did a great job in capturing the soul of this car and the emotional connection. I own a '13 981S which is worth half the price but a very similar ownership experience. It's a modern day 355 Spider. Believe me, I had one.
Porsche styling is so good I swear
So simple, so clean.
Lol! Not
Do you really think so? Some 911s are nice maybe, but this car looks like it came out of a 3D printer.
Hi other Jack, I got a 718gts4.0 cayman in chalk. Thanks for making detailed videos on this car. it was helpful when narrowing down what to buy. Coming from a '17 M2, the gts 4.0 is one hell of an upgrade.
Also somehow I paid msrp in mid 2021, time to buy a lottery ticket.
I tell people the same thing if they can find a really clean W204 C63 that 6.2L motor and sound will never be manufactured again!
I am the original owner of a 99 Boxster. Still drive it and giving it to my son. It’s fantastic. Now, I have a Spyder coming in December. Will NEVER sell it. Last of the true great sports cars ever made.
I’ve only watched 10 seconds and it’s already more entertaining than the Rogue review.
I watched this again… now that I own one. Not disappointed.

I absolutely love this car, I have always been a fan of the Cayman line-up but it's INSANE how expensive these have become...
Exactly. I just purchased one and sheeeesh! 😆 If you're looking for the driving experience, leave out navigation and shit that you use your phone for.
Having driven this car for that past 6 months, I think that the long gearing claim is not a real issue for the average driver. The sound and power delivery is so amazing starting 4k rpm that you don't need to rev the car beyond 6k rpm. Driving this car is extremely satisfying.
Porsche makes everything optional - at least they deliver it to you in primer.
Hahaha I’ve been noticing more and more “primer” vehicles on the road. Where’s your sense of adventure, people, especially with a sports car?!

Shape of Mark’s head matches the shape of the side windows with industry-leading precision. Thank you for sharing this amazing car with us. I personally like the 991-era interior in this car more than the 992. The center tach is larger and more analog.

The 911 is a bad design that Porsche has masterfully forced to work through genius engineering. Mid-engine makes so much more sense, and it's cheaper.
ruclips.net/video/gmS__G9ig64/видео.html
If you look carefully, the Carrera is slowing inching-or millimetering-it’s way to mid engine. Check out the rear of a 992 and you’ll see what I mean.

GT4 RS is their best track car now followed by 911 GT3
@@GuitarsAndSynths The GT3 is still faster, with arguably a better front suspension. The rear engine helps with traction as well.
“The fun factor” and the need to go too fast is the exact reason why I lust after a BASE 981 boxster which is like a German Honda s2k
You are right. I traded in my S2K on this car because it’s better. I loved the S2K. It was the most fun car I ever had but the 718 is more fun!

I've said it ever since I first drove a 718 Boxster S on the launch event on the Porsche Leipzig circuit:
The 718 is the point where the Boxster and Cayman finally overtake the 911, especially now that it has the 9A2 flat six. The 718 is now the better 911 - it's the hardcore "everyday" Porsche.
I am looking forward to this one, thanks as usual lads
Awesome video. Answers all the right questions for Boxter drivers - which I am. Am so looking forward to my next Boxster purchase. Love Porsche. Gives me everything I need; prestige, practicality, drivers' experience, fun, peace, and a personal reward.

You will need to sell more than kidneys, probably half of your liver, one testicle and eyeball as well.
@@bartonpayne1017 I'd stick to the new 400z that's coming out because it will be half the price but still have a 6 cylinder engine.

Miracle!

You 2 guys make this channel ROCK! Thanks. Always enjoy watching this channel.
Or until they outlaw ICEs. ;)
Thanks for your great work!

i had driven a cayman in the suburbs and for a few miles on a freeway once and didin't think it had much to offer over and above any other sports car i'd ever driven, but when i first drove one at (ahem) speed on a winding country road, it was a revelation.
Sounds better in the car. Not sure how to explain but it hits you in all the right places
This is the only Porsche I would own, if I could afford it, in a hardtop.
I’m glad they kept the practicality of the interior
Instead of designing a new gearbox, Porsche could have just used a different final drive ratio instead - a lot of aftermarket companies already offer this. The real reason they gave it such long gearing is fuel economy 😢
It's more efficient on the track as well, but sometimes it's not about efficiency.
exactly right!
the gearing is just stupid. reminds me of that recent straight pipes video where he just stayed in second gear for minutes while drastically changing speeds. wtf is this bullshit? game breaker for me
I think the 718 4.0L gearing is like that because Porsche didn't want the 718 to be faster than a 911 C2S.... You know the 911 crowd, they can't take the baby Porsches being faster than their Carrera Ss.

"Much missed flat six" Whew, when that mixtape coming out?
Besides the weird sound, the problem with the old GTS was the combination of turbo lag and long gearing. Kudos to Porsche for listening to the press and customers. Great video!!
Claims of turbo lag are way overplayed especially in sport plus / if you’re worried about turbo lag you may sooner concern yourself with less torque on 4L
I think Porsche even as a mainstream brand knows how to sell cars but they care about their fans and enthusiasts

How do you like your cayman t overall? The Carrera T we drove a while back was pure magic.
