The guy with a lizard green Macan thinks he's too old for a Boxster....lol
It's mamba actually
It’s not lizard green it’s metallic pee
I think a Macan is really an old people car. At least for a porsche
SUVs are for old people
Just received my '21 GTS. I still can't believe it's mine.
Congratulations!
I love my simple bullet proof 6 speed Corolla L.
I'm wondering how long the wait was after you signed an agreement w/dealership, how many months' wait 'til build was confirmed, and total time from signing to delivery. The 'pandemic' has slowed manufacturing lines(?) Haven't heard a peep on that subject.
@@johncartwright5179 Ordered mine in April. Still waiting. No idea when the confirmation will be. Summer, fall, winter, spring? It would be nice to know.
@@bills8109 Your sales person or sales manager MAY have info by now. Different dealers may have to wait longer to get an 'allocation' in order to assure your build is accepted. My intention to do a build was made known to my dealer mid-January; I found mid-July that my expected delivery date at dealer is Oct 1. Yes, it can take a while. Best wishes!
I own a 718 Spyder. The GTS has a “similar” engine with the 4.0 flat 6 but the chassis is way different in the Spyder. The 718 Spyder has the same suspension as the GT4 (front end from the GT3 and rear that is unique to the GT4/Spyder). That is what makes that car so special. Top down driving in a race car like chassis can’t be beat. I traded my 911 in for it and don’t regret it one bit. The roof doesn’t bother me as I never put it up (southern living FTW).
Nick, if you don't love a 4.0 Boxster, you're not too old; you're dead.
I’m older than dirt, 73, and got my 981 Spyder as my 70th BDay present to myself.
that spyder is just too sexy compared to the gts
Agreed. The spyder looks fantastic.
A Spyder with an electronic roof - now that would be something! Loving your work, Nick - great review
Agree on the shape preference for the 911, but I think the Spyder is the exception to that with the old Speedster bubble back combined with that duck bill. I can see the heritage/shape there for sure 👍🏼
The chassis is also way different than the GTS. Dampers, brakes, etc all different
Impressive cars. I'm equally impressed by your hair gel keeping that banker in a hurry vibe intact !😎
Banker or wanker? 😂
Remembering your recent comment about your father…I hope things are as well as they can be in whatever way they are now. Such things are no fun and I empathize.
I'm jealous Nicky! These two look like such a treat. Glad you're back in the states
Hi ted
Nick driving Porsche.
That's what has been missing on yt recently!
Yes! I had not seen one of his videos in a while
Geez, was that not one, but THREE Boxsters you stained with the smell of old people?
Hey kid, kindly STFU and respect your elders. Sheesh, kids these daze...

Great spec on that Spyder 😍I’ll take Spyder all day over GTS 4.0..... it’s still very civilized in my opinion and has a sharper edge as well as much better styling.
The front end styling of Spider/GT4 compared to bland front end of GTS puts it over the top for me.
You can pay $3-4k to get a sport design front end on the GTS so it gets rid of the Panamera look.
@@glennhavinoviski8128 This is my problem with Porsche. Something that costs a couple hundred on Audi costs thousands on a Porsche. Why? Well because you can and everything on Porsche is overpriced.
@@glennhavinoviski8128 Don’t see that sport design package available on GTS.
That Spyder looks breathtaking. The GTS just doesn’t have that aggressive styling.
Spyder is special. It’s automotive art.
The spec on the blue spyder is simply gorgeous
While trying to decide on which one to get I found that the Boxter GTS has WAY more options. More interior color options, more wheel options, automatic roof, ventilated seats, keyless entry are among the important things for me. The Spyder doesn’t offer any of these. The Spyder was an easy decision for me until I found out these details.
Nick your the best sales person this dealer has 😉
That is true
I thought the roof on my 718 Spyder was okay....at first. Then I thought, yeah not great but I can live with it. Then I had to admit to myself I didn’t like it. And then after a while, I decided I fucking hated it! Then I drove the GTS 4.0 which was 98% as good to drive! I drove round putting the roof up and down, up, down, up down laughing out loud, I was so happy (I live in England). So I sold the Spyder and ordered a GTS, which then became the Boxster 25, which also has the short throw gearbox. Be here soon, can’t wait. So I guess my advice is save $20k, still looks great, drives sublime, won’t get on your nerves 😉👍
You just confirmed for me the comment I just added about why people were suddenly selling their 981 Spyders and getting the 4.0 GTS-thank you for validating my point about the damn roof!
I think the problem is mostly England lol. Your weather is so unpredictable, raining one minute and sunny the next. In most areas of North America, we don't have this problem. Put the top down in the morning, put it back up in the evening. No big deal. Spyders are selling faster than GT4s, however, the GTS 4.0 is also selling well. Can't go wrong either way IMO.
@@justatemp2000 you’re absolutely correct 👍
@@thedudeabides1443”suddenly selling their Spyders”? WTF are you talking about? I’m never selling my Spyder. BTW, asking prices for 981 Spyders have gone up 15-20%
@@justatemp2000 I totally agree with you.. I never once complain about my Spyder roof operation. No big deal… I’m not lazy
That Spyder has a perfect exterior and interior color combo.
Nick looking like a proper millionaire driving those cars.
Had my 2023 Spyder for 10 months. I prefer the engagement with the manual roof. Peak Porsche!
I’d rather have the GTS honestly. More color options, better top, and real door handles.
+ you forgot the roof. But the Spyder looks soo much better.
Yeah - but the Spyder from looks so much better - depends too if it's a one car garage or three cars?
Spyder you probably lose not that much money.
For real driving and fun GTS
For long time keeping - Spyder
@@RacingRalphEVO it does look better...but only marginally IMO.
@@bavariancarenthusiast2722 yes I think that you have a good point. If in a garage with 3 or 4 other great cars, the Spyder could be the better choice. But if only 1 or 2 car garage, the GTS is probably a better option.
@@jack99889988 Hi Jack, I disagree for myself- I owned a number of Porsches - still do, the experience to own one for myself is really good. But if you made a different bad experience, that sometimes sticks for a long time.
I wish reviews would stop making negative comments about the roof on the Spyder. If you know how to do it properly (there is a correct way) it is quick and simple. Yes it requires that you get out of the car but it’s exercise most people could use!
I have one. I love the manual roof. It’s part of the cars engagement
Nothing like driving top down in the middle of winter with a nice green scarf.
Awesome comparison. I would go with the GTS 4.0 just because of the top. You want to drive these every day and I think that Spyder top would drive me crazy.
It is amazing how perfect his hair remains after all the open top driving, awesome. Great review. CHEERS!
as always an authentic, light hearted but yet informative review. I always hoped for a 981 GT4 touring when I had my 981S and the GTS is pretty much that, but even more comfortable than a GT4
Glad to have you back in the USA, Nick. I love my 2016 Spyder. Getting rid of the 981Cayman to switch to the Spyder was the best move ever. The 981 Spyder sounds better than the 2021 Spyder but otherwise the new one is amazing
The 718 Spyder is quickly becoming one of my dream cars to buy.
That interior color on the Spyder is amazing. Haven't seen any out there with this color combination.
You know what, I can’t even hate. Nick is an old man, but he owns it.
Thanks Nick, now I'm not getting any work done today.
Great to see you doing Porsche vids again! :)
The new Spyder looks amazing in person. I saw an old 987 Spyder and I thought that car looked really good.
For the looks: Spyder
Bang for the buck: GTS 4.0
Bruh. Just swap the Spyder bumper onto the GTS 4.0 and BOOM you got yourself a Spyder with a useable convertible..
@@emptyskullify I’d take those Spyder wheels…
Nice One Nick!
I see a sneaky little Green Machine popping into the shots every now and then. Haha 👍
That spider is STUNNING!!!!🤩
I had no idea you could get that light brown color of interior/seats on the Spyder. Looks gorgeous!!!
Those are the 918 carbon fiber buckets, $6500
You can’t - this was a limited vehicle called the 000 spyder
You're looking sharp, Nick! That touch of gray suggests a late career Cary Grant. I've always enjoyed your videos, with your enthusiasm for Porsche in particular. Thanks to you I leased first a 2017 M4 (I watched all your M4 videos) and then a 2019 Cayman S -- two cars with improved turbo performance but with controversially muffled sound. I still love my Cayman S because of all its great low-down grunt. I get that the sound itsn't tuneful, but to me it still sounds pretty Porsche, especially at higher revs, having driven a lot of the other turbocharged models, from the Turbo S on down. Obviously nothing like the howl of the GT3 etc., but I'm still happy with it. Anyway, keep up the great work! Always love your informative videos :)
Welcome back home Nick. I just took delivery of my Gentien Blue Spyder in Atlanta with sofa seats and red interior. Had a 981 Spyder and couldn’t wait to get another one. Lives next to my GT3 in “hideous” Miami Blue. 😉
I watched this video a few times since you shot this. Finally was able to get my hands on a limited edition 718 Boxster 25. Love it. Thanks for the information you provided.
Thanks Nick been looking for some unbiased information on the Boxster. Cheers 👍
Any chance of a comparison between the 4.0 718 GTS and the 981 GTS?
96. The Spyder looks lovely but the GTS 4 takes my money. I can’t live with that roof
I for one would love to know the MPG #'s. Porsche has always endeavored to build efficient cars compared to their competition. Get with it, Nick!
The lack of an OPF filter for the US cars makes such a huuge difference on video 😱
4 cylinder Porsche is Great. 919 Hybrid: smallish 2.0-liter turbo V-4 delivering a largish 500 horsepower.
Well, sound or not, that 2.5 GTS looks wayyyyyy better than the other two you drove.
Back in the driving seat 💺!!! Oh 😊 yeah ! Good news for all of us Porsche lovers
As is always the case, it all depends on what you want to use it for. Those who want a weekend toy will choose the spyder while those who want to use it for more day to day mundane driving should choose the GTS.
Welcome home, Nick. We missed you!
Good review. Helps to understand differences in GTS and Spyder.
Nick, trading my 992 for a 4.0 GTS, never bonded with my 992, too large to enjoy on smaller twisty roads.
Cayman and boxster interior is perfect analog dials and physical buttons
I'm looking at a new Targa but the Spyder has caught my eye as it's an absolutely beautifully designed car. My last car was a 2012 Cayman S, so I prefer the mid-engine platform. I'm just not sure I want to deal with the manual top on the Spyder as I will be getting in and out of my car regularly in the city and don't want to leave it open.
My vote is the Spider just looks awesome and excellent that a manual option is available, somehow after listening to your excellent reviews a Thunderbirds soundtrack spring to mind.
The 718 Spyder rocks. I ordered a 2022 911 but I'm tempted to switch the order to the 718. Bad ass.
Boxster/Cayman 4 litre gts is pretty much the perfect car. I’d have it over most 992 models
They sound so much better your side of the pond Nick, think the Spyder just pips it for me but glad to see that finally,.GTS owners have a car that is worth the increase over the S! Nice video, and nice to have you back.
Welcome back Nick... Super comparison of the three!!!
Seeing you catching rays made me like this. Well done
I've got to disagree with your styling comment. The spyder I think is light years better looking that any 911.
The suspension is different in the GTS 4.0 vs spyder. Spyder has GT3 suspension and front end. GTS is boxster...
I wasn't aware the shifter was different.
I prefer GTS 4.0, because it has the full range of options.
Hello Nick, Glad to see your car reviews again! Funnily enough I took delivery of a manual GT silver 718 Spyder three weeks ago.. Do I miss the 911? ...errr no. Great video! ps. I'll need to broaden my Nick Murray T-shirt collection. All the best, stay safe!
Just love the ECON: Who cares! 😂😂😂😜
I love your videos! Your intro made me laugh!
Can’t wait to see your thoughts on the new GT3 and or maybe your walkthrough the specs ....
I was looking for EXACTLY this video. Thank you!! My dealer offered me an allocation on a GTS 4.0 with a discount and after playing with the Car Configurator... man... I'd rather go with a lesser-optioned Spyder for what works out to literally $3-4k more OR look for a CPO 2.5 GTS. But man that Spyder looks SO GOOD I might have to see if the dealer can squeak me one of those instead!
Are you located in the US?
Really liked your comparisons. I went from 911 to the Cayman and Boxster years ago. Owned two of the Spyders. 986 and 981 versions. My fav Porsches of all Porsches. You are off on a deal for the 718 GTS. No 50-60k deals that I have seen. So just go for the 4.0 people! 😊😊👍🏻
Right below this video is a video of Nick from 4 years ago about negotiating a discount and my God has Nick aged 😳😲
That blue Spyder is gorgeous!
The window on the Spyder has formally closed now. It is no longer available.
Fun fact kids, new car Connecticut dealer plates always start with X, used car dealers start with D. Nobody was wondering but oh well haha. Glad your back in the states Nick :)
My wife put her $1000 deposit on the 718 Spyder at first rumor *three* years ago! Took delivery (in CT) last December. Miami Blue with the gold wheels. Quite a looker...so’s the car. The roof is not push button but not horrible. She has it tucked away in under two minutes and it looks so cool. And the humps are so wicked looking compared to any other 718. That’s what does it for me.
Oh I was really missing Nick on Porsche cars.
Now I know why over the past year or so there were soooo many 981 Spyders for sale: people were getting rid of them and buying this 4.0 GTS for not a lot more money, better engine and, most of all, an EASY top to put up and take down. Makes sense now!
Hopefully in 10-15 years those 4 cylinders will be a bargain, could be a nice cheap track toy one day
Nick, thanks for respecting that these are new cars that someone will be spending big money to purchase. I'm not sure about the Boxster, but my Macan GTS has a 2,000 mile engine break-in period.
Everyone on RUclips talks about how they would buy a gt4 or spyder. Even if they had the money they couldn't get one from their dealer if they tried. Limited sales to regular customers
A completely unrelated question, but do you know where you got that jacket and jumper from, they are really good looking, thanks.
Someone complimenting Nick's fashion choices, that's gotta be a first.
@@dontbelievethehype777 At least he was wearing clothes this time
Love my 718 Boxster S but crave the 4.0 GTS. If I had $138k to spend through, I would not buy the Spyder or any Boxster - I'd get a Carrera S cabrio or targa.
The Grinch called....he wants his gloves back.
Great video, Nick! The GTS 4.0 in viper green would be a dream
Drive the 981 Spyder. Even more biblical sound track!
Somebody buy him some driving gloves, please. Talking about the car drives sensations and responsiveness while driving with snow gloves 😆
Good to have you back Nick.
thanks for video , went to porsche dealer yesterday , not local one 3 hours away very impressed , thinking about base 911, he told me he could not sell floor stock as has to wait for new models to turn up , came home watched this video and others about these models think i will get one of these but at73 am i making the right move ,
From every angle the Spyder is a just a touch more elegant and substantial in its styling.
Somehow pulling off the green scarf and gloves in the Spyder!
I got offered a Spyder allocation but am going Boxster GTS. Prefer the 3% tamer and convenience at a significantly better price. Doing ED when the borders reopen. I’m in a loaded 981S manual now and skipped the 2.5L range completely. They’re so effin gross!
This is a great side by side comparison, as I’m debating similar GTS 4 vs Spyder/GT3 vs 911
The Spyder definitely does look a bit better in my eyes but 140k for a 718?!?! I’d have to be going 911 Carrera S or Targa 4 at this price, albeit much different vehicles.
That thing must be specced to the nines. Ceramic brakes for 8,000, the buckets for 5,900, and probably the Burmeister for 4,600. It's still pricey but a sensible spec on this comes in under 115,000. But I see your point.
Those seats are adding a ton to the price. Bucket seats plus the tan leather as a special option is a lot of money.
911 is so boring in comparison to 4L 718, unless it’s GT3, Turbo or maybe GTS. But they are so much more expensive.
Or...just get a used 981 boxster w/flat-6 for $30-40k
Concur. Either a 2.7L or a 3.4L naturally aspirated flat-six with no major reliability issues that I am aware of. Both variants have that great howl and throttle response. And while styling is subjective, I think the 981 generation looks a tad better than the 718 generation, excluding the Spyder/GT4.
I would agree if they were actually this cheap, but 981 Boxster are 6-8 years now and still 50.000-60.000€ (Germany). Too much for such an old car. New GTS 4.0 keep their value strong, are way faster and cost 90.000€ after options and discount. Also like the looks of 982 a tad more.
The 2.5 will be a great used buy in a few years
It’s great to drive now. Bought one with no regrets. The 4.0 doesn’t sound that great and you miss the torque.
Glad you are back.
The 2.5 GTS isn’t a bad car, the 4.0 NA engine just shows it up a little, I’ll take one
Just take the GTS 4.0 in Gentian Blue (that colour really is an antidote to daily worries) and enjoy actually getting over speedbumps and staying dry in a sudden downpour.
I love it too! Who wouldn't?
I’ll bet most people would prefer the livability of the gts over the spyder over the long run. Spend a few hundred bucks for a short throw shifter kit and enjoy the better ride quality of the gts and have $20k to spend elsewhere
