This video went from a car review to a car tutorial Porsche owners will use when stuck on the side of the road putting up the top during a rainstorm 😂😂
Monday Morning quarter-back, but they absolutely 100% should have made a system where the manual cloth top was permanently attached at the back, like as in a miata, if you didn't have to pull the handles and attach the cables to tension it, the operation would be significantly easier. They could still have the 2nd part removable, that stores in the trunk, that's fine... but the basic top should have been an easier operation.
I daydreamed owning the car and if the dealership delivered it to me with the top on or off, I'm not switching it lmao. If I had enough money to own the car I'm telling valet to figure it out lmao
Imagine being at a red light when the rain comes and the ‘08 Miata next to you presses one button to close the roof. Meanwhile, you have to pull out your Lego kit to close yours lol

To be a fly on the wall in the Porsche room meeting where that convertible process actually got approved. I would literally pay money to find out how that went down. Insanity.
Yep thats insane. Im laughing watching this. Its clearly been designed after 2022. Everything gets crappier but price goes up. I swear food was better before co-vid even.
Actually, so long as you don't slow down or stop, you don't get wet in a Boxster when it rains (I have an S). Nevertheless, I can see the German high fives when they finished that roof design (as well as coffee cup holder). Very stupid design.
Doug - have you ever assembled the top in old British roadsters - When you have to assemble a frame, then attach the fabric top...sheer madness in the rain! Love this car, and wish I could have it.
To all those bashing the roof operation. This is the SPYDER. Spyders are always designed as a roof down car, with a roof being an emergency solution to not get wet when it rains. The first gen Spyder even was limited in speed with the roof up to something like 120 kph. Same thing was with Murcielago.
The fact that the company that made this top also did the Targa where its fully power operated to lift away a white board sized panel and tuck it under the largest power operated piece in the car industry, is insane.
@@MassimoPiacere Yea I know I was more making a point of the Targa cause I thought it was a manually removable panel until I saw some videos on IG like a solid 2 years after it came out and thought it was so unnecessary. And now seeing this in comparison is just rather funny to me.
But isn't that the experience car enthusiasts want? It's a RS. More complicated, unforgiving, harsh. It adds to the experience. I wish they go a few steps further. The owner will have to unbolt the trunk lid and remove it, and the bolts are placed behind 3 layers of plastic trim pieces underneath the car and in the wheel wells. After the process, align the holes perfectly to seal it again.
@@Yvaneify 1% of the time owning this, you would want a race car. The other 99% of the time, in the real world, you would need a relatively "normal" car. I can guarantee you, the third time the owner has to stop his driving, to set up a tent so the interior doesnt get fked, he would curse the moment he bought a car with no roof.
@@SteliosE92 I hope not because it's part of the experience of owning a compromised car. Most car enthusiasts want that. That convertible top labor reminds me of the nightmares of putting up tents when we were forced to go camping as kids. Nope.
I wonder how many times Doug had to practice putting on and taking off the top before he filmed himself doing it. Definitely will be on top 5 quirks of the year.
At RennSport Reunion last fall, Porsche was displaying this car and explained the engineering team wanted to sell it without a roof entirely, as a pure spyder. If the regular boxster had the option of having the manual top I would totally get it. Not for the weight saving, but for durability. It’s a system that will never need expensive maintenance
The roof top situation is super cool imo. Especially if you like to play around with mechanical solutions. After all this a good weather car, on which you rarely will perform a "roof job"

$160k car takes 5 minutes and three trips to opposite sides of the vehicle to put top up or down with SEVERAL opportunities to damage both the top and the paint exterior during installation/removal. $30k Miata drops top from the driver seat in 2 seconds, puts it back up in 4 seconds with no chance for damage unless you attempt at over 40mph. It's like Germany gives incentives to their engineers to make things overly complicated, difficult and convoluted.
@@bryanachee7133 Why should that make a difference? This car here seams to use the same amount of space for its roof than the Miata. It just has the worst roof design. The miata roof is also very light, so that can't make the difference.

@@timeslowingdown I’m referring to the 911 models. But this one is no excuse either. Yes it has the GT3 engine, but $215k for a Boxster with a labor intensive top mechanism and fabric pull handles is just crazy. But the fanboys are drooling.
I have one (since last year) so I should know 🧐: The weissach package does NOT save any weight (the front hood is made from carbon fiber anyway, with the weissach package you can see it from the outside, without weissach it is in car color)... only the magnesium wheels do save weight... (I do not have)... I also owned a 981 spyder and the roof of the RS is really terrible (even in comparison) but necessary since the air intakes take most of the room the top would go... it takes about 2 minutes to open or close if you are on your own and have experience with it. To get back to Doug: The driving experience is insane (!)... Never had such a great ride... so go get one if you can find one...
i dont know about you, but in the world of everything is automated, touch screen and electric. i would love a car company who make cars that i can interact and have a personal relationship with.
I grew up driving manual transmission cars, then had some automatic ones and then a sports car with paddles. I thought I was so cool having paddles but just drive it in auto most of the time. I drove a friens 6 speed manual coupe a little while ago and loved how engaging and fun it was. You just can't beat stick shift for driver experience imho
Like fondue where I don't want to go out to a restaurant just to cook my own food, I don't want to spend $200K on a car, only to spend 20 mins on my convertible top. I feel like I need an engineering degree to do all of this
I mean I know its an RS, but at least give your customers the option of a power folding roof, or at least something less complex than that crap😂. Ive seen other porsches with tops that are basically just as complicated, it seems absurd at that price point.
I feel like designers make putting the top on difficult as a way to humiliate you for trying to drive their purpose built open top sportscar with the top on 😂
The top- it isn't an issue. You are getting this car to NOT have a top. It's a fair weather car, top to be deployed in case of accidental rain exposure. That's all there is to it.
Which is fine in CA or AZ. In places with variable weather in times of year you want to drive it (FL, NY..) it's absurd. Would be an amazing summer daily if you could choose automatic roof for an extra 36lbs.
for 200K, I'm not assembling my convertible top. How embarrassing is it to be stuck assembling/disassembling you convertible top while everyone waits on you?
thank you so much for reiterating what everyone else already said, and Doug emphacized quite a bit... we all are so thankful you take the time to post the blatantly obvious
I don't usually like Doug's videos, but I liked this one because of all the effort it takes into putting on (and taking off) the top 🤣 - and I imagine that future generations of Spyders will have automatic roof operations thanks to Doug's video 🤣
@@danielpope6498 You're right, they are a dime a dozen... Just like I said. people won't buy ANY boxer (as special and unique and great as it is) when a Carrera s convertible exists. That's why I almost never even see standard 718 spyders on the road, let alone an RS. No one wants to spend the money on a boxster 718 Spyder/RS, considering the other options out there for the price that are far more usable.
@@danielpope6498 That's like buying a GT4 RS instead of a 911 Turbo or GT3 touring... At almost the same prices. unless You're using it strictly for track use.
@Daveyboy_GolfR except a 911 Turbo or GT3 touring are both far more desirable than a regular Carrera S. The Spyder RS is an extremely special car with a special driving experience, the Carrera S is... not that
@@danielpope6498 You're right it isn't close to as special. But a Carrera 4s and 911 Turbo in daily driving are very very similar. I should know... 0-60 in the Carrera 4s is approximately 3.0. as opposed to the Turbo which is approx 2.5. Unless you're really opening up and getting up at far beyond the speed limit, both vehicles feel pretty similar in stop and go traffic and on twisties. Sure the turbo does feel faster obviously, but in terms of everything else, weight distribution, steering feel, balance, handling, aggressivity, directness, nimbleness, transmission, up shifts / downshifts. Ultimately the Carrera 4S is 90% as enjoyable as the Turbo on daily streets. But the Turbo is almost double the price of the 718 spider RS. Whereas the Carrera 4S is only a little more money than that RS. And one last thing, there is absolutely nothing dime a dozen feeling about a 992 Carrera 4s vert. It's one of the greatest cars I've ever driven. I believe it to be the perfect daily driving true sports car at under 200k,
I love how Doug's score never match the comments he makes throughout the video. Goes on about how much more practical it is compared to the GT4RS and that overall (despite optional seats) it's a more comfortable ride, yet gives it an identical score...

its 991.2 gt3rs PDK and suspension with the 992 gt3 engine. the 718 chassis is the only "boxster" thing about this. its just a mid engine gt3
It’s a GT4RS with no roof if the GT4RS is worth 250k this is worth 200k
killing the gasoline 718 is such a sad thing to see, personally i think the GTS is a perfect all-round car.
@@shmeevann i Hope they will regret that in dales
Dales will never recover
of course you do, but you cannot afford one, will be able to afford one, so why should anyone care what you think about it?
@@slowery43 oh, you know him personally?
Agreed. The most ridiculous convertible top ever. Would never pay $200K for this Boxter.
So basically the roof is designed to never go up…got it… 🍻
Doug blepping while setting up the roof took me out 😂 7:59
I can't believe Germans came up with that roof mechanism. They must have been drinking 😂😂
Only Porsche can take a base level car, slap a few stickers on it, call it a limited edition, charge $100k more and get away with it.
I work at Porsche and we also did Cocaine that night
@@SkippyPB. Base level? But has the 911 GT3 engine... however, they really do gouge you on the options, which is true of every modern Porsche model that I'm aware of.
@@timeslowingdown I’m referring to the 911 models. But this one is no excuse either. Yes it has the GT3 engine, but $215k for a Boxster with a labor intensive top mechanism and fabric pull handles is just crazy. But the fanboys are drooling.
@@SkippyPB. The boxster / cayman interiors are very "base level" though I will also give you that. I also think it's too expensive lol
Never had such a great ride... so go get one if you can find one...
sure you have this car .....sure ............
For that kind of money the process to put the top on is insane. This is the reason and the sole reason alone I won't be ordering one. 🤣
You are a real stickler.
i dont know about you, but in the world of everything is automated, touch screen and electric. i would love a car company who make cars that i can interact and have a personal relationship with.
Are you trying to bust all up in this cars guts? 😂
I swear he closed his eyes in a moment of joy while driving a 200k car in anger ;) Gotta love Doug. He's a car guys car guy.
Doug: its better than a 911!
Also Doug: gives it a lower Doug score than the same-year 911
@@Screamn. yes but it’s the limited edition S/T he scores above which has the Gt3RS engine and manual gear box and lightweight flywheel !
are u blind bro? look again
As I say car in spot 2 above the Spyder RS is the limited edition 2024 911 S/T whats the problem ?
@@antonylacroix6475 are u also blind bro? i was replying to the OP. if i was replying to u there would be an @ with ur name like this comment.
Probably - 😊I’m a very old serial porsche owner - have a good day
I grew up driving manual transmission cars, then had some automatic ones and then a sports car with paddles. I thought I was so cool having paddles but just drive it in auto most of the time. I drove a friens 6 speed manual coupe a little while ago and loved how engaging and fun it was. You just can't beat stick shift for driver experience imho
200k for a tent...
Geez!!! I fell asleep when Doug explained how to use the top...hahaha!!! 😂
That top situation is like putting tarpaulin over the top of truck bed and do all the roping & knotting😂
If Doug's wife could make that intake noise, they'd have 10 kids by now. 😉
Like fondue where I don't want to go out to a restaurant just to cook my own food, I don't want to spend $200K on a car, only to spend 20 mins on my convertible top. I feel like I need an engineering degree to do all of this
You don't need an engineering degree to put up your top. After all, the guy that designed it didn't have one.
@@AJGreen-cn8kk lmfao.
@@AJGreen-cn8kk even though you are probably wrong, it's funny as hell
You probably are an engineer to afford this
I mean I know its an RS, but at least give your customers the option of a power folding roof, or at least something less complex than that crap😂. Ive seen other porsches with tops that are basically just as complicated, it seems absurd at that price point.
I can see how good it is going to work. "its pouring, lets pull aside and start installing the top for the next 15 minutes "
By the time you got the top on, the rain would probably be over.
The issue is it takes forever to install
@@philbrick5 so rare to use, it isn’t an issue.
Imagine an American car company attempted a roof like this.
$200k for a 718 spyder is insane no matter what it packs
@Acs2046 yes they totally couldnt do a normal convertible top you are very smart man!!!
The hard top is 300k so technically this car offers a 100k savings.
I would love to hear the discussions of German engineers designing the top...
Having so much blank switches even after spending so much extra on options on an already expensive car!! 😂😂
for 200K, I'm not assembling my convertible top. How embarrassing is it to be stuck assembling/disassembling you convertible top while everyone waits on you?
Top down, store inside. Easy lol
@@4liter Riiiiight. Pay 200K for a Lego top. When a cloud decides to open up on you, it will stop raining before you get the top on.
So… not only does the car look horrible with the top on, you also need a doctorate in physics to install it. Yeah I’d take the GT4RS.
200K for a manual roof that I have to park the car to install and remove. Yeah no thanks 😂. I’ll stick to my miata
You're embarrassing yourself
GREAT Review as always. I would not pay $200k for a car that comes with all those hustle. It's so inconvenient... 😅
soooooo proud of doug for not wearing 2 shirts anymore ❤
Doug the kind of guy to strictly follow the speed limit when playing GTA V.
Doug sounds like he’s hiding Emo Phillips inside him sometimes.
Doug is a type of a guy to call his wife Camry
Nice looking, but good lord, that top.
thank you so much for reiterating what everyone else already said, and Doug emphacized quite a bit... we all are so thankful you take the time to post the blatantly obvious
@@slowery43 Thanks!
@@slowery43Bro is mad😅
Imagine pay hundreds of thousands for a convertible that is less convenient than a 30k camaro 😂
I don't usually like Doug's videos, but I liked this one because of all the effort it takes into putting on (and taking off) the top 🤣 - and I imagine that future generations of Spyders will have automatic roof operations thanks to Doug's video 🤣
I thought that the Citroën c3 pluriel was crazy 😂
That's not a top that's a tonneau no way I'm paying 160k for that

As great as it is... You don't buy ANY boxster When a 911 Carrera S convertible exists at a similar price.
This is a much cooler car than a carrera S. Those are a dime a dozen compared to any RS car
I believe it to be the perfect daily driving true sports car at under 200k,
omg is this complicated with that roof 🤦♂
Taking out a topless car on a sunny day just to squint the whole time you drive it 😂😂😂 ohhhh Doug
I love how Doug's score never match the comments he makes throughout the video. Goes on about how much more practical it is compared to the GT4RS and that overall (despite optional seats) it's a more comfortable ride, yet gives it an identical score...
