    The holes in the break disk have two purposes: cooling and better breaking in wet conditions. Water on the hot break disk turns into steam an this holes enable the steam to lead away. The guys at Porsche are since decades in Motorsport and knew exactly what they do. Even the CEO of Porsche has race license and a phd in engeneering.

      @savagegeese  2 года назад +468

      And Brembo who manufacturers the brakes (engineers) have told us these are the worst designs for track use and are moving away from them whenever possible. Cup cars dont use them and newer porsche brakes are moving to divets instead of holes because of cracking issues. Cross drilling is a legacy design. The worst part aside from cracking is all of the benefits you mention go away when holes are clogged with iron and pad material. Which happens under hard track use in a matter of 5-6 laps.

      I've had open top sports cars since I was 21 and quickly realized that the experience is with a no-top target, rag top-down or power-retracting hardtop down makes driving so much more enjoyable that I think I will always have at least one open air car. In fact, ever since I bought my first convertible I've had a second car that I'd take to less-than-perfectly safe areas - typically inner city. My first "second car" cost me $300 but I drove it on snow/ice covered roads and through heavy downpours. Every time I replaced the "beater" it cost more until it was a new Mazda 3 sedan 2.5. Maybe something like Mark's LC500 or even the 500h will replace the Mazda 3 some day.

    I’m one of the owners of this car.
    I noticed and felt exactly same things as you guys ,but please listen as it can be fixed easily;
    - adjust front and rear sway bars to full (soft) settings, it took me about 20 minutes on my 1st try, adjustments were there by Porsche to switch the ride to more street manner n it did for me (felt 20% easily smoother from switching the Rear hard - Front mid ex setting) + its in the owners manual but arguably explained differently.
    - engine noise: though you didn’t mention the factory force closing of exhaust valves untill 4k+ reached (even though you pressed a button to let it be open all the time from 0 rpm) you could buy a hack to force and bypass the factory to either switching to on- off - auto, plus you could buy an overaxle pipes it will bring back the lively engine characteristics like the prior gen + you wouldn’t void warrenty.
    Overall one of the greatest sweet spot of GT cars this era period.
    For the gear ratios on the manual you will actually be more grateful that its tall on the street as i did because you don’t need a big power and its more compliant than a small ratio. (did own an evo 8 and an s2k) this is heaven when we compare gears lol

      well you can buy a turbo with a 6.000rpm redline and your second gear ends a lot earlier. What people don’t understand is that the 6 Gear is already at 4.000rpm at 150km/h (I live in Germany btw) which is cruising speed here. If they would shorten the gears significantly the vmax would go down and I would be at nearly 5.000rpm. Which is just to much to get from A to B.

    The 981 engine doesn't "die off on the top". It's dual 6-800 cell catalytics plug it up top from achieving significant pull. You put in 200cell cats and they make 405-410 crank hp with no tuning. Just 4hp less than a 4L

    Interesting that Jack states the 981 GT4 engine dies off near redline. I didn't experience that in the few that I've driven. Porsche says it makes peak power at 7400 which is only 400 below redline.

    • @razorworks111
      @razorworks111 2 года назад

      Yeah, I was surprised to hear that as well. I've got a 981 GT4, and that observation differs from my experience. But then again, I had the ECU tuned , and updated the headers some time ago, so perhaps thats alleviated the issue.

    • @ky7037
      @ky7037 2 года назад

      Even if it does die off near redline, you can’t feel it to confidently say you notice it. Blown out of proportion IMO. The motor is roaring at those RPMs; no one’s feeling a power dip.

    Jack's face at 10:56! Haha. I've got one of these and that's exactly the feeling when you floor it, ease off, downshift a few times, the revs hover around 5k and you just want to mash your foot through the floor again. You feel like a racecar driver. It sounds like a racecar., it races for the redline like a racecar... Yes there are fairly average cars that are just as quick, but that is totally missing the point. These NA flat 6 engines make you feel like a child.

    Buying a new Porsche already puts you in rare air as far as income, buying a $120k Porsche for mostly track usage puts you in further rarified air. Despite the new GT4 being a spectacular car, for the average person with realistic funds who will mostly use it on the street, a pre-owned 981 Cayman S with the 3.4 normally aspirated flat 6 is probably the better overall car owning and attainable experience. Just don't drive the new GT4 back to back with it or you will end up hating life.

    Pardon my ignorance Mr. Geese.... but how are you guys happier thrashing this around over the ZL1-1LE? I'm confused. I mean, I could have gotten one of these but went with the ZL1-1LE instead. I've already gotten used to full throttle acceleration and it doesn't scare me anymore. I just feel that the ZL1-1LE is the better track car all around. I mean it beats the GT4 in pretty much every category. Can you educate me as to why this one is so much more desirable aside form the Porsche emblem on the hood?

    • @savagegeese
      @savagegeese  2 года назад +3

      The ZL1 1LE is one of the best track cars of this generation, extremely capable. It just trades off a lot in terms of street use, visability, sound, auto trans does not match PDK. It also feel big compared to the 718. (Mid vs front engine) But... the ZL1 is again an incredible machine and value will be worth a lot someday.

    • @Turbo329
      @Turbo329 2 года назад

      @@savagegeese thanks for responding! I totally agree with its shortcomings. In fact, I think those shortcomings become more readily apparent once you’ve driven so many other cars that do other things well. I guess that maybe it all comes down to personal comfort. The bumps in the road do make for a jarring ride and I guess the Porsche does make a better daily driver hands down. I wish you guys could thrash a ZL1-1LE on the track. Maybe I’ll take a drive out to Michigan (or was Autobahn in Illinois? I forget) next season so yall can have a go in it! Thanks for the amazing content! As always it’s so informative and only a teenie weenie bit biased which I can respect. We all have biases so I ain’t mad atcha. Hahaha

    Porsche spent years saying Cayman was stuck with long gear ratios because they couldn’t fit anything else in and not because it would be faster than the 911. Then magically fit in shorter ratios on the GT4 RS. Another great video! With your technical excellence, I hope you are now on Porsche’s short list for new cards to review.

    • @TheChannel1978
      @TheChannel1978 2 года назад

      Andreas Breuninger freely admits that the Cayman sits under the 911 in terms of performance. Of course he won't admit that long gearing also takes away some of the way of driving it on the road. Bit of a shame. I'd rather have Porsche detune the engine and give the manual shorter ratios

  • @helbonygaard838
    @helbonygaard838 2 года назад

    It deserves a manual! If you are PDK-person I would suggest a GT4 RS. But as a real drivers car (not all about record lap times, but more about being rewarded while setting any lap time) with a more timeless beauty (I even find it more beautiful than the GT3) to it, the GT4 is simply one of the peaks in car history!

    So, Mark/Jack. Would you rather have a GT4 for $150k (we know you won't find a base MSRP car), or an Evora GT for around $100k?

  • @jameswillard1
    @jameswillard1 2 года назад +2

    Spectacular video as usual, however I actually completely disagree with both of you about the Evora vs GT4 on the street. I owned both an Evora 400 (pretty much identical mechanically to the GT you drove) and a 718 GT4 at the same time and I found for street driving the Evora was much more fun mainly because the steering had even better feedback (not night and day just the Lotus is absurdly good), the suspension was more compliant, and the Lotus engine is much more characterful at normal road speeds where the GT4’s long manual gearing meant you weren’t often in the fun zone that often and below 5,000RPM it sounds diesel like especially as the exhaust valves have the weirdest opening and closing at random times throughout the rev range. The GT4 is just a more serious car and although I only had time to track it twice it’s definitely more track focused, but not necessarily any more fun. The biggest surprises were that although both cars had similar power ratings and weighed pretty much the same, the GT4 is significantly faster and made me question if the Lotus was really a 400HP car.....or the 4.0L in the Porsche was just underrated? Also, surprising was my GT4 has had several annoying squeaks from the hatchback area while the Lotus is as drum tight as any car I’ve driven. Anyways, they are both exceptional cars that to me are pretty much equals and having previously owned a 2016 981 GT4 I think the 4.0L is a far superior engine to the 3.8L despite that engine sounding significantly better at low to mid revs.
