I owned the 2013 base model 981 for about 4 years. I would say that all of these naturally aspirated motors love being up there in the high end. The 2.7 only had 200 pound*feet of torque. It came alive and was super fun anything above 4000 RPM. And, yes....2nd and 3rd gear is right where they like it for canyons.
Food for thought: We can't complain about a stretched gear relation for a car that was meant to track, we all know that this will make the difference in lap' battle, for example ! C'mon...buy something else, it's just perfect as it sir. Good review.
You probably like tape players in your car and princess dial phones and adjustable valves and adjusting carburetors all for greater engagement. Shifting takes most people about three days to learn- not rocket science - lots of high school girls all do it too!
I love being able to gauge how obscenely fast Matt is driving just this one video, from the gearing discussion. Like ohh yeah there's third revved out again.. :D
He was definitely buzzing by, but the car was just taking it so ridiculously smooth. Almost mesmerizing to see the reflector markers whizzing past the camera.
I'd take the Boxster Spyder too, as my idea of the perfect sports car, is a convertible, but, this is probably still the best hard top sports car on the market right now.
“If you have a GT3 or a 2016 GT4, wait till the next one” really interested in the reasons for that comment. What does he expect the next gen will feature?
Xan I really think/hope that porsche is trying to keep the GT division NA (with the exception of the GT2 of course). This new flat 6 is good for almost a decade of EU emissions regulations with the particulate filter so idk why they would go turbo before that expires.
The future of the cayman is unknown. Porsche is doing tests for an electric version behind the scenes and are considering a new cheaper entry level sportscar (which might keep the current 4 cylinder engines). This might be the last GT4 as we know it. People from the GT division pointed out they really want to stay naturally aspirated though.
@@lexus_offroad_adventures only thing that might be able to save flat 6's (especially if they come with a manual) is electronically controlled cam timing like on the Koenigsegg Gemera. That way the so called "eco mode" can be down tuned extremely hard in order to meet emissions. Going off how the next M3/M4 after the G8X seires is going to most likely be 4 cyl with hybrid assist, most likely Porsche would be going a similar route eventually
I'm new to German cars ,I recently got a used 2001 Audi A4 Quattro and it came with a Universal HKS exhaust system with HKS headers ,I never dyno'd it but it feels fast when I'm on 2nd and 3rd gear !.
Yeah Doug gets more viewers, but you get the people that appreciate the car and the drive a lot more! Gonna be looking for one of these used with the sweet gearing when my Giulia comes off lease!
Picked the GT4 over July and brought it to canyons and race track. Car is really comfortable. The only down side of the car is the exhaust note are very boring due to the GPF filter installed from the factory.
I’ve driven the original GT4. Amazing car in the canyons but I think I’d get the upcoming GTS 4.0 over the GT4. The GTS 4.0 is going to be the easier car to live with.
If a GT4 popped up with the Shark Werks regearing I'd buy it, I don't think that's going to happen so it's looking like a manual GT3 or the 718 Spyder, whichever comes along with the right spec first.
Matt, no doubt the gearing is tall, but in terms of high speeds at redline in 2nd and 3rd gear, isn’t the same true of the GT3? I think 2nd in that car tops out around 80 and third around 110. That’s in the same ballpark of the GT4 but the GT3 never receives that complaint. What do you think?
Nice car and rolex gmt nice mechanical watch like the manual 6 speed. It's a grand tourer that's why gearing is taller. The after market gearing is work for daily driving. Thanks for sharing.
The perfect tire for any condition is the PS4S , installed those on my 981 GT4 and now wet, cold or hot the grip is there and the rears are 305, cup 2s are only better for track use plus they last only around 10K miles
Disagree about the wing risers. With the standard risers you can see over the wing. With any of the wing risers it blocks the very top of the rear window so you can't see very far. You also can't see the driver of the car that's following you. You'd have to go up around 5" over stock to completely unblock the rear view. In the end I went for RSNV risers because they look in proportion, they are well made and are the best price.
Thanks man! That is true - to be FULLY out of view, they would need to be disproportionally tall. With the RSNV's, they're out of the center of the field of view, but also not blocking the entire top portion, so you still get a sliver of the further view as well.
I'm a GT3 guy but friend races prepped (track only) Cayman. These cars are purposely held back, with built motors these blitzkrieg tracks, its the balance and handling. If you could only just get the GT3 block as an option lol, and still do the trans mod which is basically mandatory, it would be basically the best sports car available.
I'm on my second Cayman currently - 987.2S in manual. I'm lasting for Ferraris and such, but honestly this car fulfills almost all of my sports car desires. I have a good aftermarket exhaust, so if you trade speed for gear rowing it's probably as satisfying as the above 718. No question GT4 is the better car, but it's also probably the best sports car in the world.
I own one and found the gearing to not be the MASSSIVE issue that folks are making it out to be. I am doing mountain driving in NC.And I can see out the back just fine. In addition, 85% of max torque is there at 3,000 RPM, 90% at 4,000 RPM and 100% at 5,000 to 7,000 RPM. So the most torque advantage you would gain with a different gear set ($8,000 to $10,000 as I understand it) is 5% or so. You'd get more revs though!!!! Torque delivered through the gear ratio is what accelerates the car, so it would be faster in your 2nd gear acceleration, but you would have an ealier shift. With 12 years of car racing experince I can tell you that he who shifts less is faster (unless PDK...). In closing, this is the best street car I have driven, my racing buddy rode with me on The Tail of The Dragon. His observations? Faster and better than a GT3. He has a GT3 RS and now a GT2 RS and multiple Cup cars. I also have the 718 GT4 Motosports race car.....but it's PDK.....
@thesmokingtire Porsche could learn a few things from Corvette or GM. Porsche could implement a camera rearview mirror & the PDR. Of course closer gears for both manual and PDK would be awesome and HP/TQ of GT2/GT3RS would be nice. A faster steering rack would be great too.
My friends at the Nordschleife have been watching Porsche run their test mule. The car needs close to 500 hp, a close-ratio manual gearbox and it'll become the perfect Porsche in my mind.
This has to be one of the most beautiful cars in existence. I think it comes down to it's proportions, absolutely spot on. Those wheels don't hurt either 🤩
Porsche claims 718 GT4 ring time of 7:28 with 245f/295r cup 2’s.... Porsche claims 718 GTS 2.5t ring time of 7:40 on 235f/265r 4s’s....What happens if you put the GTS on same size cup 2’s???
Great car. a friend has one. I have a manual GT3, so as you say no need to get this, but it's a truly special car. completely agree re the gearing, which is why I love my GT3. anyway, great review, looks awesome in yellow.
Love this car. Love this channel. Always fun to watch and always informative. Not only that, but you sound a lot like Malcolm Nance, the cyber-intelligence analyst who's one of my heroes these days.
Matt, what do you make of the new GTS 4.0 models? They're basically the standard Cayman/boxster with the engine from this car. The only difference being that they produce 394 hp instead of 414, and redline at 7.8 instead of 8; all through a software change. At the same price point as the c8, and with a manual gearbox, do you think they make sense?
Now I’m ready for a GT4 RS; put a real GT engine in it, fix the gearing, add a bunch of magnesium bits to help inflate the price and lower the weight. Boom! Perfect mid-engine sports car.
the GTS 4.0 is like $8-10k cheaper id just get the GTS since i don't really intend to go on the track to warrant the worse ride that comes with the car being stiffer
I wish Matt would have reviewed the PDK version. Im over 5 minutes in and he's still talking about the same gearing issues he talked out in the last GT4 review. I'm out, and gonna search for a PDK review since I'm not also about long ass gearing.
Good stuff as always, thanks ! Just one thing : in all these years you've been doing those tunnel sound recordings - has anyone ever told you that the viewers only hear distortion , with just a tiny bit of what the actual car sound might be ?
No ones gonna mention the Huracan Performante at 4:34 on the side of the road. Also at 6:28 they are recording Matt, I found that kind of funny, you have a freaking Lamborghini Huracan Performante but you are recording a GT4.
I have a 981 cayman s manual and I love it to death. For some reason I like the sound of my car over this. My car has the sports exhaust too but for some reason this sounds bit more like a BMW straight 6 than a 981
I agree I love the way the 3.4 sounds. I drove it in a rented 991 Carrera. It sounds sooo good from inside the car. In the hills I chased a 981 boxster I think with sports exhaust because in the 911 with the windows up I could easlly hear the boxster crackle and pop on the downshift.
Quick note: it's 309 TQ, not 390 Serious question... From a strictly performance perspective... SS 1LE or GT4? I currently have a 18' 2SS 1LE and I love it from a performance standpoint. 3 more years and it will be time to trade in. Right now the replacement options are a PDK GT4 or the upcoming C8 Z06.
Goodness me I need one of these in my life!! Always had a Cayman S on the wish list (for when the kids are old enough to have their own cars and not need rear seats). I fear that this is so special I won’t be able to afford one but still. Wow
Awesome as always, Matt. If you go back to think about it, do you really think that it is quicker to reach the limit of a 718 than it is a 911? I’ve been thinking that the 718 is so balanced and confidence inspiring that any good driver would reach the limit of how fast they’re willing to corner on a public road in it very quickly and just feel stagnant there. It seems to require too much coldblooded racey driving to go where a 718 can go and it’s too dangerous to go there outside of a safe track. Or, did you feel that the car itself reached it’s cornering speed breaking point easier than a 911?
The stands on the spoiler can be cooler.....maybe carbon fiber color, and just wide enough on front and back of spoiler with no inside little bar, maybe ad a tiny red break light on the stand of spoiler to......maybe add a couple of little yellow 2 or 3 inch mini protruding spoilers on the back of the spoiler....like little wings......would make it look more spider type like
Check ours out - more of an OEM+ styling than you described, but looks proper. Like what the factory could have done. Carbon for risers works fine but isn't really optimal, less strength.
@@rsnv_co i am sure if i had one, i wouldnt be complaining about tiny details, but its fun to design your own style.........i think the porsches can be so much nicer, have you seen the video on the lamborghini boat....as an example, the lamborghini car they show on there is very attractive.....i think porsche has their shape right, just the wheels and lights n additions can be cooler

Boxer spyder then twin turbo it
Hard top?
@@NoName-qp1op What would you call a car with a solid roof?
Sharky gonna keep making great sales on gears so long as Porsche stays the same.
it's a conspiracy lol
“If you have a GT3 or a 2016 GT4, wait till the next one” really interested in the reasons for that comment. What does he expect the next gen will feature?
The GT4 gets replaced every few years. It's not unlikely that this will be the last of its kind. 🤷
sad thing is, highly doubt it will have a flat 6
That No Limit hat is legit. Ordered! Thanks for the content as always.
I’d love it if you did an episode about the sweet spot (400hp and 3000lbs) for a street car.
I love the meta stuff!
Its called a Corvette.
Yeah Doug gets more viewers, but you get the people that appreciate the car and the drive a lot more! Gonna be looking for one of these used with the sweet gearing when my Giulia comes off lease!
Does anyone know where this road is?! need to drive on this road
Picked the GT4 over July and brought it to canyons and race track. Car is really comfortable. The only down side of the car is the exhaust note are very boring due to the GPF filter installed from the factory.
0:48 That dog was like 'Who threw this here?! I better not catch anyone littering!"
Is this the same car Doug had? Just listened to the podcast with Doug and I were pretty jealous of him 😂
It is
Lol who listens to Doug. I dunno about everyone else but I watch him
Yep same plate.
Just an edgy guy you're right he's not a car guy, he's an ENTHUSIAST. Don't hate him because he's doing better than you
Prashanth Panicker dude owns a ford GT, had a 360, vantage and a CTS V wagon. safe to say he's into performance cars lol
I’ve driven the original GT4. Amazing car in the canyons but I think I’d get the upcoming GTS 4.0 over the GT4. The GTS 4.0 is going to be the easier car to live with.
my only issue with the GTS 4.0 is that its not that much cheaper than a GT4, but yeah id still take the GTS
Shaiyan Hossain exactly
in what way? fat seats?
Bro these modern sports cars are already pretty easy to live with and you are here telling me you need something even easier
Smh
Coming from two people who probably have never driven a GT4 but are going to tell me how easy it is to live with.
I got a 2.7l 987 last year and it's so much fun to drive. i can row through every gear and its great
If a GT4 popped up with the Shark Werks regearing I'd buy it, I don't think that's going to happen so it's looking like a manual GT3 or the 718 Spyder, whichever comes along with the right spec first.
Cayman GT4 is still my dream car, for now just settling on making some mods to my G37 and enjoying the NA motors while I still can.
I've got a b ase 2018 718, 6 speed manual and IT is a great little sports car. Could NOT imagine what the GT4 brings to the platform!
Nice car and rolex gmt nice mechanical watch like the manual 6 speed. It's a grand tourer that's why gearing is taller. The after market gearing is work for daily driving. Thanks for sharing.
Great review Matt! Still killing it and always love the Porsche reviews on your channel! Thanks for the honest, straight talk as always!
In my humble opinion, this is the best looking new car on sale today.
Proud owner of a 981 Cayman S here. Best entry car to Porsche world, imo and I'm def upgrading to a GT4 once $$ allows.
Hey Matt, longtime sub here, love the vids and thanks for keeping them going. Ik times can get tough 👍. Looking forward to podcasts!!
4:35 Would you rather be driving that yellow Lambo or just stick with this yellow GT4?
Lambo if I’m single Porsche if I’m married
bigbustyebony Makes sense. Thanks for the comment bigbustyebony
I support you! That doug interview was great!!
This thing is a joy to drive. GT4 RS is going to be an absolute mosnter.
Gt4 rs?
@@turbos7780 its coming soon bro.
My friends at the Nordschleife have been watching Porsche run their test mule. The car needs close to 500 hp, a close-ratio manual gearbox and it'll become the perfect Porsche in my mind.
*underpowered monster
How does this cars gearing differ from the 997gt3?
No one ever complains about the 997gt3’s gearing…
From where can the shorter gear set be obtained? I have a 981 and would love shorter gears while leaving 6 alone for highway.
sharkwerks is your friend
Matt, what do you make of the new GTS 4.0 models? They're basically the standard Cayman/boxster with the engine from this car. The only difference being that they produce 394 hp instead of 414, and redline at 7.8 instead of 8; all through a software change. At the same price point as the c8, and with a manual gearbox, do you think they make sense?
Hey Matt, not sure if you know but this car you drove (or a similar Porsche factory car) is for sale at Porsche Monterey for MSRP.
Do you think the gearing is to meet fuel economy requirements?
WOW!
3.0L to 4.0L stroker is a quite big stroker.
33% increase in desplacement.
The secret is apparently using the first gear not for take-off only but for closed corners too! (Janko Lind Review)
I read some where stating Porsche said the reason for the gearing in this car is emissions. The 997 GT3 also had very similar gearing.
Now I’m ready for a GT4 RS; put a real GT engine in it, fix the gearing, add a bunch of magnesium bits to help inflate the price and lower the weight. Boom! Perfect mid-engine sports car.
What about the more affordable 718 GTS 4.0 instead of the GT4/Spyder if you're going to mostly use the car as a daily and in the canyons?
the GTS 4.0 is like $8-10k cheaper
id just get the GTS since i don't really intend to go on the track to warrant the worse ride that comes with the car being stiffer
I wish Matt would have reviewed the PDK version. Im over 5 minutes in and he's still talking about the same gearing issues he talked out in the last GT4 review. I'm out, and gonna search for a PDK review since I'm not also about long ass gearing.
Would you get the PDK instead because it will have proper gearing?
Love you, love the Heel and Toe gear! So happy for all of your success!
Good stuff as always, thanks !
Just one thing : in all these years you've been doing those tunnel sound recordings - has anyone ever told you that the viewers only hear distortion , with just a tiny bit of what the actual car sound might be ?
Matt! You said 390 torque at 5000 rpm, I believe it's 309 ft-lb @5K
No ones gonna mention the Huracan Performante at 4:34 on the side of the road. Also at 6:28 they are recording Matt, I found that kind of funny, you have a freaking Lamborghini Huracan Performante but you are recording a GT4.
That thing is geared like a c6 z06. It works in the vette because of the torque on ls7 but on a flat 6?
I was waiting for this video, yesterday Sunday morning with my coffee.
Si is there a review with shorter gear ratio mod? Matt, please? Maybe comparison on track...
I have a 981 cayman s manual and I love it to death. For some reason I like the sound of my car over this. My car has the sports exhaust too but for some reason this sounds bit more like a BMW straight 6 than a 981
Probably has to do with the OPF filter, it is required over seas but still is present on the US cars
Quick note: it's 309 TQ, not 390
Serious question... From a strictly performance perspective... SS 1LE or GT4? I currently have a 18' 2SS 1LE and I love it from a performance standpoint. 3 more years and it will be time to trade in. Right now the replacement options are a PDK GT4 or the upcoming C8 Z06.
@17:08 coming up it looks like a F360 or 430 from back in the day.
Yellow and the vents
So what is the cost of parts and labor to fix the transmission gears?
One of my favorite porsches of all time and it's stick
Or, did you feel that the car itself reached it’s cornering speed breaking point easier than a 911?
im concerned about low power at the lower RPM is it okay for road driving when you don't wanna rev high?
Would you go from a lighter 2.5 GTS that can easily be modified or std 71& GT4?
what gear set ? as you cannot change 2nd !! and AQ final drive is imo is a tad TOO low. you need a final drive at about 15% lower and anew 6th gear.
Funny to see Doug and Matt review the exact same car. Doug is the guy who drives his 2006 Hyundai Sonata to cars and coffee and asks a McLaren owner what kind of MPGs he gets; Matt is the guy that drives to a track day with a second set of wheels strapped to a rack on his 964 C2.
Great review! I am not really a Porsche guy but THIS Cayman GT4 is SWEET!
For godsake get a gimbal when walking around the car. I get seasick from the shaking.
I have the 981 spyder but would only go up to the new car. Other then that at the price point, i don’t see anything interesting. Add catless headers and a tune and you really got something.
Great review! these videos make car buying so easy, thanks for providing the insight!
