Getting Coffee In A PDK GT4: Is It Better Than A Manual?

  • I get behind the wheel of Porsche's automatic 718 GT4, the first time the GT4 has been offered with a PDK gearbox. Question is, is it better than the amazing manual gearbox?

    From Porsche:
    True to their Motorsport roots, the 718 Cayman GT4 and 718 Spyder share a track-bred Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) setup with adaptive dampers, helper springs on the rear axle and a ride height that is 1.18 inches (30 mm) lower than a standard 718 Boxster or Cayman. It also allows for manual adjustments of camber, toe, ride height and anti-roll bar settings. The front axle is taken from the 2018 911 GT3, while the rear axle is a specific design for the GT4 and Spyder. The brakes on both models are adopted from the 911 GT3. The standard grey cast iron rotors measure 380 mm front and
    rear. The optional Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) system features ceramic composite rotors measuring 410 mm in the front and 390 mm at the rear, providing a weight savings of approximately 50 percent from the cast iron equivalents.
    At the rear, a standard mechanical limited-slip differential with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) help maintain optimum traction. The GT4 and Spyder are fitted with specifically designed 20-inch wheels shod in UHP tires measuring 245/35 ZR 20 at the front and 295/30 ZR 20 at the rear. The wheels as standard on the 718 Spyder feature a silver finish, while the GT4 is equipped with wheels painted in Satin Platinum. Other wheels finishes are optionally available. ABS as well as electronic stability (ESC) and traction (TC) controls have been specifically calibrated for the cars and, as is typical for a GT model, ESC and TC can be switched off in two stages. The 718 Cayman GT4 is capable of lapping the “Nordschleife” more than ten seconds faster than its predecessor.

    I just collected my 718 Spyder (PDK) about 10 days ago. Picked PDK because of the horrible gearing in the manual (plus I already own a manual 911). Love the car, still running it in, biggest complaint is the sound of the exhaust and the fact it goes quiet even when the sports exhaust is on. Will be sorting that very soon.

    • @marcnobel3938
      @marcnobel3938 3 года назад +5

      Yea. The pleasure of the new EU Emission rules. The cars must be now tested in the loudest condition available. So it`s not more allowed to get louder than that even with the exhaust "open". Special sound Emission rules are also on the horizon. They plan to put microphones beside the road and send you a ticket for being to loud. Like speed cameras. Just for sound. - Sad, sad ...

    • @marcnobel3938
      @marcnobel3938 3 года назад +1

      It goes "quite" on certain RPM/Gear Combinations (So it depends on speed) because of the noise emission tests you have to pass. You need to drive by a microphone in 5 meters distance with for example 50 km/h in the 2nd or 3rd gear - than accelerate full from that point. So at this point the the exhaust has to be "silent" enough to still reach the allowed max level. So it mutes it down for test.

    I'll never understand people who hate on modern automatics, especially the PDK. If I had to guess I imagine the majority of people who say that have never gotten the chance to try it out...the experience is extremely rewarding and enjoyable, and I have just as much fun with a PDK as I do a manual.

    • @magnustan841

      What do you think of this? I get the feeling those who cry out for manuals, who overly hype manuals, are either over the age of 35 or younger enthusiasts wanting to “fit in” with other petrolheads, who themselves want to fit in with older guys. I know manuals are getting ever so slightly rarer nowadays, but an automatic can be as engaging, or even more so than an old-school manual. Manual isn’t always, 100%, better and the must-have gearbox option.

The only reason Sam has to say “controversial decision” and “Porsche enthusiasts, don’t come after me” is because unfortunately, some people don’t want to move on with technology. I know manuals are getting ever so slightly rarer nowadays, but an automatic can be as engaging, or even more so than an old-school manual. Manual isn’t always, 100%, better and the must-have gearbox option. Sam, no need to be nervous about your verdict, if the PDK GT4 is the more appropriate option, so be it.

    Makes perfect sense to me, the one caveat a purist would concede to opt for a PDK. Brings the Spyder to life finally

    Kudos to Porsche to keep offering manual transmission cars. It seems the regs are stacked against three pedals both the emissions and economy tests. The drive by noise tests have been changed but the powers that be want us all in self driving smart phones. As for acceleration figures, if the manual is only .5 seconds off the pdk, that might be insignificant if 2nd was 65 not 80mph. It should be interesting to see the response to the new Gordon Murray car that retains a manual box.

    PDk is the way to go but I believe if you have the time you can fix the gear ratio in the manual as done by one Driver that made the 2nd and 3rd gear ⚙ more usable with a better final gear to match...I'll look it up again and Share where it's from. And what do you think of the new RS version

    Glad you like it, I pick up my guards PDK on Friday, I didn’t even consider the manual after the long ratios of the previous one! Didn’t sound terrible (inside the car at least) also, may still add unsilenced race pipes 🤷🏼‍♂️🤦🏼‍♂️

      There’s only a couple of MPH difference in the gear ratio’s. Matt Farah broke it down in his review on The Smoking Tire. I think the difference is that you’re more likely to use 1st gear in a PDK.

    • @johnycarrera
      @johnycarrera 3 года назад

      @@jryalls there’s 10 mph 1-2nd then it continues more up the gears, so it’s actually considerable, real world, which is why those of us who know, know! Speed is my preference though and I wouldn’t argue with someone who just wants to go between 2 gears everywhere except the track, that’s their choice 🤷🏼‍♂️

    • @jryalls
      @jryalls 3 года назад +2

      @@johnycarrera The PDK does 79mph at the top of 2nd and the manual does 83mph. The fact of the matter is, if you want a manual buy the manual and if you want an auto you buy the auto.

    for GT4 prefer a manual. if it had more horses & quicker, then PDK. I have a manual GT3 991.2 and that's just about at the limit for me. I often think of getting a manual GT4 as the GT3 is a real handful for me. but either way, great cars.

    I'm a bit confused though honestly. I watched the video Matt Farah made with the PDK GT4 and he said the max speed per gear was almost the same between the manual and the PDK version, so it feels a bit weird to me that the PDK is that much better? Like, maybe with that 10 more nm of torque there's also a different torque curve which makes the experience better, but I also don't see how the two cars would be so different? Idk...

    According to the official Porsche numbers the PDK has 10 % lower gearing, which in addition to the slight torque advantage should make for a better response.

    Hey Sam,
    Great content, thinking about my next daily at the moment, W206 C Class Coupe or Porsche Cayman (I used to have a Boxster same era as your 911 you’re selling) so this was great!
    A question though, I’ve noticed in this & many of the destinations & I mean dealerships, etc in the UK that you & others visit, they have gravelled courtyards - what is that about?? Seems like a great way to pick up stones in your tyres & fling them at you paint when you leave 🤔
    PS just watched your latest BTG, & comments re the sale of your 911. There’s only one answer mate, “haters gotta hate” just ignore it and live your life.
    Looking forward to more great content!!
    Cheers Steve from Oz 👍🏻👍🏻

Brand new with the 20-60mm lens a second battery all for £1100!.. so six times less than the Sony A7S3 would cost when you factor in the camera body, lens, memory cards, Nd filter etc cost combined is nearly £7k!.

    Can you please tell us what speed the PDK will now do at maximum revs in 2nd and 3rd gear? Have Porsche shortened those gears to prevent the ridiculous "85mph in second gear" scenario you get with the manual? That's been putting me off getting one of these, I'd prefer maybe 70mph in 2nd gear and it would feel so much more explosive too.
