- Since it's launch there has been much hype about the Porsche Cayman 718 GT4. Can it really be as good as everyone says or is it a flawed genius ?!
Porsche GB leant me their manual GT4 for a Scottish Highlands and NC500 road trip, so while I had the car I though I had best review it and share my thoughts with you. Stay tuned for more content with this impressive car.

#PorscheCaymanGT4 #718CaymanGT4
As a 981 GT4 owner for the past few years, and hopefully many more years to come, you've pretty much summed up the entire driving/ownership experience in this video. By far THE best and most accurate video summary I have seen in the past six years. Yes, it is a shame that Porsche make it so difficult for the true enthusiasts to buy one - but even if buying on the used market, all is forgiven and forgotten once you are in the driving seat of your own GT4.
Just found this video after watching almost every 718 GT4 review out there, and I have to say yours makes me want the car even more than ever!
You eased my worries about the long gearing, the comfort on long drives, and the fact that you still love car after spending so time driving it in a short period says how livable it is as a real car instead of just a toy. Thanks for taking the time to make this video!
Thanks Dude. Such great cars 👌👍
+1.. Autotrader is your friend.. The trip sounds like a great outing.. Thanks for the video clip..
Thanks for watching!
This is the closest that I will ever get to driving a GT4 by watching Pete’s eloquent presentation on this car, hat off to Porsche for blessing rich enthusiast with a superior naturally aspirated engine coupled onto a manual gearbox. Mare mortals like me are left consigned to imagination. Thanks PED!
Fantastic review ped, Not really been a Porsche fan not because they aren't great cars but because other cars fitted my life. The GT4 looks absolutely stunning from all angles, I also totally agree with you about fussy steering wheels and unnecessary touch screen systems.
Last bit of road grime before taking it back.
Shame it had to go back but great review.
Not bad fuel economy same as our 3.0 V6 but I bet you had more fun.
Another gorgeous piece of engineering that I cant afford. Great vid.
Here sits a big piece for Porsche History, it will go down in the books as a true drivers delight! ACE review -ace car, me that and brands hatch ALLDAY!
Love that car mate. Looks like you had a great time!
Epic trip…epic car 👌
718 GT4 & spyder I might add, are judged to perfection, you've completely captured and enunciated the experience, a very enjoyable watch PG - is trepadatiuosly a word?
It is now Bud 😜😂👍
LOL. I think trepidatious was just the word I was looking for seeing some of that standing water. 🤣
Hi Roger if you ever want to review my GT4 message me 😁 1200 miles now so can be tickled
@@PetrolPed +1.. Hilariously trepadatiuos-ly.. What he said "It is now"..
Another great video Pete. I've had my 981 GT4 for 18 months now and it's definitely one of the best cars I've owned and driven. Mine has the Clubsport pack and I recently did a 500 mile round trip to Wales over a couple of days and it was so easy to drive and no problems at all, even the carbon buckets were incredibly comfortable on the trip. It's a great car for those B road blasts and I just cruised on the motorways when I needed to use them. Even in heavy traffic on the M25 it was fine to drive. Mine's a keeper as I'd struggle to replace it unless I spent another £75K on a 991.2 GT3, which for now is way out of budget. The GT4 is a great car.
What a great review. What awesome roads. Thanks Petrol Ped. The 718 4.0 Manual is a car I would like to call my own some day.
You really bring up the exact questions I was wondering about, such as what it's like on the motorway for looong hauls, what's it like inside the cabin on that type of journeys etc. Despite Porsche's ridiculous GT4 policy, I'd probably just get a GTS 4.0.
Manual box every day of the week for me. That 6 speed looks great.
It is 👍
Evening buddy. I am soooooo looking forward to the NC footage. This looks a great car, I’ve never driven a Porsche still as of yet. 👍👍👍👍
Peter…Whilst I have been a Mercedes and Land Rover owner for around 27 years, Porsche are very high on my next car list. I understand your feelings for this car…I understand the appeal of the manual gearbox. I have driven around 800,000 manual mikes and still to this day try to ensure that nobody in the car can feel any changes..I was taught that only the engine and gearbox should know a change had happened…but in 2002 I had a problem with my leg which means I would have the PDK…it would still be wonderful.I am hoping that I can get to a Macan Turbo or maybe if I took a serious number of brave pills, the Cayenne Turbo I can see available right now..loaded with all the good things and 3,000 miles…it has been on my screen for a week!! Stay safe ….looking forward to more NC500! Richard😃😃😃😃😃😃 (Note..Hilary could never get in the Cayenne nor the 911 GT3RS Weissach that I REALLY want!!😎😎😎)
Great review, and concur with your comments. Mine is a manual, and supa happy with it as my daily. I do not think the gearing is to high, I use it to my advantage. I call it my 'Go Kart'. Easier to drive than my GT3 and Turbo.
Excellent video (editing, no hyperbole and rhetoric, real world driving application and insights, good information)! Do try a manual GTS,, your comparison will interesting. PS string a mesh bag between the seats = perfect bottle holder, or a stiff bag in the passenger foot well.
Thanks 👍
I'm quite new to your channel and enjoying the content. Next purchase, GT4 for the summer.
Welcome aboard 👍
Really enjoyed that, the gt cars are very special. Swapped out my cup 2’s for ps4s on my gt3 which are a better all round tyre for year round road use
Stunning looking car, and clearly a joy to drive. I so need to go back up to Scotland!!
Yup, I love em!
I'd agree that buying is a challenge, though part of the specialness is in them being fairly limited run. I reckon if you ask around you'd get one. I've had a Cayman R and 981 GT4 from the same dealer group and was offered a 718 GT4 slot early in the year. I declined as I really wanted a Spyder this time around (now they really are impossible to get!); subsequently have put myself back on the waiting list for a GT4 too. Will see how lucky I get in the new year. They are very special cars.
Great video. Liked the format and content. Just taken delivery of a Boxster 25. I’m a manual guy but went for the PDK. It is such a good gearbox. Try the PDK, I think you’ll be surprised.
I’ve driven lots of PDK cars. Brilliant gearbox. Maybe the best out there 👍
Still love the manual 👍
Thats better fuel economy than my RS3. I've said this before but I think the GT4 is the best looking car on sale today.
It's just perfect. It summs up what a driving machine should be and look like. I love the base 718 too.
I think I'd have the manual, if anything for the auto blip. The best manual car I've owned recently was a i30N. It had a great manual box with fantastic auto blip, the GT4 must be epic.
I love the i30N too 👍
shorter gear set is a must. And single-mass flywheel if you're at it. OPF/GPFs need to go at the very least.
Scotland FTW. I've driven over the Cairngorms in a non-Type R and it's a lot of fun
Another great video - so watchable and informative but you gotta sort out the exterior PTC sound - it’s square so a mismatch somewhere. Interior stuff is great.
Can life get any better! You lucky chap😎
Nice car, nice roads and a great review.Looks like you had a good time in Caledonia.Looking forward the the upcoming vids of the trip.
Love that spec. Going to have to research NC500, and take the OG M2 up. Great vlog!
Great video and insight into a truly fantastic car. Looks amazing and I’m sure as you say utterly wonderful as a manual. Can’t wait to see more 😉👍🏻
Mega cool drivers car...liked it very much 👌😎
Epic! Looks great with the road grime - shows it’s been worked!
Sorry I cropped you out of shot Bud 😜😂
@@PetrolPed 😂
Looks good dirty.I did Loch Lomond to Stansted airport 425 miles in 5hr 58.
In a 160k Passat TDI
Great vid Mate, I got offered a cancelled order on a GT4 from my local dealer and it would of been my first Porsche, I could even choose the spec, it’s the Gt3/Rs models you cannot get, I’m off to Scotland with Petrolhead tours in my R8 V10plus next week, bring on the rain 🤣
You have encapsulated everything that i look for in an aspirational car... My 7 has spoiled me for pure driving but I have always wondered where I would look for a more comfortable Normalish alternative -- I think this might be it ..... Having heard little subtle “in the know” comments about this car ... I think it just made it to the top of the list ... Thank you great overview. 👍😀
I used to have a Caterham 7 Superlight. Loved that car 👌
What a smoking hot car Sir Pete! Looks like that trip was a trip to remember. Then did your face hurt by the end of the trip from all those smiles per gallon?? Also wow those views were fantastic!
Hopefully I'm one of the first watching this whilst I work!
You sure are! 👍🏻
👍
I enjoyed watching the Video
Hi Ped
Excellent review yet again.🤗 I can appreciate your appreciation of the manual box, but I have to admit my preference for PDK. Still think the Boxster GTS would be my choice, as I love open top motoring, and I would lay even money that you would go that route also. Think about it you could hear the exhaust note above the birds singing in the hedgerows😉
Lovely wheather!Amazing driver's car.
Reminds me of a trip to Scotland from London. We dropped our eldest off at the in-laws in the forest of Dean and headed to the lakes for one night then did the entire west coast of Scotland and then headed to Thurso, then headed over to Fraserburgh. Slept in the car one night. Headed back Inland then across to Gretna back down to the Forest via Carlisle. Picked up little one then back to London. We did 2500 miles in 4 and a bit days. The funniest thing was the car we had was a brand new escort 1.8 zetec. Sounded really sporty (too sporty) we needed to fill up with screen wash,.so I popped the bonnet at a station in Scotland and found that the entire airbox/induction system was missing. 😂 We also thought we spotted the Loch Ness monster, turned out it was a bit tree washed up on the shore 😂. Was still a great trip, great scenery and drive.
Great review! Now the GT4 RS has been spotted in my hometown of Los Angeles and that will be even more difficult to purchase.
It’s an outstanding car but the exhaust is neutered due to the particulate filters. Best exhaust for this if you have to keep the OPFs in place is the Fabspeed balance pipe.
I bet 👍
Would you buy one if Porsche allowed you? If I could and had the cash... you certainly convinced me! Great video and can"t wait to see the rest of the nc500 footage. Cheers!
I’d be very tempted 👌
PP, you def can go in to Porsche and get one...I had no history and they managed to get me an allocation...should be coming end of year
Well done PP love ❤️ the car 🇦🇺👏👏👏🥂
What a superb review. Thank you Pete. As Ive mentioned before, for me a GT4 will hopefully be next, after my current Cayman S. I will be looking for a used 981/718 so the new thing wont be a problem. The 718 may be worth the stretch I think. Oddly, my only gripe with mine is the lack of storage for water etc. I still get tempted with the switch to a 911, but think the cayman is probably the more fun car, especially in GT4 guise.
Glad I’m not the only one 👍
Just got to love a Porsche, a pure drivers car, and those roads. Wow!
Did that road back in the summer in the GP, and it was fantastic!
Is there any road in the UK that you and Dynamo haven’t been down 😯😜😂
@@PetrolPed NC500? Well not yet anyway. 😂
great video!
As a potential 718 Spyder buyer I can fully echo Peds comments re the frustration of GT model allocations going to the same repeat buyers who are then able to flip the car back to the dealer after a year or two with minimal mileage and get their money back in full (ie have the car on free loan). I was “forced” to buy a GTS instead, which is cheaper and still a great car but will depreciate more. In summary, the regular guy/gal enthusiast like myself subsidises the uber-wealthy who get the superior car for free!
Vented seats is the only addition I would need to add.
That's a same that you can get a new GT4 in the UK. I'm in Canada, and I've never owned one before, but I was able to get an allocation. Good luck to you
There’s plenty in the used market to choose from, so not getting the allocation isn’t that big a deal
I walked into a Porsche showroom, 1st time customer and the GT4 will here in about 8 weeks. Don’t believe the hype.
Quality video pete. I love the porsche
👍
You CAN buy one, call all the dealers around you till you get an allocation :) Thats what I had to do... took me almost 2 years but dammit I love the car now that its in my posession!
+1.. Intention vs method.. Copy that..
Great video Pete. Manual for me every time. Shame about the weather but still looks like you had a lot of fun... Cheers
We had a couple of dry days. Epic videos coming soon. We had an FPV drone with us 😜👏👏
Great trip Ped love the car but I feel it was a little small for me as I am a big lad
It so good car for it price. And really good fun track car
👍
It reminded me of the Ford Fiesta in the preview picture. Lol :)
My own personal experience as someone who has ordered a GT4 and never owned a Porsche before was quite straightforward. I've ordered and I'm waiting for it. As I understand it, the GT4 is not an exclusive model and 'good dealers' are taking orders from newbies. However they only build so many per year so you have to wait, I think the long lead times is conflating the 'buying a GT conundrum' So if you go to a 'good dealer' they should sell you the car, you just may have to wait for it as they only get so many allocated per year. In various interviews Porsche GT boss has gone on the record and said they are wanting to get more vehicles out to more people, the current production crisis is not helping this aim though. I think however the RS models will always been reserved for the invited customers.
Thanks for this. Really interesting 👍
Love ❤️ Porsche’s!! Pete has not seen the last of this one! I’m sure could buy it off Porsche GB press fleet ? I think it’s epic and the spec is all you need. It seems so weird to have no electronics on the steering wheel. I love the look of it, old school looking👍🏻 Porsche GB 🇬🇧 rocks and please let Ped try the GTS ? 🍻🇨🇦
Don’t tempt me 😂
Great video Pete, felt as though I was in the car with you driving the car along those sublime driving roads in Scotland. Vocabulary like “delicious gear change, munching continents all adds to enhance your perceived sensory experience of driving the car. Guy in front in the McLaren seemed to be a bit nervy on the brakes, what tyres was he on ? 👍🏴😎
I thought it was the A93 but not sure, many great roads up here, maybe B797
I got my 981 version down to 10mpg on track!
Oh wow 😮 😂
@@PetrolPed i've gotten my 981 boxster S down to 10mpg on the track as well!
Think the Boxter GTS would be the best option for you, and starts at 67k. Think a bit of "wind in the hair" driving would more than make up for the added focus of the GT4. 👍
You are probably right 😜
I am excitedly awaiting my GR spyder, if the date ever stops shifting right.
My real question is how should this compare if you were in a Manual Zupra for half the money. Would it half the fun.
I missed it, darn it. Jax FL.
Apparently the policy to not sell you a GT car is not Porsche GB thing. It is the dealerships that dictate this.
Bruce Wayne's daily when the Batmobile isn't stealth enough.
Pick up a nearly new, second hand one. Great car!
👍
I have always thought the Cayman was a very Pretty Car with Beautiful lines... Talking of which... Jodie Kidd.. Yes THAT Jodie Kidd has a great Car channel.. "Kidd in a Sweet Shop" worth a look...This week doing a trip round Mclaren`s HQ.... :-))
It would be single figures on track. My tuned MK7 Fiesta ST180 does 12 mpg on track.
Nice 👍
Pete. Given the quality of the engineering and capability of those cars i am sure a white motorhome would not present a problem to progress.
😂😂😂
😂😂😂
Manual for a blast, PDK for everything else. I have just watched the video in which Tim has sold his GT4
Didn’t see that coming 😳
+1 for manual. For me, just missing the 918 lightweight bucket seats. Great review and I hope you find one to make yours. I won't be selling mine, that's for sure!
Fab review I hope you left the pp stickers on👍😂🧽🧽🧽
I thought I’d best take them off 😜😂
Bit weird 718 likes on this video as I am watching it!
Cool 😎
A final drive ratio swap would be the perfect mod for this car.
I believe Shark Werks do one 👍
@@PetrolPed +1.. Copy that.. SharkWerks..
Love my MY21 GT4 manual, unless I miraculously land a GT4RS allocation It’s a keeper. Had numerous Porsche’s and this is by far the best .
I daily a 981s and the PDK box makes a lot of sense on the school runs and interesting route home. However, my GT4 would most likely be a manual. I think we could all tell how badly you want one. There are a few instances where folks with no previous Porsche buying history have been given an allocation. You could just try ringing around…
It could play the
‘Do you know who I am ?’ card 😂😂😂😂
@@PetrolPed superglue yourself to the Porsche GB headquarters entrance 👍 I wouldn’t get a 2nd hand one, they’re going for overs these days. You’re welcome to try my 981s to see if you really want a GT4 or a 718 variant.
Great video and a great car, although not perfect but close, the Exige just pips it IMHO as you have to concentrate more and get into its groove whereas the porsche does a lot for you. I hope porsche UK don't charge you excess mileage 🤣 👍🏻
First!! Evening all! Happy Monday! Hope everyone has a nice week.
Hi 👋
So ridiculous the way they only sell GT cars to “special customers” in the UK. I just bought a Spyder as my first new Porsche in Australia, no problem….
It's not true, anyone can buy a GT car. They make loads
@@radeon08 +1.. True That.. Colorado
Little Tiger 😁😎🐯
I was under the impression that GT4’s have been fairly ‘easy’ to come by. Not at launch but certainly mid way through 2021 there were dealers offering slots without you need to be a special customer.
I’ve certainly heard some stories to back that up since making this video 👍
After your comment i'm wondering how many would tick the box for the wing purely for looks before function or even care about it's function.
Let’s face it, any wing on a car is pretty pointless on the road. They only starts working at track speeds 👍
Am I in the group of first watchers??
👍🏻
Yep 👍
I think for a daily, the Cayman GTS 4.0 is the pick of the bunch, no silly spoiler....
Love the spoiler 😜😂
@@PetrolPed tart!
Always loved the 911 but now I’m preferring the Cayman. It’s more of what the original 911’s were.
+1.. Copy That.. The 911 cars have become big GT cars.. Not so much with the mid-engine Cayman chassis..
Being that you have driven this, how much joy do you still derive from your personal car the boxster gts 4.0 comparatively? Is enough time and distance driven in your car make you wish for more like this GT4 or are you truly happy with the value you get from the boxster gts 4.0? Maybe that could be a video on it's own?
Mine is a 2.5 GTS and it delivers on all levels. I’ve done a drive tour in it too and loved it. Don’t get me wrong I’d love a GT4 or Spyder but they are another £30k 😬
2500 miles in 5 days. Man does ped get around to create youtube content. People see this 10 minute video and think it took 10 minutes of work to make. RUclips life is not a real job. Err no took 2500 miles of driving in 5 days to make this 10 minute video.
Mrs P. would look good in that too, black Porsches need to be dirty, leave the polishing to the others brands.
Shocking news! Shmee150 has sold his. Some say he is after the RS variant rumoured for release next year!
I’m not a fan off Shmee
As he’s had everything..
Uses them briefly tell you it’s the best car he’s ever had then flips it..
As a huge Porsche fan..
I couldn’t even get on a waiting list !!!!
Yet I would keep it for at least 4-5 years..
@@Only-one-life-68
I’m annoyed about this one too! But he has 3 Mercedes & his original Aston Martin that he has said he will “never sell”.
Yep. I’d bet the farm on it 👍
Love the petrol ped stickers on the rear wing - your placement or Porsche uk?
Oh mine 😜👍
@@PetrolPed I liked the idea that Porsche uk were subscribers to the channel and had bought some stickers to put on the car in readiness for you!
I know the road sign says Dumfries and Galloway but for the first part of the trip I was sure you were driving from Portree to Dunvegan on the Isle of Skye. Am I the only viewer on this forum that has never driven anything but a traditional manual gearbox car or never had to use sat-nav?
Manual only for me, but I do use a satnav now and again.
Gotta use Waze. It’s a Licence saver 😜👍
You mention the low splitter, but did it cause any issue on the NC 500 roads?
No. It was fine. Only had a couple of scrapes but nothing major 👍
