Great job Ben! Damn nice presentation. Thank-you for not chatting about gear ratios, and instead hitting upon how easy it can be to drive, and how fast it is if you know what your doing. Really enjoyed the 5 points/reasons to own. Favorite GT4 video. And I've watched them all. So good I had to come back after 4 months to watch again.
And whats your conclusion @mantapartners....I have a 981 cayman ona 15 playe 2015 plate here in England....im seriously considering a 718 gts...don't know whether to stretch to a gt4
The gripe about gearing has never been about performance. It's about being able to shift more often (bc it's fun to do) and also stay higher in rev (bc it's a beautiful sound). With taller gearing, you have to pick one but you can't have both. That said, it's not nearly enough to keep me from hopefully getting a Spyder.
@@redcarrot1148 Get that Spyder. I do a lot of tracking and backroad runs with the GT4 I own. Gearing never been an issue and just something for those who don't have to gripe about.
I own a 718 Spyder and I’m glad the car is ‘old tech’. I don’t like nor want the digital displays and no button (haptic) style interiors. I also love that it’s smaller than the 992, which is in my opinion too big now. It not being a 911 is just a thing said for bragging rights I think. I own a highly modified (997) 911 as well and the 718 Spyder/GT4 is still a great car.
Spot on, IMO. It's winter here in Wisconsin in the USA and my new-to-me 718 GT4 that I just purchased in October is stored for winter hibernation, so I found this video looking for more GT4 content. Really truly, great cars. I managed to get about 1500 miles on mine before storage this year and with the manual gearbox I love it. I sold my E39 M5 Dinan S2 package and my E46 M3 after buying this car and both of those cars were gems - I do not regret selling either of them. Kept my E92 M3 for a summer daily, so the GT4 is still going to be a weekend/track car, however, I fully agree that it's livable on the street. This car has the best manual gearbox I've ever used in 25 years of driving manual transmissions. Everything about driving this thing is wonderful. Due to the long gearing I find myself in 1 lower gear than i would in most other cars - I very often downshift from 3rd to 2nd and I love it. The car is so pure. Buy one now before it's too late
This is an amazing car but I went with the GTS 4.0 because it was easier to obtain and in my opinion, it is better for the street since I will never track my car. I get the same engine, manual gearbox, great suspension and many of the other goodies in a car that is 85 % of what a GT4 is. Great video!
A turbo is better for everyday usage, especially when you got tired after work, that high rev engine could be then a bit annoying. But I would be tempted to put a wing on that GTS ;)
@@0Turbox It's entirely preference, but the idea that you'd need to rev out a GTS 4.0 model to get home from work is pretty funny. You still have access to 80% of your peak torque at 2000 RPM, and 90% at 3000. Very, very silly comment.
@@0Turbox Same engine and rev range in both the GT4 and GTS 4.0 and both are n/a, so my point remains exactly the same. The idea that a GT4 or GTS 4.0 could be annoying because you'd need to reach higher revs during daily driving is very, very silly.

Excellent review. Porsche GT division cars and some GTS cars are a sight, sound and feel experience. You know you're alive when you drive one. The 718 GTS 4L and 718 GT4 easily punch the 911 Carreras ticket, these in 992 guise have become large 'feeling' and the interiors could be from any other german manufacturer. For me the biggest problem with the Cayman GT4 is the Boxster Spyder. I am generally the coupe over convertible type, but the Spyder is definitely the prettier car and being able to open the roof up and get that sound more directly to my ears would tip me over the edge. Especially given that by all accounts nothing it lost in terms of perceived rigidity or weight between the two.
I can confirm this as I had a 2020 GT4 and now a 2022 Spyder. I was hesitant as I am a stickler for any chassis flex, compromised handling, squeaks/rattles. Because of this I went with the GT4 initially but then after test driving a friends Spyder was surprised that it was virtually identical to the GT4, Now having had it for over a year I can confirm there is virtually no performance loss whatsoever and the car is actually significantly more fun and raw feeling as a result of not having a roof
I'm a very lucky man financially and have tracked and raced Caymans and Boxsters and owned 10 different Porsches but currently own both a 2024 BGTS 4.0 and a 2021 GT4. First off even though the GT4 is hard topped it is WAY louder than the BGTS. Next the BGTS has the option to drive around topless which is fabulous. My GT4 has the LWBS, a roll bar and a harness. That would NOT be comfortable on a long drive. My BGTS has 18 ways with heated and ventilated seats. They are fabulous, but there is no way to get a harness with those seats which is nice to have if you're planning on tracking your Porsche. I do track the BGTS as well, but only drive 8/10s when I do so. I drive my GT4 at 10/10ths since it has a roll bar and a harness which combines with a HANS device as well. A fantastic car in every way but Porsche's maintance and services costs are frankly breathtaking. Financing a car is one thing but financing for a full service 😮
The GTS is lighter and faster in a straight line, and only tenths off the GT4 around a racetrack at a fraction of the price. GTS also comes with way more creature comforts, no sacrificing luxury. GTS 4.0 is far better value.
I have a 981 GT4 and the front spoiler hitting anything and everything is a major problem. I cannot drive it to France because every French town and village has monster speed humps too high to drive over.
@@timbo8917 It’s all about the angle of approach regardless of whether it’s at multi storey car parks or just road junctions. Even dips in the road have scraped the front. You'd have to buy one or two of their cheaper cars to have a chance at this point... which sucks now as the prices are a lot higher and they're still charging ADM on sports cars
@@joe718gt4 You’re absolutely right, but I get the impression it’s a bit more than 1 or 2… They can sell the cars who they want to of course, and if they have lots of customers buying cars every 6 months then obviously it’s in their interest to keep those customers happy.

Very nicely put together, but i cannot believe you missed out the gear ratios, as one of the arguments that go against....this is what i hear about the most and it would have been nice to either dispel the myth or, confirm that this is, indeed, a problem on the road, especially as you had it for so long!
As an owner of a 718 GT4 manual I find the “complaints” about gearing rather funny 😂 it really isn’t an issue at all in all driving scenarios. I feel it’s just a hangover from car magazines moaning about it and it’s just Chinese whispers.
@@bootneck401664 Its good to hear from an owners perspective. As for the other reply about “never being able to hit the redline”. Sorry but you're very bias. The Atom and Caterham are raw and not comparable to the GT4, both in usability u mention but also thrill. The GTS 4.0 is 95% of the GT4, its essentially the touring version, the GT4 has the aero for the edge on track. It's a great car but this is a one way bias hype vid. The emira is a wait and see, no 5k mile reviews and it's a base model. The gts is the pick. The gt4rs is the dream. The 981 for the engine and experience. @@Jay-xr3sb tbf I don’t agree, I see many gt4 on track, for example I’ve just been to the Nurburgring in mine and the car park was full of GT3 and GT4’s….see plenty on uk track days too. Not knocking the gts btw, it’s a great car and maybe slightly better for the majority of people on the road as it’s a little softer edged.
I drove one at the Porsche track in Carson California, and was disappointed with the lack of acceleration and the horrible sound coming out of the exhaust system. I bought a C8 Corvette which is a far superior car. I had to wait sixteen months to get it. There is no wait for a Cayman GT4. If you are considering a GT4 go drive one on a track first.
When you're comparing car prices from 2015 with prices now you have to do the inflation adjustment. 75,000 back then were about 15% more worth than 75,000 now - so the car really lost some significant value. And I missed some clear words about the absurd long gearing in the Caymans.
True. But 75k in the bank for 7 years wouldn't have prevented that loss. 15% of 75k is a small price for 7 years of driving fun. That's some man-logic for you. Never heard about the long gearing before
If you don’t have an inferiority comolex, status anxiety or you can’t afford it…….those are all reasons to not buy. Otherwise it’s a cracking car. As for the ratios you can sort that with a crown wheel and pinion upgrade. Shortens the gearing by 14% so think 72mph on the limiter in 2nd. Same as a 997.2 RS
@@khoimavlogs5161 On the one hand, that's silly. On the other, people have to learn somehow. Anyway, GT4 has a lovely manual transmission, huge pity to miss out on that and just press buttons.
Both are great, manual and pdk. The pdk is fantastic and had its benefits. It’s faster on road and track, has a tiny bit more torque and can be launched repeatedly with no issues. It also has slightly shorter gear ratios and is great fun to go up and down the gears (albeit sometimes pointlessly 😂) I timed mine at 3.4 0-60 recently which is impressive too. A recent Nurburgring trip was delight, long boring 14hrs drive the pdk in auto at points was pleasant, but then on the track being able to short shift etc around certain bends was a real help.
I just traded my 2022 GT4 to a P dealer for his first allocation for the new 911 T. Why? Just too small inside for a guy 6’2” tall and 250 lbs. and the car is way too loud on the road - needs earplugs- and too rough on the road and as he says missing all the nice stuff that is standard in a modern car. Not a car for the road - just isn’t. And it is a track car but mine had a msrp of $135,500 - plus sales tax and registration still to pay. Are you really going to get that gorgeous paint job messed up on a track with rocks literally stuck on the tires of other cars that go off track getting thrown up at your car? And rocks being thrown out of the gummy cup 2 tires onto your paint as well? No. Too expensive and too pretty to make her do the dishes or vacuum - there are girls for the track and they are not that pretty and they can take a beating and have foul mouths but they are not the same girl you take home to Mom. The other guys will drool and they will try to imagine what it must be like on the road and in a negligee. It is for status with the other guys - period. And then you trade her in on a 911 with a manual transmission and for the cooking and making babies model. I did both.

Easily the worst review (with a title that has got nothing to do with the "talk") I have ever watched from your end. The GT4 (rawer and better in its 981 shape and easier to mod) is a car which extremely strong wherever you look (it is not just the balance: it is basically everything and that includes the gear ratios on the manual boxes): I would say more: as whole proposition it is the best car anyone could buy on this planet with whatever the money and that is its achievement: it is not the most expensive, it is not the fastest, it is not the one that brakes hardest, it is not the one which is the most spacious...bla bla bla... but for all it is it is the best. ps for the millions out there who can't think outside the box then please do us a favour: stick with your 911s and leave the GT4s for the rest of us. Fiver reasons not to buy one: 1. stupidly overpriced 2. dealer price gouging 3. good luck in finding one 4. its a Cayman at the end of the day 5. Again is stupidly overpriced
Mr Mattos - I struggle to see how a GT4 is over priced considering it’s faster around a track than many cars that cost considerably more. Good luck finding one? You obviously haven’t tried very hard. Price gouging? I think you don’t really understand the basic economic theory of supply and demand

Exactly, the reviewer is bias. How does the gt4 have the same thrill as a caterham or atom
Drive one and you’ll find out 😉
Yes but you don't get that body kit!
Dreaming
I have a 981 GT4 and it’s epic.
Is it a daily driver ?
@@miscool no, it’s used for track days and the occasional run.
One of my favorite Porsche
I have a 981 GT4 and the front spoiler hitting anything and everything is a major problem. I cannot drive it to France because every French town and village has monster speed humps too high to drive over.
This is the one thing that puts me off a GT4 as I've heard a number of times. I guess multi storey car parks are a big no then?
@@timbo8917 It’s all about the angle of approach regardless of whether it’s at multi storey car parks or just road junctions. Even dips in the road have scraped the front. I know many would say the rubber bib can be easily changed but I worry that at some point it gets pulled off by the impact and damages the bodywork at the mounting points. It is otherwise a WONDERFUL car!
Hello,
for that reason I would choose the GTS4.0 ..
but in fact I want a GT4
cannot make a decision
Can you advise pls ?
Rgs
@@cayman9815 if you intend to use the car regularly then I think the GTS would be the only option. The GT4 is a wonderful car for driving in areas you know and for track days but if you cannot pre-plan a route then you have to be prepared for issues. I remember getting stuck going into a National Trust property with a line of cars waiting behind me leaving me no choice but to crunch the spoiler. That brought home the practical limitations of the car.
@@gregheah7385
thx
the GTS/GT4 will be my only & daily car, as is today my 981C
so I got yr message
thx
The 981 GT4 is even better. More visceral, better clutch feel, way better sound. Get one while you can! And to dispel the myth, the gear ratios are not a problem. Just get one!
I disagree, the new engine is much better imo.
@@muthukumaranc dull sound but nice power. 981 feels more special generally as a performance car, more of an event. Will always be the original. Some very rare spec cars out there if that's ya thing
@@glennpearson1888 Hey, It is all personal preference at the end of the day... To me, the newer engine is better because it has top-end fizz and feels more like a Porsche GT product should feel.
So you have one to sell
And the 981 doesn’t have a plastic oil pan.
I’d love one. But Porsche won’t sell me one. And I might be going against the PCP bubble of buying cars and flipping them every 6 months. Instead, a car purchase is a long considered occasional (every 4 years on average) purchase… so I will never build up the credit, and never be a customer… sadly!
You can buy an used car
You'd have to buy one or two of their cheaper cars to have a chance at this point... which sucks now as the prices are a lot higher and they're still charging ADM on sports cars
@@joe718gt4 You’re absolutely right, but I get the impression it’s a bit more than 1 or 2… They can sell the cars who they want to of course, and if they have lots of customers buying cars every 6 months then obviously it’s in their interest to keep those customers happy.
@Ansmo87 I know this is from a year ago but exactly the reason I bought mine then and there. Had basically all the options I really wanted in a discontinued color with almost no ADM. Didn't want to play the waiting games
But what about the fact that it’s all done in the first two gears after that, your just rowing the gear stick.
One HUGE reason I can't. It's too expensive.
I’m in a 4.0 GTS and have been trying to get a build slot, would love to know where I can get one in 18 months even.
981 seems far superior on sound. May save to get one
I saw this particular car in the Starbucks carpark in Orton, Peterborough.
Probably Ben going for a cheeky latte.
I assumed it was a press car, not many Porsches kicking around in the Orton Goldhay ghetto
No point, can't buy a new one......not enough Porsche Dealer Principle points.
The real question is..... Manual or PDK?
Guards red. Black wheels. It needs a Manual transmission. As God intended. Done.
Lifeless feeling steering? High gearing? Feel of really driving the car to its limits?
in love with this car, but manual 😅
Is there a waiting period for the normal 718 2litre base version
Yes, Porsche has trouble keeping up with sports car demand. My dealer said somebody had to wait a year for a base 718 Boxster with almost no options
Any available at msrp? 🤔
The manual is better
I can think of one reason to not get one... I don't have nearly enough money to purchase one.
@@bootneck401664 but you can't reach often the redline on the road, it's a real shame is it
@@VarioFelce but you don’t need to ring it out to redline, you can if you want too but you really don’t need to when on a B road Hoon
@@bootneck401664 Its good to hear from an owners perspective. As for the other reply about “never being able to hit the redline”.
Are you seriously telling me that you observe the speed limit at all times?!
There is no performance car owner who does not speed on the road, or what is the point?
There is a time and a place for it, granted, but if anyone tells you they don’t they are lying.
@@kristofevo each to there own with how they drive there car on whatever road it may be, I enjoy driving my GT4 immensely regardless of aiming for 8k RPM or not granted that by doing so on public roads you will be in excess of the SL however you really don’t need to ring it out to enjoy its capabilities. 👍🏻
Because you’re rich and have a lot of money “invested” in Rolex and Porsche waiting lists but you’re still not on first name terms with the dealer?
Sorry but you're very bias.
The Atom and Caterham are raw and not comparable to the GT4, both in usability u mention but also thrill.
The GTS 4.0 is 95% of the GT4, its essentially the touring version, the GT4 has the aero for the edge on track.
It's a great car but this is a one way bias hype vid. The emira is a wait and see, no 5k mile reviews and it's a base model.
The gts is the pick. The gt4rs is the dream. The 981 for the engine and experience.
Or just get a daily alfa quad and a weekend caterham
Very biased comment.
The GTS isn’t anywhere near 95% of a gt4.
Great car no doubt but you are dreaming there
@@stelongy1 it is on the road, which is where the gt4 will likely be found. Check autotrader, gt4's are mostly garage queens
With a manual , yes .
Then you have the GT4RS which makes the 992GT3 just plain boring…
I had one. It’s far too extreme and down right uncomfortable on the road. GT4 much better all rounder if you can look past the marketing

Sixth reason if you like big bills out of warranty. Crack on
"Five reasons you should buy one" ....
One reason you can't buy one = Money.
Lol if you can afford a GT4, you can afford a cheaper daily driver like a Camry
When you're comparing car prices from 2015 with prices now you have to do the inflation adjustment. 75,000 back then were about 15% more worth than 75,000 now - so the car really lost some significant value. And I missed some clear words about the absurd long gearing in the Caymans.
True. But 75k in the bank for 7 years wouldn't have prevented that loss. 15% of 75k is a small price for 7 years of driving fun. That's some man-logic for you. Never heard about the long gearing before
@@718YellowSubmarine Would be great if 7 years of driving fun would cost just 11.25 k. 😄
Why the hec would Porsche go full electric with this car. No one wants that. From what I hear they are struggling selling the Taycan. Is that true?
718 Spyder offers more for less
Great car but I agree it's kind of a waste on the street unless you live on a mountain road
My name is sam oates bideford and demi my dog
If you don’t have an inferiority comolex, status anxiety or you can’t afford it…….those are all reasons to not buy.
Otherwise it’s a cracking car.
As for the ratios you can sort that with a crown wheel and pinion upgrade. Shortens the gearing by 14% so think 72mph on the limiter in 2nd. Same as a 997.2 RS

What a pity it's PDK.
It can be opted with a manual
@@abayamangali No shit. That's why it's a pity!
Most people keep saying pity pdk lol most of them can't even heel and toe probably but they want manual lol
It also has slightly shorter gear ratios and is great fun to go up and down the gears (albeit sometimes pointlessly 😂)
I timed mine at 3.4 0-60 recently which is impressive too.
I Mean car. - this GT4 has one primary use- drive it to your PCA regions cars and coffee and make your friends jealous like when you brought that stripper to your brother’s wedding as your date. The other guys will drool and they will try to imagine what it must be like on the road and in a negligee. It is for status with the other guys - period. And then you trade her in on a 911 with a manual transmission and for the cooking and making babies model. I did both.
Here we go again..."comfort" (something completely subjective) talked about on (another) review of one of the most complete sport cars there ever been. It sucks 🤮! No wonder the version on show has been specced with a pdk 🤢 A review based on useless points - what about this for a statement: "It is not a 911" [sic] I am sorry CAR Magazine but you have lost the plot. Thank you

Do not buy the manual! Terribly lame gear ratios.
Fiver reasons not to buy one:
1. stupidly overpriced
2. dealer price gouging
3. good luck in finding one
4. its a Cayman at the end of the day
PDK transmission = Fail
