Did I make a mistake? Comparing the Porsche 911 and 718 Cayman GT4 - OWNERSHIP review 4k ft MrHCars

  • A month or so ago I took delivery of my Porsche 911 (992) Carrera S. Having looked at various options including the BMW M3, Audi RS6, Toyota GR Yaris AND MANY MORE - I decided it WAS going to be a Porsche that replaced my BMW M2 Competition...
    I whittled it down to the Cayman GT4 / GTS or the 992 911. Obviously I decided that the 911 was the best choice for me.
    At the same time, little did I know that friend to the channel ‪@MrHCars‬ was also contemplating a change from his BMW M2 Competition.
    Will recently took collection of his Cayman GT4 some time ago now. I have been watching his ownership with interest and more recently was fortunate enough to meet with will and film our ownership thoughts.
    Join us as we both drive the alternatives car and give you our thoughts.
    Obviously we both voted with our feet - but which would you choose???
    porsche 911 (992) carrera s or porsche cayman 718 gt4???

    Great video guys. It was really interesting to hear from an owners perspective. A couple of months ago a decided to swap my 981 GT4 for something more useable. I tried a few 911s across 3 generations, and as amazing as the 992 is, I went with a manual 997 Turbo. I think it offers the usability and some of the refinement but still has that old school feel and of course, a manual gearbox. Ok the stereo is junk by modern standards, but there are solutions for that. What I really liked about the 997 generation is the compact size. The 991/2 just felt quite large to me. What I can say is that there isn't really a bad decision here. All these cars have their pros/cons and anyone fortunate enough to have the means to buy a Porsche can certainly find one that suits their needs.

    I've owned 5 911's included 993's, 997's, Turbo S etc. I now proudly have a 718 GTS 4.0 Boxster which I believe is the best sports road car Porsche currently make and a better looking cabriolet as it was designed to be one. It captures more of what original 911's were about...raw, visceral, exciting & petit...if not quite the steering feel. 991.1 onwards became a 'jack of all trades GT' to attract buyers from fast BMW's, Audi's etc or track versions, with either being too big & fast to exploit on UK roads. Snap one up while you can, they will soon be gone.

    Enjoyed the video so much. Both are just great cars. Love that you didn't comment about the GT4 long gearing, so tired of hearing it. Instead, you go out and properly shift the GT4, and it sounded so good. To me, seems very close to the 997.1 GT3 gearing ratios. My 718 Spyder is arriving in a few weeks and one thing this video did is convince me that I need to get the remote valve controller, because I have no plans to replace the factory exhaust system.

    I had the same dilemma before I purchased my 991.2 Carrera T. I really wanted a GT4 but it was too low for my driveway and I feel like it was a weekend only car - whereas the 911 is a dailyable car. I ended up selling the 911 for a bundle and have a Taycan now so I went the complete opposite direction, but someday I want to add an air cooled or a Metzger 911 (turbo or GT3) to the garage. I miss having a 911.

    It was great watching this video, but the 992 reveals its soul on twisties, not just when putting the pedal to the metal on straight roads. I nevertheless agree a Cayman is a more fun car to drive, being smaller and with it’s midship flat-6. Especially with this wonderful normally aspirated 4.0 litre engine. You get the feeling it pivots through corners rather than turns, but then so does a 992 2 (and 4) CS with rear axle stearing ! Awsome cars, both of them.

As someone who has a 992 GTS (manual) incoming (GT silver btw 😉) and also owns a 718 GTS 4.0 (manual) I found this comparison very insightful. I got my silver S three weeks ago. I think it’s amazing. However it’s not what I was expecting. It’s lighter than my previous car but I didn’t feel about that, the car is very low and gives back a lot of road feedback - which also gave a clear feeling on how heavy a car truly is. It feels heavy.
    I also can’t tell what’s different about the rear engine setup yet, at least not on the public road - maybe because my previous car has a 50-50 distribution?
    As for cornering, it’s awesome.
    But at the same time, it’s serious, it’s expensive, it makes all the driving less enjoyable - unlike the way I can mess around in a Type R, golf R, which feels agile, light, cheap to maintain and I can push to their limit worry free.
    Anyways I need some time to get used to this awesome car, don’t get me wrong, I enjoy every minute with it and I want to drive it every second.

A track car for the road, it was my ‘weekend’ toy. The sound of it’s naturally aspirated engine - sublime. I sold it in April 2021 and put a deposit on a ‘base’ 992 Carrera in GT silver. 😀😀😀 I wanted something more ‘Road orientated’ and I haven’t owned a 911 before. From the day the Boxster was introduced to the world, and the iterations that came from it, this form has always knocked the 911 out of consideration for me. It has the perfect proportions, curves, allure and sex appeal which IMHO the Carrera can not achieve. My GT4, in Guards Red and gleaming, now meets me every morning in my garage, and it’s beauty still embraces me. Does it need to be the fastest or have the longest d!@k? Nope. It knows it’s value, and it’s quiet self confidence is evident.

The C4S eliminates the front bobbing that you get on older 991’s which is why I choose it in my older 991.1 and especially if you come from front engined cars or AWD Audi RS cars. But the 992 has all but eliminated that in this current generation. But its an idea for a future video. I still went with a C4S in the 992 as that had the options I was looking for at the time and I think they still make a driver focused car, just more sure footed in wet slippery conditions. Be interested to see / feel the difference between car with/without rear steer as hear differing opinions- useful in town driving / parking but is it noticeable on twisties and if so does it feel artificial. On the 991.2 it was a must have option but on the 992 with the improved steering rack speed and footprint is it required? I presume you also have the Lithium battery as a consequence of that option? - yet another topic for a future video The Goodyears are very decent road tyres and I rate them highly but start to show their weakness on a track day as similar to the Pirelli they heat up fast but can overheat compared to the Michelin P4S tyres. I switched mine out within a month as I went on a European road trip but made the most of them at Goodwood ! If u want to do a 4S vs 2S (both which have the sport design kit) - comparison let me know. All the best Jungle.

      Cheers for the view and thoughts chappy. Interesting in the rear wheel steer. I think there car is v good without it and based on my limited time to compare them the rear wheel steer simply helps massively at lower speeds (reduces turning circle) and at high speeds helps to reduce steering input which a few people deem “less engaging”
      Arguably - rightly so 👍
      I like it though 👍

    Bought a gts 4.0 cayman and i am missing the extra RPM for sound. But i dod not want to have the spoiler :-/ Currently i would only buy a GT3 over a cayman. Would not buy a 992 turbo s over a cayman even!
    I wonder though if a boxster is as fun as a cayman. the space i sacrifice for removing the top was to high for me. But how compares the sound in the car and the driving feeling?

    • @CarMadDad
      @CarMadDad  2 года назад

      The sound of the GT4 is superior chap - longer Rev range and just more theatrics across the board. Driving feel is also different. The cayman feels far more on edge however the 911 feels the more capable of the two (although feels heavier in a corner)

    • @henningkurella2845
      @henningkurella2845 2 года назад +1

      @@CarMadDad not sure if we talk about the same.
      I agree that the cayman 4 liter motor is way more fun than any 911 992 motor except the 4 liter of the gt3.
      I bought the cayman gts 4,0 with a 7800/min cap and 20 horses less due to the chip. The gt4 goes to 8000/min and gets the last 20 ps on 7600+/min.
      The gt4 rs instead has a cap at 9000 just like the gt3. The additional horsepower comes from many extras an therefore the gt4 rs is much different on the engine than a gts4.0 or the gt4.
      But the gts4.0 and the gt4 are quite similar. The gt4 has its main differences on the exterior.

    • @MrHCars
      @MrHCars 2 года назад +1

      Boxster and Cayman are the exact same car, so you wouldn't notice any difference in handling. However, yes, the open top experience could make it more thrilling as you're able to hear the exhaust note a lot more + more wind noise etc.
      I've not been in a gts4.0 so cannot comment - but i imagine they're relatively the same engine wise. Only thing the gt4 would really differ is the handling.
      I've been in a 2.5L gts and the front end grip and overall suspension was a lot softer... which i imagine the 4Lgts is like.
      I'd like to think you're not missing much from the extra RPM - but again, i've not been in one myself 😕

      @@CarMadDad Hmm I just rewatched your video on my phone this morning, because I really wanted to hear that 911 part as well and sound was absolutely fine this time for the whole video.

      Anyway thanks for answer even on year old video, looks like you really care about your channel, will check other videos of yours for sure.
      What a beatiful spec you got there. I think having Sport Design front bumper is an absolute must on 992 otherwise they look bit weird with those huge plastic parts. I see you even got the front lip painted in body colour which is normally cheap plastic look like. Really details like these transform the car. If we don’t speak about PTS colours Gentian Blue and GT Silver are my absolute favourite, what a joy to see two GT Silvers next to each other. Keep up the good work and wish you all the best :)

    Wait until you take a turn at high speed in that 911, the back end is going to swing out on you. The GT4 will not do that, being a mid engine car. I have driven both on the track (Mosport, Ontario, Canada) and I own the 718. The 718 is more a high powered go cart you can take on the road, much more fun than the "cruising" 911.
