I find myself saying more and more that I prefer simple, honest reviews by people who know cars, than RUclipsrs telling me they've bought another fashion statement and wrapped it like a Quality Street.
Well I am certainly not subscribing to this channel. I literally had no idea he didn't like the gt4 until the very end wrap up.
Jack Greaves agreed. Terrible construct of the review.
@@jacebeleren429 look at it positively, values might not go to stupid and more of us get a chance to own one...
Alan Hunt If I could find an allocation for a gt4 I would trade in my M2 right away.
You may like my channel then
This reviewer, has gotten much better with time and much more comfortable with facing the camera. In a world of lying and shouting extroverts I really like a low profile, knowledgeable and honest reviewer. Keep up the good work and know it is appreciated...
Dan P. has reached a level of professionalism and competence that most of his peers may never attain.
Sutcliffe and pigs like clarkson and so on are those shouting extroverts your talking about. agreed man.
Yeah I rate Dan highly as a reviewer/presenter. He and Henry from Carfection are probably my favourites in terms of actual reviews.
Dan Prosser is up there with Catchpole and Metcalfe. Top Gear would do well to consider them and dumping the northern idiots
@@MrNacash It sounds like a nice compliment to this fine reviewer.
Won't lie I'm very surprised by this honest review. Just expected it to be mind-blowing like every other Porsche review.
Agreed. Cheers 🥂
Dan is such a great motor journalist. Just like Harris in the days of CHOC you give so much detail and honesty, so people who actually love cars and want to know everything down to the bore and stroke, actually get to learn those details. Piston Heads is really killing it right now, looking forward to the next one. Cheers guys
Edward Bell it’s possibly the worse review ever. 20mins of gushing review then suddenly backtracks on his POV. Waste of 20mins. Dreadful motoring journalism.
@@julian987r4 Have you been on Pistonheads site recently ? Utter shite. The forums are full of ' I just bought a Golf R and it is as fast as hell' posts and other detritus. This channel echoes it as subjective waffle is its forte.
Sorry, each to their own I guess. I thought it was pretty good, but I do see what you mean. It was a bit weird backpedaling like you mentioned. Tbh between this and things like carfection there doesn’t seem to be much else. Obvs Evo and Autocar but it’s much of the same.
Edward Bell true, and I do rate this channel and usually this journalist is great, but for this review it is very sub par. He must have been having a bad day as he is not on usual form
I think Dan has improved whilst Chris Harris has gone the other way, too over the top.
First reviewer I’ve seen show us how the roof works. Thanks
Thanks for your detailed review Dan! Much appreciated and honest like only a true road tester can be. Cheers👌
Couldn't put up with those gear ratios: you have to be speeding in the UK to drive it above 5,000 RPM, unless you stay in first gear!
@That Guy Scott Webb Too busy with my work for Auto Bild Sportscars and not sure what would be worth to review 🤔
@@julianevans9548 I was at the static launch of this car and asked Andreas Preuninger about the ratios. He said its because of emissions and the added torque would solve it. Not sure if thats true. Not having driven it myself yet, I think Dan has a point
@@TheGetawayer Interesting, thanks. I'll check out your channel.
@@TheGetawayer Miss your amazing videos Guido! I was wondering where you went as you seem to have got rid of your instagram?
GT4 - “30 kg is negligible”
GT2 RS - “Weissach pack will save you 20kg for only $31k”
30 kg is pretty much tbh. but yes that price seems pretty high for the Weissach pack 😅
It's all about resale value, friend.
@smedina : Weissach pack is for millionnaires and porsche marketing people knows it very well. It has become a luxury company. 30 kg in a 1400 kg, yes it is negligible. It is the difference between a driver in good shape and a porky driver full of fat in his belly.
Buy a litium battery and save the money.

My favourite car reviewer used to be Chris Harris. Now that he’s been Top Gearified I’ve found Dan and he is simply the best out there. Easy to listen to and straight forward reviews. Great work Dan!!
YEAH
AGREED
Owner of a 981 Cayman GT4, I know now that I would definitely keep it for a very long time again...
But adding a new Spyder would make a almost perfect 2 car garage 🤪
I have the 2.9 versions GT4
Usually prefer coupes but dang that Spyder looks gorgeous!
I have the first generation limited numbers 987 Spyder, and apart from the totally manual roof it is a delight. Much shorter gear ratios, hydraulic steering, raspy 3.4 DFI engine, great exhaust sound (with loud button). Whilst not as powerful as the 981 3.8 and 718 4.0 it holds its own and is easily the lightest car Porsche have built in the last 15 years.
Also these Porsche are similar spec to 987 Boxster Spyder
Cayman R
Cayman S Black Edition
Apart from the manual roof? Thank the drving gods for it. Made it much lighter than it otherwise it would be.
That car feels old just seeing it
@@aitorjara100 your point being?
Car manufacturers need to understand that there is one universal truth: give a motor journalist an amazing soundtrack and they’ll tell you that you’ve made an amazing car. Must feel like a savage beast beneath the hood. Always
LOL
Finally a review that gets the weight info right. As expected from you guys. Great work as always!
I think the Spyder looks Damn good with that top and the silver paint!! Never thought I would want a 718 spyder, but...
I love that particular Spyder spec... Silver with red interior and top. Perfect!
Superb again. 981 Spyder is pretty much my ideal fast road car, think based on looks and sound the new model hasn't changed that.
Excellent honest, objective review with negatives as well as the positives.
Great video. If you ever want to do a comparison 981 to 718 you are more than welcome to get in touch and borrow mine.
Yours is too fast!
I really appreciate honest reviews especially considering the sound aspect. While cars are definitely becoming more and more silent...most reviewers tend to ignore it and even go so far and pretending the sound is amazing!
Honestly this is some of the best proper car content available anywhere..
Keep it up👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Great review Dan. Nice to see a professional reviewing cars in 2019 👍
Great video! One of the top two presenters in my opinion. Henry Catchpole and Dan!! Please give us more sports car videos!
Great honest and thorough review Dan. Great work. Thanks.
This is the type of review I were looking for. It provided me with the last bit of information for my purchasing decision. Thank you!
I wish they offered a front axle lift. What an honest, useful review which is not always the case with some RUclipsrs. Cheers!
I was thinking about changing from my 981 GTS to the new Spyder....but after that review I am not 100 % sure anymore. Love the noise of my GTS soo much.
Depends on where you live. The US spec cars won't have the particulate filters, so they should sound a lot better than the one in this review.
Romeomustdie73 I love my GTS also, mine is 2.9 with automatic gearbox
I have the OG GT4 and the sound, feel, and 'Fizzz' (copyright James May) is amazing. My DD is FK8 CTR and it is probably easier to drive 'fast' on the road despite some turbo lag. Every journey in my GT4 is memorable and I do have some 'on the limit' experience in it despite no track time yet. It is an amazing chassis and I LOVE this machine. To tame the SOUND or the purpose of it would be a travesty. I have the RPM Technik final drive 14% final drive reduction and a so get the most from the glorious gearbox and 'noise'. I am very happy and will be keeping my gorgeous GT4 981 for ever. Or until I need some money back! The 718 is awesome too, but it seems not so purposeful. I will sort out some track time soon - it is the 'clubsport' version. I have driven some tracks with my own and my brother's E46M3s, and other cars on 'experience' days so I do have a (limited) understanding of high speed vehicle dynamics. Porsche make GREAT cars!!
What a review! Why can’t all content be this informative, considered and give us such a good insight into the intricacies of these special vehicles. Bravo to all involved and thanks to Dan 👍🏽
Yeah, of course... LOL, what a shitty review of a seemingly spoiled snobbish idiot Dan Prosser! His over-dramatic "gear ratios too long" bla bla bla... is kind of fake news shit! I just can't hear this shit from this guy, because these are "non existing problems" with these two cars!
The transmission and gearing ratios of these new 718 GT4 and Spyder models are absolutely perfect for the purpose of these cars! They are fitting perfectly for German roads...
Maybe it's the kind of British B-roads and his driving style, that Mr. Prosser comes to his fucking annoying verdict like "it doesn't come to life at 5000 rpm... bla bla bla"..., or like his statement that "he's really frustrated about the gear ratios"... WTF!
British cartesters sometimes are acting like really fucking annoying spoiled little kids... That's all! Brits are very often just "hating or loving" things... That's a kind of just fucking annoying "black or white" thinking, which is pissing me off! There is more than only "I love it or I hate it". There is many in between, I would say.
The 718 GT4 and 718 Spyder both have deserved more than only stupid black or whide verdicts from this asshole Dan Prosser. He is even too fucking stupid to realize, why the Spyder roof is the absolutely best roof solution for this car. Without having any electric motors or hydraulic parts it's just the lightest possible setup. And he is acting like a completely donkey while "operating" / closing the roof. Which in fact is the most simple thing in the world, because it's just "self- explanatory"...!
Greetings from Germany!
2 of the best cars currently on sale
Dan top review fella, you and Henry taking the crowns as the best auto journalists out there !! Big UP and also to Chris H and Steve S !
Finally, someone who actually giving Porsche criticism for the sound and infuriating gear ratios. And yes, even without the filter, this engine still doesn't have that more volumetric (as an adjective) depth to the sound.
People have been doing that for a long time! Evo, Carfection, Autocar (I think) and others have all complained about the gear ratios and basically everyone mentioned the noise when the 4 cylinder Boxster/Cayman came out...
@@Mockle07 no one crapped on this GT4 being pretty much still the 2013 Caymans chassis.
Sure 718 changed into new unique panels but the difference is marginal. This is pretty much still the 2013 cayman, with a bored up cost saving engine, but with proper (and expensive) GT suspension setups.
ZDY No, because it’s still the best handling in its class, that’s why no-one is crapping on it; he says how fantastic the chassis is about five times in this video! Besides, I was only correcting you based on your “sound and gearing” comment... because loads of people have mentioned those things in reviews for years.
Also, it’s not a “bored up, cost saving engine”! It’s a different engine entirely and certainly isn’t cost saving... what on earth makes you think that? The previous GT4 was just a modified 911 engine, so if anything THAT was a cost saving exercise.
@@Mockle07 - I always guessed that Porsche had a bunch of 3.8s laying around (maybe carerra s sales were lower than expected?) and figured out a way to use them up before moving on to the turbo 3s.
Thanks for a nice review. This is a first complaint on the sound of the new na4.0. couldn't wait to take delivery of my spyder and hear it out myself.
This review is great!
Can you imagine opening your garage and seeing both of these cars, and having the keys in your pocket?
What will you do?
A) rush to the closest car and haul ass for miles and miles without any care in the outside world
B) go back in the house and watch RUclips videos seeking validation for which is best before going out on the road
C) wash drive dry possibly wax park repeat assess the weather select your mid engine for the day and proceed to head up the mountain
D) install a recliner and kegerator in the garage and maintain intensely low miles because you’re never selling anyway and it’s so great to see
E) A and C

Brilliant review Dan, and hugely helpful. I’m in the market for one of these (ignoring the standard allocation nonsense) and it’s great to be informed by an expert. Great stuff.
Allocation stuff is abunch of BS this time... They will sell all that they can over 2-3 years...
@@nineeighttysevengruppellc7696 it isn't BS if you live in the UK. Dealers are only being given a handful of cars and these will go to preferred customers. If you think otherwise, I'm afraid you're mistaken. It doesn't matter how many they make.

Great review as always, understand the points made, but lots of nitpicking. Both gorgeous cars.
Dan-really appreciate how descriptive you are when it comes to how the chassis/suspension of both cars behave on road+track. Very underrated channel on YT when there are a lot of overrated car youtubers/vloggers/
'influencers' from UK + US that post clickbait titles in ALL CAPS and produce absolute crap (and or cringeworthy) content. I wish EVO Magazine's youtube channel still produced more video reviews like they use to too. About the GT4, hopefully companies like Sharkwerks will offer a 'shorter gear ratio' mod to rectify that issue. Would this new GT4 have a more rigid strut tower design because there are a few videos of owners 'cracking' them on trackdays...
The strut tower is the million $ question for me. Let me know what u find out on that one....
Thank you for a great review of both cars. Right to the point and honest. Much appreciated.
your channel has really raised its game - keep up the great work...........
Great video ! Good to see the 718 GT4 tested and a decent conclusion to it all. I think the 981 GT4 really hit the sweet spot even with it's high gear ratios.......you make a good point lots of little flaws are hard to ignore with the 718 but the 981 definitely had far fewer......
The annoying "gear ratio" complaints of this socalled "car journalist" just ruins the whole video! No other car journalists so far have been as much critical about the GT4 transmission and "gear ratios"like this guy. He is sitting on a really high horse..., and he's just a fucking annoying clown!
SJW Maniac Nah, I guess everybody expected Porsche to fix this long transmission with the new model and they didn‘t. Propably also bound to emission reduction like the sound killers they put in the 981. That‘s why people are disappointed. However, Porsche is one of the last manufacturer building cars like this, so Kudos
@@skyphab There's nothing which has to be "fixed" at the new 718 GT4 and Spyder, because these fantastic sports cars are already perfect! Dan Prosser is a fucking annoying idiot. Period!

One of the best reviews I’ve seen to date. 2 such iconic important cars just slid down my “need to bag” list down to “like to give it the beans in a borrowed one”. Thank you for giving me no reason to swap my Carrera T for the Spyder. I’ll just keep looking for a perfect spec 718Boxster GTS then.
The spyder is a beautiful sculpture, especially in this color configuration.
Great review Dan..I'm currently in a Boxter T and I'm sure there's DNA from the new GT4 and Spyder in mine, quite frankly I think they're epic in driver sharpness and overall experience! Porsche nailed it again with these examples!!
I have re discovered myself as a piston head with this car !!
Great and honest review. I think history will judge the original GT4, Spyder and 991.2 GT3 as the high point with the newer versions just a little too compromised either for emissions or to appeal to a wider and more profitable audience.
Shoulda kept 'em hydraulic steering.
Rick C 🤣
I think u got a point but eventually the new GT4 is the better long term track weapon. PM me and I will tell you why. But for resale value and history ur 💯 correct my friend. Cheers 🥂
Great review ....and very well analysed.....brings a satisfactory and very tangible conclusion almost as if I was driving the car myself 😎
I trust Dan's judgement, waiting to hear his thoughts on the c8 and maybe compare the gt4 with the c8 head to head like he did with the 992 vs R8
Finally, a great detailed review. Sound wise, I agree - it doesn't sound as guttural as the 981. Looking forward to a more in depth road test of the GT4 Dan!
With an aftermarket exhaust this should be really no problem at all..., because many 718 GT4 customers will have their own solutions for such little "issues", in the same way like they can "play" with the whole chassis.
These two 718 GT4 and Spyder versions are just amazing..., and that's all!
But watching this video with this so-called "car journalist" Prosser, it feels like the 718 GT4 and Spyder are the worst cars ever made. What an idiot!
Great review and very informative thank you. Happy with my 718 Cayman S, May not sound as good but the torque it has is ideally suited to day to day use
Alan Booth I got one of the last 718 gts without the fuel particle filter and i think it sounds good. It’s not loud but the amount of torque and the pdk makes it faster and more enjoyable as a daily drive
I am very happy I did not upgrade to the new model. For me the sound is absolutely crucial and the 981 Spyder (1st gen) sounds extraordinary good...which is also why I bought the Spyder 4 years ago and not the 981 GT4. I bought it mainly for doing road tripsin Europe. Sure I've done some trackdays on the Nürburgring while passing and after switched to the new Michelins it's good enough for my needs. But mostly I do Sunday trips on nice, curvy Swedish country roads. I will never sell this car!
Great review, thanks Dan! I was really hoping Porsche would give us a fully electric roof this time.
That's an excellent, thoughtful, honest review, Dan.
Like your honesty Dan. Great rounded review.
I really like your review. It’s full of details. However I think that long gear ratios will warm up our oldschool petrolheads hearts❤️
First off, thank you for your excellent review. I own a 2016 GT4 and plan on trading it in for the new Spyder as I miss my former 09 Boxster S. We shall see if I pull the trigger.
Very fair and thorough descriptions. Well done.

I like your honesty about using the throttle blips..
Great review - clear and honest. Spyder is a work of art! Kept up the great work
Great Review mate. I think i have so much time to enjoy a car review! Keep up the good work!
I have a 981 and Im super interested in one of these. I will wait for the PDK though and, ATM, prefer the Spyder.
Great review through and through. This channel is presenting stuff like no other channel is. These 2 models from Goodwood FOS were just stationary on other channels, you guys managed to get them on circuit and open road for the proper review. Well done to that! And only then we were able to get the right feeling of these cars being driven as well as the adequate conclusion! Keep the awesome stuff coming!
Stellar review explaining details and flaws. 11/10
Thank you for a great review. Being a 981 owner I selfishly can’t help feeling a bit smug about your conclusion. As for the built in factory understeer I can highly recommend the Manthey set up including the longer steering arms allowing for a 4 degree negative camber front setting, and also lowers the front end a bit. This makes the turn in razor sharp and hugely rewarding precision wise. Peter
And makes your tires junk 5x faster, but hey, you got better feel in corners to your local burger king! XD;
4 degrees is a lot
I didn’t expect that honest , and I like it
You guys are up there with Catchpole, Reid and the top car reviewers.
Insightful review, not perfect but close enough.
Think it is worth considering that they are doing extremely well giving us these, especially considering the hands, they and other manufacturers, are being dealt!
Really hope they make lots of them this time.
Yes. The more, the merrier. Especially GT4s
This reviewer is EXCELLENT
Gear ratios were a complaint of the last generation as well. That being said I'm glad these cars exist and I hope Porsche sells a bunch of them. Naturally aspirated engines and manual gearboxes are rare enough these days and I hope we get a few more years before they are gone for good.
The roof takes around 20 seconds when you get used to it, I wish people would stop making an issue out of it! Sounds like the previous 981 is the better car?
Great review, stunning cars. I’ll throw it out there, cars are becoming to fast for the road and watching this proves that. I have a gen 1 Boxster and down a well sighted road like that you’d be doing over 3 figures easily but at least you can ring out the first three gears doing it.
Or u can hit 3 figures inna Tesla 3 on one gear 🤣 😉
BRilliant and thorough review! Lets see a review of the GT4 PDK out on the streets.
Great honest review. One of the really honest ones that i saw in a while .
Incredibly useful, as I had my heart set on upgrading my current 'original' 2016 Cayman GT4 for the new model. The last thing I want is a car that sounds less good and that has less clutch and steering feel, not to mention no sat nav! Your review rather puts me in mind of when Audi launched the mark2 R8 in 2016 (I had a manual V8-engined mark 1). The mark 2 R8 was (and is) technically better than the mark 1 but with ever greater refinement lost its soul along the way.
Another great review, Dan! 👍🏻 Love your stuff, along with Metcalfe and Catchpole. Pity you not still at EVO.
thanks for the candid review, this is also in-line to what we learned from paper. tall gear has got lots of complaints but not improved, new 4.0L engine has been not a motorsport engine with none motorsport proven technologies... frustrations indeed for a new generation GT4
Idk about your bit of “non motorsports proven” .. it is , after all, a Porsche man.
Great review. Thank you! Keep up the excellent work Dan.

As usual Dan never disappoints. Beautiful machines. I really want to drive one to compare with my 981 Spyder. I think the PDK version will be the one to get. Better gear ratios will solve the Achilles heel of these machines.

That manual gearshifter looks very appealing in the gt4. Can we get a gt4 RS with the gt3 engine? 😎
It won't fit because of the oiling system. The biggest that will fit with the sump system is 3.8
jb001 jb001 the gears are still too long. Needs shorter ratios

Cayman gt4 or boxster spyder+ akrapovic exhaust= perfect drivers car
Fantastci video. Very well done. I was originally upset with the weight gain but you were the first to explain what actually happened. I do really wish they would have fixed the gear ratios for the manual. Very well known problem in the prior gen. As you stated, prior gen was better
Brilliant review Dan. Bit off topic the sound quality is really good especially in the spyder with the top down
Very nice review! Spider looks fantastic

Thanks for the great test drive and wonderful car review to me any Porsche is a great Porche car but the money, Has.
The silver and black and red roof look great.
Like others, I really enjoyed this review by Dan, much more honest and straight than motor journalists usually are, they seem to be biased towards Porsche. I speak as a long time Porsche owner, currently have a new manual GT3.
I'm amazed by the gear ratios. The only bad point in the last GT4 was the gearing, basically that should have been no.1 on the list of improvements, and they haven't done it?! Madness. And they surely could have used them across all Boxter/Cayman models so worth the developments costs. It's been a constant theme with all Porsches for decades and one they should have changed in conjunction with the ever increasing rev limit.
981 GT4 owner chiming in...as others have said, kudos Dan ! solid review indeed .
PFE filters are here to stay so can't do anything about the slightly muted dull noises. Would I like a slightly shorter 2nd/3rd ,4th and taller 6th stack ? sometimes, but the 981 GT4 is so dang brilliant that I tend to overlook the gear ratios most of the time.
Here's my 2 cents and it ain't worth all that much, but when the 718 GT4 w/ PDK comes out....it will be absolutely nuts. A game changer most likely, especially if the PDK box comes w/ GT3 ratios .
beautiful rims. they look even nicer in matte gold finish
I’ve owned and loved the previous 981 GT4 for 4 years now, and was all on board to buy the new one when released, but to be honest I’m underwhelmed. The only two main changes I was looking for (shorter gearing and 450hp minimum) are not there, so for the significant cost to upgrade I’ll probably just keep mine and install the new spec tires.
You would be better off getting Alex at Sharkwerks to change the ratio of the gearbox and up the engine output to 420 HP from 385 in addition to installing a lighter flywheel.
@@pfan12000 I've done the GIAC tune, BMC filter and Sharkwerks exhaust already, plus the RSS adjustable rear control links and solid front thrust arm bushings.
I think its Preety solid that if u have the GT4 u dont need this new one. If you dont then here is ur chance to get one. Aero is cool tho, can never shit on true downforce! 😄 whats your whp aftet the tune btw?
Great video Dan.

Finally, a reviewer that doesn’t need to nut huh the manufacturer and be honest with their thoughts. Often times these reviewers don’t say much anything bad because they are afraid of not being invited to events or backlash. Good stuff. This made me pass on this car. Good review!!
