true. also they are very easy to get more power out of now. The 4 cyl sound may not be as good, but a 718 cayman S can be tuned to around 500hp, for only a few thousand. in america where i am, the gt3 which has 500hp, can be between $200k-$300k. however the cayman S plus cost of modifications can be had for around $55k. It's suspension and brakes arent quite as good, but are definitely very capable, and the sound doesn't compare to a gt3, but its still a 500hp porsche, which is lighter than a 911 and mid engine vs rear. i believe they're amazing cars for the money if you're dead set on having a porsche, and willing to modify it. i hope to be able to buy and modify one myself next year.

Maybe/hopefully Porsche make an EV version NEXT To the ICE versions.
If I'm not wrong, Porsche's pretty serious about the ICE NOT dying.
I wouldn't mind a EV sports car like the boxster but if that's the only option that would be pretty sad.

Because we can clearly realize that over the months/years the more we advance in time, the more the automobile (the real/really good 1's !) becomes something accessible than to a certain part of the population : wealthy people !!
And all the others are/will be more and more confined to cars without flavors or character !!

Love it Sam. Gotta disagree about the 911 comparisons. I used to only drive a 911, but after buying a Boxster on a fluke, I've now had 3 of them including a 718 Spyder. I'll never go back to the 911 platform again. The mid-engine Boxster/Cayman platform is so much more fun to drive through the mountains and canyon carving than the 911. It is simply a better drivers car in my humble opinion. The 911 is a great, and big, but not as good or fun as the mid engine Porsche's on twisty mountain roads! Edit: 12/1/2023 I'm now on my 4th mid-engine Porsche, having just purchased a 2015 Boxster GTS in sapphire metallic blue. What an exhaust note! If you know, you know ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Best sports car out there.

    • @jameswillard1
      @jameswillard1 11 месяцев назад +5

You are correct as far as in comparison to “most 911’s” but Sam is now used to the 992 GT3 with its double wishbone suspension and rear axle steering and that car is so sharp and fun to drive that it makes the mid engine cars feel a little dull. I’ve been driving 911’s/Boxsters/Caymans/718’s for years and I could not believe what Porsche has done in the last decade with that rear engined chassis, it’s like (for better or worse) they removed all the detractors from it and reinforced all the positives to that design ….incredible engineering 🤔

Having driven GT3’s, GT3RS’s, and the GT4RS, for me, the 718 Spyder and GT4RS are some of the best road going sports cars you can tool around in. I find the GT3 and GT3RS to be too sticky to whimsically throw around on a two lane backcountry road. They are more suited for proper track duty.

@@justicepool I’m on my 2nd 718 Spyder (2020/2023) so I am obviously a huge fan and believe other than the long gearing and strangled exhaust sound below 5k RPM (easily rectified with OAP) that it’s absolutely the best sports car for the money and one of the best Porsche’s ever. When I said dull I was referring to the steering response/front end only in comparison with the insane 992 GT3.

As a 718 Spyder owner for 2 years, I put in a letter of intent with Porsche when this car was just a rumour, but never was able to get an allocation. Was told only one would be given to each dealership and of course they 918 Spyder buyers get first refusal on all special cars now so they can flip after 6 months. Very disappointed.
Comments about the interior being 'old' are crazy. I celebrate the physical dials & buttons as opposed to a giant digital screen and stupid 'haptic' nonsense in most new cars. This interior is timeless.
And 'It's a Boxster' comment is just your perception. Judge the car by it's performance/ability not which pigeon hole t place it in.

I live in South Florida and on a 30-50 mile morning drive the weather can change multiple times, and yes you can get away with driving fast through the storm or rainfall but the minute you slow for traffic you’re soaked (the missus just loves that 😂) I’ve got the Boxster 25th #248 and I love the 10-sec one finger operation and it probably saved my marriage. Sam, its horses for courses - the Spyder (and the 4 RS which I own) are cars for an occasion. They are not for a trip to Tescos (though my 4 R/S often is pressed into shopping duty!). I really like use my 4 RS for Sunday morning fun on good drivers’ roads and on the track. On track the 4 RS is sublime - utterly compelling - just like an RS product is meant to be: Like it or not these are cars for people with a choice of what to drive, who can pick the tool for the job. Personally, I don’t give a hoot about livability when it comes to these cars - if I want practicality, low noise, luggage carrying etc etc I’ll take the Defender (another car you didn’t “get” at first but which if you live outside London and have jobs to do is top notch) - with the RS I just want to drive arse off the thing. I also have a 991.2 GT3 which is not getting a look in since I got the RS; the Boxster platform is perfect for UK roads and the track, it now has one of the best engines ever made and- for once - Porsche stuck it in a sensible place - in the middle! If you want a great weekend all rounder, which is what you thought this might be (?) get a 718 GTS (if you can get your hands on one now - they are being snapped up) and you’ll be in heaven - that’s the right tool for that job. 😏

      @@wizzpet6562 i own a manual 718 spyder , my father a GTs 4.0 pdk.
Honestly, the gts 4.0 is an Amazing car : size, ride quality, 4.0 NA . You just don’t have the spyder look . But the balance of the car is amazing.
You feel the difference of chassis the first km between spyder and gts and you forget about it.
      Gts 4.0 is a complete car 👌

Lucky to have an allocation with an Oct build. Will be road tripping this in Europe for circa 3500 miles next year .. may take an ear plug for my right ear for some longer (boring) stretches. You're right Sam .. this is a +1 car for fun and a different proposition to a GT3 (which I've also had). I had a 991 Speedster which I lost in a storage fire so will be interesting to see how it compares. Anybody saying "it's not a 911 and 'just' a Boxster" is completely missing the point and could also be accused of being a car snob. You (probably) need both this and a 911 in you garage, it's debatable which one .... I suspect the 992 Speedster will be the closest comparison, less 'frantic' but not as 'fun' on (smaller) UK roads. 992 Speedster also likely to be an Exclusive Manufaktur, rather a pure GT Div product which, again, will make some difference.

    Great video Sam
As a Boxster owner myself I think you hit the nail on the head with the comment ‘it’s only a Boxster’
The whole ethos of the Boxster is great bang for buck sporty driving, this car doesn’t give that at no doubt a £200+k ‘flipper’ price.
At that level it’s around 8 times the price of my car and I very much doubt 8 times the enjoyment (especially when you need the roof up!)

I don't agree with him and you. This is the old thinking....not a 911.... I had 981 GT4, 911 991.2 GTS, 991.2 GT3, and now my garage has a 992 GT3 like him and a 718 Spyder. 991.2 GT3 steering, suspension, etc is like the 718 Spyder I had both at the same time annd the big difference is the engine and some handling based in the engine position. 992 GT3 is a step up in handling and steering. Sorry I drove all 718s and the GT versions are a world apart in feeling and experience than a regular 718 (great car do not misunderstand me). Is the dream of some GT car guys like me to have a 718 Spyder (one of the best looking car) with this engine, only thing It will not deliver is a manual transmission, but nobody is perfect 😀

Beautiful car....had an 05' Boxster that was a blast! Can't afford 162k....Spent less than half the price on a 23' C8. Obviously not a Porsche, but at 490hp. With a 6.2 V8 it's sure fun to drive!

I enjoyed your video driving through the Donautal (Valley of river danube). I usually drive in this area with my motorbike and enjoy the curves as much as obviously you did with the Porsche. Missed a bit the part in which you must have driven through a number of stone tunnels (probably cut out because of the low speed there...). Really funny to see you not far away from my home. I hope that Porsche will give you the opportunity soon to do this again.

Great video as always Sam, your honesty and transparency is why I watch you. I know I’m going to get a proper review not a Porsche review. As much as it looks like it’s great fun and the soundtrack is a typical GT product, if I had the money and wanted a true convertible Porsche I’d buy the 911 speedster and if I wanted a GT product for the road I’d buy a GT3 touring. You said it yourself underneath it’s a boxster (a vastly improved boxster but it still looks old compared to other Porsche products on the market) all that said on the right day and the right road I’m sure it would be the ultimate drivers car for the money. I look forward to your review on English roads and whether the suspension is just to harsh for our roads or that Porsche have managed to find the right balance. Either way great content and honest review👍🇬🇧

I'm 9 mins in and what a recipe for a Porsche video. You're just so good at what you do man, camera work masterclass. And I think we should all realize as enthusiast , stick with buying cars pre 2023. ICE cars have peaked that is the pre hybrid takeover, you don't need anything newer with these crazy ADM markups.

Great review of a superb car. What a fabulous engine noise, we need to make the most of it now I guess. Full EV Boxsters are on the way ....I'm sure performance will be fantastic on these, but they'll never replace the joy and emotion of this incredible soundtrack.

I spoke to the guys from Porsche at Goodwood Festival of Speed at the launch of the Spyder RS and they talked at length about the softer suspension. It is softer than a GT4 RS, so a better road car. However, what else compares to this at the list price?! My GT4 RS is firm but I use it as a weekend car as it is too special to use as a daily. I agree that the Spyder RS is probably a weekend car too, especially with that manual roof.

You saw three of these colors on the Spyder RS. Which do you think is the most beautiful? Is Vanadium gray luminous, beautiful, ...? Vanadium tends towards blue or green or not?

If you consider the insane markup, the fact that its not a track car, the slight compromise in performance to make it more "road going" compared to the GT4RS, I'd say the 718 is the better buy. Sure if you have unlimited money get the RS, but I actually think the 718 Spyder looks cleaner/better without all the comical aero bits and it has a usable roof.
