The title says sound comparison, but in my mind there is no comparison. In all honesty for a flat 4, the 718 doesn't sound too bad, in the sense that it sounds better than a subaru. However it's clearly not a porsche sound. If it had any other badge on the hood it'd be a passing grade but purists demand more.
I cannot understand how people can buy what appears to be the better car in numerous aspects (718) when the most important thing when buying a car must be the sound it makes. People would be crazy not to prefer the 981. It would be incredibly embarrassing driving a Boxster along the many new 20mph limit UK roads with a 718 sounding like a Subaru. It’s a no brainer so get the 981. Who cares that the 718 has a better performance , better mpg etc etc. How could anybody dare to drive down the road in a 718 when all the people they pass will be laughing at them and shouting “somebody nick those other two cylinders mate?” The feeling of sitting in a 718 knowing that it was 2 cylinders less must have a big psychological effect on them.

pdk - as driven auto boxes for years. It’s better than my 911 Gen 2 Targa 4S PDK I part exchanged it for, and different from the 993 Targa Tiptronic Varioram I had before that.
At 20mph you have to be in 1 gear to have a great sound (6000 refs with 981) a rather drive my 718 wih the great sound at 2500 ref and 20mph ( sorry for my bad english)
Great video, the 981 has such a great sound with the flat 6. It really shows the difference between the two cars' sounds. Maybe they'll bring back the 944 and put an n/a 6 in front, that would sound awesome. Give it a slant nose 911 front end and the new sleek tail lights, too.
Esthetically.. The 718 is AMAZING..i never liked boxters, but 718 line is for me better than the 911. Its really the top. The engine however sounds really sooo bad. It's indeed similar to a pumped Golf or Subaru. If the 718 had the 981 engine i believe cold have ecliplesd the 911. So verdict? Even having the money to buy a 718 new, i woukd go fot a used 981.
I'm guessing in 3 years when the next refresh comes they will have improved the exhaust note significantly. The Mini turbo 4 has a good sound so it stands to reason that the 718 could be as well.
I tested the 981 S, the 718 S and the 981 GTS....at the end I bought the GTS! The sound of the GTS it's simply incredible and the handling is just superb! I have other sport cars too (Vantage V8, Jaguar F Type V6 turbo and westfield V8 4000cc) . The adrenaline of the westfield is the best but the handling of the boxster GTS it's insane.
Stefano Mantese If you had to choose to keep either the GTS or the Ftype what would you choose? I’m planning on either getting the Ftype 340hp V6, or the new Cayman GTS can’t make up my mind
Real crying shame that they have ditched the flat 6 as it sounds so much better. Also sounds like the 718 is more exhaust noise rather than grunt from the engine (i.e. fake). I hope they go on to produce a GTS or GT4 with a flat 6.....
