Austin Dunham in my opinion there is gymnast calisthenics. Those are guys who train with rings, focusing on static skills but also doing dips, rows, pull ups etc on rings for strength and mass. They also have good mobility and flexibility, they can flip and all that good stuff.

Often acts as if they know what they are talking about but in practicality he/she will max out at 4 push-ups and 2/3rd's of a pull-up. Cough cough.
lmao 'rare'. Who are we kidding, most of us are like that. Easier to watch a video and fantasize than do the work. Yes, talking about myself. Although I am starting to train now!

No flash, no tricks, no performances. Just honest hard work with the goal of building STRENGTH throughout the whole body.

And very cliched. No impressive skills. You can call em, lazy calisthenics. Now dont run after me saying so what? They are hardworkers. Lol Ever seen any gymnast? They are the real deal in calisthenics world. Best movers on planet with ace muscles!
Truly Informative Video, Man. I really admire your improvisation since you not only classified the calisthenics atheletes but rather you defined the hierarchy of calisthenics starting from military type (basic) to the aesthetics one (advanced). Definitely you gave me 6 levels to progress through .... Keep up Such Awesome Work and again Hats Off To You :D
I'm currently a PowerBuilder but I will hop on to make calisthenics the main focus. When I do, I'm aiming towards the last one, Aesthetic Calisthenics.
I'd like to say that I'm more of an aesthetic calisthenic athlete although when doing it, I do calisthenics for the sake of getting stronger over looking good. As you've mentioned, it's good to have a little bit of everything and actually that is something that I am trying to focus on more. Great video!
Hannibal for King is actually a combination of "Playground" calisthenics and "Aesthetic" calisthenics... He does the playground calisthenics exercises (pushups, pull ups, dips, muscle-ups, etc.) but *not* for high marathon rep sessions or "challenges"... he instead does few reps at a time, but with quality and concentration. Hannibal also does static moves (planches and levers), unlike the more typical playground athlete. But he also has several qualities of the "Aesthetic" calisthenics category because he trains to build as best a physique as he can... He does strive for better performance also and routinely does harder variations of the basic calisthenics moves, but only within the context of improving his body and increasing his muscle mass... Hannibal does not use any external weights at all (no weight training or weighted calisthenics), unlike the typical Aesthetics athlete who would do so if it meant more muscle.
You can't forget about Martial Arts calisthenics! These are the types of people who hold planches with 2 fingers, handstands on their heads, do many flips, and are ultra-flexible. The Shaolin Monks are an example of this.
That’s me. Lol I did some variety of some body weight movements, and I try to do them out of a norm achieving a naturally muscular and fit physique. 💪🏽🔥💯🏃🏾♂️
Aesthetics calisthenics is the life!!! You get to build strength and muscle without learning effort even with your body weight similar to bodybuilding movements with or without weights.
GREAT video! I personally think that the last type of calisthenics style is the best too! because it mix together the statics , the power and obviously the 'good looking' body . It's a perfect mix and that 's my goal! Thanks for your videos! You're a Beast! :)
Although funny is a great video to show different focuses within the same discipline. And also a way to show "Iron dogmatics" that calisthenics is not only about high reps and that you can get ridiculously strong with calisthenics. Keep it up man!
I do "playground calisthenics." Pistol squats, muscle-ups, one-hand pushups, v-ups, toes-to-bars, and handstand pushups are my favorite exercises. I do split lunges, pushups, and pullups only to burn out. Pretty much never do any statics except handstands, reps are just more fun for me. I usually combine the exercises in a HIIT format and go for time.
Nice Video Austin! Never thought of it from that perpective. But from my side, I can really say that I fortunately follow your type of calisthenics :-D Best from Germany, Sebastian
My style of training is a mix of those things, they are all important if you want to get the total benefits of the every attribute. I do static work, I do bodyweight for high reps, I do weight vest, and belt weights, and 1-limb movements for maximal resistance.
Chris Heria is a beast, but he has been mentioned here. I am surprised that no one has mentioned Andrew Vadnal from FitnessFAQs. He is really strong, has great statics (at 1.90m) and has a shit-ton of awesome content! Not meaning to hijack Austin's video/channel, just sharing what I consider to be of value to those who may not know.
I see Frank Medrano doing more static movement rather the high reps movement that you mention. He doesn't do like gymnastics (perfect movements), but even in the image that you show, he is doing a human flag.
There are 4 types of street workout athletes- 1. Dynamic athelets ( freestyle) training mostly dynamic movents like 360 swing and shrimp flip 2. Sets and reps athletes includes weighted cali 3. Static and streinght move athlets training static streinght and pover moves. 4 . Complete athletes . Training 2 or all 3 of above. Also you can specialise in some specific movements and exesises but i would not count it as an seperate athlete group
I'm most definitely training like a number 4 right now, so I can master the basics, and then get to your level. Big ups to you though. You're a real inspiration to see young black men succeed in doing what they love, and you even inspired me to start my own journey. Keep up the hard work because you do so much more for your fans than just workout. 💪💪
I think if you're gonnaa differentiate between playground and aesthetic calisthenics and make them 2 separate things even though they are closely related, then I believe another type of calisthenics should also be on the list that's closely related to military calisthenics. Minimalist Calisthenics, and this has been also called Combat conditioning. It can literally be as finite as Squats and Push Ups in supersets with minimal rest under time periods in the style of escalated density training. This style of calisthenics often has the user in professional scenarios perform a compounded amount of thousands of reps daily. In its most extremes take The Great Gama as a example performing upwards of 6000 hindu squats and 3000 hindu push ups daily. But this guy was a elite wrestler, top of his field. Another example would be Mike Tyson performing a compounded 2000 squats, 2500 sit ups, 500 push ups, 500 bench dips, 500 66 pound ez bar shrugs daily in the 1980s when training with Cus D'amato. Keep this in mind he performwd these exercise in the context of a circuit, and performed these circuit workouts multiple times a day to accumulate the extreme reps daily. And again, this is a professional athlete who sleeps 8 hours at night and also sleeps 2 additional times a day for recovery and eats a lot of food. But for your average person, taking this concept of ultra high reps and just applying it to the basic Squat and Push Up will generate phenomenal results. You'll be suprised how much your posterior chain and torso as well as core responds and develops indirectly just from these 2 movements alone, not just your legs and pushing musculature.
Really enjoyed this short rant, I am totally new to this sort of training and am pleased to say I see myself being a number 6 style and I agree that flexibility and diet are vital elements. Wise head on young shoulders, thanks again.
Ninja Calisthenics! All that crazy parkour stuff. I'd say it's different enough from the flashy type, as it tends to have a different focus, more pragmatic approach to movements, and often incorporates different exercises.
awesome vid dude, love the names you came up with lol. I think I would fall into the last category: the Aesthetic Calisthenics. Definitely, while trying to build more muscle. Bout to steal that term tho. man that was simply awesome. Lets go # bodyweight bodybuilders
I am then that playground calisthenic...extremely hard and long workouts, lots of muscleups and stuff...but yes, basics....and my body is super hot :) soo...thats what works for me.
Hi Austin! Very interesting video. Definitely, there are some types of calisthenics that you have pointed. However, the most typical deviation for me is: 1. endurance/strenght: where in basic movements like push-ups and pull-ups athletes goes for more reps or more strength using weights (you could also point weighted here). 2. Freestyle: showing statics and dynamics. Dynamics is the most missed in this video, as in Asia, Africa, Europe and South America there are a lot of great dudes, doing 720 and other tricks, almost copying some pure gymnastics skills! The best type for me is Freestyle: complete athletes, like Danel Laizans Viktor Kamenov or Andrea Larosa. Cheers!
Such an informative video; thank you for making and sharing. I've observed that as I get older, I tend to move away from Flashy, and more towards Static and Flexible.
im closer to the "flashy" calisthenics but in reality i just like explosive moves like superman pushups, clap push ups, or pistol squat jumps since im a martial artist and i really need to have an explosive body to be stronger at punching and kicking
RAY RAY Larosa is good at only statics. The best athletes are the ones that have a 50/50 focus on both staticks and dynamics like Daniels Laizans for example.
I like that as the list goes on I have a bit of everything. Im still working on handstands and planche. But number 6 I felt was spot on. Im 110 and I was finally able to do 224 push ups (took 40 min) I focus a lot on Time under tension. Full range of motion. Lots of reps and sets. I even do a decent abs and legs routine. But I definitely have the mindset of the bodyweight body builder. I hope to gain 25 pounds of solid muscle through pure calisthenics.
Explosive training is definitely important for performance and aesthetic goals eg, training explosive exercises can have a carry over into achieving a specific movement in order to progress intensity which can lead to hypertrophy. Athletes who train "flashy calistenics" do it more as a sport rather than a workout but their workout will have exercises that help them achieve thoses moves. But I agree if you're training for aesthetics a lot of those moves are not really necessary
I really like Daniel from FitnessFAQs, Brendan Meyers from Calaesthethics, and Gregory Scott fitness, Simnett Nutrition he is a complete beast! and of course your channel too..I guess they all have the same training principles too.
Lol Austin? Srsly? Hannibal and frank medrano not strong with statics oO? They are the masters! Ever seen hannibals front lever? Its the best on the planet
I cant classify myself as any of these types, but I think that my mindset fits the static, the playground and the body building calisthenics. Someday... Im on month 3 now, but I havent had much of a transformation.
I can do my body weight in dips too, but what Austin is getting at is that if you try to see people like him and Hannibal for king to a planche they most likely have bad form for what is considered to be high level skills
Everything should be in a Callisthenics athlete program/goal but personally the most important one is the aesthetic..the fact that you just lift your bodyweight and you look like an aesthetic bodybuilder but with way more impressive strength is the best one

Lol. Nice video. I used to be a military guy then a high rep guy I lift now but sometimes I add in all kinds of movements and bodyweight movements
I will be buying your program soon. Does it also help with dieting and how much protein I should be taking?
+Apples yo yep!
Austin Dunham holy shit fast reply. Good customer service right here
I love that you use Osvaldo at the statics :)
I'm a fan of him. :")
I also only train for statics, but I know some variation can be good.
Lol Austin? Srsly? Hannibal and frank medrano not strong with statics oO? They are the masters! Ever seen hannibals front lever? Its the best on the planet
LupoWolf not even close to some Russian kids
Thomaesthetics haha xD but they weigh 40kg not compareable.
LupoWolf nope just see "noa man workout"channel at front lever things and they look like a kid in comparison
chanses armstrong rings are not calisthenics ;) and they can planche maybe not perfect form but they can endure it long.
Have you ever seen hannibal doing a planche? No? I know why. Because he can't do a planche!
Explosive stuff man that takes practice and it def is working out man, so take it back lol
in my opinion bodyweight bodybuilder is the way to go
I cant classify myself as any of these types, but I think that my mindset fits the static, the playground and the body building calisthenics. Someday... Im on month 3 now, but I havent had much of a transformation.
I'm sorry did u just say frank medrano isn't strong he does dips for reps wearing a belt with his body weight on it
I can do my body weight in dips too, but what Austin is getting at is that if you try to see people like him and Hannibal for king to a planche they most likely have bad form for what is considered to be high level skills
Chris Heria does too lol ruclips.net/video/3WnL3fpRg7k/видео.html
Everything should be in a Callisthenics athlete program/goal but personally the most important one is the aesthetic..the fact that you just lift your bodyweight and you look like an aesthetic bodybuilder but with way more impressive strength is the best one
