me too, never looked at it that way. guess people enjoy calisthenics because it's so difficult. at the gym, you can always do same exercise but with less weight lol

Even tho i do only calisthenics i dont think is harder than weight training, i mean you cant say That is easy to bench 400 lbs, and calisthenics aren't That hard, you can find a progresion at your level and you can start from there
William, skunk has a point it is still calisthenics, it is just not a body weight exercise anymore, having weightplates, in between your legs When doing pull ups doesn’t make it a not calisthenics move, but it does make it a non body weight exercise.
When you get my age,73, lifting weights for years left me with a ton of physical issues that bodyweight exercises have greatly reduced. I wish that I had started bodyweight exercises years earlier or did just bodyweight right along and never did weights. My later years in life would most likely been a lot more comfortable.
*I feel like bad form causes great issues, bodyweight or weight.* That's true... but it's been very rare for me to come across a dedicated older lifter who doesn't have to deal with some kind of pain issue from back problems, shoulders, elbow joints and bad knees that need to be wrapped every time they train. The problem with weights is that many of the movements are really unnatural for the body to start with, so joints very quickly start to deteriorate once you start overloading them on a regular basis with any substantial weight... good form or not. Young guys full of enthusiasm can get away with many of the huge, back-breaking lifts you see here in their RUclips channels... but I would wager in about 10 or 20 years, these same guys are going to pay a big price in the form of joint problems (many of them have already). The *only* calisthenics-type guys that do suffer from very bad joint issues are the "bar acrobats" that fly through the air flipping off bars and landing on them too... That kind of activity is *very* damaging to the joints in a short amount of time. But normal calisthenics exercises like push-ups, dips and pull-ups, bodyweight squats, etc. shouldn't cause any of these issues to the same degree as weight training long-term... One little-known fact about proper calisthenics training is that joint strength health and *building* is just as much a priority as performing the movements themselves.
*So, should we lift less weight to avoid joint problems?* A good first step would be to make every lift about fully controlling the weight from start to finish, never sacrificing form and muscle tension just to use a heavier weight. That means no momentum, no swinging and no jerking the weights (even when you get tired).
Leon Henning yeah no kidding..you get ripped doing straight bodyweight..you gain mass by adding weight..plus. It helps to break that plateau everyone gets..add just 10 lbs and then watch your shit jump. But yet there are gonna be people saying differently and all i gotta do is point to austins old ass pics..yeah he was ripped bit what changed? He started adding weight ontop of his normal program and then just playing it off like its all bodyweight..lmfao..i know bc i was in martial arts for 3 years..NO WEIGHTS..got ripped as a motherfucker but guess what..still had no serious mass..now i am not trying to get all muscled up bc more muscle means slower..even brice lee stated that he got too big and dropped mass to trade for speed..and he even trained with weights..hmmmm..old info becoming new..yawns
@@diamondjutsu you're right but isn't it possible to gain muscle with no weights? I mean, as I've heard, the more difficult the exercise the better results. You probably won't be able to gain much muscles if you're trying to look shredded, but if you continue eating alot and doing calisthenics I'm pretty sure you can still build muscles.
People have this general idea that calisthenics leg training is very inferior to training legs with weights, or that you absolutely *need* exercises like barbell squats and leg presses to develop legs because calisthenics alone won't cut it... What I've found over the years is that the difference in muscle size results between weights and calisthenics really isn't as much as you would think... @@davepazz580 good genetics? Yeah is useful, but not mandatory. Genetic is going to make a difference only once you get to your genetic limit, which very few people reach. For muscle growt you need progressive overload, which can be in the form of mechanical load (adding weight or doing a harder squat variation) or metabolic stress ( more reps and reduced rest time, let's say more volume). So with calinesthenics you can only reach to a certain level of mechanical overload ( the pistol squat) which will make you grow muscle, but then you'll end up stopping, if you want to keep mechanically overloadoading your legs, you just have to use weight
@@alebisello9106 try some legs skills like matrix, nordic curl, or try explosive pistol squats. And then tell me that you cannot increase the mechanical overload
Calisthenics is good if you are in the military and don't have weights to lift. All u need is a pullup bar. When you fall in love with the freedom of calisthenics, weight lifting will feel like a prison.
Calisthenics is good for the global athletism ( relative strength, explosivity , flexibility , stamina, agility cardio etc ) Bodybuilding is better for the absolut strength and muscle gain. I preafer calisthenics. ( sorry for my bad english but it beacause i am french 😔😏👁👄👁 )
Correct. In northern Europe, evolution built people to lift heavy things. Look at women's long jump. Lots of beautiful Italian women in that sport. They are feminine. Look at Crossfit. Very masculine white northern European women like Anne Thorsdottir.
In italia you have some of the strongest people in calisthenics comunity which is awesome and this sport is guaranted gonna grow a lot in the next years...Good luck and greetings from Slovenia🇸🇮💪
@giuliomannucci I am obsessed with Italian Paleo diet. I am American but family from Bari and Calabria. I eat pork every day. Here in the US, Vince Gironda believed in calisthenics as part of a bodybuilding program.
People only have issues with calisthenics because they don't want to try it and take it seriously. It is just like everything else that people have an issue with in life that clearly work well and have positive results for others. Instead of trying new things they choose to hate on it. Typical of the overemotional climate we are in. Great video.
PS4 - crnboz I gained 5 kgs in one month, so I believe this dude. ( I managed this by eating twice as much "féculents " as normal, and training 1/2 day)
Bro I started Calisthenics about 2 months ago using your follow along vids and the progress is unbelievable. I love it!!! Keep the workout videos coming!!
I found this channel a week ago and just watching a ton of ur vids has motivated me to commit to body weight workouts and I've felt so much better in myself ever since...a week that's all u need to make a commitment
Good video . I am 55 and started calisthenics at the beginning of the year. Love mixing it with machines and free weights. I think more calisthenic parks would go a long way to making it more popular. Too many gyms. Thanks for the motivation bro
that 5th thing you mention is true, I haven't met anybody who love calisthenics as I do. I find myself being the only one in the gym implementing calisthenics exercises , plus there's no calisthenics parks near me, but I can't let that stop me tho!
This is a great vid. well done man. For so long I had a personal problem with calisthenics and thinking to myself "This sucks because I can't target my chest separately, or target my shoulders separately". Eventually I realised that this was a bodybuilding mentality. We're not meant to be trying to grow biceps, chest and legs in isolation. In reality, real fitness benefits come from using your entire body how it is meant to be used, everything is connected and that's the beauty of the whole thing.
Thank you so much for introducing me to calisthenics, I started watching your videos around January and i have been working out ever since. I have so much work to put in but im happy with where i am at. I can now do 34 pullups in a row and im just geting started >: ) Your videos always inspire me, i love to see you shining, keep up the greak work!
An other problem with calisthenics that one guy told me, what stopped him is that IT IS TOO HARD, yeah calisthenics is also about training a weak brain probably the weakest muscle in our bodies !
It actually IS too hard. I've been training (mostly weightlifting) for 2 years. I stopped weightlifting completely half a year ago to start calisthenics because i liked the concept way more. The only thing i can say is, get enough rest. That's it. 3 trainings a week are enough for maximum gains without experiencing injuries. Fuck those guys saying "no pain no gain" well boiii if your tendon hurts and you don't stop, good luck quitting your favourite sport jackass. It's all about getting enough rest. That's when the muscle is being built. And if you do it right, you can have great gainz.
@@tenhsxronhstenojerjhs4276 Ugh I hate that saying! I'm a dancer and I train four times a week, and I cringe so hard when the girls in stretching videos say “no pain, no gain” and then end up breaking a bone at 18 and never being able to dance again.
I live in Brazil and do calisthenics for about 6 months. Two friends of mine started too, training with our body is amazing specially during quarantine. Here this sport is so underrated, even bodybuilding have a lot of misconceptions around you know, so imagine calisthenics. But it's very good, really like your videos man, love from Brazil
I started in a gym lifting weights, got muscle and such, but then moved towards calisthenics and I will NEVER go back. Better results, more fun, more relatable to real life, and more! I honestly think once you get to weighted calisthenics you are a beast. Nice video. P.S. you can do Calisthenics in an apartment with just a pull-up bar and dip bar station. My big issue is legs are tough. Have to do a lot of single-leg exercises to get a good lower body. Might require a bar and some weights if you really want to develop a good lower body.
For me I can’t stay motivated for much more than a month or two just doing Cali / Bodyweight work. What I do like about it is that it is full body oriented. So I stay in the flow using all kinds of equipment plus Cali and focusing on full body workouts. Thanks as always AD!
💚💚💚very good video! Coming from weight lifting just getting into Calisthenics and I love it. I feel with Calisthenics I'm more connected and in control of my body and it feels amazing! Thank you for posting.
I'd say the biggest problem I have with cali is how underappreciated it is here in the UK. In a south coast city it's bloody difficult to find any park or gym with the typical bars, restricting what I can do to my home mostly and utilising the gym for hybrid work
I’m just an old school lifter laying off traditional weight training for a few months due to joint issues and will be taking body weight training seriously hoping for new gains .And the (handstand is my all time goal)
I changed from weights to calisthenics about 15 months ago and it's the best thing I've ever done. Having a great specialist calisthenics personal trainer helps, but I'm determined to get good at this way of training. It does take time, patience and perseverance though, which is why I think it's not mainstream because very few people are disciplined enough to stick with it long enough to gain progress.
Really informative video; as someone who has never lifted weights before or had a need to, I completely agree with your points. Keep up the good work 💪🏾
I agree with everything you said, and me I do a 50/50 split along with intermittent fasting. Through this I have made great progress, but I know there is more a long ways to go for me. My goal by the end of this year is to be able to do a muscleup and a pistol squat.
Never liked free weights but that’s how ⮽ started and when ⮽ was shown in alternative which was calisthenics ⮽ fell in love with it. Truly love the workouts and the strength it gives you and mobility.
You're the best man I have started doing calistenics like 2 months ago. I have already seen some results in my chest and my shoulders and a little bit in my arm, but there's of course a looooong way to go. Seriously, seeing your results motivates me soo much. Thank you for your awesome vids man !
How did you choose a workout routine, did you use a app or buy a program. Or did you just started doing push ups. I started yesterday with a calesthenics app. I want to start (wich I did) but dont really know what I am doing. Maby you can give me some tips.
From Canada where the Calisthenics scene is fairy small.... doing my best to promote and grow the Calisthenics community and hopefully one day we get to workout man... I’ve started my own RUclips channel as well. Motivation from you and Chris Heria always man.
Hey bro. I’m new to this channel & only been doing calisthenics for around 5 to 6 months LOVING IT ssooo much gains. My own family See the massive gain in me. I still can’t believe it. I found Chris Heria by accident & then you. I have been lifting weights since I was a teenager got Big but not strong. Calisthenics makes you Strong makes Gain muscle. Muscles I’ve never seen before. Hey Austin, first of all, congrats from Portugal! 5 min ago I decided to go find something on progressive overload in Calisthenics, and when I checked my subscriptions this video was the first ahahah thanks Keep going! Awesome work!
5th comment, great job! Keep it up and I don’t have a problem at all with calisthenics either I’ve built a lot of muscle and achieved great calisthenics skills which is overall fun and amazing to do. Calisthenics life!💪🏽🔥
Of all people on youtube teaching, talking, and doing calisthenics you have the best build. So keep on doing what you are doing. I appreciate your videos and also like Matt at Red Delta Project. You are both class acts.
Yeah I love calisthenics. I lifted weights for about 6months and gained about 10 lbs. I switched to calisthenics and gained another 20lbs in about a year
Yo, awesome vid dude, you definitely pointed out some things that are kinda a pet peeve But bro, you wouldn't believe how calisthenics is popular in my country, Croatia, it's astonishing. I'm now training calisthenics for around 1 year and 2 months and I made pretty good progress. We in Croatia have lots of comps and it's crazy how many people participate in the competitions. Here's a little story(this happened 2 weeks ago) : in nearby town there was built new calisthenics park, I had made an appointment for a battle with my friend to see who will win, and we'll probably battle there on the new park. When me and my two friends came there, there were a lot of people training, LIKE A LOT. And when we started warming up and getting ready for the training I saw some guys our age training, there were two skinny guys and one overweight dude. I was so happy to see people actually do something with themselves and moved out of their comfort zone. After I got warmed up, I just did some static holds, just to see how I'm doing with those. And I did the Shoulder Flag/Dragon Flag and the saw that and they were astonished. This was the moment where me and my friends felt like gods to those people. We were talking to them and pointing out some mistakes we did and how they will progress faster. I was so happy to see them work and shaping their body and mind.
"Problems" with Calisthenics mentioned: 1) Cannot build muscle. 2)Cannot isolate/target specific muscles w/ it. 3)You have to be super skinny to start Calisthenics. 4)It's "not actually working out" (only doing skills). 5)Calisthenics is not popular.
1. It certainly builds muscle. 2. Well, calisthenics tend to be compound not isolation exercises so it's kind of true. 3. Calisthenics does favor lighter people just like gymnastics or swimming 4. 5. Calisthenics is very popular in NYC because they invested in equipment decades ago. I think people avoid chins and pulls out of shame they can't do one perfect rep.
Im only on calisthenics (Begginer) and already put on 4 extra kilos and gained alot of muscle in just 4 months. Still have a long way to go, not looking like Austin Dunham, but am surely stronger. :D Just keep consistent, eat well and enough, and progress from time to time with the same workout Till youre a pro at it and have to change it again.
Im 12 and from everything i heard i choose calisthenics with 100% confidence i just love to controll my body. Like i had a so big milestone if i managed a skill. Im the most proud for the L-sit it looks so cool. I too can frogstand and some others and i am working on the handstand, that is my goal
Regarding being too heavy/fat for calisthenics...apply regressions, which make the exercises easier and reduces how much weight you're moving, and how much work the joints and muscles have to do. Then you progress by reducing how many regressions you utilize, and then start adding on progressive changes. My problem was finding a good list of regressions/progressions to adapt the exercises to my needs. I finally found an excellent list "Seven Ways to Scale Any Exercise" in Chapter 3 of "Your Body is Your Barbell" by Gaddour, and was finally able to start calisthenics training.
Nice video man! I agree with you and I really hate that some people think that weights are for being seriois and bodyweight training is just for messing around.
In Europe, I feel like nobody knows what callisthenics is. Most of my friends are to lazy to work out and think I am weird because I do callisthenics, .....sad noises.....
@Lawrence 02 Same. Me and my friend were only one that i know that train callisthenics or weightlifting it doesn't matter. And i broke my leg ond vaccation and i am recovering 2 years and it still going😔
Man you're right about people not taking advantage of bodyweight exercises here in the US. In my gym i have never once seen anyone do weighted pullups, chin ups, dips etc.. I really want to be someone who makes a calisthenics mainstream along with bodybuilding. I think both create an awesome physique when used together
You can build muscle with calisthenics. If you treat the one-armed pushup, one-armed pull up, and weighted pistol squat like the big three compound lifts (bench, deadlift, squat), you can get some serious mass gains.
Austin brings up some very good points about calisthesenics. I have to disagree with the fact that he says that you can get a better work out with calisthesnics than with weights. Just because of the fact of lifting weight challanges your muscle strength in a way that body weight simply can't due to its inability to isolate certain muscle groupes.
Dude stop talking about Freestyle calisthenics like its not a real ' workout '. Your judging a sport that you dont even know or understand, most freestyle proffessional athletes are way stronger than you and do as much reps and sets in their workout as a normal calisthenics atheletes. I have much respect for you but its been a couple times that i saw video of you just bringing freestyle down like its not a big part of the calisthenics movement! Being able to mix insane statics strenght and dynamics is way harder than you could imagine ( because im pretty sure you never really tried freestyle) and if you dont understand this or respect freestyle athletes, your just not having the right mindest of a calisthenics athlete. just got take a look at Ikwhan streetworkout, Daniels Laizans or even Anrea Larosa and now tell me thats this is only "flashy calisthenics move" and not a real sports similare to gymnastique wich is one of the hardest sports in world. Anyway i hope you will stop using as much weights for your training and start promote calistheics in a better way.
I'm still kind off a kid, I'm 13, so I can't enter in those programs but I won't stop and I really like and enjoy calisthenics I'm training and I am getting better slowly but surely
Hey austin, are you ever thinking of going to a calisthenics strength/power competition? Just curious if you're aiming for something like that in the future since you love weighted calisthenics.
Here in greece where this kind of training started ! Now is getting really famous! Calisthenics gyms are opening and more people want to start calisthenics! Really happy about that! Sorry for my english...
That last problem is my problem also. Nearly always when I say to someone that I do calisthenics workouts to gain muscle they are like what. I know only one person in my city who knows what is calisthenics.
A L.s yea but my point is that more people need know about calisthenics. One of my goals on my channel is to try and make more people interested in calisthenics.
JLethic it's a hard road man. We're in a high tech lazy society. People would rather inject/supplement up/ or get surgery to aquire a body or performance. I use to walk in gyms without a membership jus to try and show off muscle ups etc. Very few impressed. They'd rather sit and powder scoop in a nice AC flat screen having gym. And pose and slam rubber weights while yelling, thinking they're Arnold. I'm with the real. Get outdoors challenge nature/defy gravity etc. I tell weight lifters. You can always squat with a heavy stone or sand. We don't need all those machines and easy access. Stay up with your mission, best of luck!
I've always struggled with Caleistichics workouts. I want to get better at doing them, but it's been a hassle staying motivated to do them.. . I do have to give this dude props on how good he is at doing them..
Shout out from PH. Been doing calishenics for 8months now. Never felt better with my body. Although people say i got thinner, I just say im fitter because I was doing weights before and had muscle and fat
9999rockey the gym and weights will be way better for legs. But hill sprints and Jump circuits are great. Like a 5x 30 second jumps including lunge jumps distance frog jumps ect (will be brutal)
Cocktus You speak of problems, but offer no solutions. So then, it's demotivating what your saying. You should offer some tips to prevent muscle imbalances.
Cocktus this makes no sense! With weights you also can get imbalances! About legs you are probably right though. But if you have luck with your legs that's no problem (like me luckely) haha.
It is much easier to fix imbalances with weights since you can usually do one side at the time with dumbells. Say you have an imbalance in your back (like me) only way would be to do chins with one arm at the time which most people aren't cabable of. In the gym you can easily do one arm at the time with lat pulldowns.
I do a 40/30/30 Split of training. That is 40% weights, 30% calisthenics and 30% MMA/Boxing. I really enjoy it because you can be a well functioned athlete as well as looking good and its really fun to mix them together in a great workout 😀
For me, it's the skills progression that's not as easy to progress (like weights) and don't build much muscle. It's hard to be good at skills while trying to get big at the same time (more weight=harder to do skills)
I get weird looks when I'm training. I don't really care, but I do notice it. The biggest benefit to bodyweight training is you can do it anywhere. No equipment required. I was going pull-ups on an A-frame over a sandbox while my kid was playing at a park. I think the biggest problem with calisthenics is that you have no excuse when you skip a workout. You have to own when you don't train. You don't get to blame your car or the line for the squat rack. Good points. Keep it up.
I started calisthenics when I was obese. All you have to do is progressions. Plus, a lot of bodyweight movements are compound movements, which is great for burning fat along the way.
Do you have any problems with calisthenics? Let me know on my recent instagram post!!! @austin_dunham

😊So true
That's with anything fam. People who make weight lifting a lifestyle will love it.
I am batman it’s funny you say that because prisoners are literally forced to do calisthenics to stay in shape
Calisthenics is good for the global athletism ( relative strength, explosivity , flexibility , stamina, agility cardio etc )
Bodybuilding is better for the absolut strength and muscle gain.
I preafer calisthenics. ( sorry for my bad english but it beacause i am french 😔😏👁👄👁 )
Here in Italy calisthenics is growing a lot, but here fitness in general is not that known as in USA......
I agree. People are ashamed they can't do more than 1 chin, so they avoid calisthenics altogether.
kharis87 I started it and my friends call me a wild men when they see me doing skills training
I got my first 5 hpsu
I switched from merely weights to calisthenics with distance running and weights about 2 years now. Best decision ever.
The real problem is when you dont do calisthenics.
I did calestenics for a month after lifting weights for two years, and with calestenics I gained 5 pounds of muscle and lost bodyfat
KP Vlogs nice
then u were lifting really good on the gym lol....
PS4 - crnboz I gained 5 kgs in one month, so I believe this dude. ( I managed this by eating twice as much "féculents " as normal, and training 1/2 day)
KP Vlogs what calisthenics exercises are you doing by gaining that weight in amonth of calisthenics?
unknowjlm yeah so true lol
Excessive Noise good point
You guys should check out Official Thenx and Chris Heria if you’re interested in calisthenics. That dude is sick!,
It actually IS too hard.
Lol ..agreed
1.Eat
2.Sleep
3.Calistenics 3 times a day
4.Not work
💪💪💪💪
If calisthenics is not popular in U.S., in Slovakia is non exist at all then.
tiež to tak vidím,keď cvičím sám na ihrisku .... a fitnes centra plne prepotencov
then start it bro, sparks the fire. The secret of getting ahead is getting started.
same in belgium, literally no one
I'd say the biggest problem I have with cali is how underappreciated it is here in the UK. In a south coast city it's bloody difficult to find any park or gym with the typical bars, restricting what I can do to my home mostly and utilising the gym for hybrid work
Don't they have the bars at like children's parks?
@@fourthlove8745 most of em are so thick! like you can't grip them
That's why I started my channel. To help grow the calisthenics community in the U.S
Calisthenics has taken over The Netherlands, haha!
I’m just an old school lifter laying off traditional weight training for a few months due to joint issues and will be taking body weight training seriously hoping for new gains .And the (handstand is my all time goal)
Did u get it?
I changed from weights to calisthenics about 15 months ago and it's the best thing I've ever done. Having a great specialist calisthenics personal trainer helps, but I'm determined to get good at this way of training. It does take time, patience and perseverance though, which is why I think it's not mainstream because very few people are disciplined enough to stick with it long enough to gain progress.
Just put in the work and calisthenics will take you to the next level. I hope here in Indonesia, calisthenics can be more popular😁
Dedi Arya same im from indonesia too

Dayum, thanks Austin, you are my second best youtuber! Do not stop please! You answered so much of my questions!!
Who ur first officialthenx or calisthenicsmovements
Really informative video; as someone who has never lifted weights before or had a need to, I completely agree with your points. Keep up the good work 💪🏾
I agree with everything you said, and me I do a 50/50 split along with intermittent fasting. Through this I have made great progress, but I know there is more a long ways to go for me. My goal by the end of this year is to be able to do a muscleup and a pistol squat.
Most of my workout routine is bodyweight training however I always add those three: squats, benchpress and dead lifts cuz I like to.
Never liked free weights but that’s how ⮽ started and when ⮽ was shown in alternative which was calisthenics ⮽ fell in love with it. Truly love the workouts and the strength it gives you and mobility.
Dude you should start some calistetic competitions around the U.S.A. That would be badass bro!
A year later who would have know during covid 19. Team calisthenics is all you can do during a quarantine and it’s awesome!
You're the best man
I have started doing calistenics like 2 months ago.
I have already seen some results in my chest and my shoulders and a little bit in my arm, but there's of course a looooong way to go.
Seriously, seeing your results motivates me soo much.
Thank you for your awesome vids man !
Emir yes dudee
How is your journey bro? Still going hard?
I know that feeling man feels fucking great to see results after hard work and dedication. Keep on going my man
How did you choose a workout routine, did you use a app or buy a program. Or did you just started doing push ups. I started yesterday with a calesthenics app. I want to start (wich I did) but dont really know what I am doing. Maby you can give me some tips.
Im doing 50/50 with my workout and thank you for all the vids Bro. Very entertaining and educational :D Keep this up!
I definitely want to try to incorporate some calisthenics work in to my gym routine💪
From Canada where the Calisthenics scene is fairy small.... doing my best to promote and grow the Calisthenics community and hopefully one day we get to workout man... I’ve started my own RUclips channel as well. Motivation from you and Chris Heria always man.
Great info
Bam Baam what up when is your next video out
Lol

Hey Austin, first of all, congrats from Portugal!
5 min ago I decided to go find something on progressive overload in Calisthenics, and when I checked my subscriptions this video was the first ahahah thanks
Keep going! Awesome work!
Not even halfway through and loving it! Great video!
5th comment, great job! Keep it up and I don’t have a problem at all with calisthenics either I’ve built a lot of muscle and achieved great calisthenics skills which is overall fun and amazing to do. Calisthenics life!💪🏽🔥
I fucking love combining calisthenics but the gym is super helpful and weighted calisthenics IS THE SHIT dude, love your channel Austin!!
Drinking Game: Take a shot every time he says 'calisthenics'
Of all people on youtube teaching, talking, and doing calisthenics you have the best build. So keep on doing what you are doing. I appreciate your videos and also like Matt at Red Delta Project. You are both class acts.
Yeah I love calisthenics. I lifted weights for about 6months and gained about 10 lbs. I switched to calisthenics and gained another 20lbs in about a year
One arm muscle ups!! lol
Yo, awesome vid dude, you definitely pointed out some things that are kinda a pet peeve
But bro, you wouldn't believe how calisthenics is popular in my country, Croatia, it's astonishing.
"Problems" with Calisthenics mentioned:
1) Cannot build muscle.
3. Calisthenics does favor lighter people just like gymnastics or swimming
4.
5. Calisthenics is very popular in NYC because they invested in equipment decades ago. I think people avoid chins and pulls out of shame they can't do one perfect rep.
NYC is a perfect example because I'm sure these street workouts got popular from there.
2) That's the problem with weight lifting, builds only muscle but no functionality.
cannot build muscle???? are you crazy
Lol not true
Im only on calisthenics (Begginer) and already put on 4 extra kilos and gained alot of muscle in just 4 months. Still have a long way to go, not looking like Austin Dunham, but am surely stronger. :D Just keep consistent, eat well and enough, and progress from time to time with the same workout Till youre a pro at it and have to change it again.
I got my 13 year old brother doing calisthenics for almost a year He looks 15 now with a 8 pack
I'm getting into calisthenics because I want to have a great body and muscle control not because it's "mainstream" like the gym. Great video man.
Great video man but I’m not going to lie that title got me a little worried
Im 12 and from everything i heard i choose calisthenics with 100% confidence i just love to controll my body. Like i had a so big milestone if i managed a skill. Im the most proud for the L-sit it looks so cool. I too can frogstand and some others and i am working on the handstand, that is my goal
Calisthenics all the way!!
Reel Fitness word
Regarding being too heavy/fat for calisthenics...apply regressions, which make the exercises easier and reduces how much weight you're moving, and how much work the joints and muscles have to do. Then you progress by reducing how many regressions you utilize, and then start adding on progressive changes. My problem was finding a good list of regressions/progressions to adapt the exercises to my needs. I finally found an excellent list "Seven Ways to Scale Any Exercise" in Chapter 3 of "Your Body is Your Barbell" by Gaddour, and was finally able to start calisthenics training.
Mans heard you say these in your other vids
Good vid tho 🔥
treyerim you get me tho blood
Austin Dunham, Chris Heria of Thenx... The best Calisthenics channels byfar! Austin Dunham... The only channel you’ll need
I train calisthenics as my conditioning work, but let's be real, deadlifting over 5 is the best rush lol.
DADDY - LONG NECK PEANUT BUTTER BABY mhh do ups down deads
You aint deadlifting shit 😂😂😂
Getting your first one arm pull up is the sickest rush imo
Spinning muscle up! You will shut down any gym or park lol! All eyes on you.
Leon Henning lol I'm weakkk bruh😂😂😂
Nice video man! I agree with you and I really hate that some people think that weights are for being seriois and bodyweight training is just for messing around.
In Europe, I feel like nobody knows what callisthenics is. Most of my friends are to lazy to work out and think I am weird because I do callisthenics, .....sad noises.....
True that, it's kinda chill though when the cali bars are empty
@@21xxx21 best feeling ever
@Lawrence 02 Same. Me and my friend were only one that i know that train callisthenics or weightlifting it doesn't matter. And i broke my leg ond vaccation and i am recovering 2 years and it still going😔
Man you're right about people not taking advantage of bodyweight exercises here in the US. In my gym i have never once seen anyone do weighted pullups, chin ups, dips etc.. I really want to be someone who makes a calisthenics mainstream along with bodybuilding. I think both create an awesome physique when used together
First🔥🔥🔥🔥sauce squad
I totally agree bro. Great vid! 💪🏾
I thought you would say about the legs
You can build muscle with calisthenics. If you treat the one-armed pushup, one-armed pull up, and weighted pistol squat like the big three compound lifts (bench, deadlift, squat), you can get some serious mass gains.
Notification squuaadd
Good stuff. Keepin' it real!!
Just started yesterday bro
How’s it going?
Love this channel 🙌🏼
so, basically, There is no problem with calisthenics!!!!
Basically
Here in greece where this kind of training started ! Now is getting really famous! Calisthenics gyms are opening and more people want to start calisthenics! Really happy about that! Sorry for my english...

Wts sup huge fan. Just started doing body weight training, it’s hard but I enjoy it. Thanks for the tips.
That last problem is my problem also. Nearly always when I say to someone that I do calisthenics workouts to gain muscle they are like what. I know only one person in my city who knows what is calisthenics.
JLethic say bodyweight instead its the word they dont get im sure they have heard of a push up
A L.s yea but my point is that more people need know about calisthenics.
Thanks, man! I really appreciate this.
JLethic lol you only got 15 subs and your last video was 3 months ago
I've always struggled with Caleistichics workouts. I want to get better at doing them, but it's been a hassle staying motivated to do them.. . I do have to give this dude props on how good he is at doing them..

7th comment//nice vid👍🏾 Austin
Yeah austin is right, if the exercise becomes easier, make it harder and your diet should be on point
what about legs??
sissy squats, glute ham raise, bridges;if they get easy try them with one limb. Also plyo works great
pistol squats
9999rockey the gym and weights will be way better for legs. But hill sprints and Jump circuits are great. Like a 5x 30 second jumps including lunge jumps distance frog jumps ect (will be brutal)
squat ofc, getting easy? do pistol squats
Superset glute ham raises with squats for high volume even the fat bodybuilders will crumble with that.
nice video Austin I have been watching your videos for about a year now and your definitely making GAINZ keep it up bro!
*Real problems with calisthenics:*
Easy to get muscle imbalances
Underdeveloped muscle groups like legs and lower back
Cocktus You speak of problems, but offer no solutions. So then, it's demotivating what your saying. You should offer some tips to prevent muscle imbalances.
Train in a normal gym... Thought it was obvious enough
Cocktus haha there you have a point, but you did not argue about the fixing of it. Haha
Coming to lead the calesthenic wave with you broski
I do a 40/30/30 Split of training. That is 40% weights, 30% calisthenics and 30% MMA/Boxing. I really enjoy it because you can be a well functioned athlete as well as looking good and its really fun to mix them together in a great workout 😀
Let em know! Good info bruv!
Keep it up.
Totally agree about spreading the word. Calisthenics is a great workout.
Austin with your strength, you have to give American Ninja Warrior a shot. Definitely would like to see you compete
I started calisthenics when I was obese. All you have to do is progressions. Plus, a lot of bodyweight movements are compound movements, which is great for burning fat along the way.
