This topic is a bit controversial, and I expect some people to disagree with me. However remember, I'm just stating what I've noticed and my personal experience! If you don't agree do not take it to heart! Stick to your method and keep training. Because at the end of the day... we're all makin gainzz!
Austin Dunham I totally agree with everything in this video, since changing diet and starting calisthenics my fat percentage has gone way down, my abs have come out and I've gained weight in muscle :) and also there's compound exercises which are almost all of them which means you're working things when you don't even realise. I could go on all day haha but brilliant video Austin, keep them up you're one of my favourite youtubers
Austin Dunham And what do you think if i use deadlifts and calistenics? cause i want to go to a gym and use both, if i write bad this please dont be rude cause im from latinoamerica, by the way, thanks!!! i hope you can answer me
Hey bro real question. I'm about 6'0 and 170 pounds. I'm pretty damn skinny. I want to build strength and muscle. If I work out for 30 mins three times a week, (Mostly AMRAP circuits for legs, arms and mixed), will I get my desired result?
Sebastian Cavero Mendieta don't know if you're wanting Austin to reply or anyone but in my opinion that is fine, I don't see why you can't or shouldn't combine calisthenics and deadlifting :)
+Tyedric Hill eat a lot of shit. don't worry about abs at first when your trying to gain weight. hone your abs but don't worry about cutting for flab until you bulk
If you want quick gains, and are new to body training...go with calisthenics for 3 months. Your body will changed greatly in this time. If you want to continue with muscle growth, go with weight training for 6 months. Then, do a 70/30. 70% weight training, 30% calisthenics. Both are the key to body shaping. Now if you want to look like a lot of these guys on youtube bulked and ripped to Hell...take steroids.
Cyberhawkzz noice tips but weighted calisthenics are better once you reach the level where regular movements are too easy, but calisthenics is superior in my opinion because you’re shredded and very flexible and more coordinated and athletic, being able to effortlessly move your body weight with pushes and pulls and everything will help you more than being a bulky fucker, look at all professional fighters, nothing but calisthenics, and professional athletes do a mix of both, BUT athletes also do agility training etc etc so they’re still mobile, these swole asf dudes you see out in public punch slow asf, more than likely don’t even run so their staminas low, they just swole asf to be swole, a regular dude who does calisthenics vs a regular dude who merely lifts weight, the calisthenics person is built for survival more, plenty dudes can lift 300+ but cannot even do 3 chin ups in a row, just imagine seeing a swole dude hanging from a cliff and cannot pull himself up
jeremy soffen both are good and both have their limitations in my experience. However you can build a amazing body with either one. I just believe a combination of both is superior to either or.
don't believe that you can bulk fast with calisthenics ? Haha that's nonesense. No need for arguments, check my instagram for proof. Same username like I got here
Dude, I just did my first calisthenic based workout. I totally agree with the sweating! I NEVER sweat during weights unless I’m moving quickly, but I’m sweating buckets now!
Calisthenics is better than lifting weights in my opinion. you’re gaining mobility, and more than likely stretching, correcting your posture in the process, Creating a stronger core, opposed to working on individual muscles. Weight lifting is great for building muscle, but you’re going to feel better doing calisthenics, increasing than just muscle mass. It’s common sense, you’re literally strengthening your core, opposed to using a bench for support while focusing on one muscle at a time. You have to learn how to support your body, and it’s weight, naturally shaping your body into what it naturally is meant to be. Weights just seem artificial, and weight lifters normally aren’t as quick, and agile as calisthenics trainers. Just my opinion. You can skip paying for gym membership, you local park can become your new gym (getting fresh air, and freedom to workout without a price tag).
DavePazz you’re absolutely spot on! I used to have a weight training class back in high school, but I would never use the weights. I boxed outside of school, trained my body in calisthenics workouts, ran, and meditated. My gym teacher would assume I would slack off since I was normally talking to girls instead of lifting. Little did he know, I would spend 2hrs after school training. Come time for a max lift, I was surpassing most of the students in my class, also being one of the leanest, skinner guys. I was able to push my max without stressing the rest of my body, seeing how calisthenics helped muscles work together. I suppose it’s a preference of what you want. I prefer to be lean, and cut. But some want big muscles, my only tip to guys with big muscles is, stretch because you’re only straining yourself in the end. .. and don’t skip leg day.
I agree well said makes u so much more nimble if ur into boxing/kickboxing....i call this type of training the fighters training for ex Bruce Lee did mostly body weight exercises for the flexibility and mobility he had lighter weight UFC fighters also utilize this training, end of day it all comes down to preference ....would a person rather be big and bulky or thin ripped and lean with flexibility ! But I see as most body builders get old all that mass turns to loose skin and flab and looks horrid imo
Ed Ness I agree. Ever since I've been calisthenics I have become more flexible! I have ranges of motion that I never had before. Also my back feels much better and I have no pain.
Jordan Muns Yes, but there are more in bodyweight. Having said that, look at a guy like AD. He is lean and cut. He looks like an MMA fighter a Navy seal or a pro soccer player. Not bulky and musclebound.
Jordan Muns Weight training never worked for me. I know with bodyweight training the muscles have more time under tension that works them harder and gives one a more ripped defined look. 90% of weight lifters don't seem to realize that. I prefer the lean defined look instead of the bulky heavy look that most weight lifters have. Not all but most.
2021 quarantine literally 4 years after this video is made and everything he says is true. I been doing calisthenics for 4 -5 months and never lifted a single weight in over a year and I'm pretty jacked.
You inspired me to pursue callisthenics about a year ago and I have never looked back, I have seen major improvements in my health and my fitness, and obviously I have become stronger and more aesthetic and I feel better for it physically and mentally.
Carter Its all about preference really. some people just like calisthenics more than weights. yes both would be better, but it all comes down to doing what you'll stick with the most. I only do calisthenics because I just got bored with lifting and felt I never really got anything out of it.
dark wolf Calisthenics gets you more leaner than lifting. I find i don't get more muscle development with it unlike lifting but I sure as hell cut down real quick. This guy also does a split routine with calisthenics whereas I do full body with both it and lifting. That in of itself is a different animal for both strength, hypertrophy and cutting down fat.
Carter gotta disagree with you bud, neither will get you more " leaner" or "bulkier than the other. your diet is the most important factor when it comes to building muscle and mass. Calisthenics if done PROPERLY will get you just as much effective results as weights believe or not, and Here is why. for one your muscles don't know the difference between weights nor calisthenics. As long as you apply time under tension and progressive overload with calisthenics you will indeed gain mass. And yes this is backed up by research and has been debunked numerous of times by multiple scientific evidence/studies ( look it up) Many people don't progress with bodyweight exercises, because they aren't progressively overloading the muscles nor applying enough time under tension. most of these skinny dudes you see doing calisthenics are just focusing on tricks, spinning their asses off in the air, doing too many reps, lacking diet and not focusing on strict form.
dark wolf Yeah of course but the thing is These days I use calisthenics mainly for conditioning cause like austin said, i get more burned out doing it then weights in an hour. Combining both is really beneficial just like liss and hiit interval training, and eating carbs based on how Intense my workout is. Tbh the whole diet thing i've gotten so loose with it that I just eat listening to my body and I've made tremendous progress doing only full body workouts because of this new eating behavior.
dark wolf you are so right i thought i was the only one who think the same way that u do , i went from lifting weights to bodyweight exercises with the same amount of set's and reps i used to do with weights and tell u the truth its a whole lot better and i got amazing pump than i ever would in a gym , plus u recover more faster and there for can train a body part twice a week. btw foods stayed the same bodybuilding style ! let me know what's ur thoughts on the matter
I been doing Calisthenics for about a few months now. Ive bulked up a lot sincr doing push ups and pull ups. The thing is in order to bulk up on a Calisthenics regiment you have to eat a lot more than you may be use to. Ive gained 10lbs and lost a nice bit of body fat.
I think you see better overall definition from calisthenics as you lean out because it requires far more stabilization. When done strict with slow tempo/pause training, everything is firing. Also if you use a weight vest or belt with added weight, you can still achieve progressive overload and build max strength. Due to the stabilization/coordination challenge of calisthenics, I'd say that a great combo is weighted calisthenics for upper and traditional lifting for lower body. Best of both.
He's right, when I was lifting weights I was like 25% body fat and when I started chalistenics I got to 5% bodyfat, and ya I eat as much as I want now, before I was eating only 2500 calories.
I think both are useful. It';s about finding what works for you. I do both, although learning calisthenics and gymnastic movements are slowly becoming more appealing to me. If you find an approach that you love and work hard at it, the physique will come along with your passion of progressing within your chosen discipline.
Nofap is bullshit. I don't get why people like to hype it up so much. I'm guessing it's because people are too lazy to do any real research to know if what they're doing is crap or not.
@@GoyFromFinland bet you wont make it to 90 days, benefits are real after 100 I stopped counting won‘t go back to fapping ever again. Fapping makes you weak fam
you can find a basic calesthenic routine too do on google, also here on youtube you can find hiit cardio type workouts about 30 mins ea, for when you want too do cardio in your routine search up "millionaire hoy" he makes alot of hiit workouts ive tried a few and they kicked my ass.
I think that the reason why calisthenic athletes are lean is because lean people do calisthenics. Bulky people don't bother with it they just lift. Just like basketball. Basketball doesn't change people's height much. Tall people play basketball that's why most basketball players are tall
I've gained weight doing calisthenics. In a year I gained 15 lbs. from 115 to 130ish. Still skinny tho, but I'm cut nicely. My goal is at least 140 lbs. by the next 2-3months or so!
For most guys your never going to be the biggest dude around. But no matter where you stand, you can be the most fit and shredded dude around. Story of my life and I love it. Plus people are more friendly to you.
While you aren't wrong with everything you said regarding calisthenics, had you trained in a manner that worked to achieve your goals while weightlifting, I'm confident you would have seen the results you wanted. It's just that there's many different training styles regarding weightlifting and had you been on a program designed to meet your goals, you would've been more than satisfied with your results. Calisthenics are great, all types of training are great for their individual purposes, just don't forget that there are many shortcomings to each type as well.
In my opinion both are beneficial. Free weights is good for building larger amounts of muscle more easily where as calisthenics are better for functional movement. Calisthenics is good for compound movements and full body workouts where as free weights is good at isolating a single muscle group.
This was really helpful for me to know because I have been doing calisthenics for a while now but have been worried about gaining to much weight since I am also big into long distance running. With distance running, I am told not to gain much weight, but I want to get shredded and be able to do all the tricks. Thanks for all your tips!
Dude awesome video! I do agree, I have been doing calisthenics for a few years now and as you said diet is truly one of the important things when it comes to getting ripped. Your stuff is inspirational as well. Keep doing your thang man in the calisthenics game bro.
Dislike man, I love calisthenics but you are completely wrong. 1. In calisthenics you burn more calories: False, in a good weightlifting workout with 4-6 basic exercices + 2 accesory exercices you can burn 500-1000+Kcal. 2. In calisthenics you sweat: Sweat doesn't mean fat loss (First thing you should learn in fitness). Anyway it depends on your workout intensity. 3. Multiarticular movements: Deadlift, Weighted pullups, Bench press, Weighted dips, military press, Bar Squat, Hip trust, pendley row... Come on!!! There are lots of multiarticular movements in weightlifting!!!
Adri MG a push up activates abs, hip flexer, and quads while a bench press activates none of those regions. They obviously both activate the same areas around the shoulder and chest. Sounds like the pushup is more affective all round
Deegs Deg true but people move to weight training from calisthenics because Progressive Overload can be applied easier. you can only get so strong from pure body weight
Deegs Deg effective for what? dont compare then the chest activation in a 100kgs bench press vs a push up... Anyway, in rows, deadlifts, pullups and many more exercices the activation of the core is high as well.
I just watched this because my son Kale left it open on my computer, lol. Great video! And I agree with you. I am a 44 year old woman. I do only body weight exercises, primarily yoga, Pilates and dance. I throw in resistance bands and small weights (no more than 3 pounds) a couple of times a week. People marvel all the time at how "ripped" I am. Of course following a plant based diet helps considerably. But, like you said, I am always incorporating multiple muscle groups with every exercise, I raise my heart rate when I exercise and sweat a lot. :) When I handstand at the gym, young guys try to copy me and they are shocked when they can't do it when a 112 pound (5 ' 4") 44 year old woman can. ;) I much prefer the mobility and overall fitness body weight training offers versus the bulk of body building. To each his/her own of course. :) (P.S. 10% body fat might be great for a guy, but for a woman, that's too low.) Peace!
@@Dailykaleroy 🤣🤣🤣 when I was typing that I had two things on my mind. 1) should I type this? i mean the guy might not even know his mom did this yet.. Am I really going to expose her? And 2) Sheesh this guy must be trolling. Your mom a real chad fr
So I got hurt not too long ago from weight lifting. I was grooving too! I unfortunately pinched a nerve and couldnt walk for months. Started doing yoga to get my strength back. Started to do calisthenics instead and man I think hes right haha. Been doing this shit all quarantine and totally worth it! I'm a bigger boi too that's just started. Itll be worth it one rep at a time!
I do both. Bench then curls then pushups. After that I drop down and do core exercises sit ups, bicycle kicks, bus drivers until my arms and chest are ready again, then I do more bench followed by chin up followed by plate exercises/dumbell curls, then go back to core again and repeat. It's a non stop intense workout would highly recommend.
Hey Bro, You probably won't see this but I'll say it anyway. I wouldn't say I have started calisthenics but I'm getting into it sort of. I do 100 push ups a day and try do 200 squats. Is this a good base to start off whilst doing school. I want to focus on getting more endurance and ripped. Thanks so much if you reply.

I think calisthenics is better for that lean athletic look, but lifting weights will allow you to build more muscle mass. That's why I incorporate both. Pullups are my favorite exercise of all time, easily. Strapping 100 lbs between your legs and lifting your own bodyweight up, it feels so badass nothing else besides maybe the overhead press comes close.
what do you mean you wont gain weight, I've seen people put massive muscle on with calisthenics. just look at Greg from simnett Nutrition on RUclips. he got jacked Doing calisthenics.
Austin Dunham you said you would get ripped and that your muscle comp has changed doing calisthenics but that your still the same weight. I don't think you said you can put on mass, which is what I was pointing out.
you can build muscle with calesthenics, but the truth of the matter is lifting weights will get you much bigger much faster and thats a fact, most people that choose calesthenics as their training of choice do it because they like the idea of your body weight and a bar its like a training lifestyle, For pure aesthetics lifting weights and cardio are the best bet
I lost 20 pounds in 4 months doing calisthenics man. I dropped from around 158 to 137lbs. I feel stronger and can do more pull ups, push ups, and now have better abs too
Weight training seems to have more scope for progressive overload whereas calisthenics seems to have more scope for isometric training. If you are losing body fat in calisthenics your body will be lighter and therefore you are lifting less weight. The exercise becomes easier. You should add weight in calisthenics to make it more challenging and progressive. Use weighted jackets, ankle weights or hang weights from a weight belt. It is all about putting the muscle under (increased) amounts of stress, time under tension and isometric or eccentric training that creates micro tears in muscle fibers. Beginners would need to start with simple versions of the exercises. Lat pull down versus pull up bar, assisted machines versus complete body weight, Use of resistance bands to take some body weight off exercises.
Quite vague claims on all points, except for the diet, that is unquestionable. Everything depends on the intensity and volume of your workouts. Stuff like weight, reps, sets, REST TIMES, and so on. Since you only use your bodyweight as resistance, you can't really overload progressively like you would with weights, so you don't gain any weight nor strength, you just get endurance and burn calories. All depends on the goal here! Nobody said we want to be 200 lb of pure muscle, but I feel thats always the underlying message and nobody says it outloud. BRB deadlifts and pullups.
SoulBladeM It's interesting how you said that Austins points were "vague" and then ending up with some real fucking bro science that doesn't even make sense 😂
SoulBladeM I don't think you have ever done Bodyweight training or you would not be spouting such nonsense. And I bet you don't look like AD. I used to lift weights and never broke a sweat or got ripped. I am not like AD but I much more ripped from Bodyweight than lifting. Plus there are always more difficult ways to do almost every bodyweight exercise. For example there are at least 25 ways to do push-ups and I can only think of one way to do a bench press. I personally do about 6 different push ups. Look how ripped Navy Seals are in BUDS training. They don't have time to stand around in a gym lifting weights they are doing push-ups, pull-ups, Burpee's, shoulder dips, and lots of cardio running and swimming. In the gym I go to I would say 80 % of the dudes using weights are not using them correctly and year after year they look the same and are still using the same exercises and weights with no appreciable progress. And, almost none of them can do pull-ups like I can. And a lot of days I go in and the first thing I do are 100 pull-ups or a bare minimum of 50. I seem to be one of the few guys in the gym they can even do them at all and do them correctly. Same with shoulder dips. It's a no brainer when an old guy like me can be much more defined.
"You can't implement progressive overload with calisthenics" Just not true. Try searching for any decent calisthenic routine, there's many different kinds of pushups, pullups, utilizing time under tension etc.
Thanks for the information bro. I have been weight lifting and little bit of calisthenics. But I'm looking to look ripped so I have decided to go with calisthenics!
yeah your right. fat loss is simply a matter of burning more calories then you consume. As to the claim that bodyweight training vs using weights well that's a very broad statement, I understand why people tend to think there choice of workout style is superior however I think it's good to have an open mind and be content in that fact that you don't know everything and can learn. For example doing standing barbel overhead press could help someone improve there handstand pushup. anyway thanks for the video, peace.
c note he's stated in previous videos that you can apply the same techniques (reps and sets) as weightlifting to calisthenics and get similar results. as things get easier, there are progressions. hope this helps
You can still bulk with calisthenics I think he means that if you want to do the elite calisthenic exercise such as planches and back levers its much more optimal to be at a lower bodyfat percentage. So if you really wanna get jacked with calisthenics just stick with the basic moves ( Pullups, pushups, squats, bridges etc)and progress from there.
The word calisthenics comes from the ancient Greek words kállos (κάλλος), which means "beautiful" (to emphasize the aesthetic pleasure that derives from the perfection of the human body), and sthenos (σθένος), meaning "strength" (great mental strength, courage, strength, and determination). It is the art of using one's body weight as resistance in order to develop physique. The practice was recorded in use in Ancient Greece, including the armies of Alexander the Great and the Spartans at the Battle of Thermopylae.
@@jayno858, that's like asking "how can a 85kg person be built to squat 100kg?". Practice, man, practice. I weigh 82kg at 6'1 and couldn't do a single pullups for the longest time, so I used progressions to build up to it. Negatives and half-reps are your friends. Try to get about 15-20 reps in one day. Now I can do about 8 in a row and it's going up.
HERE IS THE BEST CALISTHENICS WORKOUT: 100 SIT UPS!!!! 100 SQUATS!!!! 100 PUSH UPS!!!! 10 KM RUN EVERY DAYYY!!!!! EAT A BANANA AT BREAKFAST! THIS IS THE WAY TO BECOME STRONG!!!!
Sorry, but just from reading the title I can tell you that you are 100% wrong. Calisthenics is good for beginners or people that can't afford a gym membership. If you don't belong in either of those 2 criteria, there is absolutely no reason for you not to lift some weights if you want to look better and feel better. Oh and btw just about every calisthenics-only youtuber i see have lagging medial and rear delts, which fucks your posture up. Also from doing only push-ups and dips for chest, their lower chest gets far too developed compared to the rest of their body. No rows or deadlifts also results in extremely wide lats, and absolutely no thickness to the back. Not trying to put you down, but there is absolutely no reason to not do free weights in 2017 where there is a gym at the corner of almost every street. I don't even want to begin talking about the "staying lean from calisthenics" bro-science bullshit. Body fat completely depends on your caloric intake and whether or not you are in a positive or negative energy balance. I used to be one of those calisthenics-only guys for 2 years when I started lifting. But after incorporating free-weights into my routine, I can speak from first hand experience that it is far superior to calisthenics only.
DavePazz A good high-interval resistance training program should consist of both weight training and calisthenics. Doing only one or the other is an extremely narrow minded way of thinking. Here's one example, Ivan Markioli, one of the BarBrothers. He's massive and his physique is extremely impressive from body weights alone, but due to too much emphasis on the front delt and no rear delt work, his shoulders and neck hitch in. It's painfully obvious on him in particular So what exactly is calisthenics for? I'm not sure what kind of special snowflake you perceive yourself to be, but 99% of these calisthenics-only guys on the internet are just ignorant kids who just started resistance-training and want to look better and feel better. You have to be stubborn as a goat not to acknowledge that weight training is superior to calisthenics in every aspect. What exactly is your purpose of doing calisthenics? I'm sure you're not a gymnast. If you're argument is that you do calisthenics purely because it makes you feel good, then you should look into doing aerobic exercises. Ever heard of a runners high? It releases a lot more endorphins than doing push-ups and pull-ups alone. The whole point of doing resistance training is to change the way your body looks and get stronger. All i'm saying is, if you're going to put the time and effort into it, you might as well get the best bang for your buck.. I see all these dumbass videos on my youtube like "TOP 3 BEST CALISTHENICS WORKOUTS FOR BICEPS" and then I see these skinny dudes talking out of their asses about some curl on a pull-up bar.. Just get a dumbbell and DO A FUCKING CURL lmao
Anaerobic exercises are for your skeletal muscles, aerobic exercises is for your cardiac muscles (your heart). There really is no other way around this. The exception is if you're a gymnast or an athlete Back to my point. It's 2017. There is a gym at every corner of the street. There is a plethora of research that consistently backs up that resistance training with both calisthenics and weight-training is better for you. Doing only one or the other is narrow minded as fuck. End of story
You told me calisthenics isn't bodybuilding. What I was getting at is that if you are doing an anaerobic exercise then you are doing it to build your skeletal muscle. I understand you don't like the "bodybuilding" stigma or label, but at the end of the day if you are doing any anaerobic exercise, you are bodybuilding. If you methodically build a regimented calisthenics schedule like the guy in this video with specific rep ranges and sets for each specific exercise then you are clearly trying to build muscle. Again what am I getting at? If you put the time and effort into something, then get the best bang for your buck. Go to your gym, and lift some fucking weights. If you set up an experiment with 2 test subjects of similar height, body structure, BMR, and have one perform calisthenics only for a year while the other incorporates both, then the subject who includes weight training in his workouts will make the other subject look like he doesn't even lift. This is because with weight lifting you can progressively overload much better and faster.
Yeah that kind of bodybuilding is a little too much. When you turn an activity like working out, which is supposed to be healthy for you, into an unhealthy obsession or lifestyle it gets pretty lame. The video is titled "Why Calisthenics Will Get You Ripped Faster than Weight Training". Based off your last comment I think we came to an agreement that this is simply not true. It seems our discussion went completely off tangent, but if you're arguing that the only rational for doing calisthenics-only is personal preference or enjoyment, then there's really not much more I can argue. Nice talking to you though buddy, hope everything works out for ya
you must haven't seen Hannibal for king and the rest of those guys who only do calisthenics. you just gotta do more reps. you need to be doing 25-50 reps and at least 5 sets. 10 to be a beast. +Alex E
Nothing to really base this off, but calisthenic workouts tend to require longer sets as one progresses. A weightlifter may add a couple lbs to the bar, but a 3 rep max attempt will take the same amount of time to complete as his strength increases. So in this case, the tension increases and the time stays the same. As a calisthenics athlete progresses from doing 6 pull-ups to doing 20 pull-ups, the amount of time per set increases. Your body weight isn’t changing in between sets so time increases but tension stays the same. Progressive overload can occur in both scenarios, but the amount of LACTATE generated is dependent on the amount of time per set. A set of pull-ups for 45+ seconds generates a significantly larger amount of lactate as a byproduct than a set of rows where you hit a 3-6 rep max (trying to improve strength). This increased lactate in turn (through a casecade of events involving growth hormone, etc) spikes levels of IGF des. The amount of IGF des released correlates with the amount of lactate given off as a byproduct. When the igf des reaches the igf receptors in the adipose (fat) tissue, ketosis occurs (right ?) This is just my theory, someone comment back and lemme know if I was at least on the right track.
DavePazz so.. he didnt menion that u can get more shredded in weight lifting. and it depends how ur doing those exercises, and besides - FUCK OFF I DIDNT COMMENT FOR YOU
At the end of the day it's all about doing what you enjoy doing. We've come to a day and age where everyone wants to take the shortcuts and not put in the hard work. Do what you desire to do. And if you want to get ripped fast be in a caloric deficit and do some sort of fun cardio. Easy as that
Both workouts great, bulking and cutting depends on ur diet, if ure not eating enough for ur daily nutrition needs then u wont see any gains or just a little. Its just as simple as that, so long ur body have resistance, pressure, muscles will pump out and trained, and develop during recovery process, and the result will show after recovery.
it's actually true , I mean good genetics are a bit to blame but I've done inconsistent weight and calisthenics training for 2 years and I look really good. my brother started doing consistent calisthenics from 9th to 12th grade and by 10th grade he looked peak 💪
I would say calisthenics get you cut or ripped faster than free weights. It's simple really chin ups for example is a compound exercise. Because you're working your biceps but you're also engaging many other muscles as well in the movement. So obviously you use more energy overall as a result burn more calories and body fat. Free weights isolate the bicep when doing curls. So you're only working your bicep and forearm. Usually you're sitting down or standing still. That doesn't exert nearly as much energy because only your arm is doing the work vs your whole upper body with pull ups.
It's not about weights or calisthenics, its about people, you could go to the gym and work the big compound movements that burn alot more calories like squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull ups, overhead press etc. but people usually choose isolation exercises because they don't require that much technique and are easy to perfom. But obviously calisthenics don't give that many options for isolation work so that's a good thing for getting ripped faster but isolation work is also pretty useful i.e when you're injured.
"As you can see.."
Disappears
lol
😂😂😂😂😂😂
lololol
just like my dad😂
Exactly what I was thinking
I’d rather be ripped rather than bulked
Az I’d rather learn proper english! 😂
DontGetPostered _ that cold 🤭🤭
I’d rather be both
DontGetPostered _ there’s nothing technically wrong with any of the English there
Actually he is right. Being ripped is better than being all bulking. Being ripped is more sexy to the ladies. And that's all that matters
Cyberhawkzz lmao thanks for the info!
Cyberhawkzz thanks for the tips bro, gonna try it
Cyberhawkzz weighted calistenics are the besttt
Bullshit
Cyberhawkzz noice tips but weighted calisthenics are better once you reach the level where regular movements are too easy, but calisthenics is superior in my opinion because you’re shredded and very flexible and more coordinated and athletic, being able to effortlessly move your body weight with pushes and pulls and everything will help you more than being a bulky fucker, look at all professional fighters, nothing but calisthenics, and professional athletes do a mix of both, BUT athletes also do agility training etc etc so they’re still mobile, these swole asf dudes you see out in public punch slow asf, more than likely don’t even run so their staminas low, they just swole asf to be swole, a regular dude who does calisthenics vs a regular dude who merely lifts weight, the calisthenics person is built for survival more, plenty dudes can lift 300+ but cannot even do 3 chin ups in a row, just imagine seeing a swole dude hanging from a cliff and cannot pull himself up
I think a combination of both is best. However lifting weights is better for putting on muscle and tracking progress
king nick yep confining oneself to only one particular discipline inhibits potential progress
king nick you mean building muscle size right? it isn't exactly the best way to be stronger.
yes he means muscle size
jeremy soffen both are good and both have their limitations in my experience. However you can build a amazing body with either one. I just believe a combination of both is superior to either or.
for muscle size weight lifting is definitely superior, I do believe that calisthenics will make someone lose fat and get ripped faster.
it will get you ripped fast af. it's true, but it won't get you bulked fast
Nothing can. Only steroids.
don't believe that you can bulk fast with calisthenics ? Haha that's nonesense. No need for arguments, check my instagram for proof. Same username like I got here
Bulking depends on your diet, so does cutting.
LMAO your small, your comment made it sound like you were jacked.
That's nt true u'll easily bulk up if U do weighted calisthenics!!!! :)
Ed Ness What's your routine? I want to get into it and need some advice. I actually agree with this whole concept. Send me your email if you'd like!
And you can’t really fuck up your back or ruin posture with calisthenics if you aren’t careful.
Weight training
Trackable, Good for mass, Muscle isolation
Calisthenics
Shredded, Always compund movements, hard to get muscle imbalances
This is true! I was never ripped lifting weights. You burn more calories and sweat more doing compound body movements!
Jordan Muns Yes, but there are more in bodyweight. Having said that, look at a guy like AD. He is lean and cut. He looks like an MMA fighter a Navy seal or a pro soccer player. Not bulky and musclebound.
Jordan Muns It never worked for me and I don't see it much and I don't see thousands of lien weightlifters on the Internet either.
same here dude, and i like doing bodyweight because I have seen fantastic results better than lifting weight!!
Jordan Muns When you look like and in MA fighter, A.D., or a Navy seal then you can talk to me. I am sticking with bodyweight training.
Calisthenics all day. So many different ways to train. Definitely way harder if your doing it correctly.besides, bulk ain't all that. Great video bro.
Your right bulk aint shit plus its slows you down in certain activities
@@claudiomonreal8729 Best to be in between somewhere and be incredibly explosive and strong. Look up Michael Vasquez you'll see what i mean.
2021 quarantine literally 4 years after this video is made and everything he says is true. I been doing calisthenics for 4 -5 months and never lifted a single weight in over a year and I'm pretty jacked.
Which exercises did you do
You inspired me to pursue callisthenics about a year ago and I have never looked back, I have seen major improvements in my health and my fitness, and obviously I have become stronger and more aesthetic and I feel better for it physically and mentally.
I agree but doing both will lead to building muscle and getting lean.
You're lying. You were never 5% body fat in your life.
I think both are useful. It';s about finding what works for you. I do both, although learning calisthenics and gymnastic movements are slowly becoming more appealing to me. If you find an approach that you love and work hard at it, the physique will come along with your passion of progressing within your chosen discipline.
I’m trying to lose weight after bulking. I’m thinking about doing more cardio and calisthenics and this video has helped a lot!
I'm going to start, I've had the same problem. My lower abs never pop as much as my upper abs. I'm gonna consider this so I can get my full set
Calisthenics + nofap = perfect
@Ale when you do nofap it increases testosterone which can help when gaining muscle mass (or so they say).
Yep I’m on 7 days semen retention
Nofap is bullshit. I don't get why people like to hype it up so much. I'm guessing it's because people are too lazy to do any real research to know if what they're doing is crap or not.

I think that the reason why calisthenic athletes are lean is because lean people do calisthenics. Bulky people don't bother with it they just lift. Just like basketball. Basketball doesn't change people's height much. Tall people play basketball that's why most basketball players are tall
Caliathletic Fitness not true bro
It’s cause bulky people are too heavy to do it lol
I started off doing callisthenics at 92kg after getting board of doing weights, and now after 1 year ive gone down to 81kg and I'm ripped
Caliathletic Fitness Basketball doesnt make you taller
I've gained weight doing calisthenics. In a year I gained 15 lbs. from 115 to 130ish. Still skinny tho, but I'm cut nicely. My goal is at least 140 lbs. by the next 2-3months or so!
When going on the right diet and workout you can get 12 kg with free weight. Not hating or something , how is your progress?
I like your explanation man. I have been considering calisthenics instead of weight training.
As you can see now, *walks back into darkness* xD
For most guys your never going to be the biggest dude around. But no matter where you stand, you can be the most fit and shredded dude around. Story of my life and I love it. Plus people are more friendly to you.
Ya I have 2 upper abs showing too the bottom never shows
It's working for me..im 56 and I work out on bowflex, and do lots of pushups..and I can see and feel the difference..
This video definitely helped I have those two top abs showing too. But now I know how to get the stubborn lower abs to show. Thanks bro
This was really helpful for me to know because I have been doing calisthenics for a while now but have been worried about gaining to much weight since I am also big into long distance running. With distance running, I am told not to gain much weight, but I want to get shredded and be able to do all the tricks. Thanks for all your tips!
I like doing calisthenics for compound exercises and weights for isolation exercises
Adri MG spot on bro hope he reads this
Adri MG a push up activates abs, hip flexer, and quads while a bench press activates none of those regions.

+b.cage Of course you will put on muscle. I even mention how I did! Did you even watch the video?
Austin Dunham you said you would get ripped and that your muscle comp has changed doing calisthenics but that your still the same weight. I don't think you said you can put on mass, which is what I was pointing out.
b.cage I think you didn't understand man, he said he out on muscle and but didn't gain weight, thus concluding that he lost fat during the process.
He's not big though. He only looks it. He's 5'6" and 145lbs?
you can build muscle with calesthenics, but the truth of the matter is lifting weights will get you much bigger much faster and thats a fact, most people that choose calesthenics as their training of choice do it because they like the idea of your body weight and a bar its like a training lifestyle, For pure aesthetics lifting weights and cardio are the best bet

This is do to you're actually have to stabilize the body through movement through space. Weights are usually stabilized by the equipment.
Hey Austin what if you do both body weight training an gym exercises as bicep curls etc. What would be an expected result???
I lost 20 pounds in 4 months doing calisthenics man. I dropped from around 158 to 137lbs. I feel stronger and can do more pull ups, push ups, and now have better abs too
Hugo Lizardi 137lbs? There is no human male on earth that should aspire to be that skinny
@@user-zy9yg2eu5t I was wrong lol. I weighed myself on the carpet which distorts the results. I actually weigh 158lbs now.
1:05 lol mate, that's exactly what I do when someone wants to see my abs
+SoulBladeM I understand what you're sayin, however your clamis near the middle of your statement is horribly wrong.
"You can't implement progressive overload with calisthenics"
Just not true. Try searching for any decent calisthenic routine, there's many different kinds of pushups, pullups, utilizing time under tension etc.
SoulBladeM Funny thing about your comment is I'm actually 205 and only do calisthenics lol

yeah your right. fat loss is simply a matter of burning more calories then you consume. As to the claim that bodyweight training vs using weights well that's a very broad statement, I understand why people tend to think there choice of workout style is superior however I think it's good to have an open mind and be content in that fact that you don't know everything and can learn.
For example doing standing barbel overhead press could help someone improve there handstand pushup. anyway thanks for the video, peace.

hope this helps
sets and reps in your exercises and you will get big theres alot of ectomorph transformations out there you can watch

I weigh 82kg at 6'1 and couldn't do a single pullups for the longest time, so I used progressions to build up to it. Negatives and half-reps are your friends. Try to get about 15-20 reps in one day. Now I can do about 8 in a row and it's going up.
@@trevbarlow9719 what so a few reps throughout the day?

I truly believe that our body is what God gave us to make us stronger, we just have to learn to use it correctly.
DavePazz
A good high-interval resistance training program should consist of both weight training and calisthenics.
It's painfully obvious on him in particular
So what exactly is calisthenics for?
The exception is if you're a gymnast or an athlete
Back to my point.
When the igf des reaches the igf receptors in the adipose (fat) tissue, ketosis occurs (right ?)
This is just my theory, someone comment back and lemme know if I was at least on the right track.
If you didn't sweat while lifting weights you weren't doing it right
Not everyone sweats easily, especially those with a low body fat %
I never sweat while lifting and I still make gains.

At the end of the day it's all about doing what you enjoy doing. We've come to a day and age where everyone wants to take the shortcuts and not put in the hard work. Do what you desire to do. And if you want to get ripped fast be in a caloric deficit and do some sort of fun cardio. Easy as that
great content, subbed
Both workouts great, bulking and cutting depends on ur diet, if ure not eating enough for ur daily nutrition needs then u wont see any gains or just a little. Its just as simple as that, so long ur body have resistance, pressure, muscles will pump out and trained, and develop during recovery process, and the result will show after recovery.
it's actually true , I mean good genetics are a bit to blame but I've done inconsistent weight and calisthenics training for 2 years and I look really good. my brother started doing consistent calisthenics from 9th to 12th grade and by 10th grade he looked peak 💪
Thank you Austin you are a huge motivator for me 🙌
Calisthenics and weightlifting have their own pros and cons. Both are great ways of training. The best option is to do both of them
Depends on your goals and what you personally enjoy doing the most...
Great video's, love the advice!
Thank you please subscribe :)!
Already did ;)
It's not about weights or calisthenics, its about people, you could go to the gym and work the big compound movements that burn alot more calories like squats, deadlifts, bench press, pull ups, overhead press etc. but people usually choose isolation exercises because they don't require that much technique and are easy to perfom. But obviously calisthenics don't give that many options for isolation work so that's a good thing for getting ripped faster but isolation work is also pretty useful i.e when you're injured.
nice video man!
:) thanks
