This is good info, but a bit confusing in its delivery. You seem to be mixing the term "softbox" and "light" together as if they both refer to the same thing. Of course, they do not. There are lights, and light modifiers. Lights are lights and softboxes are light modifiers. It's not a fair comparison to put the fluorescent light with inaccurate color tint against the other light and say it has anything to do with the modifier. That's one LIGHT vs another LIGHT. The modifier has almost nothing to do with the color comparison. They are just totally different things with different metrics to judge. To those that are new to lighting, I think this video does more to confuse than to educate. I do think you understand the subject. But I think the title, at least, should be modified.
Agreed. It's easy enough to find cheap copies of expensive softboxes, put each on the same light, and have a true comparison of "cheap" versus "expensive" in modifiers.
The light used on the expensive modifier or Softbox should be put in the cheap Softbox and modifier and let’s see.😂 I plan on getting the cheaper Softbox with an expensive light. I cut cost with that as I am on a budget rn.😊
If you want to be objective , remove the grid from the other softbox and then show us the results.I have the so called cheap softbox but with 4 bulbs and it comes with 2 switches that allow me to turn on 2 or 4 bulbs simultaneously. If i want just the light of 1 bulb i unscrew the rest.So far I have not noticed tint problems. You are right about the stands, they are shit, I use different ones more sturdy.
Awesome video! That really looks like a million bucks with the good one. Me I’m still in the touchier light leaning on furniture and muted with a bed sheet stage, but I now have a great understanding of what to save for. Thanks!
thanks you i didnt know honeycombined can make such a difference and always had the lack of not jus bright my face but background get bright tnx a lot :)
Thank you for this video and all of your other amazing content. We've started our own RUclips channel focusing on our world travels. Your content is very helpful in ensuring that we continue to up our game!
My cheap setup has an 80w LED bulb set at 8000K I've got 1/8th strength orange gel sheets that I will use to adjust to the desired warmth. Mine has tabs inside the softbox where I'll be able to rig a secondary diffuser, negating any concerns about it being too bright, while eliminating harshness. The stands they came with are beefier than the $17 stand I just bought for a different light, but these are studio lights, they will not move very far. 20" x27", I got a pair of them using the Amazon 'Used' option for $54! This is crazy.
Light applications made with umbrella ribbing will not last very long. When Apollo came out with the first soft boxes, they had that type of construction and they did not last long under daily usages. Switching to fiberglass ribs was a great new design for lighting applications. Construting some, is a whole other conversation.
I think the cheap one looked alright, and changing the aperture and white balance is probably something you can do under a minute so I see no point in spending too much
You can definitely get a modifier of the same quality as the expensive one and a decent light for much cheaper. Glow ez makes great modifiers (they’re owned by adorama). They compare to westcott and aperture for much cheaper (and they have the quick setup/snap in setup)
In the case of the cheap one the problem is the green tint it has you can counter it in post by shifting to magenta but that also affects any other light in the scene (shifting it to magenta too) and if you start to mask the scene so just the subject is color corrected then you have thrown any of the savings you got with the softbox (being that you will be spending time in post to solve color shifts issues) You don't have to spend much to get a decent softbox that won't shift the color to green or magenta, the advice is to not go with the absolute cheapest stuff, there's is a reason why it is heavily discounted compared to other options..
Somewhere in the middle would make more sense (For RUclips content purposes and not professional videography and photography). Like a model with a dimmer and grid but still using light bulbs...
amazing job. thank you. your video is %100 accurate and sufficient in my opinion. Why do you think it has low view statistics? This should have been watched a couple hundred thousands at least, nothing wrong about it.
Comparing light quality by price is just going to confuse most people. The attributes of the light are based on physics and the dimensions and features of the modifier. Joel Grimes does a good job of explaining what he calls “cracking the code of lighting” in his videos by explaining soft vs hard by modifier size and distance. On the other hand there are companies like LumeCube that try to convince customers that they have somehow gotten around the laws of physics with modern electronics (LED lights and USB rechargable batteries). To put it very simply, photographers really should have a basic understanding of the physics of light…
cool video. now kind of wishing i didn't buy an expensive light and softbox to replace my shit-lights during black friday. Nervous about testing them now.
Great Video and good explanation and it like you said it. Stay with the cheap stuff. What expensive Lights are you using in your video for a referecne and what lights are you using for you Alexa controlled light?
Can you comment on how noisy the fan gets on the Neewer SL 60? Also, what mic are you using in the video (I see you have a decent windshield). Is it a dynamic mic like the SB7, or a Cad E100S Supercardioid Condenser Microphone? I would think both might ignore the fan sound better than other choices. Couldn't find the Neewer Sl 60 but I purchased a Neewer EX-60 (half off for 4th of July sale). In a youtube video test it was about 4 decimals louder than the Goddox. Thanks in advance for your thoughts
What are your camera settings, and are you color grading in post? I believe I have the same camera and lighting setup, but I'm not getting the same results. 🤔
I'm still with those cheap lights and never get why I can't have a dark background well ... okay I see ahah. Would put something on the side of the light to "block" the spill would work ? It makes such a difference ! Thanks for the video !
Hi and thanks for that, it helped a lot! Also, I liked the style of your video! I got one question left: could you post your premium setup/amazon links? I couldn't find the ones you used and it sounded like you use a Neewer AND an Aputure Softbox, so two softboxes, is that right? Thanks & subscribed :)
Hey, thanks for the vid. I have a very small space to shoot. As there is no space (and I use a green screen to allow for a more interesting background), I need a more space saving lighting solution, like a flat LED panel. Do you have a recommendation for such a light that isn't harsh and has some diffusion. Thanks.
No problem! These led panels look amazing value, they offer quite a lot of diffusion and don’t take up too much space! Hopefully this is the kind of thing you are looking for! amzn.to/3IGlg8f
I have just started a video production business for shooting commercials and community videos. I have used the $100 softboxes, but now I need to get something that gets the quality shot that is worth the rates I charge. What light would you recommend?
Hi again, I thought I had already posted but can’t see it in the comments. Just wanted to say I think your videos are really good. Hope your channel grows like it deserves. I have a few questions it would be great Roy ask you. Rather than posting here, I wondered we might be able to do a video call ? If so maybe you could let me know what you charge for 30 mins or per hr ? I am also looking for a little help to improve my channel look, let me know if your interested
Hold on!! Cheap soft box, I have a couple.. I bought dimmers for them $8 each, good dimmable light bulbs 2600 to 4000 lumens, dim as much as you need, as much light as you need..grids are available..

Cheaper softboxes don't make much of a difference. Cheap lights do...
There’s no gear listed in the description? 🤔
I dont get why not lol.... like whats the point if you dont provide the most important thing
I don’t understand how you don’t have a million subscribers. I just bought a $70 light kit from amazon yesterday. Should’ve watched this before
Thank you maybe one day haha! Well I’m sure it will be ok, and if not you can easily return to Amazon 🤗

EXCELLENT explanation, and demonstration of the downside of cheap soft boxes.

nice and straight to the point, I appreciate the non BS approach so much
Extremely useful!!! Great I watched it before I actually buy anything
Indeed, a world of difference. Thank you.
Very helpful comparison thank you. Super useful in comparing the use case of a diffusion panel vs a grid softbox
Thanks a lot! Glad it was helpful!
Ahhhh, I finally get the honey comb and why use the other type of light. THANK YOU.
You’re super welcome 🤗
I liked the Aputure the best, but I see no problem using the ultra cheap too. You use the tools you have access to.
Thank you for explaining the difference! New to lighting/photography/video etc so it's good to know

there are ones that are a bit more expensive on amazon around the 80 dollar range that has dimmable and also kelvin 2700 to 6400k

In the cheapest one you can add it the background controll... You can pay line $5 it's done no light in the background

Lol... OK thanks for the video... But why do you get SO close to the camera... Is just weird.

The cheap softbox and light is for photography, you said it yourself, so this comparison is unfair.
thats a light comparisson not a softbox comparisson
