      Just bought a few Amarans, but I’ve had a flexible LED light panel since around 2017, a company that was affordable but now non existent (VersaTile), and to your point it’s great for booming in to get very close, soft light, and I was able to take it on international jobs since it was so small.

    The thing is, with this you are limited with only diffused light. Which is great for a lot of use, but with a point source of light you can also shoot with more focuses beam if you need and go wide with a diffuser. On big advantage it has, is if you want to film in a tight space .

      I would build a funnel out of very light sheet metal or aluminium foil and place it in front of the LED mat. The metal inside reflects the light and the smaller outlet at the end of the funnel acts as a beam.

    We have several light mats; one of the great things about them is that you don't need heavy C-stands. Lightweight light stands are perfectly adequate. Not only is the instrument small and takes up a small space in your kit but the overall weight of your kit is much lighter too.

    For attaching it with Velcro, you can get Gaffer Tape compatible with Velcro. If it's not already on there, put semi-permanent velcro on the light, but use the gaff tape on your wall. You can attach/detach the light as needed, then when the project is finished just peel the gaff tape off your wall and you're done... as long as you bought the good (i.e. expensive) tape that peels off clean.

    I've been using flex lights for about 5 years now and I was kind of happy to see Godox enter the game due to me coming from Westcott and now currently to Falcon eyes due to possibly a shift in price and perhaps resolve some of the issues I have always had ioth these types of lights. If you don't know and rarely are ever told in these product showcase video's is these are not for travel like you would think. When I first saw these and since I am on site everywhere always flying I was stoked that I could pack these (wrap them up) and save tons of space and weight. No, that's the case. In fact they took up more room and or weighted twice that of a normal light its side. Thats because of the GIANT power brick they come with. Some even come with two of them. Now, where these do shine and like he pointed out is putting them in places (as long as you get an extension cable for power) you couldn't or would bot want traditional lights. especially over head due to safety. Thats where these are great. If they fall, their not going to kill anyone. Seems the Godox are more pricey then most with the exception of Westcott. I will say my Westcott that are now 5.5 years old and my Falcon eyes that are about the same are rock solid still. hopefully Godox is the same. Godox is starting to go the way of Apature in both quality\price and reputation it seems. Sucks for the wallet but good for the brand.

    Practical, but at one third of the cost, and with FOUR times the output of the light panel, the Amaran COB 60x S Bi-Color seems like a much better deal.

    • @colinjudge1261
      @colinjudge1261 Год назад +3

      How are you measuring output? Bare-bulb Lux at 1m? Put the Amaran in a 2’x2’ softbox, and compare the readings then. This is a 200W light, it’s not outputting a quarter of the intensity of a 60W light. A COB light has the flexibility of being used as a hard light, or modified in multiples ways to be different qualities of soft light. But the advantages of a panel are clearly explained in the video. If none of those apply to you (saves space, is lightweight, can be mounted anywhere, is weather resistant), then sure, the COB might be better for you.
      The real comparable light offered by Amaran is the F22X, which is the same price as this one by Godox.

    • @DARKLYLIT
      @DARKLYLIT Год назад

      @@colinjudge1261 Just looking at the output specs: the Amaran is 33,300 Lux @ 3.3'. The Godox is 8300 Lux at 3.3'. Unless these specs are completely misleading, that is slightly more than 4x the output at 1m. Plus, no multiple shadows. Of course the pluses of the Godox are evident but, as far as output, if you're going to spend $600US, you could get three of the Amaran COB 60x S Bi-Color, or even get two of the 200w Amaran COB 200x S Bi-Color (45,400 Lux @ 3.3') for a little more than the Godox 200w light panel.

    I haven't had time to say goodbye to the softbox..... ;) can you answer what to do about filling shadows in the middle of a sunny day? For a group of three or four people? Full height or at least hard shadows on faces. The Godox AD400 Pro with the native softbox was quite good at this task. And it does not glare in the eyes with continuous light at the brightness level of the sun. Otherwise my models would just close their eyes or squint. I'm talking about how to make a photograph ...
    In spite of loud claims, there is a better solution for every task on the market. Obviously, for video shooting, a compact constant light source is a better solution than a single powerful lamp with a deep diffuser. When describing your finding, please describe also the conditions of its application, advantages and disadvantages so it will be quite good. All the best!

    You can put 1200W into softbox or 200W ... you don't have that choice with panel. You can take off front cloth from softbox and make harder light. You can use parabolic softbox and mimic natural light. Softboxes are deep for a reason. And yes, You can achive harder shadows with smaller softbox and softer with larger.

    Point lights are far superior in terms of overall flexibility (think gobos, softboxes, fresnel lenses). They can be made soft, but a softbox can never be made into a hard light source, unless it is insanely powerful and used at a distance.
    The only advantage this has is in its size and portability.

    What would convince someone to purchase this over the Amaran F22X? It’s cheaper and although Godox is improving, Amaran is a more trustworthy brand (imo). Maybe a video comparing the 2 would be beneficial? Love your content!

    Hello . As always the main question is the length of cable . One in a set ? And any longer optional ?
    Cause we know it 99 % only special brand cables will work and the length of them usually limited
    So it can be a hard time to mount it to the ceiling and not to get wire in a wide shot... Then probably to mount a controll unit... Somehow
    It is also a big issue for the crane stands..we need a 2--3 meters up and 2-5 meters forward... To get a nice wide shot sometimes(here controll unit can be mounted easier)
    Another point . Is how do you consider is it more optimal chose for traveling alone and solo shooting. To pack them to the traveling case. Mats itself seems optimal, the dint take much space and it's pretty much impossible to brake or crack them (comparing to the tubes and mono sources fixtures)
    But the controll unit still big and probably can be dameged
    The battery is important thing too. Can it be powered by double/triple Npf970 with any special plate ? Do they sell one ? Do other brands works with a system ?
    V-mount batteries sometimes are too heavy/ not allowed in the plane / not easy to find in a lot of countries and cities....
    Npf compatiblity sometimes really important
    And this bring me back to power /size/ power block size/ ways of powering ... Compare
    For traveling kit

      @@SamHolland Thanks for your reply Sam, I really like what I saw in your review and considering buying the 600... however it's a good chunk of change to buy this one... I would prefer seeing a review of the LED mat shot without a diffusing and softening filter on the lens... this is not a fair representation of the light.

    5:50 Look at how large and deep the frame is for the panel. It sticks out quite a bit and takes up half the depth of a softbox. It's still taking up quite some space eventhough the panel itself is thin. I'm sure you know this fact and tried not to show the panel sideways in many of your shots to give the illusion its thin and compact.
