A light straight on will actually give you a lot flatter look. That might be a good or a bad thing, if you're older a flatter light and using a camera from further away, straight on will make you look younger in front of the camera.
That was very helpful!! Some neat tips in this video! And the best tip i think was “stop making excuses about your equipment, start with your smart phone and progress from there”, which is what I am about to do for the moment, and I’m holding on to your video for future reference!
Instead of a filler light, if you are on a budget, get some white foam core poster board. The light from your key light will bounce enough to lighten and soften the skin on the other side of the face.
I think I've watched this video at least 5 times. I can't stop myself from making my backgrounds too busy, but now I just watch the video because it's a good video.
Great stuff, Lila! I learned the 3-point "Rembrandt" setup in film school as well. But fashion photographers and cinematographers have been using the "butterfly" setup for ages and it was a real eye-opener when I learned about that. Watch old romantic films from the 30s and 40s. The famous Marlene Deitrich portrait the was copied by Queen is an exagerad version of the butterfly setup. I've done a 'tiny' amount of fashion photography and straight-on light just above the camera is always a great choice - looks great on everybody. I also add a small bounce underneath to put a little light under the chin and neck. That's not generally practical for the average YT setup at a desk, though. Your setup looks great!
Fantastic guide on achieving a cinematic look with just three lights! Your explanation of each lighting position and its impact on the video is incredibly helpful
Obsessed with the all black walls lol! A Pro tip on glasses and reflections: Something we'll do often times is just tilt the glasses down slightly. So the backside is not sitting on your ears exactly but just slightly above, while the front is tilted down. This gets rid of all light reflection usually :)
@@hnia0 you need space between the light source and the diffusion, so placing the fabric directly on the ring won't do. As an option you can improvise a frame for the fabric to be attached to (with a hole in the fabric for the lens to go through if that's what your setup requires), then a way to rig this frame some distance in front on the ring (it can be a separate stand or some extension allowing to attach to the same stand the light ring is on or the camera tripod). The amount of diffusion will depend on the thickness of the fabric and the distance from the light. Diffusing will always take away some of the intensity of your light source, you might want to take that into account. Experiment.

So many helpful tips here, thank you so much Lila! It was great to see your setup behind the scenes, I love it when RUclipsrs show their workflows or setups, it gives a lot of ideas and is also a great starting point. 😃
It's just basic three point lighting. She just didn't really give you a straightforward message. Also she didn't ID the back lights as backlight. So three point lighting... You have a key to the right. A fill light that is softer to the left. An a backlight to give you that cinematic highlight, Wich I think she over does with where she placed her backlight
Gizmo! I love the colours you chose for the background Lila! I'm slowly adding more lighting options to my kit, and have been saving up to get something like the 120d II or 100d since those should be powerful enough for both photo and video projects. My first Aputure light was the MC RGBWW LED. That tiny light really opened up a bunch of possibilities while in college and added pops of colour in an otherwise drab background. I'd love to grow my kit with more Aputure lights and those tube lights have been in my shopping cart for a long time. 🥰 I also love how you spoke with other female RUclipsrs about lighting and included tips for glasses wearers (Mine always seem to catch reflections 😱). Keep up the amazing work and thank you for being such an inspiring person Lila!
Really enjoying the black walls in the studio! Mind sharing what shade of black you chose to go with? It looks like it has a slight blue tint. I would also love to know if you decided to do your ceilings as well. Thanks Lila!
It’s actually anthracite, not black! But it looks black on camera. It’s a rental so my ceilings are still white as we don’t want to go through the trouble of painting it white again 😂

I've been an audio engineer for a while so not new to the gear world. Just didn't need to worry about graphics cards before this 😂 also never felt my samsung t7 get hot until I had to render 4k videos last week. Anyways thanks for helping inspire me
Love it! I’m here from the matti podcast, great conversation! Also, did I hear you say the 120d ii works with the Sidus Link app!? My remote stopped working a few months back so that would be awesome! Lol
Fantastic video. 👏 Yes, I agree. When we photograph women we avoid Rembrandt or loop (is ok) and we go with butterfly lighting. If you have a white desk then place the light in front of your desk and aim it downwards. It light your face and reflect off of the desk. It's one of my favorites for women. 😉
I know I’m a day late and a Dollar short commenting here but if you do wear glasses, are there any tricks that you know to eliminate the glare or reflection of monitors that are sitting in front of you? I’d really be interested to know this.
Just to fill in the gaps a little bit - not sure if this will help Lila - the cinematic standard is three point lighting, with the the key light being the main and brightest, but then with a “fill light” from the other 45 degrees, and a “hair light” above and behind to separate you from the background. If you just use the key light and hair light, and point the fill light at the back wall, that’s “film noir” style lighting. Those kinds of dark shadows on the face will not be the most flattering, instead they make things look dark, mysterious and moody. So you can use the key light head on to avoid shadows on the face, but you might get even better results by adding a fill light on the other side. 👍
Thanks for adding this theory! The idea of this video was to just use 3 lights to make a cool RUclips studio, not to follow the 3 point lighting theory. I just wanna make sure people know what’s possible with a minimum amount of lighting to keep it beginner friendly but still exciting. But this is great knowledge to know so thanks for sharing this with us!! 🙏🏻
@Vaportrials - If you're such an expert, why are you watching a tutorial video? That's what's wrong with society, man. People just always have to be involved in something. If you're such an expert, why not make your own video?
good lights are expensive indeed!! Totally get it. I’m looking at some cheaper options to share but honestly amaran is great value for the money. I’ve used godox before (I think it was 200-250?) but the fan is noisy enough to be picked up by the mic. You can start with a $5 light bulb though - that’s how I got started :)
I’m so happy I came across your channel. I’ve been watching all the men creators talk about lighting but your point about lighting women is valid (to me). I like the 45 degree thing but it’s something a little more flattering with the head on lights.
Amazing setup ! How do you manage the key light not spilling onto wall ! I’m using a honeycomb grid yet my back wall also lights up over powering my ambient lights ! Any suggestions pls ? Even set Key light to minimal
Hey love the video, I'm a professional lighter for 17 years.. If you'd like to get rid of the reflected lights on your cheeks and a bit of your hair. Either lower the density of your tubes with 1/2-1 stop and then compensate with the cameras iso the same amount. You can also move you or the tubes 1 meter apart from each other and they'll be gone =) Keep up the good work.
Gizmo! Afgelopen vrijdag 3 Amaran p60c lampen gekocht. Handig om mee te nemen als run & gun filmmaker. Jouw uitleg is erg helder! En grappig! Ga zo door.
Yes! I would like to see a comparison of the key lights that you used please. If you have created the comparison video please reply with the link to the video. Thank you 😊
@@lilafromyoutube Thanks so much. I have one last question. How many inches tall and wide is the desk behind you? Or if you are able to link me to it, please do.
I would like to see recommendations for a lightweight, fast setup but professional looking mobile version of podcast lighting equipment for two participants, that is usable in various locations, without needing to rent from a near shop each time
Thank you! I enjoyed learning this! However I'm wanting a natural light look. Not unnatural pink, purple, teal, orange, etc. Is there a way for me to consistently achieve that well other than sit facing a window during daylight hours and hope for weather to cooperate? Or is there a way to take what sunlight there is and use it even better...like would a sheer curtain help amplify and diffuse it?
A sheer curtain is always the way to go on a bright sunny day. If it’s cloudy, the clouds will diffuse the sun light for you. You can use a good key and fill light to get a natural look. I’ll put it on my list of ideas as I’m planning to make a few more videos like this one!
Gizmo! For the longest time I believed that natural light is the best light, but I'm learning more and more that knowing when to use what type of light is really the best way to go!
natural light is very helpful and affordable, but I have had many issues with clouds appearing in front of the sun which results in very inconsistent lighting. I'm glad this video helped!
Gizmo! Also, I haven’t even considered the 45 degree angle rule when it comes blemishes and things like that. Definitely something I’ll start keeping in mind!
Assume video! Question, for my first key light…Amaran 100 DS, or 100 XS? I will most likely only use in my office for steaming, maybe a few item reviews and possibly once in a while use at different locations indoor, non commercial use. Thank you!
Thanks for the commentary on moving the lighting head-on. I was having the problem of "extra character accents" on my face suddenly appearing with the lighting "ideal 45 degrees". I moved my lights head on and I feel like it works best for me in my set-up so I can concentrate on content. Not on facial features which suddenly have become movie stars on their own. Overall, this video is a wonderful change from the same old info we see everywhere. I do presentations often and I have been able to take better control of the lighting in various situations and make I'll make suggestions based on tips from this video. Thank you !
I so wish I had found this video months ago! I've been dealing with some frustrating flicker from Philips Hue lights in my videos, I've tried a few things to lessen it but.... Looks like I'm in the market for a different lighting setup. The Amaran lights look really cool to me. Thanks for sharing those.
Great video. My room is pretty long and the wall behind me (when I face the camera/computer) is 4m away. With the lightbox I have it lits up the room and I can't find a way to get that all dark room the way you and other youtubers show. Is this an issue with the choice of light?
For sure. The tubes don’t come with grids (I don’t think€ so turning them away a bit more would work too :) I didn’t notice it until the edit so I just left it as is.
Hi Lila, thanks for the Video - I have a question: (How) can I use an existing livestream on the internet (just any webcam) use and turn into a youtube livestream? Thanks for your answer!

Nice vid Lila, thnx for your help.I have a question, if you are sitting so close to the wall, how can your keylight not light too much the background in that tiny space and manage to keep it so dark in the first example? Is it the position of the light the key to avoid that?
Hi, great Video and I have followed a lot of your steps, and it looks great. One slightly unrelated question regarding the Auto Focus settings you are using. My Talking Head is almost identical distance to yours in this Video, but whether I use spot focus, centre focus or wide .. the shot keeps breathing in and out .. now I am always in focus, so it's not losing the tracking on my face, but it moves in the background, and I cannot for the life of me work out why. I have a Sony A7S iii with a 24mm G Master lens, which I think you also have (I may be wrong there), so if you are able to give me some advice this will top it all off ! thanks again for the great content/videos .. super useful.
Heya! I’m using the 24-70 GM II lens but that shouldn’t be an issue as I’ve used the 24MM prime before. Have you tried using another lens?? Just want to make sure we’ve covered all the basics 😅
Do you do any colour grading or do you simply just shoot and then start editing? I ask this question because Im wondering if I need to outlay money on a powerful computer or just use my laptop
Lila....glad I found your channel. I really liked this! These tube lights are fairly pricey. Any other videos reviewing or recommending some that are maybe under $100.00? Thanks! Looking forward to scoping out more of your channel.
Lila: You mentioned the bulb for your set at the back right. Can you please share where to get the fixture for the bulb and glass globe on top? Thanks a lot.
I appreciate info videos, however in this case I counted a lot more than 3 lights though (meaning a lot more than it might seem to invest in the look on the thumbnail)... 3 types of lights: Key light + fill light / 2x long RGB LED, the IKEA also color-changing light, and the strip light...

She did use just 3.
The other light is for the next content hahaha
anyone know what colour the wall paint ??
@@PurwantoDarto she mentioned it was just black.
Thanks!
🎉🎉 thank you!
Keep up the amazing work and thank you for being such an inspiring person Lila!
the 120D MII is pretty expensive so maybe the amaran 200d could be one to check out too!
Statistically, Rembrandt mainly used "Rembrandt light" on men. With women he hardly ever used it, opting for Loop or Butterfly lighting instead.
Then you going go to spilt when you move in a video 😂
That’s not statistical.
I've watch dozen of videos about lighting. Yours is the best one so far !
Means a lot 🙏🏻
The teal and orange combo creates a fire and ice look
Yeah it’s a very popular one (dare I say a bit overused)

Most helpful lighting video I've ever watched. It's the one thing I've struggled most with throughout all my years on RUclips - definitely going to impliment these tips.
Let me know how it goes 😊
@@lilafromyoutube I will make a video when I get it all figured out (might be a while, lol...I'm kind of chaotic)
Great advice, especially for a newbie like me! Thank you. Could you tell me about the cabinet/drawer unit behind you? Would be a perfect addition to my space.
It’s a local Dutch brand so I’m not sure how helpful that is 😅
Love that set up! I’m gonna go for the same look only with blue background. Just got my first camera last week. The Zve10. Got a 1’ Amaran Aputure tube light and one of the MC minis on the way for the background. Still deciding which way I want to go with the key light but it will certainly be an Aputure!!
Exciting!! Amaran key lights are good too and def more affordable. Look into the 100D :)
@@lilafromyoutube just got my Adorama credit card in the mail today! Have 1 in my cart right now with soft box lol I’m checking out your affiliate links now 😊

As a female creator, I’ve been struggling with lighting and the harsh shadows you talked about. Glad to see it isn’t just in my head, and others are feeling it too.
yeah i thought i'd mention it for the women who feel the same way. have you tried putting the light directly at you?
I noticed this too, love this tip
Butterfly 🦋
Your videos looks very clear. Could you tell me which camera you use? Also what color profile do you use? Thank you for the great content!
Originally came here while looking for lighting tips to help a friend. The quality of this video (and all your others) led to me jumping into video and the Sony world. About to purchase an fx3 next week, along with aputure lights. You're amazing lila
oh wow congrats on getting the fx3! Just FYI I film everything with my a7SIII but you can’t go wrong with the fx3! Enjoy 🫶🏻
@Lila yea after learning they have the same sensor and internals it was a no brainer. I'll still be able to take amazing pics too. But leaning towards video content so cinema camera won my heart over.
Looking forward to watching more of your videos to learn all I can
Haha that’s fair!! You’re not gonna regret it ☺️ hope you’ll enjoy the lights too
So update: been having a lot of fun with the fx3. Hell of a camera. Ordered a rode ntg5 today. Will be getting amaran 200x s soon. Ill go through all of your videos looking for tips and tricks.
I've been an audio engineer for a while so not new to the gear world. Just didn't need to worry about graphics cards before this 😂 also never felt my samsung t7 get hot until I had to render 4k videos last week. Anyways thanks for helping inspire me
I’d love to know where you got your black locker cabinet behind your desk!
Can you talk about whether to use "warm", "cold" or "white" settings??
I’ll see what I can do :)
Love it! I’m here from the matti podcast, great conversation! Also, did I hear you say the 120d ii works with the Sidus Link app!? My remote stopped working a few months back so that would be awesome! Lol
Yeah but you need a bridge in order for it to work. Thanks for stopping by!!
Very neat! Any suggestions for the panel lights? I don't have a plethora of space in front of me for the big lights
maybe something like this? ruclips.net/video/go3j43WNCo0/видео.html
@@lilafromyoutube Ahhh I see what you did there! Taking a look right now 👀
Great video!! I love those black cabinets so much. Do you know the brand/model?
Fantastic video. 👏 Yes, I agree. When we photograph women we avoid Rembrandt or loop (is ok) and we go with butterfly lighting. If you have a white desk then place the light in front of your desk and aim it downwards. It light your face and reflect off of the desk. It's one of my favorites for women. 😉
Hey, I realy like your gray background. What color is your wall? Thank you! (Gray, but can you say exactly?
If you're such an expert, why not make your own video?
what kind of foundation are you wearing? it has a really natural matte look. Also i agree Remb lighting is very dramatic showing a lot of sorrow
All is good but the price tag of any of those advertised lighting systems is impressive. Certainly not for small youtube bloggers.
good lights are expensive indeed!! Totally get it. I’m looking at some cheaper options to share but honestly amaran is great value for the money. I’ve used godox before (I think it was 200-250?) but the fan is noisy enough to be picked up by the mic. You can start with a $5 light bulb though - that’s how I got started :)
Gizmo!
Ive always wanted a tube light and can never quite justify the cost of the higher end ones. They do give a sweet look, Love your setup!
they're awesome! good luck
I’m so happy I came across your channel. I’ve been watching all the men creators talk about lighting but your point about lighting women is valid (to me). I like the 45 degree thing but it’s something a little more flattering with the head on lights.
I’m glad to hear that! And I totally agree :) I tried the whole cinematic 45 degree thing but I really don’t like it on my face.
Great info! Would like a comparison video or specific 100D review please, there is barely any good quality ones on RUclips at the moment!
Will look into it, thanks!
Hey thanks for the feedback! I was working off that mini flip out screen so I didn’t notice it until the edit 😅
Gizmo! Afgelopen vrijdag 3 Amaran p60c lampen gekocht. Handig om mee te nemen als run & gun filmmaker. Jouw uitleg is erg helder! En grappig! Ga zo door.
Nice! Hopelijk bevallen ze je 👏🏻 thanks voor het compliment
Gizmo !
And if you want to go even cheaper.... Use the Aputure MC lights ! Versatile and magnetic too !!!! 🔥
Haha true!
Do we know the camera settings? I'd really like to know what focal length she is shooting at.
I’m honestly not sure. I change it since it’s a zoom lens. I usually just zoom it in until I like how it looks. So specific focal length
Yes! I would like to see a comparison of the key lights that you used please. If you have created the comparison video please reply with the link to the video. Thank you 😊
Amazing video. This has given me sucvch great help! Question: What are you putting that Aputure fixture light in?
It’s an Ikea lamp! Got it years ago
@@lilafromyoutube Thanks so much. I have one last question. How many inches tall and wide is the desk behind you? Or if you are able to link me to it, please do.
I would like to see recommendations for a lightweight, fast setup but professional looking mobile version of podcast lighting equipment for two participants, that is usable in various locations, without needing to rent from a near shop each time
I’m actually planning to make a video about this
Love that hand cream on the table. I also have on my desk at all times.
😂👌🏻
Gizmo! Can you use a mobile or portable key light ? Most of the key lights I saw on RUclips are huge and can’t be used when traveling
The panel lights or the amaran review I linked in the end screen are great portable lights!
All is perfect! But one question... Why you break the a water glass?
instead of a softbox you can also use some smooth whitish surface like a wall or even a sheet of paper to make the light much smoother
Gizmo!
Also, I haven’t even considered the 45 degree angle rule when it comes blemishes and things like that. Definitely something I’ll start keeping in mind!
it's all personal preference at the end of the day :)
Thanks, so helpful! simple yet effective and beautiful lighting.
Assume video! Question, for my first key light…Amaran 100 DS, or 100 XS? I will most likely only use in my office for steaming, maybe a few item reviews and possibly once in a while use at different locations indoor, non commercial use. Thank you!
DS (daylight) will suffice but if you want more flexibility, go for the XS
@@lilafromyoutube thank you 🙏
Thanks for the commentary on moving the lighting head-on.
They’re great! My Philips hue strip doesn’t flicker. Where are you located and what shutter speed do you use
Great video. My room is pretty long and the wall behind me (when I face the camera/computer) is 4m away. With the lightbox I have it lits up the room and I can't find a way to get that all dark room the way you and other youtubers show. Is this an issue with the choice of light?
What soft box are you using?
@@lilafromyoutube I'm using 50x70cm simple softbox from Aliexpress...
Hi there, for doing a toy reviews on the dinning table, in living room. What lighting system you recommend
Looks very nice but it can be much better. Use something like a grid on the tubes and you won't have spoil on your face.
For sure. The tubes don’t come with grids (I don’t think€ so turning them away a bit more would work too :) I didn’t notice it until the edit so I just left it as is.
Thank you so much. This is very helpful. Watching you all the way from Lagos, Nigeria.
Can you do a budget friendly version? Can’t pay $1k for a main light! Love the content!
Gizmo! I’m sure I’m way too late but I wanted to say that I love my two Amaran 200d lights. I use them with MagMod Softboxes.
That’s great to hear! Do you use them for a talking head setup?
this is without a doubt the best video on lighting on RUclips!
Im so honoured thank you!!
Hi Lila, thanks for the Video - I have a question: (How) can I use an existing livestream on the internet (just any webcam) use and turn into a youtube livestream? Thanks for your answer!
Hi Lila!! Can I ask the link for the bulb charging base and cover? I really love it!!!! 🥰🥰🥰😍😍😍
Gizmo :) Hello from Ontario - great job on the Matti Haapoja podcast - that's where i was introduced to you and what brought me over here to your channel
thanks so much for popping by! i hope you enjoyed the episode
Gizmo, those tube lights look pretty cool, my current lights take up a lot of space on stands for background lights
What lights do you currently use?
@@lilafromyoutube this last year I moved over to newer 660... they are great, and come with stands I could probably mount them on something smaller but not as nice as a tube light might be more powerful though... not sure.
honesty I got some from grovve (i think they were called), while it doesnt feel has high quality as some, the UI is the best I have seen!! yu can chanhe segments of the lights in both brightness and colour.
I’ve been on a single soft light source + neg sort of kick. Sometimes you don’t need a ton of lights.
agreed
Nice vid Lila, thnx for your help.I have a question, if you are sitting so close to the wall, how can your keylight not light too much the background in that tiny space and manage to keep it so dark in the first example? Is it the position of the light the key to avoid that?
I have the same question. My key light and fill light are bleeding into the background.
Thanks! Looking forward to scoping out more of your channel.

haha what a smooth plug it was, but yeah the tube lights look great and also the glasses tip was very helpful.
I appreciate info videos, however in this case I counted a lot more than 3 lights though (meaning a lot more than it might seem to invest in the look on the thumbnail)... 3 types of lights: Key light + fill light / 2x long RGB LED, the IKEA also color-changing light, and the strip light...
