As someone who has Dutch and English ancestors who lived in pre Revolutionary NY it's interesting to me to see how these families continued after my lines broke off. I am impressed by how well Julian has researched all of this and I'm hoping that we get a visit from some of our favorite Downton Abbey Americans

Would be nice to see a younger Martha Levinson mother of Cora crawly from downton abbey. Cora was born in the 1860s she would be 14 in 1882. so would be nice to see a cameo of the younger Martha character with her teen daughter.

Agreed, but it would have to be done in such a way that it makes sense for the narrative of The Gilded Age. The timeline and social class certainly fit and it would be a nice tie in to reinforce the connection to Europe, but it can't just be thrown in as a wink and a nod to Downton fans. That would just be gratuitous, but if it helps round out a storyline then by all means.

It’s is very interesting how quickly African Americans picked them selves up and rose in stature, after the end of slavery. Then how quickly and terribly they there put down. That is the real shame America must face, which is almost worse than slavery, because everyone participates in this subjugation of the black Americans. Those who actually participated in slavery was a much smaller number.

Notice when Miss Scott came to dinner how the working class immigrants responded? This country is aweful from start to finish. Those ladies were SERVANTS but felt the need to exude superiority. Very much enjoyed the first episode. Casting, writing, acting, direction, sets and costumes certainly don't disappoint. One of my grips about period production is when they play fast and loose with historical events. History as it happened is fascinating and entertaining enough without the need to take artistic license to make a story "better". Given how well Downton Abbey is done I don't think there will be any worry that GA will get it right. That said, I'm excited to see how the economic roller coaster of the era, the panics of 1884, 93, 96, and 1907 and 10, Tammany Hall, the end of Gilded Age and rise of the Progressive Era etc... will be incorporated into the story line. This is not a documentary so I don't expect exact fidelity to history, but some of these things definitely need to be included in the series.

Julian Fellowes is a delight to listen to and I think he should keep talking and writing about many history chapters outside of Europe too. Christine is a stalwart but to listen to her about her process and interpretations was refreshing and so lovely. The show is just brilliant I hope it packs in more episodes per season and aslo has a good long run like Downton Abbey. HBO should try to remove the paywall on this show because it is a vital chapter in American history and history of economics and culture that every American should have access to view in order to know the beginnings of unfettered capitalism. We live in a world where history is being silenced and banned this show should be received by all.

Anyone noticed how important female ancestry is in this society? That's a big difference from Britain, where aristocrats got their social standing from their fathers and the titles and land they inherit. But in NYC, it's "your grandmother was a Livingston!" and "we're related though the Livingstons!" and "his mother's people came on the Mayflower" and "her background isn't impeccable...thanks to her mother." Their male ancestry is almost an afterthought.

They did have comfortable robes, pajamas, lingerie and comfortable non-restrictive house attires of all types (winter and summer) to lounge around their living quarters during off days, for sure. Just imagine being cinched in a corset for 18 hours with several dress changes when there's nobody around to admire it. What woman would have subjected herself to such utter idiocy for no reason?!!!

I was disappointed in the script so far. We get some understanding of the Brook family and their motivations but little about Bertha, other than she has a sister she doesn't want to have visit. I like how Fellowes mentions in the podcast that there was nothing overtly spectacular about Mrs. Astor at least in the sense of her appearance or humor. I come to the conclusion that many of these rich, society women back then were very intelligent but had no outlet for themselves other than planning parties and trying to keep control of their surroundings. I wish Fellowes would explore that more with the characters. How does Bertha come into her sense of style and design?

We also have the show 1883, one year later, where people were going west to seek their fortunes.

I think of the new show “1883”. Be fun if some teleport switched the characters’ places.

It may be helpful to add a historian with a background in black history to your conversation from time to time. I believe you and your listeners would find such perspectives uncovering a great opportunity and not a little bit illuminating.

I thought that actor playing Miss Brooks was awful, so stilted and lifeless in her performance. So I looked her up to see if she's done anything else. And I was astounded to read she's Meryl Streep's daughter, what a shock!

      @theresakeith5854 2 года назад +4

I thought the very same thing. The Van Rijhn family is lifeless as a whole... Cynthia Nixon is generally basic, but Christine Baranski should be better. I do like the show though.

    • @okpanda6078

@@theresakeith5854 Yes I love Christine Baranski, maybe she'll bring life to that family if future scripts give her half a chance. 🙂

Sometimes, 'stilted and lifeless" is the goal. Think about Mary in Downton Abbey. However I disagree with you. To me she behaves like a stranger that is put in the middle of a group and needs to find how to behave: you remain still, you look around and you are careful.

What a lot of Americans don't understand is that most of the Irish immigrants didn't speak English but could only speak Gaelic. That is the major reason they were regulated to servant work.

I really enjoyed the episode…. But part of me is wondering if this is glorifying the inequalities still existing in American society, time will tell it’s only episode one but it’s hard to “root” for the people who’ oppressed the rest of our recent ancestors

When Agnes told her staff to get Peggy a room, she didn't specify where so I wondered if maybe the staff took it upon themselves to relegate Peggy to servants areas while Agnes perhaps wouldn't have though simply didn't get involved. Dunno. Seemed interesting that the staff assumed her instruction there. Agnes certainly didn't have an issue with Peggy being black.
