  • In part one of this week’s episode hosts Alicia Malone (TCM) and Tom Meyers (The Bowery Boys) explore notable New York City locations of the Gilded Age and also examine those that are relevant today. They react to events that take place leading up to the grand bazaar and discuss the important role of gatekeepers that the city aldermen played when building in New York City during the Gilded Age.
In part two, the hosts are joined by Morgan Spector (George Russell) and Lauri Pitkus (Locations Manager) to discuss the development of George’s character and the unique approach the show took to scouting and securing locations.

I hope you talk more about Peggy, the lone non-white character in the series, and her world. I love the scene of the blacks-only rail car and Peggy and her mother in the blacks-only café. Where were those types of establishments located in the city? What was black life like during that period? What kind of jobs were they allowed to have?

How did they disrespect his wife? No one was obligated to have a function at their house. I’d I offer to have a party at my house and the people who are throwing it decide to do something else, I promise you I won’t feel the least bit slighted. That is what I don’t like about the Russells. They are trying to force people to accept them. Why? Because they have a lot of money. They are not even attempted to let relationship happen organically with people who don’t even know them.

I treat people according to their values and associate myself with people based on character. Also the fact they cared more about not being with the mrs russel or having her associated with her rather then doing the right thing which is come together for the needy. I think a lot of the times the food is covered with wax or different things that make it sort-of inedible in order to keep it under the hot stage lights for so long, so ultimately no one eats it. I know in some Downton interviews the cast talked about how whenever they would film dinner scenes, it would take the whole day and sometimes they would "eat" fish and it would stink a lot because of how long it had to sit out while they were filming.

Maybe they used locations in the former Helmsley Palace hotel which was previously the Villard Houses on Madison Avenue between 59/51st street. It was built by McKim, Mead and White. It once had a wonderful pink marble interior made from irreplaceable bookcased marble in solid floor to ceiling slabs. This was broken up and torn out when a certain prince owned it, simply because he did not like pink. They used to do a lovely afternoon tea there, and maybe still do. It might be worth checking if you’re in New York.
