  • In part one, hosts Alicia Malone (TCM) and Tom Meyers (The Bowery Boys) recap this week’s episode and discuss the industries that were booming at the time, for example, railroads, newspaper/journalism, and “magic lantern shows.”
    In part two they are joined by Cynthia Nixon (Aunt Ada Brooke) and director Salli Richardson-Whitfield to discuss the decisions made off-screen to bring together such a complex episode and overall production. Find out which shot wasn’t planned, but happened serendipitously to create a beautiful moment on screen.

    The Russells are the true power couple. They protect and support one another. It's sad that rich guy committed suicide but he is the only person to blame. George Russell was more than fair to do a business deal and look what they tried to do. And I have a bit more respect with Agnes. She really does have the smarts to tell who is after money. That suitor ran out with his tail btw his legs knowing he would have to support Ada is they married.

      @TimTim & The BusyBodies! lol. Thrice. Im quite fond of this word. Definitely, sounds like some boundaries need to be set. At this point my idea of ideal neighbors is if i don't know they exist. The minute I do, 90% of the time it's not good. I once had a guy who threw food out into the small private parking lot on a daily basis, "for the birds," which of course caused my car to always be covered in bird 🐦 excrement. Take a guess whether or not he had a car parked in said parking lot. Very similar to your stray cat issue. That a number of other incidences thru my life with neighbors and I'm ecstatic when I have neighbors who I don't even know exist cuz keep quiet, peaceful and to themselves.

    This podcast well-explained how the aldermen tanked themselves financially. By borrowing stock at a marginal price in Russell’s company before rescinding the bill for Russell’s rail station, they figured the stock price would drop after the bill was rescinded. But Russell found out their plan to rescind the bill from the newspapers and bought more shares himself to keep the stock price high. So after the bill was rescinded, the stock price stayed up. Then the aldermen had to purchase the stock at the high price which broke them. Doing a Short bet, referring to a short amount of time, based on time and market fluctuations, is far more risky than a long bet. Problem in this case was that the window of time was very narrow, somewhat like a horse race.

    I wish instead of showing the lazy stereotype of struggling African Americans this show had gone further to show some of the ACTUAL African American elite families that existed at the time in New York. An example would be The Downing dynasty, who literally created the concept of Oyster fine downing houses in New York City and were fabulously wealthy as well as patronised by the city's leading families and European royals. The Downing children actually went to school in Europe and when Thomas Downing died, he was one of the wealthiest men in the entirety of NYC.

    *What mansions/buildings are featured in these photos on rotation during the podcast? They don't seem to be from the show.*
    Leaving this comment on each episode as I listen, hope someone can answer this pretty please! It's driving me nuts!

    Well this wonderful show has me loving Cynthia Nixon. The series AJLT is deplorable and I associated Ms. Nixon with that debacle. I was wrong about her, she's incredible on this series.

      By the way :
      1) if we are watching the podcast we don’t need this explained to us in such a simple manner. We get short selling stocks. More detail on the statute of liberty would be nice. Don’t talk down to us.
      2) this is an amazing cast. Let them speak about their motivation , prior plays , etc more
      3) you can connect who these people are and compare them to modern day people easily.
      We have a greater concentration of wealth than imperial Russia’s 1200 families. This can be discussed in a non woke way.
      4) the costumes are amazing. Can someone give us some info on them as well ?
      5) Stanford white story and tour would be interesting. So can Clara Barton info. If someone real is presented have some fun with it.
      I’m not sure what demographic is watching this. But it may be a more sophisticated group.
      6) have Christian Baranski as much as possible. But this is really Mrs Russell’s story.

    Im failing to understand how the families are facing financial ruin if they've already sold the stocks when the stocks went up. This makes absolutely no sense at all. If you buy a stock and it goes up and you sell it you have MORE MONEY. Someone else buying the stock should make zero impact on the money you already made. How did this very basic and obvious fact get missed?

    • @Bamboo4U2
      @Bamboo4U2 2 года назад +5

      They borrowed money to buy the stock and have to pay back a higher amount if it goes up, no?

    • @mrb4761
      @mrb4761 2 года назад +2

      They "shorted" the stock.
      When you di that you sell more than you actually have and then when the margin call comes you have to make up the difference between what your stocks are worth when you bought them and the new market value of the # of shares you own

      Even if there was a policy, the creators probably would not want to “reward” or “glorify” the act of suicide.
