    I’m so glad this wonderful podcast is back! A fun fact about opera singer Christina Nilsson: it is strongly believed that she was the template/inspiration for the character of Christine Daae in The Phantom of the Opera!

    Love this show. I am so glad that Julian Fellows took an interest in our country at this period of time to bring us this magnificent ensemble of story telling, casting and all involved for our enjoyment.

      I'm not a fan of american culture but Julian Fellows did such amazing work with very toxic topics that are needlessly controversial in USA, and of course HBO made the world look so vibrant! Great show, I wish it was more popular. It's definetly worth seeing this bit of dramatized history regardless of political leanings.
      I wish the rich women's clothes were more historically accurate because often they take me out of it. otherwise 10/10 HBO should give it Euphoria levels of marketing budget, I dunno why they are sleeping on this show.

    I wonder if we will find out that in Agnes past she had to take work, or very nearly had to take work after her father's death and her brother's financial recklessness. I feel that her reaction was so deep and personal. When she married Mr van Rhijn it was to save them (and their name) from what Marion was here subjecting them to.

    • @HisameArtwork
      @HisameArtwork 9 месяцев назад +11

      yeah something was up, plus she's always right, so I wonder what historical context we're missing that she's viewing female emancipation and financial independence as a bad thing.

    • @patriciasalem3606
      @patriciasalem3606 9 месяцев назад +7

      I agree. Her reaction, even for Agnes, seemed out of proportion to Marian's social infraction.

    • @_adrian_sean
      @_adrian_sean 9 месяцев назад +8

      Eh..... I don't think so. In high society back then you didn't work. They were so rich they didn't have to. Marion working is a sign to some they might not be as rich as they seem. That's why Agnes was mad. They have enough money to support her and they don't understand why she would want to appear to be of a lower class just to earn her own money.

    2nd cousin = the child of a first cousin. They are merely cousins in law. And Bridget served the men coffee. You also glaringly missed that Oscar spotted John AFTER he tried & failed to catch Gladys’ eye after church.

    • @here_we_go_again2571
      @here_we_go_again2571 9 месяцев назад +11

      @LaReinaZorra
      First cousins *to each other* share the same grandparent(s) (one, possibly, two of four people)
      Second cousins *to each other* share the same great-grandparent(s) (one, possibly, two, of eight people)
      Third cousins *to each other* share the same great-great-grandparent(s) ... (one, possibly two of sixteen, people)
      [And so on ....] [I mention "one, possibly two" because some people have half-siblings]
      It gets tricky when first cousins (Let's call them "#") have offspring.
      The offspring (Let's call them "@") are the great-grandchildren of "X/Y" (i.e. the near-ancestors)
      and are second cousins *to each other* (but not to their own parent's cousin)
      The children of two first cousins ("#") are second cousins ("@") to each other. However.....
      In the relationship between cousins:
      The children of first-Cousins (#) (i.e. "@") are *First cousins, once removed* from the parent's(#) first cousin (#).
      (The grandchildren of those first cousins(#) would be *First cousins twice removed*)
      (The great-grandchildren of those first cousins (#) would be *First cousins thrice/ 3times removed )
      The children of ("@") would be Second cousins once removed from each other and so on.
      As the generations progress those cousins will also be great grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren of
      the first group of cousins ("#") and so on going back to whomever the family tree is based upon)
      of those ancestor(s). "X/Y"
      The above leads to confusion. But in closed societies or in societies with a small population; it is necessary
      to keep track to avoid inbreeding. Unfortunately for most royal families, the level of royalty and the need to
      make alliances via marriage interferes with common sense regarding matches

    • @jaynelaywood3570

      Second cousins are the children of cousins. The child of a first cousin is a cousin once removed. Children of second cousins are third cousins and a cousin twice removed from the original cousin.

      @LaReinaZorra clearly gets what a second cousin is. Her correction to the narrators is spot-on. I am curious about your feeling the need to explain hereditary branches of a family tree in such length, as it seems wholly unnecessary here.
