It is never easy to join the “socialites” or the old money rich people even now during the modern times. Manny Pacquiao in our country is one. He has several homes in the upper class neighborhoods, in Beverly Hills, and a mansion in the province here in our country, like he is crazy rich how he was able to make his money grow. But as they said, even if his wife can get exclusive invites to buy from Chanel, LV, Hermes, they will never make it to the “upper social circle”. If their kid will marry into one, only their grandkid will be considered as a socialite, I’m not sure if their kid will be considered. It’s hard to understand the socialites exclusivity and you will rarely know them because they don’t flaunt themselves.

One thing which Fellowes did not mention is the reason why these "Old Money" decided not to mingle with the sorts of Russell's.
The fictional Russells are inspired by the real-life Vanderbilts, who at one point were the wealthiest family in the United States.
Cornelius Vanderbilt was the patriarch who amassed a large fortune in the shipping and railroad industries in the mid-1800s. He was referred to as a "robber baron," which is a derogatory term for a businessman who uses exploitative practices to build their wealth.
Also, these new money resulted in the era being also synonymous with poverty, workers not being paid enough, riots, etc etc, so naturally the Aristrocats would want to distance themselves.

I think back to the focus on those relationships from the start of that show, and I think downstairs’ matters took up more of the plot immediately. In a way, I can see why the servants’ lives get less attention here, because the show has to spend a lot of time on the fight between old money and new money, as well as address post-Civil War race relations that didn’t really have a counterpart in Edwardian England.

@@jae5103- Was shocked that Raised by Wolves got canceled. 😤 There's so much nonsense on television that is given season after season to thrive, but whenever a decent, well written, captivating show like RBW comes on, it's given the ax after just a couple seasons! They ended on a cliffhanger & now we won't even get to see what happens next! It's absolutely infuriating!

What more would get Bertha and Gladys an “in” than Gladys marrying a title like many rich American young ladies did at that time? If you can’t beat them, join them and if you can’t join them, beat them. And if that happens in the show, I hope we get to cross paths with a young Earl of Grantham and Cora! 😊

How interesting that the name chosen for the family would be Russell. It's a family name associated with poor potato farmers in Scotland & Ireland. "Rouse" or "Russ" for red potatoes. Red potatoes were seen as a poor person's crop or food, inferior to white potatoes favored by the British. These people could only be portrayed as wealthy in the US with the name Russell.

@@caligulalonghbottom2629 True. It was his family name. As women changed their family name to the family name of the man, she married so that all would know whose property she was.
Not a slam on men, simply a fact as to how things were done & still done today. The coverture law was put into place in the 1100's. It caught on quickly to assert male dominance.
Though women are not legally property in the USA, they still are in many parts of the world. This is why most women change their family name when they marry & usually it is not the man who changes his family name. History is fascinating!

Causing many of us do research on these wealthy people and poor ones too. The rich can go to poor real fast too, as my 2nd great grandmother did when she married "beneath her station." Parents disowned her. That's how deep that snobbery was. Horrible. I only learned of this in the last 10 years from studying Ancestry and one cousin's in-depth research & personal knowledge of our ancestors. One such family was Schermerhorn.

I love this show, and get so excited for Mondays to come. I really appreciate the scenic design and the grand style of the interiors with such beautiful pieces like the crystal chandeliers of a size I’ve never seen before. I also appreciate the costumes and their great attention to detail, the cast is constantly redressing throughout the day and Mrs. Russel has some stunning pieces like her peacock dress which not only was beautiful but set the tone and the spirit of the scene it was worn as the lady was truly being a peacock all feathered up and looking proud, her evening gown and cape in shocking red for the night at the symphony was amazing, the cloak was the star of the show in all of its glory and you know these pieces took hundreds of hours of hand stitching to create, the mens attire is no less elegant and finely tailored every attention to detail is made down to the pocket watches and finger rings, high tall hats that are just not made anymore so I’m sure the costume department is a very busy place . Dressing not only the lead characters but all the many background actors creating a cohesive and stunning look that really submerses the viewer in the style of the day. So far the storyline is exemplary with wonderful writing and deeply flushed out characters rich in back story and easily believed in their roles. The back and forth between the servants and the masters is very charming and so reminiscent of Downton Abby which was a huge success.
It is a wonderful depiction of the not well known era of American royalty and the struggles of the classes using fictional and non fictional characters interwoven in a spider web of plot lines.
They have done a wonderful job portraying the black community by not focusing on cliche or typical stereotyped characters but wealthy and prominent characters that give justice and honor to the black community showing how they have been right there next to us for so long in this country and though they have their obstacles they are presented in a real life setting respectfully portraying the lines between the races and how they related to each other. Having a strong well bred female black woman as a main character is wonderful and is pivotal to the storyline and has no pandering been given in order to fill a niche.
I have high expectations for this cast and crew and wish to fall in love with every character as they slowly blossom into the various shades of good and evil, titillating and full of real emotions, making this era come to life. I will love to see the show go on for many seasons and even branch out into feature films. There is nothing better than a period piece and this period really shaped the country and is truly an American classic. Well done to all

Yeah, the only thing that is way off are their modern day 21st century American English accents. Nobody spoke like that back then. The young American English in the 19th century was still developing and it was a mixture of American-British, sounding close to Mid-atlantic accent of 20's -40's Hollywood stars. I wish they would have tried and emulate that. Otherwise you're right, amazing production and it really transports you into that era with every frame of interior, exterior and costume.

@@MichelleVisageOnlyFans well I hadn’t had that thought about their accents, but when I remember going to Connecticut and Rhodesia island they had more of the accent that would be right. I am interested to know if the Russell family entering society with “ new” money are Jewish.
They are referred to as “ the tribe “, “their sort “ , “their kind”.
For sure Jewish families would not have been welcomed into the “ old money “ society.
Unless of course they were the Rothschilds. Behind the scenes of the “ Gilded Age” do not seem to mention the ethnic background of the Russells.

But it seems that the whole story is centered around old money vs. new money, without going too much into ethnic background (which they could have done, given that the old "aristocracy" on the East coast was predominantly of Dutch origin).

This is a great show, I like her and her husband. I love that she is not weak and her husband really loves her.
Look, The mayflower was not full of nobility. People would want to believe that, but wasn't.
In fact, Mrs. Astor's ancestor came from a town in Germany from a middle-class (to say the least) He came in the Mayflower with other immigrants (pilgrims I believe that's the innuendo to use here)
To me, all were at a certain point new money.
The families' air of superiority resides in who came before whom?
Just a few high-class people came from Europe.
When someone says "My family came on the Mayflower," I immediately think "And you are proud of that? Are you telling me that your family is among the ones that started the robbing of the land, to the natives?"
Honestly, with all those fairytales about the Mayflower, you inflated all those old yet new money people.
Like any other immigrant like today I admire their entrepreneurism as well, but, let's say the stereotype all immigrants are liars (a stereotype that hurt me because I went under different circumstances, and like many others, I don't need to lie) let's say is true.
What? But THOSE immigrants, older immigrants, were not liars?

Mrs Russell wants to be part of the very same people that wont even turn around to give her a helping hand should she lose everything . I feel so sorry for GLADYS RUSSELL , having a type of mother who justifies HER DESPERATE SOCIAL CLIMBING while destroying her daughters relationships and calling it " MOTHER`S LOVE " . Mrs Russell is no better than the people who force young daughters into ARRANGED MARRIAGES to men they dont even like or love , Bertha comes across as having some traits of a SOCIOPATH and PSYCHOPATH , but i guess it`s all good when you are climbing the latter of Superficial and Appearance .
