I can't believe this was 7yrs ago but its so relevant to me now. Im currently stuck in a high functioning depression cycle. I procrastinate but still get things done, im basically doing enough to survive but not enough to live the life I want. Im stuck in a job i hate, with a boss who is such a bully and i dont even have the will to apply for a new job. I really needed this. Thank you

That is awesome. My dad grew up in the very cold Midwest. The only food they had was what they grew on the farm. Nine kids, and a dad who beat the boys regularly. My mother told me after he died that he would not wear shorts bc of the scars on his legs. He once had milk spilled on him while milking their cow, and wore the same clothes all week. Apparently no other clothes were available. Wore 2 left shoes to high school bc that’s all he had. He pulled himself up, borrowed money from his kind sisters to buy an old car, then again to go to college working full time with a wife and children at home. No student grants. No military benefits, bc he was in a terrible accident and lost part of one hand. Graduated, and went on to have a government career lasting over 30 years. When unmotivated, I try to remember what my father did, and for my heritage. Honestly when I’m feeling lazy or feeling sorry for myself, I don’t.
Even if you are unmotivated, please remember that you-you-are worthy. ❤

Over the years I’ve told close friends of several and to see them succeed on my idea has placed me in an emotional rut. It felt like a breach in confidence going behind my back to spearhead something they never thought of and ending a lifelong friendship over monetary gain without my inclusion. I no longer share my ideas but hoard them silently without action for fear of rejection or failure, especially financial failure. I can truly relate to this interview wholeheartedly.

One thing that I've come up with in recent years is that yea, I never FEEL like eating healthy or exercising and it's so easy (especially when I've struggled with it my whole life pretty much) to just fall back into that comfy zone. The comfort zone is a myth, it's more like a death zone...it will KILL YOU slowly. I say, don't think, not on this type of stuff...just do...do what you know you need to do to improve yourself no matter how you "feel" because otherwise, you will always be trapped in that death zone AKA the comfort zone.

So true! We have to make Jesus Christ #1 in our lives. Making Him our Lord and Saviour is the first step. Then listening to the Holy Spirit and obeying is the next step. You have to want to change into the kind of person who God wants you to be. No one can make you. It's a free choice and gift from above, from God Almighty. Satan will do everything in his evilness to stop you, but you have to listen to the still, small voice, the Holy Spirit. Praise God! ❤

Watched this video twice because she speaks truth. Her video is on repeat because she is exactly right: Motivation is BS. You take the action needed to be successful or you don't. Now affirmations, reinforcements, and programming your brain to do what you need to do and want to do is truth.

  • @wladimirribeiro798

I love your speech, Mel. You gave me real motivation or reminded me of the reasons I have to take action. Well, it may be semantics. I understand the 5-second rules. But about the motivation thing: It's a motive to action. You need to find a motive, or reason to act. You need to remember your reason when you don't feel like doing what you need to do. That's called discipline; doing what you have to do when you don't feel like it. It also requires practice. The beauty of discipline is that you don't need to have it forever, once that thing you don't feel like doing becomes a habit, you no longer need discipline, the auto-pilot takes over. When you say that motivation is garbage, it depends on what that word means to you. Probably the feeling of being motivated is the problem. You may be feeling so motivated because you just listened to a speaker and that changed your mood. You were feeling down and after listening to some "motivational speech" you feel empowered and energetic, enthusiastic and then you wake up the next morning, and that feeling when out of the window because your old behavior is not that easy to change. You need to remember why you need to do what you need to do. You need to remind yourself of your 'motive' to 'action'. Thank you.

This is the Most Powerful Motivation Speech I have heard since 2014 I started listening to motivational speech. I ran over to Amazon to purchase the "5 Second Rule" book immediately. This woman is very intelligent and she understands human behavior entirely. I felt so connected and in tune with all she said because "TAKING ACTION" is the biggest problem I have. I have a list of goals, dream and habits but I talk myself out of them. God Bless You Mel Robbins! Cant wait for my book to arrive!!!

I only just discovered #melrobbins and the #5secondrule just over a month ago. I feel just the same way about her. She is so real, so open, so honest, so direct...yet so caring. Being able to relate to the person talking and teaching you how to change your life goes a long way in helping you do it. I am obsessed with her....my life has changed more in the month than I ever could imagine it would in that time frame!

You are remarkable lady. speaking raw truth as it should be not wrapped up in fancy lace or difficult jargon . The rule about no phone in bedroom is great . I have a smartphone which i switch off 1.5 hour before bed time and left downstairs and only keep the old phone for alarm and emergency calls. I also have a landline one set downstairs and another in the spare room upstairs that number is ex directory so only my close family have it.
The smart phones and access to social media is destroying children's mental health and their social well being.
I only bought the smart phone during pandemic and must say it helped me in keeping well informed on all aspects because the main stream TV news were just foom and gloom ..thank you for lovely inspiring talk.

I work as an AV technician at a local hotel and I had the amazing opportunity to tech the room Mel was speaking in. Prior to having any idea who she was, I set her presentation equipment up and introduced myself. Then something clicked, I had just gotten back from visiting my brother out of state and he mentioned a book to me because i was explaining to him how difficult it is for me to act on my instincts and I am constantly stuck in my head. Turns out, the book was The 5 Second Rule and a typical day at work turned into one of the most inspirational days of my life. So strange how life can surprise us and magically bring important people into our lives when we need it the most. I mean what are the odds Mel Robbins unexpectedly shows up at my work, still cant get over it.

I don't came across this video..I'm just starting to watch it... title make me feel this is the motivation I need right now! Knee injury has turned me into a couch potato for the last 8 months. I feel like I've totally lost myself- and honestly I don't think I had much motivation before that.
I'm ready for this video! Hopefully it helps.

Wow! I just had a big ‘aha’ moment when Mel said “when you put a lot of time and money into something, it’s hard to let go of it”. In my case, I’ve been hanging on for years to an old camper, constantly paying for upkeep and insurance, not having the confidence that it can even get me from point A to B without breaking down....hard to let go of it indeed.

Ha! My mom and stepdad are trying to buy a camper for full time lifestyle security and stability. It’s funny how things in life come full circle, even in unexpected ways with strangers. You could decide to sell and meet someone like my parents or otherwise where it can help you to feel good that you have made this decision.
