From robbing banks to earning a PhD in neuroscience, former hacker Moran Cerf has unique perspective on what makes people tick. In this episode of Impact Theory with Tom Bilyeu, Moran explains the brain science of how self-narrative determines our reality.
Moran is a fascinating blend of a wide variety of disciplines, and this diversity has led him to explore some promising, albeit nontraditional ways of investigating the brain, namely cracking open the skull and peering inside whilst the person is still living. His discoveries have made him a much sought after speaker and leading thinker who's influencing academia and business in equal measure. His innovative theories about the brain have been published in Nature, the highest-ranking journal in the world, and he consults regularly for hit shows such as Mr. Robot and Limitless.
His education is a wondrous grab bag of joy and includes a PhD in neuroscience from Caltech and both an MA in philosophy and a BSc in physics from Tel Aviv University. He's a visiting faculty member at MIT's Media Lab, and was named one of the 40 leading professors under 40.
Moran is the Alfred P. Sloan professor at the American Film Institute where he teaches a screenwriting course on science and film. He holds multiple patents and is a multi-timed national storytelling champion whose talks have garnered him millions of views. He is the professor of neuroscience and business at the Kellogg School of Management and the neuroscience program at the Northwestern university.
In this episode, Moran and Tom investigate the hidden powers of the brain and how they can be harnessed to achieve greatness.

Can I just say, what I love about Tom and his interviewing style, is that he is so secure with himself that he never ever tries to out talk the guest or butt in while they speak. He always listens attentively and is humble. He’s the best interviewer I’ve ever seen bc he gives the floor to the guest and lets them give all the information without interruption. It makes it so enjoyable for me as a listener to be able to watch and learn. Kudos!!

I agree. This is my 1st video from this particular RUclips user & I would love to see more. However, I do not think his repeated use of the "F" word makes his Qs or comments "better" somehow. It's completely unnecessary. Repeatedly using such words make a lot of us uncomfortable & it also makes the speaker sound quite immature. Somehow, I feel that this guy is better than that.
Notice that the *guest was BRILLIANT! Yet he never resorted to ANY such harsh words. If you feel you have to use the words in conversation, that's fine but when speaking in public you should think of your audience. I'd reserve them for when you're NOT doing a show or interview because it simply isn't very professional. That would be my only suggestion to someone looking to improve their show ... or theirselves.

Great point bringing up being a mother. You have zero idea of what you are capable of until you have kids. Obviously there are other things one can endure to find their true breaking point, but that's an example that a lot of people can relate to. That, and how it's suddenly very easy to change deeply ingrained habits overnight if strong emotions come into play.

This was just mind blowing. To think about the potential our minds have. I really like the idea of the present lasting for about a second and a half then it becomes a memory. If you can change that memory to serve you you can change your future. So using my past experience of public speaking (up until now I hated it) and the negative feelings that went along with it and tweaking them into something positive I can restructure my mind into getting rid of that fear. Changing my memories little by little to see the positive in each situation can help eliminate any fears moving forward! This is a top 5 ep!

They even make you hold this rudimentary lie detector they say can gauge this e-motion(or energetic motion) to monitor the pain's dissipation. I am not a Scientologist, but I did read quite a bit of it 30+ years ago, and a lot of it has now become standard pop-psychology which is interesting. Don't join and don't spend money on them, but don't throw the baby out with the bathwater. Some of the early stuff is quite interesting. I remember reading a spiritual book a long time ago where they claimed there can be no pain where you place the light of consciousness, be it physical or mental. Good luck my friend.

9:47 Buddhism says this, there are factors that "make" you choose, it's the conditions that affected you; and again at 40:37 how he explains. Eastern Thought had already seen the mind like this. OMG at 11:25 he starts to say what I"m trying to say... ANd 39:06 is the movie Clockwork Orange when they retrained the bad guys brain by forcing him to watch certain scenes and then electroshocked him....

I believe emotional memories and past choices are stored in the body like a hard drive and the brain funtions as the processor. Life experience and data imput determins function, with repeated patterns becoming hard wired. Unfortunately the language that we have been programmed to think in limits us when it comes to expressing emotional needs or feelings almost forcing us to play the who's right game.
Trusting your intuition rather than listening to all the fear based mind chatter that follows a choice usually proves favourable.
The act of observing effects that which is being observed thus the emotional state of the observer determines the observer's perception of that which is being observed.
Anything that is not love is fear.
    Great talk bless you all.

I thoroughly enjoyed this interview for so many reasons. First, anyone that will say I was wrong is my kind of person. Second, this helped me understand my high tolerance for pain (they called it suffering). I believe suffering is optional. Either way, I believe your relationship to pain will determine your success. This interview is everything!

Loved hearing about the "narrative you tell yourself", and Tom's his beginnings and decision to change his own narrative. So inspiring! Great guest - now I am going to watch every talk and interview he has done.

At 40:46 he is talking about us having various voices in our heads and makes the statement that 'we are not the most important one' by which he means, I think, we as conscious beings (or our conscious voice) . Without wishing to devalue this man's statement at all, the notion of our brain or psyche having multiple voices in it, is not new.
In my transformation (coaching) practice I call them 'parts' - and I will spend quite some time introducing this notion to clients and inviting them to consult with these parts (in a guided exercise) in order to arrive at a solution or plan which is authentic and congruent of who they really are, and one which uses the best of the best of them.
Human unhappiness often comes from a war or discord between these voices or, for want of a better word, from a lack of integration between them. Asking them to communicate with each other, and to agree on something, takes away dissent, causes the host/person to move forward feeling at peace because all the parts are acting in concert, and this in turn obliterates sabotage. You can imagine how powerful the results are when you do this - and the client's sense of integration rockets. When you make decisions about your life in this way, they are many times stronger than they would otherwise be, and doubts are handled very swiftly and effectively.
Many other interesting possibilities emerge too: you can assign sponsorship and mentor roles to some of the parts, invite them to solve your issues for you by morningtime (or any time) or use them for creativity and envisioneering.
It's nice to know that science now supports this truth.

When he talks about the home team advantage and relates it to your brain knowing your mom, your friends are in the audience....he doesn't mention another important influence. I'm talking about the ENERGY that's transmitted from the fans to the players. This is another intangible element, and being a professional music soloist I would say the energy you get from the audience is more important than what the brain knows. Great performers perform better when there is an audience, because the audience wants to be entertained, wants to be thrilled. They don't want you to fail. They want you to be incredible so they can get the most out of their experience.
