This is the kind of song you write when you've really understood a thing. Not everything, sure, but one thing. An emotion, a concept, a craft, an animal, whatever it is. If you've glimpsed the truth of a thing, you write this sort of thing. No idea if it's the whale's soul or our's that Jesse glimpsed here, but I'll be damned if he didn't get it down exactly.
Thought I’d gotten used to being floored by Jesse’s songs then this one hits - on the day I finally return to writing a novel in which a pivotal character is a whale. Even if it’s not the universe giving me signs it’s one hell of a song, thanks man 🤙
The lyrics have always been gold. But it seems to me that the guitar in this one really hits harder than some of the others recently. The talent here is so concentrated there must be a measurable impact to the gravitational pull around him.
This song touched my heart, Jesse, did u write that? It’s so beautiful and means so much to me. My family live on the San Juan islands of Washington State, we have the Whale 🐋 Museum on San Juan Island and 3 resident pods of Orcas. When I first moved here, my husband was born here, and our 3 sons, and things have gotten dire for our resident whales. The San Juan Islands along with the Canadian Gulf Islands are said by many to be one of the most beautiful places on earth. But our whales are dying at an alarming rate. All Orca Whale tour are closed, it’s illegal to take a boat anywhere close to the whales. Most of the whales at Sea World were captured here as babies, same with Free Willy Orca, I pray for the whales 🐋, I want our grandchildren to grow up with our Orcas. I hope the whales survive.
I live outside Victoria BC on Vancouver Island. Years ago we took a bicycle trip to the San Juan Islands and saw 2 pods of whales on our trip, one even while in the harbour on the ferry, friendly and curious...💖(it was probably me they were attracted to 🤣🤣🤣🤔). Used to regularly see whales, porpoises, orcas and mammoth sea lions in the straits around this island when young/young adult. RIP sealife, hope it can also reincarnate.
You can be your own hero, follow Jesus’ example and Speak Truth To Power. Discuss what we are doing to our planet and the people all around it with everyone you know!
@@chiaridude9098 I think I get what you're saying, but being one's own hero is disordered in that it is circular. Following Christ's example humbles us. We submit to His will and put aside our own. We don't want to get confused by what Chesterton called, and righfully mocked as, the god within.
This is the most moving song I’ve listened to in a very long time!! At 70yrs old, around for Dylan, Donavan, Beatles, Prine, Goodman, Willis Allen Ramsey, Jerry Jeff, Lyle, etc, etc, etc!! Now Jesse Welles ! The power of music!!! 🙏
"Where will all the wisdom go?" Damn. The collective knowledge of a mammal species that we know is intelligent and social. Very allegorical to the situation we find ourselves in as humans.
This one brought me to tears man, I have autism and my aunt and uncle played old american folk when i was growing up anytime i visited and this song FEELS like what it was like being 7years old watching documentaries and scouring youtube with my uncle to find old interviews and live performances of greats long gong, trying to make sense of the world through the music. Thank you so much for bringing me back to that, you have something so magical in all of your work
Diggin it! Go where the river takes you, Jesse. But, give Stella a kiss for me. You two had a sweet run!! I can’t wait to see where Miss Gibson takes you. Don’t stop!🎵🎶👍
Might be my favorite yet, I feel truly lucky to be on this ride with you all. We’re witnessing someone very special doing something they were born to do. It’s really something, isn’t it?
honestly my favorite song of yours yet. its not even the message or lyrics though of course those are amazing as well. its the music itself, the chords, the harmonica, and your passionate singing. this song just feels magical in a way that only a few songs ever feel for me. I get a similar feeling whenever i listen to Bob Dylan's "Mr. tambourine man" or the Beatles' "the fool on the hill." I dont know how to describe it, its just one of those perfect songs i know im gonna love and listen to for years. i only wish the song was longer so the good time i have listening didnt have to be over so fast. thanks for making this Jesse, seriously, from the bottom of my heart thank you. you literally created a song thats going to stick with me forever and i already know, just like with so many of bob's songs, im gonna be sitting there 30 years later whistling this to myself and wishing i had even a tenth of the ability you have to write beautiful music. i hope you go far without the downsides of becoming famous and without experiencing the cruel side of the music industry. Good luck on whatever journey this newfound fame takes you.
Nice new guitar, you deserve everything good that comes your way. My ex-best friend was from Fort Smith, Arkansas. She didn’t make it through 2020, I knew she had depression and she was mentally unstable and abusive, so I had to end our friendship in 2005, but I will never forget her and I pray her soul is at rest. She had a hard long life.😢 I love the whales, great song, but the combo of you’re in Arkansas & singing about the whales 🐋, she loved our whales very much.. she jumped the Ferry dock into the Salish Sea where our whales live, we have Orcas here. I’ve watched them swim and leap and play, many times over the last 40 years…
I've been a water-man ever since I was small and my dad took me diving to the point where I was surfing and kiting, so this song speaks to me without lying!....love it!
jesse's music is getting me through losing my whole life right now. you are a voice of a generation brother never stop. fear is the mind killer legit stopped me from giving in to the thoughts.
the cetaceans have been tracking Earth's history and employed as the oceanic saints since time immemorial. What a sacred tribute to their majesty wisdom and spiritual presence. Jesse obviously has deep roots, appreciation and awareness of earth wisdom. Thank you for music that touches that chord in me!
Randomly saw your War isn’t Murder video when it had a few thousand views, subscribed immediately. Very happy with that decision. Your songwriting is great! Please keep them coming
Same here. It’s been really special seeing this run of amazing tunes being released. I feel bad for my friends who haven’t heard me talking about Jesse yet.
Im intrigued by this side of the artist currently known as Jesse Wells. I love the satire and sardonic wit combined with scathing critique of society corporations and government, but this is none of that. I love this as well. I used to feel this way about dolphins
I truly love The Whales, I think it’s one his best songs. I love Whales, especially our 3 resident pods, here in the San Juan Islands. Jesse is a troubadour and best singer songwriter IMHO.
the idea that whales carry knowledge humans can’t understand and have witnessed centuries of history is so profound. it really makes you wonder what will become of these magnificent whales as the world changes. thank you for this beautiful song
Gotta love the sound of a j-45. I love your old blonde Stella, and the other one you played recently has a nice warm tone that set it apart but the Gibson sounds like angels singing.
DadGUM!!! So much great material we are being blessed with!! I've actually been thinking about this topic for awhile, and this is the epitome of what a great folk singer/artist does--SAY WHAT WE'VE ALL BEEN THINKING. Thanks again, Jesse!! Much LOVE!!!
this is so incredibly moving - saw Graham Nash live the other week and he played the beautiful/devastating song "The Last Whale," which is one of my favorites - this is such a great companion piece to that song, love your beautiful plucking and arrangement at the end, really enjoy these videos - thank you so much for sharing your art
Dude, you have such an immense talent. I mean, the performance and knowing when to move away from and toward the microphone, the lyrics, the feel and the vibe and the full creation, all done in such a short amount of time.
Hi Jesse. Your music has had such a great impact on my life. Thank you. I love everything on the recent Patchwork, and I am hoping you will add this song to Spotify also one of these days, it is one of my favourites.
The harmonica is quite healing. To the whole team that jesse works with you are awesome. Also thank you jesse for making hard times feel oddly and unexpectadly better. No matter what you do in the future ill be lucky to have had daily potent and beautiful music to help me through the loss of my sister. Thanks for being you
Jesse I found you on instagram and now I play you for my kids every day. I get the song Walmart stuck in my head all the time and my kids absolutely LOVE your music. Keep playing ❤
so beautiful. Literal tears dripping down my face. you are an amazing talent. wise and evocative lyrics with perfect notes to carry them. thank you for sharing your talent, sir.
My man Welles! Now this is some hippie sh*t I can get down with. On an ole’ sunburst Gibson to boot! Jesse you are an enigma so keep preaching that Kerygma brother!

Jesse whales whales about the whales (edit: also Jesse if you read these know that the closing solo was 10/10)
Hahaha best comment out here!!! Hillarious!
Don't give him any ideas. It's already hard enough finding all of his music with his 50 different pseudonyms

Little bit of that rock background creeping in with this one, nice
Two weeks later and I wake up with "What will become of all the whales?" echoing in my head. This song is an instant classic.

As a longtime fan of Bob Dylan, Cat Stevens, Jim

I dare say he is better than the ones you’ve mentioned.
