I met John Oates in late 80s. He was in Montreal for F1 race. Shared a table with him at Winston Churchill's on Crescent St. Super nice and down to earth guy - we discussed car racing and not music.
The only reason John Oates has a significant reputation is BECAUSE of Daryl Hall. John Oates is a talented singer and songwriter but never would've had the career he's had without his association with Daryl Hall who wrote and sang 75% or more of the songs. There are numerous #1 "Hall & Oates" hits that John Oates neither plays nor sings on. Mugging in a music video or dancing on stage isn't the same as actually writing, singing, or playing on a record. John Oates has been checked out of Hall & Oates for most of the last 30 years. Collecting a paycheck. That makes it comparatively easy for him to cash out. Daryl Hall has been100% in it on every record, at every show, from day 1 until now. For Oates to try to steal Hall's control over how Daryl Hall's own name, likeness, and legacy are represented going forward -- in legal violation of their partnership agreement -- is despicable. This is Daryl Hall's ongoing life's work. Again, John Oates is a talented singer/songwriter but would never have become a big pop star because that's not really what he's great at writing nor performing. John Oates ruined his own reputation by attempting to f**k over Daryl Hall, and getting caught in the act. Laziness and shadiness with a big cherry of entitlement on top is a perfect recipe for ruining his "nice guy" reputation all by himself.
What value is the contribution of inspiration, even it takes the form of John Oats. Are the Beatles any worse off with Ringo in the band, who contributed little in the way of songwriting duties?
@@DrunkenRhinoceros not the same situation, on a couple of levels. 1) The Beatles were a band, Daryl Hall & John Oates were a duo. 2) Ringo played drums on all but a couple Beatles songs. John Oates did not play guitar on hundreds of Hall & Oates songs. 3) While Lennon & McCartney may have been inspired by and writing towards Ringo's drumming style, Daryl Hall most definitely was not writing towards John Oates' guitar style. The records and live bands always included a highly capable lead guitarist who did the heavy lifting (e.g. Chris Bond, Todd Sharp, Caleb Quaye, G.E. Smith, Pat Buchanan, T-Bone Wolk, Paul Pesco, Jimmy Rip, Richie Cerniglia, Jeff Catania, and Shane Theriot). Plus Steve Lukather, Jay Graydon, Dave Stewart, Robert Fripp, and Rick Nielsen, to name a few, who contributed guitar on records only. The only instance where I can think of Daryl Hall writing a song and guitar part inspired by the style of John Oates is "Time Won't Pass Me By" -- and another guitarist played the part on the record. Daryl and T-Bone selected and arranged a cover "What You See Is What You Get" for John on the 'Our Kind of Soul' album. Not a lot of examples in a 50 year career.
@@iconoclassicrecords So bands that used the 'Wrecking Crew' to make their hit records, are they justified in getting all the money and musical credits that session musicians did behind the scenes? @@MrNatural-fq1tq I haven't made a single comment about money. John Oates ruined his OWN reputation by treating Daryl Hall like a personal asset that he could own and operate. Hall & Oates could be raking it in with reunion tours and a Vegas residency, but he burnt that bridge with his whining, pissing and moaning about Daryl being sick of their pop catalogue. He deserves ZERO sympathy.
I Recently attended a Darryl Hall concert he sounded great after all these years. I also saw Hall & Oates back in the early days before they ever achieved massive success. I think I preferred the earlier struggling musicians more than seeing Darryl Hall performing with his backup band performing the hits from the past.
It’s kind of amusing and sad that John Oates says that Daryl Hall can now have the solo career he always wanted. The man is 78. I mean, if he hasn’t found satisfaction in the music industry after 50+ years…
They were a great band for teenagers going through adolescence. They had songs that were amazing and apparently the are great actors. I would have never have thought of the tension between them. It’s sad that they weren’t open about the outlook and like a lot of bands when you know you’re good have admirers, fans and groupies they should have been having fun and gaining trust trust along the way. Looking at them they were opposites in appearance but you would never think they had a wall between them. They should have gone on and become actors. They had me fooled!
Daryl wasn't necessarily the "creative force" behind the duo. He was the frontman but John wrote the choruses to their biggest hits "She's Gone", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch".
I'm fine with the fact that he was the main songwriter behind most of their output. Yet in the past, he always gave John credit but it seems just in recent years, he has wanted to revise the history and take almost all the credit for himself. That's kind of weird.
John Oates is simply a malcontent. Throughout the band’s history and in-spite of Strong earnings of Hall and Oates, John always having money problems. The last attempt of bailing himself out of his problems he went behind Daryl’s back in his attempt to sell the band’s catalog. Mr Hall had to slap a lawsuit on his old partner to bring this to a halt. Any damage to his reputation is a direct result of his actions, not Daryl Hall’s.
@ He’s filed Bankruptcy in the past, sold off his airplane and toy’s. He tried to sell Daryl’s share that’s why he was successful in filing injunction. Google it for yourself
It's sad it has come to this. Great band with some very good songs. I've seen them many times, aways a great show. I really like the Beauty on the Backstreets tour and album.
First heard them in '74 with She's Gone, they seemed very cool in the '70's. The '80's brought hits like I Can't Go For That and Out Of Touch and they sounded great. Daryl's solo albums are excellent.
Humans are complicated and when they tell a story it usually isn't what really happened. it's what they remember, and believe what happened. Besides this most of us suffer from confirmation bias. We fill in the blanks without properly communicating. Most of these problems could have been fixed with proper control of emotions and active listening. It does not matter to me who is right and who is wrong. I am grateful for their incredible music and perhaps both should come together to celebrate this rather than continue to argue about who is right. Just my thoughts
Enjoyed their music back in the day. Unfortunately ego seems to have gotten in the way between the two. Sounds like Hall was the musical genius, and Oates was the supporter and business professional. they need to understand it took the two of them to achieve success. Both need to realize their days left on earth are short and regret will someday enter the picture.
In both of the recent shows that I have seen with Hall and Oates and then just Hall, Daryl constantly complained about the volume of his monitor. He would stop mid-song and complain to the audience that he had a sound guy he would fire after the show. I thought at the first show that it was a fluke. Later, at the second show, several years later, he did the exact same thing. Hall is a great artist. However, the behavior he exhibits live is just insulting to the band, crew, and the audience.
I saw Hall at the Mountain Winery last fall and he sucked. Rundgrun played for an hour then Hall came out sat at the piano mumbled through 4 songs then just stood up and walked off. 200.00 per ticket. NEVER AGAIN
My sister when to one of the last Hall and Oates concerts today. She said Hall acted like he hated being there, stared at the keyboard, wnd had no energy. She went to their concert in the 80s and loved it. Hall is an egomaniac.
@@katyf7090 I saw hall and Oates in San Antonio in about 2017, I was front row center so i could see them both very well. I was too. oates was more professional that day. it's almost like hall had stage fright and had to be toasted to play, he does not seem like that on the RUclips show.
John is pushing 80 and wants to cash out. That is reasonable. Daryl needs to buy John out. I am sure that price is now the issue as I am certain that they both have different values in mind. The lawyers will sort it out. Daryl will buy out John's interests.
This is very sad to see. There is no Hall without Oates and vice versa. Not taking sides. Just hope they can iron out their differences. Simon & Garfunkel were able to do that.
John Oates was the business man in the partnership. He was the one managing all the stuff while Daryl was the better songwriter and singer. Hall could take all that time off and leave it to Oates. Hall could worry about the future while John is weighed down taking care of the last five decades. Oates got tired. He couldn’t do it, anymore. Either he hands it over to someone else or it all collapses. Hence why there is never any discussion of Daryl stepping up to help John out.
This must be Daryl's side of the story, but I listened to a video months ago, about John telling his side of the story, and its way different than this.
John spoke very respectfully of Daryl, and wished him well, and John said that Daryl has achieved his ultimate goal of being a solo artist. Cause John feels that that is what Daryl wanted all along.
Before the news of John trying to sell the music Oates was on a Los Angeles radio station and told Ellen K...someone is going to cry soon. A week later John blindsided Daryl. He's not so innocent
C’mon! Aren’t we a little too old for bickering and hatred?! I hate when rock stars, band mates start getting their ego’s out of wack! At this stage of their life they should be getting along, enjoying themselves and celebrating their success! And I’m not taking sides here!
This video makes it seem that Oates didn't write any of their tunes. Not true. He wrote/cowrote pretty much all their hits. That's not to say that Hall isn't a great talent as well. Too bad. The duo is one of my favorites of all time.
Almost all artists do their best work as young adults. Hall&Oates are no exception. That doesn't mean they should copy their younger selves; it's just the way it is.
Daryl Hall's first two solo albums were a departure from the dual sound, but his last four, not so much. On the other hand, John Oates' six solo albums all sound very different from the dual sound. But it's all good.
@@Hammster69official since Daryl wrote the bulk of the Hall & Oates music and sang lead, that would explain why you can hear a bit of H&O in much of his solo work. Kinda proves the point, doesn’t it …
It's always the same old story They just can't ride out the fame and money There is always one that thinks they're an artist A sneaky one Then the break up....Hall was an ass
This is very biased on the side of Daryl !!!! As the years progressed we could ALL see John being pushed into the role of a backup singer. John said so in interviews they had their time and now it's over
Never sell the catalogue. It only gains value year by year. Kiss sold up but I think it will be worth double in a few years. And I thought Simmons was a business man.😮
This is why only one group leader works. It's not that the others have no say. It's that the group needs structure. A good leader takes good advice from his members, and good members do what their leader says regardless of what those decisions are. You can always disband.
People have different visions for growth. When communication breaks down, bad things happen. Hopefully those bitter feelings from yesteryear can be set aside, and the joy of the music they created can once again be brought forward as it was originally. Imagine how well received a reunion tour would be.
I have always been a Hall & Oates fan. I was 17 in 1980 and loved all their music. In 1985 I moved to New York City and met a guy, a musician who knew both of them. He said John was much more down to earth than Daryl. Regarding Billy Squier, also loved his music. After reading some of the comments about him, I can believe them. He whined like a spoiled baby that the video for Rock Me Tonite ruined his career. I admit he had some kick a$$ music, again I was a big fan of his but blaming a video and the PTB behind it for a career dip is dumb. He seemed so bitter about this, grow up already! Back to Hall & Oates, a pity their relationship came to this but to me they will always be remembered as one of the greatest pop duos of all time. Both gave us some great hits and should be proud of that.
@@yvonnemaisonette9230 I’m assuming you’re not a musician. Everything to general public revolves around lyrics. Nobody ever thinks about the arrangements. I guarantee you Daryl or John brought lyrics to the rehearsal and ideas were bounced back and forth till the final arrangement was done. The sad part about that is you don’t get any credit for that. The arrangement is just as important as the lyrics.

Pretty significant list, no?
@@iconoclassicrecords that has only todo with lyrics. No ones knows how many ideas where bounced back & forth during the arrangement process. No credit is given for that. In the end it all doesn’t matter. The facts are he was part of the duo. I wish someone would hold me back. Especially if it gets me the success that they earned.
I’ve always thought Hall had an out of control Ego.
This is like Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel.
Fun Fact: the name of the duo is Daryl Hall & John Oates. Not Hall & Oates as commonly said. Look at all their album covers if you don't believe.
Q me queres decir c eso ❤😂
It's not Haulin' Oats?
@sopwithsnoopy8779 no, but I like that version!
Not Quaker and Oats?
I enjoyed some episodes of "live at Daryl's house" (in Hawaii)
Yes! really great stuff.
John Oates was lucky to have an extremely super talented partner.
It’s kind of amusing and sad that John Oates says that Daryl Hall can now have the solo career he always wanted. The man is 78. I mean, if he hasn’t found satisfaction in the music industry after 50+ years…
Baba booey has been backpacking since the beginning. Thank Hall for the ride
Daryl's solo music sounds just like Daryl Hall and John Oates, without Oates. John's music is completely different.
They had me fooled!
after the mid 80's they became a lounge act anyways. still touring off the hits from back then
Everybody plays their hits. They'd better. That's what people want to hear.
Daryl wasn't necessarily the "creative force" behind the duo. He was the frontman but John wrote the choruses to their biggest hits "She's Gone", "Maneater" and "Out of Touch".
Y c eso ??????????😂😂😂😂😂
3 songs
@@susangortner3257 John has writing credits on the majority of the songs.
I hate how people see a frontman & think his responsible for everything. It takes more than just a frontman to succeed…
I'm fine with the fact that he was the main songwriter behind most of their output. Yet in the past, he always gave John credit but it seems just in recent years, he has wanted to revise the history and take almost all the credit for himself. That's kind of weird.
Sounds like both of them needed to get over themselves and appreciate what they have or had
@@tommeredith7462 How do you know about John’s financial situation? He was trying to sell his half not Daryl’s….
@ He’s filed Bankruptcy in the past, sold off his airplane and toy’s.
He tried to sell Daryl’s share that’s why he was successful in filing injunction.
Google it for yourself
@@johncruz9357 Oates publicly said that he squandered most of his money.
Why did I watch this?
Enjoyed their music back in the day. Unfortunately ego seems to have gotten in the way between the two. Sounds like Hall was the musical genius, and Oates was the supporter and business professional. they need to understand it took the two of them to achieve success. Both need to realize their days left on earth are short and regret will someday enter the picture.
Hall never said that he made the group but he did and never said that to Oates. Oates has a big head.
I think that John Oats was done and wanted to move on. Nothing wrong with that.
Oates was playing and singing his rear off and was stone cold sober, hall, on the other hand was drunk or high or both, he was goofin and started rich girl in the wrong key and you could tell Oates was disappointed. I was too. oates was more professional that day. it's almost like hall had stage fright and had to be toasted to play, he does not seem like that on the RUclips show.
Hall did not sing all that great either I know he is older but at least stay sober long enough to do the show! you are not a damn kid anymore.
John is pushing 80 and wants to cash out. That is reasonable. Daryl needs to buy John out. I am sure that price is now the issue as I am certain that they both have different values in mind. The lawyers will sort it out. Daryl will buy out John's interests.
Money changes every thing. And often ruins relationships.
While Oates was a good player/vocalist, its obvious who the heart & soul is...Oates maybe the feet, But Daryls a once in a generation talent
Look at the famous duos in entertainment history. More often than not, they split up for similar reasons.
We're watching you- watching your every move ...
This is the very reason why I hate partnerships!!😡
Well. I liked their music a lot.. was listening on cassette tape I have. recently of them in the 80's. Great.
Hall wanted be an artist, Oates wanted to be a business man
Sad.. 😢 sad.. 😢 sad..
Asking permission is a sign of respect.😢 Before to make a self decission.
Clearly a hit job against John Oats...
i hate they split i still listen to their big hits in the 80's
He wasn’t the business manager. In addition, he lost a great deal of his money.
John Oates ruined is own reputation; he stabbed Daryl Hall in the back by trashing their partnership agreement.
Reminds me of Simon & Garfunkel. 😢
Enter Greed. Stage right. Creativity, exit stage left.
It wasnt Oats that betrayed the band it was his mustache
I did not glean anything from this video about how Daryl Hall may have ruined Oates reputation.
Now I know which one is Hall, which one is Oates
The guy Hall needed to get as far as he’s gotten today ( and visa versa) . Otherwise it would’ve been HALL since the 70s , not Hall and OATES
This is heartbreaking 💔
Daryl Hall's first two solo albums were a departure from the dual sound, but his last four, not so much. On the other hand, John Oates' six solo albums all sound very different from the dual sound. But it's all good.
@@Hammster69official since Daryl wrote the bulk of the Hall & Oates music and sang lead, that would explain why you can hear a bit of H&O in much of his solo work. Kinda proves the point, doesn’t it …
Why can't Oates sell his percentage of the catalog? Please advise
It's always the same old story
They just can't ride out the fame and money
There is always one that thinks they're an artist
A sneaky one
Then the break up....Hall was an ass
He sure is.
They just got bored and out of touch with each other.
@@JamesBond-ib9tq its called divorce.
Hall,s ego got out of hand, great musician but very egotistical
Very comprehensive!
His bad reputation has a wide variety of musical guests wanting to go jam with him at his house. Who is going to John's house to jam?
Saw them a few years back they where really good live
Daryl Hall 🤨had been shooting Daryl's Place for TV, playing with many other players & singers.
Abandoned Luncheonett was my first 8 track in 1972 sad but its common look at so many 70s groups split up
This is very biased on the side of Daryl !!!! As the years progressed we could ALL see John being pushed into the role of a backup singer. John said so in interviews they had their time and now it's over
John Oates is the nicest guy and didn't deserve the treatment he received from Daryl. So unnecessary and disloyal on Hall's part.
Another fan summed it up perfectly, a Genius and a guitar player!
@@davidmack4185 I actually prefer Daryl's SOLO music to the songs of their youth!
You do realize the guitar player has writing credits on the majority of the songs.
@@johncruz9357 While that is true, Daryl wrote the majority of the songs.
Who will haul oats now ???
Nothing lasts forever.. Get over it and move on into the future
Oates is a second tier musician who was in the right place at the right time. Hall is a once in a generation titan who was going to be in the hall of fame no matter who his partner was
IMO the biggest mistaken Daryl made was to put John's name in the group. I didn't think John was talented Daryl was the handsome guy with the voice.
I agree, I think if you feel stagnated, you feel dead . How could Hall stay in that and slowly die ?
Life is too short get along get a life.
I met Daryl in the early 2000's in Atlantic City. Ugh.
STOP THIS :::::THIS IS A PRIVATE SITUATION !!!!!!
I saw Hall & Oates in the early 1990's. They were gigging at an Amusement Park in Northern VA. I was shocked. Then Again I also saw Wynonna Judd gigging there as well.
It sounds like how things went for Spinal Tap. By the end, they were doing retirement parties in airport hangers.
Reputation still intact. Narrative is NOT true.
their dork songs were played non stop around 1982 at the expense of far better artists.
AGREE- Their perspective on life and women during their heyday was juvenile but with a production sheen.
I didn't like halls solo work.change can be bad
Geez, they had there era back then and times changed. They just toured the last few years until John wen't after half the catalog causing the real devide. Daryl was not ready to sell what was 3/4 his?
I wonder what would have happened if Daryl Hall would have become lead vocalist of Van Halen? Eddie Van Halen begged him when David Lee Roth left Van Halen.
