The bug you saw looked to me like an earwig. From what I know they are really beneficial because they tend to eat pests 😁

    • @sinine1100
      @sinine1100 3 года назад +3

Earwigs eat decaying vegetation - dead leaves, rotting bark etc. So ... not beneficial, but not really harmful, either. They won't eat your live plants.
      Centipedes will eat pests.

@@sinine1100 Earwigs in the garden eat and destroy flower petals. They don’t just eat dead matter, they eat young buds, leaves and seedlings and do great damage. Woodlice on the other hand eat only dead matter.

@@coolkingakram. I didn’t say they didn’t have a right to exist, Did I? Read my comment which just points out what damage earwigs do. I didn’t advocate killing them did I? But if I find an earwig in my orchids or my house, I am definitely putting him outside! Thank you.

Wow. I am glad that that your Rhynchostylis retusa survived! It's the state flower from where i am. I have a total of 10 spikes this year😙
Looking at your's, i think it is big enough to bloom next year(also fingers crossed for the Princess Mikasa 💚)... It might just be a tad bit too stressed for this year. Another thing i experienced is that the more light and water that I gave mine, the more thicker and longer the spike grew.

It was very kind of the owner of the garden center (was he the owner..?) to give you that Vanda and I really hope that you can save her!!
I don't understand why, but old orchids with spent blooms are thrown away in garden centers in my area. I don't necessarily want free orchids, but why throwing them away?!? They could sell them at a cheaper price, but no, directly in the trash. The only exception are expensive orchids (Cattleyas and Vandas are the most expensive in garden centers, where I live), which -I believe- are sent back to the nurseries or something like that.
Anyway, i just hope that this white Vanda can survive!!! I cannot have Vandas, I have not enough light in my apartment, even with artificial lights...

The stores in my area treat orchids and other flowering plants like they are cut flower bouquets. They don’t intend for people to grow them as plants, just to look pretty for a while and throw away.

Was visiting an aunt in the tropics and was walking with her thru her gardens and i saw a large vanda growing on a tree fern so i said that is very large. She walked over to it and snap the only keiki off and gave it to me. I was horrified but thank her profusely. Horrified cause it only had 3 leaves and no roots. Brought it home and put it in moist sphagnum and after almost a year i got a root growing. Now its up to 7 leaves and a basket of roots so there is always hope for the one with no roots.

Good morning 🌞 very informative video Dani you do such a great 👍 job on with your vandas mine are doing ok in the root department but no bud ever I don’t know what I’m doing wrong I feed with rain mix and use distilled water also check the ph that is around 55 to 65 and the ppm is from 250 and well in the summer usually 350. Anyway thanks for sharing and happy growing

Hi Danny, I hope that they both survive and that you will show them again in a few months. My vanda sanderiana takes too much shelf space but I cannot bring myself to dump it. Thanks Danny this video is instructive. About your memory not being what it you used to be, sorry to let you know that it will probably get worst in the next 60 years, but hearing aids are getting better every year. Mine are due to be replaced soon.

Hi Dani, great video. I am a true beginner and love your videos. I work in healthcare primarily microbiology and although not with plants I can tell you smells like you just encountered can be very informative. When culturing wounds doctors will often ask does it smell like a barnyard? Why ? Because that is a dead giveaway that the bacteria involved is an anaerobe , a bacteria that grows in the absence of oxygen like in deep wounds or I am thinking perhaps an orchid stuck in a basket with heavy soil or growing media very dense and wet keeping out the oxygen or most of it . I think stem rot correlates with something like gangrene on a human limb. Usually the barnyard culprit is a Bacteroides sp and gangrene also a foul smelly one is Clostridium. I hope this gives you some ideas to explore.

I'd like to chip in and say the bug looked very similar to a type of wingless barklouse. I can't name specific species, but most feed on fungi and organic debris, and some apparently will eat algae. There's a good chance it was a harmless stowaway grazing on that lawn of algae, and nothing to be too concerned about for your orchids.

Hi Danny. Is it true the brighter the light you put your Phaleanopsis shcleriana, the more fragrant it is? Also I have a Phaleanopsis orchid and in between one of the leaves I think there was a flower spike, but it stopped growing; any suggestions?

Thank you for all the detail! I have 2 orchids & have recently realized they have rot going on. One is much worse than the other. I took all the rotted material off and I have some root pieces left that are separate from the plant. Just roots. Can anything be done with these pieces to stimulate growth and make them create a plant? Thanks!

I bought 3 trichopilias and they were packed with algae, moss and liverwort, the pseudobulbs where all buried and poor leaves have white stains, I want to believe because lack of light due to algae on leaves 🧐, it took me a whole Sunday to clean them, kill the snails, worms and centipedes I found and repot them 😖, now they look better, but I still keeping eyes on them.

@missorchidgirl I have vanda doing not so good. I am having issues trying to get the best info for it. It has been dropping leaves consistently since December and no longer has much in the lines of roots. It is still growing leaves and had 7 keikis starting on it, I have 4 of them left now as the other dried out. It also looks as though it has new roots starting further up the stem. Can you do a video on how to care for keikis on a vanda when in the super small stages? As idk if it’s ok for them to get wet or not. I am soaking vanda in bucket for maybe 10 mins as it has not roots. But idk if it’s ok for the keikis to get wet as I lost 3 of them. One seems lose as I touched it and it felt unstable. They’re super small. Any help would be great.

@missorchidgirl Hello! Please if you could answer my message. I’ve tried to look up info on the internet and watch some of your videos but can’t seem to find the right answer. I have a Cattleya I purchased and the leaves are real leathery. I also place her on my east window where she gets the light she needs. I didn’t put too much moss in the medium and I water it when the pseudobulbs are wrinkly. But I’m thinking maybe it’s not retaining enough moisture? I’ve checked the medium and everything is okay.
