Danni thanks to your advice I actually set up a proper Phal nursery with lights, slated pots, medium, Feed Me fertilizer: all rePotme. Has changed my orchids lives! Also, their customer service is exceptional.
Thank you! This is something I’ve been struggling with because my orchids (Phalaenopsis) are recovering from root rot,(old medium) and dehydration. I want to make sure they get the water they need without doing too much.
I’ve been growing orchids for over 20 years and have found this RUclips channel the most informative and easy to follow. Believe me, you’ll never stop learning and I can’t think of a better way than to watch Danny, she’s a wealth of knowledge. Cheers and happy growing.
As I am from the tropical belt - my orchids are outdoors (away from direct sunlight), but they do get the rain water whenever it rains. Apart from that, I soak them for about 10 mins in a rain water bath to which I add a little weak fertiliser. Every two weeks or so, I flush them with plain rain water (which I collect). If it rains for days on end, I do not bother to water them, and they seem to love it. I have no blooms as yet, as most of them are thriving babies - or dormant. I only started growing orchids from around Sep/Oct last year.
I always get very confused about watering or not when I see condensation on the pot. Since spring began, I started noticing lots of condensation on the pots and so I put off watering for much longer than usual, and now my orchids are definitely dehydrated (leaves are starting to get a bit limpy). The condensation just throws me off. Do you have any advice on this? For now, I think I will ignore the condensation and just look at the medium/roots.
First off, I have a number of hobbies and am constantly seeking information on all of them. You are by far one of, if not the best, instructional video maker I've come across. Love the detail and depth you go into. I can honestly say I would still be failing miserably at orchids likely were it not for you. Do you have a process for proactive treatment of pests, other than quarantine, on new orchids that you get in? Quarantine is ideal except that I have so many plants there's not really much of an area to quarantine, at the moment. I noticed a couple videos where you spray peroxide on the roots in case they have snails, but my instinct would be to treat the leaves as well just to kill off any spider mites, etc., that may have hitchiked on them. Is there a reason you don't? I'd love to see a video on that subject.
Ahha!!!, this gives me courage to try orchids again, last time was 20 years ago and there was no internet and mine were generally in clay pots with bark only, made it impossible to know when they were dry or nearly dry, IIRC I was watering most of them every day, at least in the summer, Yikes !
I really enjoy your videos! I was given an orchid as a gift so I’ve been watching your videos for help with keeping it alive. I repotted it and the roots were pretty bad. The orchid itself is healthy - firm leaves and no flower drop - but the roots remain awful even after a month. No green, plump roots at all. I’m waiting to see what it does. Wish me luck!
I love your videos and now have enough courage to try different orchids besides phals. What are your average pot sizes? I love how tidy you keep your collection
Just with orchids it's difficult when you can't feel in the center of the pot. Was going to water my work orchid and then i decided to look at the bottom. It has a pot that has goes a bit in to airate it at the bottom. Felt in there and was still wet, but the outside of the pot looked dry. My orchids at home it's become more difficult since i changed the medium, its not as chunky and can't see most of the roots.
Thanks for your vedio. I found it's hard to check my medium is dry or not. I have Phalaenopsis. I used clay babbles and it usually dry on the surface. Middle and bottom look moist not wet. I don't know should I leave it until all completely dry and water it or just spray some water on the top or I xan water it to make whole pot wet? It's difficult.
Hi Miss Orchid, I am so impressed that you can help the beginner learn to take care the orchids. I have a question about my one orchid. What should I do now to save this one. It looks yellow on the leaves.
I bought an orchid for myself on Mother’s Day with 6 petals. Presently, three of the petals are droopy. I water once week. Will I lose all the petals?? If should I keep the stick part for new growth.
Love this! Just got a paph ho chi minh and a mounted sophronitis cernua (very different water demands), so it's helpful to learn about watering. Have you ever tried water culture?
Whenever I repot a new orchid in moss, bark, pumice...I get little blue dots forming in the pot after a couple days. Are these fungal spores? Or are they harmless :( it's happened so many times. Can you shed any light on this Danny? Help! Sos
The medium doesn't dry equally throughout. About what percentage of the medium should be "dry" before re-watering? Or does it matter if some of the medium is wet and some isn't?
Orchid girl..!! I really need help on my plant the flowers are dying but my leaves and steams are still super green and strong.. the buds fell off and I’ve been watering and have changed my soil 😫☹️
Hi, bud blast can occur from various reasons, starting from wild temperature swings, to stress of sorts, or acclimation periid. So just think about what hsppened recently with the orchid and if it had reason for stress. If the orchid is healthy, all is well, it will rebloom next season ☺️
Your videos are incredible! So easy to understand and sooo informative. So I've accidentally been growing a BEAUTIFUL orchid in a plastic folgers coffee container, I've drilled holes and water weekly, shes losing her flowers after 2 months of full blooms and growing a ton of new roots, leaves and looks like kekies? lol, I'm just getting anxious leaving her in that container and I've changed the medium maybe once? Should I just leave her be?? Literally my pride and joy lol
I’m so glad I never bought into the “ice hack” it’s completely illogical and nothing like the native environment of the orchid. I’m glad you’re debunking this misinformation
I also noticed the phalaenopsis the is not on active growth are the ones that rots whenever i repot them, i repot them as close to the media type as possible and i water everytime the moss dries but why the rotting of roots continues?
Hi, I would look into transplant shock and also consider the quality of the medium you are using. It may be that these orchids are already quite sick when you purchase them, case in wich the old roots may die off, but new, healthy roots will be produced ☺️
Really like you saying that watering orchids is not a one size fits all situation. I'm going to be so much better at taking good care of mine now. Will be watching so many more of your excellent videos.
This could be due to transplant shock, especially if the previous medium was more water retentive than the new medium. If you take it out of sphagnum moss for example and repot it into only bark, then this will be a big change and the roots might desiccate. If you do this kind of repotting, it's best to keep the new medium more moist so the orchid can slowly adjust versus a sudden change. If you can wait until new roots are growing to repot then that will reduce the changes of transplant shock.
Hi Christopher, whenever you want to repot a phalaenopsis, try to wait until you see the root tips are actively growing, that is, they look very green or pinkish and shine. Then they will adapt very well. It's also in most times better to repot after the flowers are gone - normally the roots start growing at this point. Just wait for the most roots to start actively growing, then they'd adapt without any problems. You might still loose some old roots, but that's normal. Happy growing!
The flowers on my orchid have dropped. I have what must be the best lighting condition for my orchid which is a filtered light in the bathroom which receives the morning sun. I not only get that soft filtered light, but the orchid gets the moisture from the shower. What I really, really need to know is when to transplant my orchid because the beautiful green roots seem to be about to burst the container it is in. What do I do and how do I do it? Please help.
