I am so excited. I rescued some Phalaenopsis orchids off a clearance rack at Lowe's. A mini one that after it started growing new roots and leaves I attached it to a pigmy palm in my front yard. It made it through hurricane Ian, though our community. lost more than 250 trees. Last week I noticed 2 flower spikes and today it bloomed gorgeous orchids. The 5 lavender rose outer petals have burgundy veins and cream edge and the center is burgundy rose with a golden center. Two of my other larger rescue orchids each have a developing keiki leafing out. Thank you for all your videos. I have learned how to care for the orchids all from you. I just love growing orchids.
It would be awesome to be able to grow orchids outside on trees like that. Unfortunately I live in a dry mountainous climate. It's cool to here it can be done though, thanks for sharing. I'm glad it survived the hurricane lol
I'm pulling my hair out. I bought 2 orchards and it plainly says 3 ice cubes once a week. Since I'm new at this i did it. Those places 5 are now flowerless so i cut them back as they showed how It also says to spray you plant with fertilizer and put the plastic pot in water for a minute. I just watched your video and started crying. Ugh. Do you have those instructions you gave do i can print and have something to follow.
What gets me is , they’ll argue till they’re blue in the face that ice on an orchid works. Even after you demonstrate to them what ice does to cells, they’ll still insist that cos their “insert cousins brothers best friends cleaner” says they do it and it works, or the label on their orchid(from a place that produces thousands of baby orchids every week and therefore just “might” have a vested interest in you buying more orchids cos the first one died)says to do it, then they’re gonna do it. And it MIGHT work…….for a while, till the damage gets too severe or the severely stressed plant gets infested with bugs or disease. And then ofc, it’s the bugs, or disease that killed the plant……not the ice *headdesk*
I love your videos, I’m addicted to growing orchids and something that I noticed is that the placement of the orchid is very important. If I get a rescue orchid off a clearance rack that is outside and gets lots of sun and rain, keep that orchid outside. I’m from central Florida for reference.
Yes I had a friend that had at least 100 orchids attached to her chain link fence year round. They were absolutely stunning. She did nothing to them and she said that’s her secret. Location- Honolulu Hawaii
I'm learning so much about orchids from you. I bought an "ice cube" orchid from Wal-Mart. It didn't make sense to me to use ice cubes on a tropical plant. Then I found your channel. Still trying to save this poor thing.
@animalheart1000 melt ice in a cup & measure it. Use that amount water to give plant a drink. But must be checking often and adjust as needed. Some will listen. 😅😅
Thank you! I have made several of these mistakes, sadly, meaning well. Hope I can rescue my 17-year-old orchids. I have just repotted them in better gravel. Now I need to watch your other videos to make sure I am taking care of them the way they need it.
Your orchids are all so beautiful, I never get that many flowers. I’m looking forward to your next video which I hope will help me. Thanks for sharing all your knowledge with us 🌺
I'm going to cut half of my orchids in summer because the thought of having no blooms this summer is just too sad. So I'm going to be half a good person!
I'm a new beginner. I had been told about putting ice on them. That doesn't make any sense. Seems like you would freeze the plant. Thanks for addressing that!
Got upset when I saw you were leaving 😢 until I saw your video. Congratulations on your 10 years. So happy to finally see you. You have a beautiful voice and educational manner but it was a little frustrating not to meet you .. so to say... It was so nice to finally see the face that goes to the voice, and I was not disappointed 😅 Thanks so much for letting us see (meet) you! 🎉
I was recommended this channel through a plant group I am in. I bought my first orchid and after 3 weeks the leaves began to droop. I was doing the ice cube method and had no idea it was actually damaging to the plant. I thought it was weird to use ice cubes because plants don't like cold. I now know better and will be watering my plants without the ice cubes from now on! And I will be purchasing some fertilizer in the coming days for it. Thank you so much Missorchidgirl!!
Excellent presentation!!!! Those who insist on their own opinion will eventually revisit the channel for solutions to their mistakes….. Thanks so much Danni!!!!
As always Danny, your advice is excellent! I can attest to the overblooming mistake! I was so excited when I finally learned enough about orchids from you that I was able to not only kill orchids but rebloom them. I was so pleased with myself that I let my one phalanopsis bloom for over a year straight and not did that poor orchid pay the price. It’s big beautiful leaves started yellowing and dropping and the rest were floppy and slightly dehydrated and grew back smaller. So I did it-chopped the flower spike. The new spike is definitely smaller with less blooms but it is starting to recover. I will NOT make that mistake again! Thank you so much for all you do!! Btw, sent you a super thanks 😊
Did you use your flower stem which was cut off to propagate new baby orchids in Poland Spring cut in 2 halfs Gallon Water container to use bottom with a little water for humidity and roots and the top to keep it moist between daily misting?
This video made me realize that one of my orchids had botrytis when I bought it! The greenhouse just told me it was white with black spots…when it bloomed a few weeks ago, the flowers were all white and I was wondering where the black spots went. Now I know the poor plant was sick! At least now it’s very happy and healthy!
Thanks for explaining the ICE CUBE watering method, I’ve had my plant going on two weeks now. I chose Sunday to be the watering day, not knowing better, I used ice last Sunday. My plant was marked down to $4.50 at HD. Then I found your videos, my plant is outdoors under the patio umbrella, we’re having high humidity and temperatures in the 90’s. The flowers now are spent & I was searching what to do with the stem. Hopefully I can keep this plant alive. I will be checking the roots and medium & if any thing is needed I will order it. 😊
Thank you for the excellent information. I am a novice orchid grower and your information has helped me. I especially like the part about what kind of media to grow an orchid in. I think mine was too fine, I am now going with bigger pieces that drain better based on your information. And the fertilizer info. was much appreciated.
Thank you Danny For your helpful advice This video was put by premium RUclips on my face Yesterday I repotted all my new orchids The flowers all fall off I cut all the branches So the orchids has time to rest I changed the medium To plain bark I just have to buy A suitable fertilizer Hoping these orchids Will give me more beautiful flowers next time . Thank you for all the advice here . More success and abundance to this channel.
Your Orchids are so pretty i rescued a walmart orchid last year that was in bad shape and its doing great got my first spikes this year just in the past few days it opened the first bud on it! your videos are amazing thanks for making them for us! 😊
Hi Danny when I order fertilizer is it the one feed me my second time ordering im so excited. I live in Florida and my orchards are outside thank you so much Danny 💗
My orchid blooms 9 months of the year, but i don't cut the flower spikes at all. I just let the orchid do whatever it wants to do. Now i wonder if i should cut the spikes down so it can't bloom from November through August again next year. It has been beautiful this year, and i really love it, but i want to repot it... It started budding in November, which i was not expecting, bloomed before Christmas... And those flowers are still thriving, though I'm beginning to see the first signs that the December bloom is preparing to drop, but it ALSO grew new buds in early spring from the end of one of the spikes, and bloomed a second time in March/April. So the current situation has both some 6-7 month old flowers, and some 2-3 month old flowers. It does seem to like the light i give it. It's in a south facing window with an awning, so the room is pretty bright throughout the day, but it only gets a bit of direct sunlight in the early morning and late evening. I want to become a better orchid parent and eventually buy more orchids, but i want to make sure i understand everything about the one i have before i tackle multiple plants.
Hi Danny! I absolutely love your videos about orchids and I am obsessed about them. I actually am starting a beautiful collection of orchids. I currently have two phalaenopsis, a den phal and a cattleya. I had some concerns in regard to two of them. And I wanted to reach out to you, my orchids guru, for advice. First of all, I noticed that my cattleya’s medium is FULL of algae. The plant, however, looks really really healthy. It is very bushy and full of roots, but I saw in one of your videos that algae can be toxic to orchids. At the same time, I am afraid of repotting because of how sensitive are cattleyas roots. I wonder if there is like any product that I can add to kill the algae, like peroxide. And lastly, one of my phals, which actually was already in the place we are living in right now, had like a really bad medium, it was not even moss, but like thatch or Cosme thing of the sort. The orchids was in really not good shape, so I repotted it and found that all the roots within the medium were dead. She only had a few arréala roots that I put into the new pine tree bark medium. I water her pretty much everything day because it is still the summer here and the medium dryers pretty fast. However, even when I water her, her leaves remain all flappy. Only her two newest leaves stay hard. Do you have any advice??? Would anyone else like to share some ideas that have worked for you? Sincerely, Leo
Hey, I know about the floppy bottom leaves because that's what mine had but they'll stiffen over time after you water them and/or give them a grow light or a little more light than your already giving them. I also have a cattleya but mine isn't developing mold but you can look into fungicides to see if they can treat orchids. If your like me and have a lot of different types of plants it's best to have at least 3 different fungicides because not all fungicides treat all ornamentals. Hope this helps.
Hello Dany I live in Canada and my orchids stay in the house all year round can they flower in the summer instead of winter because right now the leaves are growing.Only 1 is in bloom.Thank you for your videos I’ve learned so much on Orchid care
I like to fertilize my orchids using water from my aquariums. About food scraps - I tried this once with a money tree when I was like 10. I thought I was clever coming up with a way to compost directly into the plant pot. I didn't see it on social media, it was just my childish idea. It took forever to break down, of course caused mold, and eventually I killed it by overwatering. Beginner mistakes, but I never tried that one again 😅 Now I have about 30 houseplants including 2 phal orchids that are pretty healthy. I've learned from my mistakes.
Thank you Danny for the info video. I cannot find where the Q&A section is 🤷♂ so will try here. I recently got a young Phal orchid Charming Snow '0410'. She has 5 sets of leaves but she is still very small compared to a mature plant. Leaves are like 5-7cm long. To avoid pest and rotting I repotted it because she was planted in a moss and came from the nursery abroad. The problem is that she already has a Spike. I would call it 'desperate' bloom. The root system is not bad but I still don't think she is ready for bloom. I have one similar Phal orchid since last Autumn. Same size, same condition and I also repotted it stright away. It also had the spike and I left it alone. During Autumn and Winter, she did not grow any bigger and the spike grew just like 10cm. It is spring now and time to grow, so last week, I decided to cut the spike. Was that a mistake to sacrifice the first time bloom on a young plant?
Curious if fish tank water would be good for my orchids it is great for outside flower garden. I have not tried it my orchids are gorgeous. But starting to fade flowers since Mother’s Day. Your channel is amazing. Thanks❤
Hello Enjoyed your info on what not to do. I grow my orchids outside. They have been in pots which I have in pot containers (holders) on my fence. They were facing east. I live in Florida on the Atlantic Beach side. I do fertilize them every month or so but basically just leave them alone. I only have to water them if we have gone several weeks without rain. Recently I had to move them to a north facing fence. They no longer have continuous protection from the sun. Now the tree they are under has lost all of it’s leaves. They are putting out flower stems and seem to be ok in this new location. I recently cut off some leaves that were yellow. I appreciated your info on leaving the leaves until the are dried and easily removed. I have probably damaged many orchids by cutting them. Question Do you have any suggestions for growing orchids out of doors and is it better to leave the blooms on the plant until they are done?
I’ve might have made a mistake here but I got orchid fertilizer sticks n I broke them in half n put them in my orchids n they are doing fine for now Dani so far so did I do good
When is the right time to fertilize blooming orchids. Thank you for the video. Learned alot. My daughter gave me 5 new plants .im anxious to keep blooming they are beautiful and full right now. Store bought. Large plants. And i have 5 mini plants that are just leaves. No steams yet. Hopeing to get them to grow steams. To beable tobloom again .thank for any help.
I've used leftover cinnamon bits (the ones that didn't grind fully) at the base of soil-covered plants to deter pests without an issue, though I've no idea how that would work on an exposed root plant. Same answer cloves.
You probably have this in one of your videos, what about foliar fertilizer sprays? I've used up the Miracle Grow orchid spray and was thinking about mixing my own with my orchid fertilizer concentrate
I thank you Danni for advice about not trying to reblooming by cutting the stem. I've been arguing with my husband about that. My 8 phals. Are growing new leafs like crazy. His 1 phal. died.
Hi. I just bought my orchid. It’s in a decorative pot with no plastic pot inside. I took it out and it’s on very wet moss. I heard you can’t repot orchids while in bloom. Is it true? What I did I took some of the wet moss out and add some bark into a plastic container. I’m hoping it will survive. It has great roots though, a few soft roots which I’ve taken out. Do you think my orchid will survive? Thanks.
Hi Dani, I need help with my orchids. I purchased many orchids on line and none of them have bloomed. Even the really healthy ones have not given any flower spikes. I don't understand why. I am feeding them. It has been three years now. I just don't know what I am doing wrong. I have lost many orchids. Out of 100 orchids of different types, only 2 have given me flower spikes.
Danni. I've had an orchid 3 years that has grown 4 new leaves and now has 4 finger like roots growing upward. I'll these " fingers" become blooming stems??? It has not bloomed since it was lifted to me. I fertilize and water as you advisef.
Thank you Danni for an excellent video. Very well done! I am getting ready to repot my small orchid. Where can I get some of the clear plastic cups with the holes in them? I need to go up one size. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Carol, orchid newbie
I have two questions please. First is the aerial roots. They are a couple feet long and so many. What do i do with them?. Next i have a stem that is producing a new plant on it. Should i wait a few more months and then remove it to transplant into its own pot?
Great video ,,just wondering iam in Vancouver Bc in zone 8 b we get a lot of humid here ,I’ve been watering my orchid once a week but maybe that’s to much but it looks good I will test it next week to see what I meter says then I’ll know if I need to water, also how often do you fertilize I’ve been fertilizing every watering like once a week and when do you stop thanks for sharing the videos
can you use real aloe on the leaves ? I have been doing this for years. Also make a garlic water totally strained that I use sometimes .... what's your thoughts
I was gifted a small pot of 3 little wee orchids which are in their little plastic cups with some bark. But those are planted/surrounded in soil. They no long have flowers but the leaves are nice and healthy. Is it the soil thats wrong here, or a fertilizer needed? Thanks
THANK YOU ORCHID GIRL. You give such useful advice and it is always well thought out and accurate. I really liked this video. I didn’t know to not let my orchids be in continual bloom. I am going to cut the bloom stems this summer and enjoy a harvest of blooms next winter. Thank you again. I have watched you for years.
I’ve had my orchids for a while now. I’ve been fertilizing with Espoma orchid fertilizer. But it says (Bloom) so I figure it’s not formulated for total plant health? Idk. But I want to continue using organic fertilizers for my orchids. Do you have any good suggestions?

Thanks Danni, for addressing the ice cube subject. You don't know how many times I've had to discouge and educate people about this topic.

Right Angel my girlfriend put ice in her phal...she didnt listen to me and her baby died last year....but I think she got it now

Curious if fish tank water would be good for my orchids it is great for outside flower garden. I have not tried it my orchids are gorgeous. But starting to fade flowers since Mother’s Day. Your channel is amazing. Thanks❤
Hello
Enjoyed your info on what not to do.
Question
Do you have any suggestions for growing orchids out of doors and is it better to leave the blooms on the plant until they are done?
I’ve might have made a mistake here but I got orchid fertilizer sticks n I broke them in half n put them in my orchids n they are doing fine for now Dani so far so did I do good
I’m very successful with keeping my orchids in a few cm water all the time, for years 😊
When is the right time to fertilize blooming orchids.
Always good reminders from you Dani!
How about tea leaves and coffee grounds? My orchid is outside under a tree planted in the ground. I live in Sydney Australia. It seems happy so far.
Thank you Danni for your fantastic help!! You know so much about orchids and it’s fantastic to learn from you!
Thanks MOG!
Thank's for sharing, Danni... 🤗🤗
What about watering with "banana water?"
Fanastic video as usual
Also wanting to know what variety this is!
Great video❤
Could you please, please make a video on how to take care of pansy orchid (the one with big beautiful flowers and thin long leaves).
I thank you Danni for advice about not trying to reblooming by cutting the stem. I've been arguing with my husband about that. My 8 phals. Are growing new leafs like crazy. His 1 phal. died.
Can you demonstrate hoz to cut from the base to not bloom
Thanks.
New to Orchid care. Thank you. All my Orchids are $50.oo. or more. I have 11. I'd like to have them for more than 1 week.😮😅😅😅😅😅
I don't know where you live but if it's on West Coast of U.S. you can find them for $10 at Grocery Outlet. Which is why I have so many.
Great information! Thank you. What kind of orchid is that beautiful pink spray you are holding, early in the video at the 3:00 minute point?
Using a funnel allows you to water the orchid more precisely. 😊
Hi, you mean a watering can? 🤔
Danni. I've had an orchid 3 years that has grown 4 new leaves and now has 4 finger like roots growing upward. I'll these " fingers" become blooming stems??? It has not bloomed since it was lifted to me. I fertilize and water as you advisef.
Great Advice
Very useful info Thank you!
Thank you for the great advice. I want to put my orchid on drift wood. What type of wood is best? Oak? Or what do you recommend?
Is it ok to repot while in bloom?
Where do you buy plastic planter holders without holes?
Hi Dani,
What is your opinion on using black tea and baking soda as a remed
can you use real aloe on the leaves ? I have been doing this for years. Also make a garlic water totally strained that I use sometimes .... what's your thoughts
When do you cut the stem? I have 3 orchid plants that never bloomed a second time.
I cut the flower stem after the orchid drops its last flower.
How do u use cinnamon on your orchid please I’ve got three orchid but I not very good in caring for them.👍
Awesome video but I would liked it if you could have just pointed out where to cut I was not sure
Hi! Do you grow any orchids in water? I would love tips on that and how you can fertilise them.
Hi, no I would not recommend growing orchids in water 😊
Do you fertilize your orchids with each time you are watering them?
My orchid is 18 months old has never stopped flowering water once a week from cold tap.
