I found a Vanda, it had been thrown away with 2 others. Just this one came back to life in 4 - 6 years, just making leaves and resting. It was in my kitchen, where I watch struggling plants. There is a plant light bulb on the ceiling so it got more light, automatically in winter. When I heard that they like more light, I changed it's placement from NE to South. I took it out of a pot, poured the bark in the bottom of a pretty crystal vase and placed the Vanda in the vase opening on top. I gave the bark some water in the bottom for humidity. The roots just hang in the air in the vase.
The Vanda loved it. It is trying to bloom. It has lots of roots, good leaves and now, lots of spikes. I will really enjoy seeing the unknown surprise flowers, their form and color. Where I am, I have never seen a Vanda in bloom. The leaves are very dark, maybe it will be purple. 💜

That’s an interesting way to grow a Vanda😀 I have a Vanda , 2 Ascosenda and a Rynchostylis in pots. They already came potted when I bought them in the nursery. They were in a net pot with large bark chips, and this net pot was in a larger regular plastic nursery pot. I keep them outside in the summer but the Vanda poses a problem in the winter when I have to keep her in the house. She has a mass of aerial roots which hang outside of the pot. Watering is a hassle. I will be trying the bag method 😀 Great tip 👍

I live in Miami and I bought my first bag baby a few weeks ago. A Dendrobium Spectabile. I can’t wait to see it bloom. 🤞 I have 3 baby vandas in pots. After seeing this, I’m rethinking trying to put my 2 large vandas in pots. This might be the only time I’m glad for FL humidity. I can grow my vandas outside.

Very interesting video, thank you! I observed similar developments with my different kinds of vandas, as all my orchids do have to sit in a pot with anorganic medium- bare root does not work for me at all (Central Europe). Up to now I was lucky with a plant shop vanda, and the hybrids like the Bangkok Sunset usually work great in pots

I have a puchara delight and I decided to pot mine and I noticed it was having a little trouble acclimating to the bark and sphagnum moss but it is definitely growing new roots in the pot I’m glad you made this video now I will have to look out for the other types of vandaeous orchids that acclimate easier

  • @NicoleDeanna
    @NicoleDeanna 2 года назад

I agree with you on the standard vandas being more difficult to transition to more moisture retentive medium / getting potted in general. They do acclimate, but patience is the name of the game. I enjoy seeing your vandas.

You could try a large carabiner clip as a hook to hang the vanda from the curtain rod! I have hung some of my hanging plants this way. You just need one large enough to fit around the curtain rod.

I’m in UK, I have the same great big mature Vanda as your new one, from Ansu! I’ve had it for 1.5 years now, and love it. I have it hung in my bathroom window over a giant vase for humidity. I hang Spanish moss all over the roots to increase humidity.
It’s a prolific flowerer - as soon as one flower spike dies it starts to send up another one - I even had a double spike recently! You’ll LOVE it. Enjoy!

Thanks for another great video Danny! I tried potting a vanda seedling and it rotted😭 Just got some new, older vandas and I’m doing ok with them bare rooted. I actually use a setup I haven’t seen any where else to be honest. I keep meaning to post on Instagram or Facebook and tag you but keep forgetting. I have an indoor water garden with a hanging misting bowl above it and a plant wall to the side. It is my happy place in winter when it is cold and dry.

really great video MOG 😍, I also try them with rhynchostylis, aerides or renantheras, they are actually doing well potted. but what vanda I want to acclimate os my Vanda denisoniana which is just sitting on top of a pot with medium fingers crossed and hoping that new roots will accept the medium because I think denisoniana s really love water especially in summer time. nut everything makes sense with vandas and I think another type of vandas that could do good is the paphilionanthe or paphilionandas.

That's one big vanda! I don't if it would actually work, especially since I'm not sure if it would actually retain any water, but I wonder if scattering some filter floss in the bag might help keep the moisture for longer but still be very airy. Either way that is a very innovative way to "pot" a vanda. Definitely much smarter than what I was thinking 😆.

I've found that if you live in a cooler climate like the UK, growing vandas In pots is usually unsuccessful as the roots cannot dry quickly enough and get suffocated.

My goodness, she's amazing! I'm excited to see how this plastic bag will work! I do remember Brad doing this method in his greenhouse. I Han five different Vandas now and repotted them in LECA self watering. Its been about 8 to 10 months now and they appear to have adapted well! 😍🐦🎄

Have you ever had very young orchids? Not small types, but young ones, because I recently bought some online which are really cute and tiny and must be not more than one year old... Btw do you think young orchids need more care? When should they be repotted? Anyways hope ur doing well!! :D

So, I have a vanda seedling that was started on a foam plug, and I potted it in a mix of medium bark and sphagnum last month when I received it as a bonus in a large online order. Almost all the roots have stayed ok, and it has a new root growing now. Does this mean if I just keep it potted forever as it grows, I probably won't have issues with growing it in a pot with media, providing that I use an open mix with good aeration? I live in a hot/dry climate, so bare root would be almost impossible to maintain. That is the reason I never kept vandas before, and I've been concerned about how it will do long-term.

Hi, i have ordered a Vanda online. I was planing to try to pot her, to see if I can keep her alive that way... Unfortunately, the wonderful plant that arrived is the same size as your giant Vanda. How is your vanda doing in the bag? Did it work? I hurt her roots when dunking( i do not have such a big bucket) so i was hoping to find another way.

Hi Dani, great video! I am looking forward to get a Rhynchostylis and was wandering if it would work to have it in a pot. You just answered it now 😃
About your beautiful huge new Vanda, a thing growers in Brazil do to keep their vandas hydrated during the very strong summers there is to cover the roots with a thing cloth. It is very airy and keeps the humidity longer. There are some videos (in Portuguese) showing how they do that. Thar can be another way of solving the issue 😉
    Thanks again for the video!
