  • This week Plant Lovers, part one of an epic two part Sarcochilus story! I was told I HAD to meet 'Dan the Vet' by a mutual friend at Fitzroy Nursery as he is a passionate Sarcochilus grower! So I bided my time, waited until spring and did some good ole fashioned Instagram stalking and here we are! Dan very kindly allowed me to visit his wonderful shade house just as his Sarcochilus collection was in full bloom! What a delight!! I've never seen so many of this type of orchid in bloom in one space before! Truly a wonderful sight! So in this video Dan will share his tips and tips for growing this quite tough Australian native orchid. And in part two - next week - we'll take a look at my collection in light of having visited Dan's! What did I take away from this visit....? You'll have to watch and find out!
We mention a few things in this video. Firstly, you can find Fitzroy Nursery here: fitzroynursery.com.au/
Dan's instagram account is: / danthevet
Dylan, who introduced us, is here: / caccnsucc
You can find Barrita orchids here: barritaorchids.com/
The orchid bark Dan uses is Orchiata - google for the nearest supplier.
The slow release fertiliser Dan uses is: www.growwithosmocote.com/
And you can find the Australian Native Orchid Society here: anos.org.au/
The Sarcochilus orchids we look at particularly in this video are:
Sarcochilus Kulnura Sanctuary x Sarcochilus Kulnura Kaleidescope
    Sarcochilus Sarah Kate
    Sarcochilus hartmannii
Sarcochilus Rebecca x topaz x Kulnura x Kaleidescope
    Sarcochilus falcatus

Thank you for this colaboration. I learnt so much. Just needed this one. Following your advice I joined the Burwood orchid society and went to a show. I bought a sarcochilis unnamed and not in bloom , the grower had no idea what it would be. It turned out pink with white speckles. However it has the most amazing fragrance, .it fills my dining room and hall way when you enter the house. I was going to buy more as I thought that they all smelled like this. Well the flower is worth it and the fragrance will be a bonus if the next one has it too. Have a great week.

I don’t have any sarchos so I am interested to give them a try. Also, I had a mouse in the house and the little jerk chewed off a bloom spike on one of my oncidiums!! I nearly lost my mind! Had to give a talking to to my 3 dogs and 2 cats!!😂😂

Thank you for this wonderful vid, such a beautiful Sarcochilus collection both you and Dan have.
I took my first step into Sarcochilus world last year when I bought two plants from a local Nursery here in Geelong. After joining. the local Orchid club, I found untold wealth of information on watering them. They had been looking rather " sad " due to my lack of watering, now having increased the watering, one is doing much better and I cross my fingers for the other. I did, however come home with two more from a recent 1.our local Orchid show and 2. after our Orchid meet with guest speaker whom had some Orchids for sale and I couldn't resist.
The recent arrivals are in bloom, one is Hartmannii " Good one " and the other a delicate pink with white spots is Piccaninny 'ky' x Kulnura Dazzel ' Poka Dots ' hopefully, I can keep them alive and one day have a nice collection like you and Dan.

I bought my sarc. hartmannii from the ANOS show this year and its blooming was just beautiful. Very gentle and solft white floral scent. Currently growing it inside with a grow light next to a fan.
I also live in Melbourne and have problems with mice/rats eating my outside plants. I found 8% eucalyptus oil spray is a very useful deterrent.
