- Today we talk about how growing Vanda orchids is not only possible, but even very successful!
🦋 More info below! 🦋
Since most Vanda orchids are bare rooted, they will definitely need a period of adjusting to potted culture. I like to do temporary setups that acclimate Vandas without stressing them when repotting • The importance of temp...
Other than that, any setup that has synergy with you and your conditions should work just fine, as long as it respects the 3 principles of orchid nature: water, air and safe medium for roots!

Btw.. forgot the burdens out for the night and they pooped everywhere! 😂 Ofcourse I noticed after filming 🤷🏻♀️
We have a Macaw...you haven't seen poop, lol!!! ;)
Very interesting Danny, I have potted my vanda 2 months ago in equal volumes of large bark, desalinated coco husk and large lava rock and it is doing well. I am about to do the same for my vandopsis parishii. I am using clear slotted plastic pots. Thanks for sharing.
Thrilled about this. I just got my very first vanda a few weeks ago as a surprise seedling in a larger order. I'm so happy it came as a seedling potted already now.
Oh! There is only one comment never been this early! So thank you Danny you have been an inspiration to me and my love for orchids! I used to be scared of orchids and now my collection has grown to around 50 in just a year. So thank you for letting me be adventurous and try all kinds of orchids!😊
I’m currently growing two Vanda seedlings I got from a garden center. I took them home and repotted them in a orchid mix I use and they’re currently thriving in the mix. They have doubled in roots in the last month. I just purchased the repotme orchid food MSU. I haven’t tried this product on any of my orchids yet and I’m super excited to see how it does. Btw I live in The USA and my state is super hot and humid. I have my orchids next to the window and they seem to be really loving it. Thank you for the videos. I am kinda new to orchids and all of the videos and suggestions you have given have worked 100% for my plants.
thank you for making this video; i never would have tried this without such a good tutorial
Thanks Danny. I would like to try Vanda in a pot. Thanks for all your knowledge and experience sharing with us. I'm confident my Vanda will be doing well
Thanks. My 2 vandas are potted because of you. ❤❤
Hey Danny, great video. I myself have been potting my vandas as well. However I place them in large hanging baskets with potting medium. I enjoyed 👍🏽
Thanks for this video. I'm going to retry vandas in inorganic, see if it works. I had poor results in open root conditions.
I live in Maine, USA, and my home is only around 50°F at night. After an EXTREMELY GRADUAL transition period, I have had very good success with water culture for almost 2 years now, with flowers and fat healthy roots. I keep them in a southern window in clear glass containers with the bottom 1/3 of the roots submerged. I know that WC isn't for everyone, but it really works for me. :)
@Teresa Brockett...you keep them in water "all the time?" I'm in Arizona and I've been growing the same way but my bottom roots turn black and mushy so I have to do dry days and spray the roots with a water bottle too often🤔 What's your secret if I may ask? Good thing I'm home a lot or I couldn't keep up with the water bottle spraying. Tia
@@sharonholmes4444 I'm so sorry, I just saw this! I had to go very slowly, alternating wet "feet" days with dry days over a few months, adding longer wet times as I went. I lost some roots of course, and I found that the new growth was thick and short, instead of the usual long, slender roots, but those new roots live quite happily with their "toes" dipped in the water. I change it every couple of weeks and add fertilizer as needed. At the moment, several are spiking, so it's working. Best of luck. :)
@@teresabrockett7525💚 My Vanda's are now also showing beautiful short fat green roots. I've been spraying them daily with a mixture of Cal-mag and Seaweed extract in their vases. And every 5 days I submerge them up to the baskets with a full dose of Cal-mag, Better grow orchid plus, and Seaweed extract. Loving the results... thank you!
@@sharonholmes4444 That is wonderful! I'm so happy it's working for you. Happy orchiding! ;)
Zone 6 grower here, USA. Mine are all potted and have been...just about my entire 5 yrs of growing. I have a few in large baskets with lava rock and shredded coconut husk around their roots. They LOVE it. Great root growth and thriving with blooms! Mind you...my " media" is VERYYYYY large. Large bits of lava rocks and loose and airy shredded basket liner ( cocohusk) is perfect for those of us who hate daily watering. In summer when they go outside, they STILL love it! The media doesn't stay soggy/ wet.
How do you plant all roots inside the pots or leave some outside?
My vanda leaves start wrinkling..is it no enough water?
@@claritojavier2478 it may not be hydrated enough. I actually made a little video on my own channel about potting vandas too. But l.dont use bark. I need mine to dry out a bit faster. How are you growing yours and what is your climate like?
I am staying in Malaysia. Certain flower nurseries here are planting Vanda in plastic pots with Charcoals.
This is the way I grow them, in pots with bark and sphagnum moss (mostly with sphagnum moss) and in slotted rePotme pots. I live in US zone 9A, it’s very hot and humid here and it’s easier to soak them once a week than water them daily. I’ve never had issues with root rot and they grow well.
I have one vanda growing in a pot but without soil. I placed the vanda in the pot pre pandemic thinking I will get to it once I find a basket. But I forgot about it and it has been doing so well in a corner and has started to flower. Now It has grown so big and the roots are a tangled mess inside a very large pot. Maybe in a few years I will move it once more roots come out from the upper portion.
Have you ever been into amaryllis? I saw a beautiful deep red one at the flower shop and thought of you!
Thank you Danni. This was a great video. 🤗🥀
Brilliant video. Love your work
Beautiful...thanks for information
Great video ! Great inspiration ! Thank you ! 👏
Thanks for the video ,I bought 35 vandas 2 years ago and they look like they just came out of an invitro jar I am going to try your method if they die so be it 2 years and they look exactly like the day I bought them I have then with plenty of natural light plenty of fertilizer plenty of water and I live in the rain forest in central America so why they don't grow is a mystery coming to an end I am done with these vandas......
Thank you for the information. I would love to try out.
Although I have 2 questions:
Do you think potting Vandas in LECA is a good option?
Also, is it Vanda Bangkok sunset or Wuttipanara that's displayed at 5 mins 50 secs of your video. It's gorgeous!
Thank you once again. 🙂🙏
Hi I had been following all your tutorials and I loved it
I need to know how to treat my vandals roots that are all dark blackish color I sprayed them with hydrogen peroxide water but how long do I leave this solution in the roots
Do I rinse it off after certain time or leaved in the roots
How often do you water vandas in pots and how much water each time?
Thank you so much for the video
Thanks for the Video MOG, I have a few Vandas and I'm using thrive, can you suggest a good fertilizer for Vanda's please
Hi, about 18 months ago you did a video on fertilizing orchids and you used a small mesh bag and a slow release fertilizer. It was something new for you and I am wondering what your thoughts are today about that method. thanks
Great video. What size is the blue and white repotme pot at the end please? Thanks
Do you have any teret vandas and if so do you also put them in pots?
I am so nervous about this experiment. I just saw the video about your Mimi Palmers...
I once heard an easy way to water orchids is to place a few ice cubes around the roots each day, to ensure a consist watering without rotting since the ice curves should slowly melt. Would the ice be too cold or shock them? Is this a viable method to water?
Hi, well that's a bunch of nonesense from a company who wants to sell a lot of orchids 🤣 yes ice is very damaging long term for roots, I'd avoid it at all costs :)
Thank you
What ferlizer you use , like some shows they give epsome salt, DAP, NPK, etc but how they manage to give so much fertilizer m really confuse. May i know your fertilizing routine 🙏plz.
Thanks for this tutorial. Actually it's tiresome to water the bare rooted vandas everyday. Though I'm only a beginner and don't have many orchids I find it a hard job. Are clay pot without side slit okay ? I'm from northeast India with very warm and humid during summer.
Hi Dani, is it fine if I paint the terracotta pots. By painting will I lose the moisture wicking properties and lose out on the benefits.
Hi Danni. I need some help with a phal that was knocked on the floor by my cat. It was very healthy, good roots. The fall broke some of the roots and a baby spike, but especially it lost the top leaf, so I don't thank it will be able to grow from now on. My only hope is a keiki. Is there any way I can encourage it to grow a keiki?
I just noth 10 vafas seedlings 3 weeks ago . They say leaves cant be wet . Can you tell me what is the better way fir me to do
What kind of fertilizer you used for vanda orchids please?
Danny, where do you get your osmocote? I know you said, but I can’t find the video. There’s too many options for osmocote, and I want to be sure I’m getting the right one for my phals
Hi, I got it from orchids deluxe, they have it sold in smaller bags 😊
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you! ❤️
Keeping bare root Vandas in my neck of the woods .... yeah, right !.... it's February, technically the middle of the winter, the temperature is 85°F and bone dry, wait when the spring shows with 100 - 110 °F temps and even more bone dry. Now Danny, please tell us what can we use instead of moss cuz that thing is nowhere to be seen here !
Hi, coco peat is a very similar substitute, it's just a bit more delicate to work with, since it's fine and can clog up the air pockets. Worth trying though ☺️
What kind of fertilizer you used to for that vanda
I don't see the fertilizer at Orchids Deluxe. Any other place I could find it?
What is the name of the fertilizer?
I didn't see a link to the clay pots with the deep saucers. could you please post a link. thanks
Hi, search for them on your local ikea website, if you have it in your region 😊
@@MissOrchidGirl Thank you
The hydrotons in the pots are getting white spots. What could be reason. I have a water softener. Could it be the water?
Mineral deposits from you water.
@@orchidgarden3124 thank you so much. That was a quick response. You have a safe day now
Can I order vanda from your garden?
Madam but how to water vanda in pots
Just say root bound it will make it so much easier :]
