  • Today we talk about how growing Vanda orchids is not only possible, but even very successful!
    🦋 More info below! 🦋
    Since most Vanda orchids are bare rooted, they will definitely need a period of adjusting to potted culture. I like to do temporary setups that acclimate Vandas without stressing them when repotting • The importance of temp...
    Other than that, any setup that has synergy with you and your conditions should work just fine, as long as it respects the 3 principles of orchid nature: water, air and safe medium for roots!

    Very interesting Danny, I have potted my vanda 2 months ago in equal volumes of large bark, desalinated coco husk and large lava rock and it is doing well. I am about to do the same for my vandopsis parishii. I am using clear slotted plastic pots. Thanks for sharing.

    Thrilled about this. I just got my very first vanda a few weeks ago as a surprise seedling in a larger order. I'm so happy it came as a seedling potted already now.

    Oh! There is only one comment never been this early! So thank you Danny you have been an inspiration to me and my love for orchids! I used to be scared of orchids and now my collection has grown to around 50 in just a year. So thank you for letting me be adventurous and try all kinds of orchids!😊

    I’m currently growing two Vanda seedlings I got from a garden center. I took them home and repotted them in a orchid mix I use and they’re currently thriving in the mix. They have doubled in roots in the last month. I just purchased the repotme orchid food MSU. I haven’t tried this product on any of my orchids yet and I’m super excited to see how it does. Btw I live in The USA and my state is super hot and humid. I have my orchids next to the window and they seem to be really loving it. Thank you for the videos. I am kinda new to orchids and all of the videos and suggestions you have given have worked 100% for my plants.

    I live in Maine, USA, and my home is only around 50°F at night. After an EXTREMELY GRADUAL transition period, I have had very good success with water culture for almost 2 years now, with flowers and fat healthy roots. I keep them in a southern window in clear glass containers with the bottom 1/3 of the roots submerged. I know that WC isn't for everyone, but it really works for me. :)

    • @sharonholmes4444
      @sharonholmes4444 3 года назад

      @Teresa Brockett...you keep them in water "all the time?" I'm in Arizona and I've been growing the same way but my bottom roots turn black and mushy so I have to do dry days and spray the roots with a water bottle too often🤔 What's your secret if I may ask? Good thing I'm home a lot or I couldn't keep up with the water bottle spraying. Tia

      @@sharonholmes4444 I'm so sorry, I just saw this! I had to go very slowly, alternating wet "feet" days with dry days over a few months, adding longer wet times as I went. I lost some roots of course, and I found that the new growth was thick and short, instead of the usual long, slender roots, but those new roots live quite happily with their "toes" dipped in the water. I change it every couple of weeks and add fertilizer as needed. At the moment, several are spiking, so it's working. Best of luck. :)

      @@teresabrockett7525💚 My Vanda's are now also showing beautiful short fat green roots. I've been spraying them daily with a mixture of Cal-mag and Seaweed extract in their vases. And every 5 days I submerge them up to the baskets with a full dose of Cal-mag, Better grow orchid plus, and Seaweed extract. Loving the results... thank you!

    Zone 6 grower here, USA. Mine are all potted and have been...just about my entire 5 yrs of growing. I have a few in large baskets with lava rock and shredded coconut husk around their roots. They LOVE it. Great root growth and thriving with blooms! Mind you...my " media" is VERYYYYY large. Large bits of lava rocks and loose and airy shredded basket liner ( cocohusk) is perfect for those of us who hate daily watering. In summer when they go outside, they STILL love it! The media doesn't stay soggy/ wet.

    This is the way I grow them, in pots with bark and sphagnum moss (mostly with sphagnum moss) and in slotted rePotme pots. I live in US zone 9A, it’s very hot and humid here and it’s easier to soak them once a week than water them daily. I’ve never had issues with root rot and they grow well.

    I have one vanda growing in a pot but without soil. I placed the vanda in the pot pre pandemic thinking I will get to it once I find a basket. But I forgot about it and it has been doing so well in a corner and has started to flower. Now It has grown so big and the roots are a tangled mess inside a very large pot. Maybe in a few years I will move it once more roots come out from the upper portion.

    I once heard an easy way to water orchids is to place a few ice cubes around the roots each day, to ensure a consist watering without rotting since the ice curves should slowly melt. Would the ice be too cold or shock them? Is this a viable method to water?
