Just came across your videos. I prefer cattleyas and catasetums. I looked at Palmers website. All my orchids are in Leca. holes drilled one third of the way up from bottom of pot. I fill it to those holes and leave it until the leca is dry. They all love it and it works well for me because I travel alot. I have mostly cattleyas. I water once every 3 to 4 weeks. I also live in Florida. The Southern most point. I use Kelpak and Super Thrive Orchid Pro which use to be Dyna pro. I don't water weakly. I have few Dens that love it also. All my orchids are blooming right now. I am going to try palmers later when I finish the fertilizers I have.
That was a very informative video Dave thank you. I use MSU fertilizer the past two years along with Cal-Mag, and a seaweed extract. I don't have a R/O unit. Instead, I buy gallons of distilled water at the grocery. I don't do weakly weekly anymore. However, I fertilize every other watering. I think I do see a difference as years ago I never fertilized, but now I do see better growth since using fertilizers.
Thank you for sharing your experience! It's great to hear that you're seeing positive results with your fertilization method. Your feedback means a lot to me!
The big stores sell a good fertilizer (Orchid Pro) that is recommended by AOS, it’s made by Better Gro. I think Better Gro is owned by Palmers. I believe that orchid roots are burnt by residual fertilizer salts, that’s why the orchids need flushing. You have a nice fertilizing set up.
Keep posting your videos. I enjoyed and learned some tips too . Ive been collecting them for 16 years and i can learn a few things from you. Love your new way of hanging your vandas
That was a wonderful presentation! I had to watch it twice. So happy to see you after Helene. I'm in NC. Our mountain community really got destroyed. I'm in the Piedmont. We got a little flooding and a few trees down. Anyway...the Orchids look great. I learned how to feed my Orchids from Mr. Rick L.,too! Your R/I system is CRAZY! It reminds me of my Dad's pumphouse on our farm. I'm like Wow! Are you an Engineer by any chance? 🤔
Great video. I have very high ph here. So I change the started changing the ph and really helped my orchids and bonsai. Now it is between 6.0 and 6.5. Also added a filter to remove the chlorine and lower the TDS which is 390 out here. And I remember hearing about the "weakly weekly". Never got it.
Love the flush idea as the rain does it here. Coconuts fall from the trees and I husk sometimes to create the husk poles for the phals. they thrive on this stuff.
Your vanda “wall” looks great! In Australia we don’t have the fertilisers you mentioned, but I agree with that watering with the can I can’t get the watering accurate. I now tend to soak the pots in a tub for a while. My orchids have really thrived doing this. Having said that, I live in a very hot climate and they dry quickly.
Great video and great fun opening! I’ve been growing orchids 30+ yrs and shifted to the Growth Technology GT orchid fertilizers 2 yrs ago (bec so many RUclips plant folks raved about GT; made in Australia and available online in the US thru The Plant Haul) - my plant blooms & plant growth have doubled since starting that, with added CaliMag & Kelp. Very happy. I may experiment with/ Palmers too.
I really appreciate your thoughtful comment! It’s wonderful to hear how much success you’ve had with GT fertilizers. Wishing you continued growth and beautiful blooms!
I setup my orchids in an orchid pot with an outer pot. The outer pot has no drainage, so it is easy for me to soak them when I water&fertilize them. Just leave them in liquid for 10 to 15 mins, then pull the inner pot out and drain. It is a life saver.
Hey Dave, I personally think Mega Thrive is snake oil. Tried it and it made no difference in my plants! Jack's 2 part system made a total visual difference in my orchids in less than a week! That I can gurantee you will visually see a difference in your orchids! I have been contemplating silica. Me and Rick discussed this to some degree. Im lucky, we talk for hours about nutrients on the phone and I eat up and love every minute! Hes my orchid brother! I feed the Jack's 2 part soaks every week in summer and bi weekly in winter. I use dolomite lime in my pots as well. Together its a win win. I also use sea kelp. I enjoyed your video!
I feed mine like Rick L does soaking for a few. I then do a pour through a couple of times. I also use Silica,Cal mag and a very good seaweed. This week goes to the fall winter regime 200 ppm for the orchids or less.
A list what your using would be nice. I been following Rick L Orchids for many years also. I Love Super Thrive! It has pot ash in it, I learned that from another channel, but I've been using it for years. Also been using Alaskan Fish fertilizer on Hoyas, Orchids thats when I realized its got good stuff, my plants Love it.
Hi Dave😅🙌HAAA! The intro! Yes, you are in tune with orchid fertilizer. The Vandas will be fine hanging on the pool cage. It's made to withstand storms. I did a new video of an orchid Collection in Japan. Her yard is tiny and filled to the brim with orchids, some heat stressed, some cold damaged, and some changes to how she grows. Fertilizer is still not properly known amongst the older generation, yet they have a lot of knowledge from vegetable cultivation, or basic know-how on elements of fertilizer. I think you'll like watching.
So you are in Florida. And you have this massive outdoor space. What about orchid enthusiasts growing their plants in , townhouses, apartments or even a zone 6 -7? Thanks Dave. Fertilizer changed my plants this summer for the better as well.
That's a tough one. I just don't have any experience with that. Some people turn a room into a greenhouse with humidifiers and everything. Theres lots of videos on youtue.
If you keep your orchids with other plants the humidity from their soil will keep the area humid. My home is very dry and and I'm in zone 5. My phals are fine. There was a point where I kept them in a 20 gal tank when I lived in an apartment and the heat was blasting without my control. Though when I moved...it's just easier to keep conditions normal and stable instead of chasing them especially if you live in an apartment.
I'm in the tropics. It rains like cats and dogs!. I use osmocote, superthrive, some fish fetilizers and orchid feed. There is seaweed on the reef. I may go on the reef to get some if needed. But so far so good. Dave, I am scared too healthy may become a problem?
If they get "too healthy," they will stop flowering. Just grow a lot of roots and happy green leaves. I have never had that problem though. Thanks for sharing your gardening journey! It's always inspiring to hear how others are navigating the challenges of tropical growing. Keep up the great work!
Whoa, so much to say about this one! for one thing, looks like you don't like weakly weekly, but you are instead working with Even weaker daily, which is just the same concept on steroids! Clearly, one same fertilizer can be used at different dosages for different periodicities. So, "As It Says In the Label" is not law. The product makers will mostly give you a schedule that doesn't sound like a heck of a lot of work, so they give you the monthly or 1/2 month schedule. But you can and should do more frequent/less strong as much as is possible. Your "super secret" automation system is proof. So, please, there's nothing wrong with Weakly weekly! It is better than Strongly monthly, and not as awesome as Even weaker daily!
@@DavesOrchidOasis When I had only three orchid plants in an apartment in the big city I tried an interesting experiment: I watered my orchid pots by dipping them into my 30 gallon fish tank. That is called Aquaponics, I later learned. I never used any fertilizer, other than the low concentrations found in the tank water from the fish waste products. The biological filtration system and fish health were good measure to guarantee the concentrations were low. It worked like a miracle! But now I have more than 300 plants and seedlings which means I can't get the same results from a 30 gallon tank, I would need something much bigger, maybe a full 1000 L tank with some tilapia growing in it! And soaking all the pots in the same tank is also dangerous, it could spread disease quite quickly. So, I'm back to a more normal, spray on organic/chemical (50/50) fertilization method.
I like to try to mimic nature by running rain water through a pot of potting mix and dilute that runoff with more rain water down to 100ppm and use that water to spray the roots.
oh, fine Dave! fertilising is important, but i still disagree that its the MOST important thing! anyways, i do love your vids and your plants looks fantastic, as always. too bad you're part of the Florida Faction :( i do apreciate that you lined it out as the 4th most important thing, and the shoutout to Detroit....hahahah, hope you are having a good weekend!!

IN the summer everyday. In the winter maybe once a week. But remember I am in mega hot sunny environment.
Rick L is the best. Weekly weekly all year.
But he does weakly weekly but soaks it. That's a lot different than a watering can.
Do you mix the slow release granules into the media?
yes
Do you use both slow release and liquid fertilzers?
Yes. A good dose of slow release in March and then liquid thourhgout the year .
