    Excellent video! Thank you. I have two old Vandas with crazy long roots but they are palm trees. I’m hoping to trim the roots in the spring, they now reach the floor and have already been looped and tied once. They have given me gorgeous flowers so I want to clean them up but I’m afraid those roots reaching the rocks below will lead to trouble.
    What do you suggest?
    Thanks again!

    Just don’t snip it too high or you will loose the bottom leaves due to how the grow. Leave 3-4” from last set of leaves to be safe. I think folks give many Vanda like these strap leaf types too much sun.

      @@mainlyvandas214 “a good few months” isn’t a good answer. I was looking for 2 months, 3 months etc. Also what did you feed it, how much humidity, temps, etc.

    I had a rhyncostylis retusa which i got to save. It had 2 roots but unfortunately one of the roots immediately withered away and the last one was hanging on by a limb. Leaves kept falling quickly. So at one point I decided to cut the stem. It was black, hardened and dry. Cut till there was nothing left but the stump of a crown. Decided it wasn’t worth it and threw it out. What does it mean when the stems hardened off like that?

    • @mainlyvandas214
      @mainlyvandas214  6 лет назад +1

      Rhynchostylis are very picky, especially when their roots get messed up. I grow all mine under the Vandas and they do just fine. They tend to need more nitrogen in their diet as well.

    Man, it’s been awhile since you did a new video. Question about your rootless orchid; what is the green band at the base of the foliage? It looked kind a rubber band from broccoli. Is that part of what made new roots grow?

    Hi! I sent two comments but they didn’t post-I’m not too saavy so I think because I didn’t give my name??? Anyway, love your videos and was wondering if you know why one of my bigger vandas (it gets new leaves, roots & flowers) has droopy lower leaves. Thanks. Susan Zomaya-Chicagoland

    • @mainlyvandas214
      @mainlyvandas214  3 года назад +1

      Droppy lower leaves could be a sign of fusarium. A picture in this case is worth seeing.

    Can’t you just cut the bottom part with no leaves and remount it in the basket? I think that would make the plant look better and encourage it to put out more roots. I might be wrong but am wondering if that’s possible.

    • @mainlyvandas214
      @mainlyvandas214  5 лет назад +2

      You can yes, however at the time, i was not sure where roots were going to come from as there were literally non when I placed it into the basket with the moss. I have cut it about one inch below now where the root has formed. Thanks for your input!!
