I've tried everything to get my phal to bloom. Still nothing. I've gotten 3 new leaves and many roots over past 3 years but no spikes. Once I managed to get a spike when I trimmed it right above a node that was further down the stalk but have never gotten a spike from scratch. I've put them in cooler temps after blooming, I've tried feeding and not feeding. The fun of orchids is wearing thin now after having them in cooler temps all winter, the roots that went down into the growing media are now dying. I'm about to give up.
I have such respect for those who care for plants. I especially enjoy the fact that a young man cares for orchids in a way that speaks to my heart. The only thing that could ever match the beauty of an orchid is the soul that nurtures it. You have a wonderful, calm demeanor, and I hope to see/hear more of your orchid tips here. I had fun removing my two rescues from their pots, cleaning out the old bark medium, and placing them both into one gorgeous crystal bowl for water-culture. They are sitting next to my two rescue Fiddle Leaf Figs, and the lot brings me joy. The larger orchid is in bloom, with another flower shoot forming. The other orchid has barely any roots, and is sending a flower spike into the ionosphere! I love learning about, testing, and observing nature, and there is nothing to match the hands-on experience.
gforce you sound exactly like me!! I love each orchid and houseplant I own. I feel amazing nurturing a once sick plant to health again. Especially Discount orchids. I’m now here in California for school and can’t film my orchids back home in Ontario. But my sis sends me pics of them a lot of them are recovered and blooming! I wish I could take some vids but I’m going home in a few months and I can then. Stay tuned and keep me updated on your orchids. Sounds like you did a good thing by transferring them to water culture and hope they bloom soon.
Garden Of Eden I just found your video! Thanks for the tips, I too am in Ontario 😊 I’ve found out recently my GGrandparents who were from Switzerland had a business growing orchids. I’ve loved orchids and now have 6 😊 I purchased in Aug a mini and after it bloomed reported it and found it had no living roots or aerial roots 😩 I am trying your way with placing in a glass of water. What happens after it starts growing roots though when you pot it up? I heard any change in media the roots that are not accustomed to being in what you pot them in will die!
Hello there I know you don’t know me but I’m trying to message you to man and obviously he cannot respond I have a question for you since you’re on this channel because he is not telling us how long it is taking for the new roots to grow do you happen to know when you have no roots and only one leaf left and you’re putting them in water culture how long it will take for a couple routes to talk to girl? Please help me I do not wanna lose my baby or kid she’s so beautiful her DNA is amazing she shoots Kiki is out of every note for me and I’m about to lose her
Saw this video about 1.5 months ago and came back to say that this REALLY WORKED! IM so happy! I decided to try it on an orchid that only 2 had roots. I didn't see any new growth or change at all for 2 weeks. Nevertheless I decided to leave it in a new fresh cup of water and forget about it. Another 2 weeks later and I finally actually see really 2 tiny new green little roots peaking out of the base of the orchid!!! I was so shook and happy when I saw them! Im definitely going to try this technique with another orchid that has zero roots, yet is still growing a new leaf (showing that it really doesn't want to die off yet). It definitely pays off to be patient and not give up on your orchid even if it takes several weeks just to see some new root growth! I'm so happy to finally see my orchids coming back to life again 😭✨
Finally! A tutorial on orchids that makes sense. Thank You. I moved in to a house with a dying orchid, I have never had orchids, but I can't let it die. Gonna do my best to save it.
When i saw this in February i was searching around in despair over the seeming loss of three of my Orchids; health issues had me away from home for almost a year. I used this seemingly 'too simple' method and Bingo! It worked !! Wish i could show photos of my 'chids' rejuvenations! Thank you so much.
Omg, I know this is old, but thank you! Please pray for my orchid, he has three clones and no roots! He was the champion, but due to my mistakes the roots rotted (too tighttly packed medium i think). Anyway, i hope you have a lovely day and all your orchids grow stronger ❤
I'm new to orchids and water culture. I have three in water culture that are doing great. Since then I've been rescuing some orchids from around my office that people don't know how to take care of (or think the plant is dead once the flowers fall off!). I'm really excited to know I'm doing things right and hope all the orchids I've rescued are able to live longer. I've watched a lot of RUclips videos and yours is by far one of the best I've seen. I'm really hopeful my rescue orchids will do as well as my healthy ones!
Please, anyone know: How long does it takes for new roots to sprout? Using the water culture method & tap water (24 hrs old, air out the chlorine)? I _know_ these beauties take their time growing.
@@Digitalhunny I want to know too, please sir I have 7 phals all with no roots I have no idea what really happened to them. I think I must’ve watered them too much this past year. Realized all had no really good and healthy roots only after none of them bloomed as their usual. I’m trying this method starting today. I’ve picked all 7 up today off their glasses of water they aren’t touching and sprayed and drenched them down with rainwater and placed them back atop their respective glasses twice today. Please any help as to the process and time frames thank you
Your method absolutely works. I have 8 orchids that looked like they were dying so I took them out of their medium, which was bark, and the roots were dead!! So I’ve been caring for them as you’ve suggested and I see new roots on all of them. Some still look very sad and their leaves are shriveled but I see new roots trying to sprout out, so I’m hopeful! Thank you so much for sharing!!
This is such a simple and WONDERFUL video, just what I needed! I am hopeful to see my orchids come back after losing their roots due to root rot. Thank you for all the different orchids that you include here. Great video.
You have given me hope where for several hours there was none., so now with the orchid and water culture I am hoping for your success. thanks, I am so grateful for you insights xo
Just wanted to let you know that I watched your video about 10 days ago. I have 2 mini phals that have no roots. I thought I would try what I learned from you and both of them now have a tiny little root starting. One thing I did do, I did have the bottom of the plant touching the water and I did change the water every day. I want to thank you for your help, I did not think it was possible, but, anything is possible.
Im going to try this too. My plant has no leaves so nothing is there to prop it and keep it hovering above the water. Will follow your lead and change the water every day
This method works. I have two orchids, one had no roots and a tiny keiki and the other had just an aerial root. After about a month, the rootless one's keiki has grown two slam roots and I can see another one during to emerge. The one with the aerial root has now grown five new roots. I have put a transparent plastic bag over each one, to help prevent evaporation and keep the humidity level high as possible. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
I came to this channel, because I have a small phal (not a mini) that was a kiki. I separated it from its parent. It had nice roots, 4 leaves symmetrically growing 2 on each side (about 6 inches long each), and it was growing a new leaf at the time of separation. I potted it in fresh premium orchid medium from an orchid grower in California that was suitable for phals going into a 4-inch pot. I then went on vacation for 3 weeks. When I came home 2 weeks ago, three of my smaller orchids were suffering from shriveled and drooping leaves. All growth was stalled. Two have bounced back and are rooted in fresh orchid growing medium, but they had a couple viable roots and air roots. Only this one has shown no improvement in 2 weeks. It has one air root only, which is hanging on but has a crease in it near the base of the plant. Because it had absolutely no other roots, I am in a quandary what to do for it. Misting it with water and loosely potted in bark, I ordered Mega Thrive from the orchid grower in California, and that just came a couple days ago. I have sprayed the kiki with one treatment as a foliar booster to plain filtered water. I am encouraged by your method of saving phals with no roots, and I have this kiki in a champagne flute over water as you show, with three bamboo chopsticks to support it above the waterline, as the leaves are completely floppy. It's out of direct light, in bright indirect light (eastern facing window, since I don't have south facing). I am hopeful that I can keep it alive with foliar feeding/watering, and that your method will allow it to grow new roots. Thank you for this video, and I will update whatever the outcome.
This video was like dropping in on a friend for plant advice. So nice to watch and I didn't know orchids take water through their leaves and other helpful stuff. Just seeing your setup was helpful too. Thanks so much.
Thank you so much for your video. I am 73 and is so wonderful to hear a young voice interested in growing plants. I will try your, very promising, method. Be happy and healthy, :). From Canada.
Thank you so much for posting this. I have an orchid that wasgiven to me by my mother a few years back and left for vacation only to come back with it absolutely miserable (I did try to have it taken care of but it was neglected). I have tried everything but this method. I have some hope now! Thank you for sharing!
After watching this I immediately put my ailing mini orchid in ICU, or in this case a glass suspended over water. The roots are next to nonexistent bc of one overzealous root trimming on my part but there are three strong flower stems which have been growing and I can even see buds forming, its just the leaves that are in bad shape (wrinkly and limp). I am really hoping this does the trick and she gets better! As a visual person this was very clear and helpful, thank you!
Garden Of Eden I was told in a case like this cut the flower spikes for the the health of the plant... so it can focus on roots, leaves after rehydrates... thoughts?
I'm so glad that I found this video. I have an orchid that I received as a gift and tried to repot it but roots got root rot. So I just started this method today. Plus received one as a rescue that's dehydrated with one root. So I have them both sitting in the water now. I can't wait for results. Thanks again
Thank you for this video. I switched about 3 orchids last year to water but used a lot of water not just a little. They have survived in water for almost a year. I have gotten some mushy roots but cut them off. I will switch to less water as you have shown. I converted the rest of my orchids about 6 months ago and they are doing great too. Although no blooms due to no fertilizer.
Sounds good, the blooms will come once the root system is sturdy enough. If you have many roots from the water culture, I would switch to bark and moss. The orchid will take root in that and bloom for sure.
You are amazing! I be grown 100’s of orchids over the years and didn’t know about this simple tip! I’m especially surprised about rooting the Cattleya. Thank you!
I just placed a mini over water in a small round bud-vase I had, as a sort of hail-Mary pass after I discovered it’s roots were all but gone. I wasn’t sure if it would be effective, but you’ve definitely given me hope! Beautiful job! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Thanks so much for the info and your different steps to how your rooting system works! I have 2 Cattleas that have no roots. I got them as bag babies from Home Depot and the Roots had rotted completely and I've been trying different things to get them to start. I love your method and how well your Phalaenopsis has taken off! It's beautiful! Thanks for sharing!
Sharon Greggs thanks for the compliments!! I wish our Ontario Home Depots sold bagged babies. Everyone gets them and I feel left out lol. Update: the pink orchid has a new spike and buds. Same medium 👍🏽
Thank you so much for this video!! I have a phal orchid that is 5 years old that I got when my mom died. I had never had an orchid before so I was kind of excited. During this 5 years it has only grown one new leaf and never rebloomed. I had even repotted it in an orchid pot with orchid soil and fertilized. The leaves did stay green. I recently unpotted it from the all of that to discover it only has one questionable root. I found your video so I am hoping for the best! Thanks again!
Spectacular video. Starting off with showing your blooming orchid's recovery was such a powerful way to open the video. Seeing an orchid which once had no roots looking that good is an inspiration. It gives a lot of hope an optimism to someone with an orchid that isn't doing too hot. The way you show multiple examples is helpful. Especially how you highlight that some of yours have just a few roots while others started off with none at all. I will definitely be giving your technique a try. I got my first phalaenopsis a little over a year ago. I was thrilled when I was able to get it to rebloom. It was rootbound so i repotted just recently. Unfortunately i underestimated watering needs :/ the new media i used dried out MUCH quicker than the old media and my poor lovely orchid lost a leaf and almost all of its roots. It's a blessing in disguise though. As a result of this failure i get to learn about my orchid and learn from others! So excited for the journey of nursing my plant back to health. Thank you for your clear and straightforward video. Such a source of hope!
Thank you I have roots coming on so thanks again my gardening friend I couldn’t believe I had roots as quickly two weeks they were popping down ward to the water without them touching the water 💦 Happy growing have a beautiful day!
Thank you so much for making suck a quick and easy video. I panicked when Id seen how many of my roots where dead on my first orchid. Im happy I found your short video so I could have a bit of hope.
Thank you for this. I was shocked to see new root growth after 3 days on a nearly lifeless stem I almost gave up on. I will keep you posted on its growth.
I found this video after my friend over watered my orchid and nearly killed it. I'm happy to say it's working! I thought it was a goner. Thanks for sharing this. I hope to put it back in its pot as soon as it has more healthy roots from its remaining one. It has a little baby one growing now. :)
This video is so inspirational for my sad (half-dead) orchid collection (of only 3 phals). Thank you SO much for these awesome tips...I'll get to work now on the revitalization process!
this orchid was gifted to me about one year ago and everything was fine until it was repotted in what I believe was too big a vase which trapped way too much water, so I had to trim a lot of rotten roots which left me with three good roots. I'm trying this method right now and I can't wait to check back in in some weeks!!
I just rescued 3 Phalaenopsis that were drowned in too much water for a long time. I think I'm going to try your technique after I thoroughly clean and sanitize them. They have no roots at all after I trimmed them. They were all rotten. Temporary water culture method is probably the answer plus you can see what's going on. This is my first time at this. Thank you for sharing.
Helene Chau nice you are giving them another chance! My orchid also had no roots from drowning in water, but now has bloomed with this method. Good luck!
Hi! Here are my updates. It's been a little more than a month and all 3 of my very sick orchids in ICU have a leaf in each and 1 with 2 new roots. I am very pleased with this result. Again, thank you!
I tried this with my rootless orchid and it started to grow 2 tiny roots, which just shrivelled and died before they were even 1 cm long. I spent all last year trying to save it (following 3 rescue methods to date) and it is producing leaves but no roots. All advice gatefully received!
That is strange that the new roots are dying! If you have tried water culture already i would recommend placing the orchid in moist sphagnum moss. Hope that helps :)
@@adamfromgardenofeden I know this is a million years later from your helpful comment, sorry!, but NOTHING saved that orchid - it is long gone. BUT I have very successfully tried sphagnum moss with a couple of other rescue orchids, and though I didn't see your comment until now, Yes, it was totally a successful method! Just saying that here, so others might also benefit.
I am so happy to have come across your video. My orchids got to much moisture, roots are almost gone. I have 4 suspended now, fingers crossed I get new growth.
Many people on RUclips forget to mention that if you take a plant from its original mixture ( bark and sphagnum moss) and place them in a different mixture, the roots will probably die. Eventually, new roots will develop, if proper care is given. Could you make an update of the orchids that rescued in the water culture?
Yay! This is so very encouraging! I am trying to rehab a struggling orchid I rescued with no healthy roots left but with three wilted leaves. The leaves have perked up a bit since it’s been in my care. I am so glad I found your video. Thank you!
Was looking for a video that would help me recover roots of my orchids. I love ❤️ the clarity , close up n details of how you have explained. Will do just this as one orchid of mine has just one root & another one has none. Thank you so much
Thank you so much for this precious tip! It really works! I saved two Phaleanopsis since February, when I saw this video! Keep on sharing your precious knowledge! Thank you!
Giving this video and praying I can revive my orchid I had overwatered and all the roots rotted. Giving it a chance since it’s not dead yet, and I hope I can bring it back.
A FAN WORKS WONDERS for water culture. I had the same problem with white fuzzy mold when I first tried water culture but a fan solved that problem and so far so good.
I’m so dumb and I feel terrible. I had an orchid for over 4 year but she was never repotted and she got little flys. I thought I would try to repot her and get rid of the flys but stupid me didn’t research the actual life of the plant and why it grows as it does. So I got another pot just a bit bigger, new bark potting mix like she was in. I rinsed her, cleared dead roots and repotted. Then a month later 2 of her 4 leaves went yellow and dropped. No new growth to be seen. I started reading. Really reading. What I failed to realize when I repotted her was, I stuck her aerial roots INTO the new soil! I never realized I did it. So, all but one greenish root remains. Her remaining 2 leaves still look ok. I’m grateful I found your video. I’ve cleared the dead roots and have her in my coffee press, the best glass container I have to accommodate her. Wish us luck. Ty.
I’ll try this method. I’ve been growing orchids for more than 15 years, living in Colombia. Now 3 years here in NYS and it has been so hard to grow orchids here, they do well and then they die always same reason: roots get dry and toasty and then the plant die, so frustrating for an orchid lover. Thank you for your video, I hope I can save my orchids 🌸
I have a phalaenopsis that went into shock from repotting and lost all its roots. I’m trying your method suspending the base right above the water. In less than two weeks it has three root bumps that have appeared. Fingers crossed! Thanks for the tip. It’s working.
my orchid came with a sponge around the roots and eventually the roots all rotted without me realizing and the leaves fell off. There's one tiny one left and I'm really hoping this method helps it pull through 🤞
Apologies for the late response!! Im afraid adding bark to the water might make the bark rot and eventually the future roots of the orchid. Has this worked for yours?
Air holes make total sense to me. You are the 1st person to recommend that…that I have found on RUclips😅 That helps me a lot🙃 Thanks again!! I live in northern New Mexico (the original, BTW). I’m always curious where my teachers are from.
This is very helpful. I’m trying to rescue my daughter-in-laws orchid. It was accidentally left outside and got sunburned pretty bad. There is one good root left and I wasn’t sure what to do with water culture so this was exactly what I was looking for.
So glad I found your video! I was fertilizing today and found one of my Phals had no roots. I'm going to try your method and see if I can safe it. Thanks!
Love this video I tried to maintain my orchid safe but it has been almost a mission impossible, I don't have the appropriate place to put it and accidentally it fell off and no idea how to re pot because it lost its roots. I'm going to try this method and pray for the best. Blessings for your info.
my rescue orchid is down to one leaf now. It has 2 new leaves growing but they are still tiny and take sooo long to grow compared to my healthy plants. Its been in this state for well over a month or 2 with no roots. It just doesnt want to grow roots at all. It chose to inves its energy into the leaves rather than growing a single tiny root. Its pretty dehydrated and I do everything I can to hydrate it. I keep it in sphagnum moss and keep it moist. I also wipe the leaf with a damp cloth just in case it can absorb atleast a tiny bit of water through the leaf. Atleast Im glad the plant is a strong fighter and it doesnt wanna give up at all
I was given a phal 4/18 and I was sick and could not care for it plus I did know anything about orchids. I’m learning. It only has 1-2 roots, no leaves and 4 flower spikes with leaves. I reported it in a new medium. Should I cut off and try to propagate the flower spikes? Help please.
The flower spikes will most likely not sprout new plants. If they are all spent I would cut and discard them so that the orchid can focus it’s energy on growing new roots and leaves. 🌺🌺
The 4 flower spikes are the only healthy looking pieces on the plant, they have leaves on them at the top. Do you think if I cut them they would grow roots?
Oh my goodness thank you!!! This is the info I’ve been searching for. I went to repot mine and it just broke off from the roots. My roots were doing bad anyway. I have two nice healthy leaves left suspended over water now!
Unfortunately, I have had many orchids with no roots. Water evaporates very quickly so if you have several to deal with (I have 60), letting the entire root area sit in damp moss works great and I would never use tap water for any orchid ever. I make a mixture of distilled water, kelp, and CalMag instead of just plain water. Calcium and the enzymes in kelp are very effective for root growth. I use different proportions and add orchid fertilizer for regular watering.
The one you have that has follows is the kind I have and it has some root trouble and I’m trying to save it. How do I tell the root spikes from the flowering spikes?
Lora Massegee they look similar at first but flower spikes point upward and come from between the leaf and stem. The roots come out anywhere along the stem and point anywhere they want. Roots also start becoming grey
rona tiram I have a video on an update from a while ago. Now the Cattleya passed away because it turns out it had a disease. I definitely will do a third update soon on the others! Stay tuned! 🌺🌺
I received an orchid from Grocery Store--A gift from a friend actually. --Phalaenopsis. I am so new with orchids. I took it out of the pot and the roots were covered in this spongy mossy type stuff which looked like it was ruining the roots. I took as much of that stuff off as possible. Some would not come off because the roots really stuck to it. I took some lava rocks that I got from a neighbor and a clay pot with holes on the side and bottom. I watered it first with tap water. and placed them in the sunniest window I could find but not too sunny where they would burn. I have been able to put it out side and get some nice sun and warmth (70-80F) . I have drenched/soaked it a couple of times as well in Distilled water (2-3 days apart). I have been checking the roots and they seem to be going through a dying phase because they look dry and shriveled and some browning. I trimmed away the roots that look dead. Still using the Lava rock. Wondering what I am doing wrong. The remaining roots feel hardened and stiff and greenish to pale white. Are the roots drying out too fast? Should I drench and soak more often like everyday? Should I switch to pea size gravel? I do see another flower spike climbing up along the side of leaves. Don't want to lose anymore roots (barely has any now...) Don't want to lose spike. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Much. Mark
You did the right thing by removing the old substrate. So awesome that it’s warm enough where you are to keep the orchid outside (I’m tired of the snow here 😭) I don’t have any experience growing orchids in rock substrate, but I would imagine it would stay way too dry. I would actually keep the orchid indoors for now to rejuvenate, since the outside environment can be harsh on a rootless, struggling orchid. I would recommend this water culture method in my video and if that doesn’t work, try filling a ziplock bag with moss and the orchid, blow it up with air, and close. Once it sprouts long enough roots from either method, you can pot it in a bark and moss mixture and grow it outside!
@@adamfromgardenofeden Thanks so Much. Appreciate it. Will keep trying the water method. From the time you start water method, how long does it take before you start seeing improvement or new roots developing? Thanks Much--Mark
@@markanderson3852 Every orchid is different, but it usually takes a few weeks to a month to start seeing new roots sprout. If it’s been longer than a month and a half I usually switch to a ziploc freezer bag filled with damp, moist sphagnum moss, place the orchid in and blow it with air, then seal it and keep it in a bright warm place.
Thanks!!! I bought an orchid from a gas station out of all places and as expected the root system was absolutely terrible!!!! Almost all of them are dead I'll try this and update my comment if it worked thanks!!!
@@adamfromgardenofeden it worked!!!! I never expected results this fast I'm getting new root growth and old roots are having active tips again!!! Unfortunately I I now have to give them to friends and family because I'm moving to Florida and I'm only taking 5 plants with me because we won't have enough space for all of my plants in my mom's car Anyways I'm glad this works and I'll definitely be doing for any orchids I buy in the future that have root problems 👍🏼
Carnivorous Plants & Gardening I am so happy it worked for you!! Hope the orchids you saved live long and bloom. Have an awesome and safe move to Florida, an orchid grower’s dream!! Don’t worry about the orchids and plants you’re leaving, Florida has everything and more 🌺🌺
Excellent information. Thank you. I rescued ten Phalaenopsis from a garbage pile. They were buried under wet pine cuttings. So their leaves are crinkled and moist and the roots rather dry. How can I save them? So far I have cleaned them and put them in new Orchid soil.
Anja Fink Amazing you are giving them a second chance!! The steps you took sound great so far, I would just monitor them for changes. If things worsen then definitely try water culture. 🌺🌺
What do I do if the roots aren't long enough to reach the water so the only way the root would touch is if the stem was in the water too. It has some brown dangle bits that would reach the water but the 2 green roots are too short
I bought what seemed like a healthy orchid from Lowe’s, only to find out on closer inspection it had root rot even if the roots themselves looked decent the stem was rotting and had that white fuzzy stuff which is probably mealy bugs, of course the thing was suffocating in horrible sphagnum moss so then I transferred it to bark, the entire orchid still spiralled downhill because I don’t think it was healthy to begin with, nice blooms and leaves can be deceiving in the shop...I’ve never had an orchid from Lowe’s that ever survived. I’m trying this method now and hope it works.
Usually orchids from the store are potted for convenience, despite being harmful for the plant long term. Hope you can save your orchid and it blooms again! I lost several orchids as well until I finally got one to rebloom. Patience is key but it pays off to see a sick orchid get healthy again and bloom! 🌺🌺 good luck
@@adamfromgardenofeden Thanks so much. I looked at it today and I think it's too late :-( the other methods weren't working for me and I think I found your video too late...it's so emotionally draining every time I lose one. :-(
Water culture is ideal for rejuvenating orchids with no roots, your results are great! How is your cattleya looking now did she started new growths? Did you repot it in medium?
fifi The Cattleya's roots grew longer so I potted it. It's doing well but taking a long time to bounce back. The new growth eye hasn't begun to grow as yet.
Hi Can you help me. I had a beatiful orchid with lush roots. Moved to clay pellets and all went wrong. Roots went mushy. I pulled mush off and have stringy roots. Can I save this plant in a water culture ??? Help please Email morse.kathy@outlook.com
I'm so glad I found this video !! I accidentally overwatered one of my three orchids - its leaves were wilting from rotting roots which I accidentally mistook for underwatering since the outer portions of the roots still appeared healthy - so I'm going to try this method out and see if I can save it. Its roots are pretty messed up so I'm hoping it'll grow new roots, especially since I've already cut two thirds of them out and the remaining roots are very yellow. I'm not going down without a fight LOL
@@dakotardr2173 unfortunately my orchid didn't make it, it was just too sickly and couldn't recover in the end ): the rot was much worse than I thought. but it certainly prolonged its life and I've seen this method work on my friend's orchids! it's worth trying ❤️
My orchid has pretty bad root rot. I cut off the dead roots, but the rest of the living roots appear to also have rot. Should I cut them off before trying this method, or keep them on to provide water for the plant? It seems very dehydrated, so I'm worried that cutting off the roots will kill the orchid even though they do have rot. Thanks!
Omg I’m so tickled I have some Kelli’s coming on my mini Phals an my my omcididiums goodness my Shari Baby Sweet fragrance has new shoots and I’m a happy gardener praying 🙏 they continue I do love all my plants it’s such a joy for me to start something and get it growing and blooming. Night all Happy growing!🙋♀️🤗
Garden Of Eden that’s fantastic so sorry I missed that my iPhone misspelled Kekis it is possessed lol.omg thrilled you have kekis I love finding those little babies. Have you tried a Vanda I purchased a cheap one at Lowe’s sale corner and am trying your method to get new roots a beautiful phal Too very favorite color and I’m going to try that one you did in moss it’s lovely 😊 Have a beautiful day!😁
Olivia Parker lol possessed 😂😂. Haven’t had a Vanda before. Our Lowe’s never have orchids for sale sadly. But I did go to a nursery and found some for $80!! Too pricy!!
Garden Of Eden They certainly are I found very young ones at Amazon you can get many different varieties in one order u can chose anything they offer in say 4 vandas or phals warning ⚠️ they are babies and my husband made baskets an hangers for those these plants are very healthy great instruction on each variety so take a look I just have to mist them often they are outdoors in filtered light but they are growing roots like crazy so if you want to try them they are worth it I haven’t lost one . Take care
I currently have 1 right now that needs saving. The bottom roots are all dead however there are still 2 old air roots. The white flowers are almost gone and Home depot sold it for $3.00 only.
I have purchased a very tiny vanda orchid that has been connected to a bark and its so tiny about 1.5 inches and I can not see the roots for the spag. moss...how do i care for it on the I think a coconut board?
Brayna Taylor I’m not experienced for vandas or coconut board but what I would do is soak it in water every few days. That’s usually how people water vanda orchids.
Super helpful! I have a phal that was gifted to me from a big box store with hat had been sitting in inches of water for who knows how long. I tried to save a much as I could but all the roots have since died off, so now for poor thing is bare. I’m m hopeful I can save it with this method. Thank you!
Place ABOVE the water. Wow. I have searched and tried so many things, frustrated. I have one orchid I’m going to put on this method today. It has maybe 2 very short roots and wrinkled leaves, but 1 new leaf, so maybe not that sick, but needs to perk up. Do you fertilize them in this condition? Thank you. 😘🙏🏼❤️
Christina LW28 No I fertilize once they’re at full health and potted up. It’s best to just allow it to start remaking roots. Hope this method helps u and keep me updated!! 🌺🌺
idylle♡doll I have replaced water several times. There are also little wiry roots forming and the growing roots are small, maybe an inch, but dark green and firm. Patience! 🙏🏼💚
More videos coming soon! What vids would you guys like to see?
I've tried everything to get my phal to bloom. Still nothing. I've gotten 3 new leaves and many roots over past 3 years but no spikes. Once I managed to get a spike when I trimmed it right above a node that was further down the stalk but have never gotten a spike from scratch. I've put them in cooler temps after blooming, I've tried feeding and not feeding. The fun of orchids is wearing thin now after having them in cooler temps all winter, the roots that went down into the growing media are now dying. I'm about to give up.
I enjoyed your video
potting mix.... how to make
@@kittenkorleone2918😅😊😅⁰
I have one one of the leafs fell off :( and I am not good with on how do this just would like to know if the leaf can be saved and how would I ? 🤔
I loved your video here. You are not wasting time telling stories, straight to the point is what I appreciate the most. Thank you really.
Paula Figueroa awesome, thx!! Wishing you many orchid blooms
Paula: I second that! Very helpful information presented without endless talk. What a relief.
Finally! A tutorial on orchids that makes sense. Thank You. I moved in to a house with a dying orchid, I have never had orchids, but I can't let it die. Gonna do my best to save it.
Glad you are trying instead of giving up. Best of luck!
When i saw this in February i was searching around in despair over the seeming loss of three of my Orchids; health issues had me away from home for almost a year. I used this seemingly 'too simple' method and Bingo! It worked !! Wish i could show photos of my 'chids' rejuvenations! Thank you so much.
FITZIEBLUE well I am so glad that your chids have recovered!!! I'm hoping they soon put out some beautiful spikes! Thanks for your awesome comment!
Looks like you are off to a great start!! Keep it up and lucky you have a supply of office orchids!
@@adamfromgardenofeden Thank you so much :)
You have super simplified a major issue faced by newbies.. Thank you!
Dr. Jp Glad it helped! Wishing you many orchid blooms!
Please, anyone know: How long does it takes for new roots to sprout?
Using the water culture method & tap water (24 hrs old, air out the chlorine)?
I _know_ these beauties take their time growing.
How long should the new roots be before you pot it in medium?
I have a extremely rare orchid and has no roots. So will try this method. Only other place I’ve seen mine is in KEW gardens London.
Please any help as to the process and time frames thank you
This is terrific. I've given up on orchids before, due to simple ignorance. Thanks for sharing.
Try try again. Thanks for ur comment!
You’re off to a great start! I’m sure they’ll bounce back amazingly! Keep me updated 🌺🌺
how long did it take?
This is such a simple and WONDERFUL video, just what I needed! I am hopeful to see my orchids come back after losing their roots due to root rot. Thank you for all the different orchids that you include here. Great video.
How are your orchids coming along? Success?
You have given me hope where for several hours there was none., so now with the orchid and water culture I am hoping for your success. thanks, I am so grateful for you insights xo
Natasha Lindner I'm so glad you found it helpful! Wishing you success and many blooms!
I am gonna try this method sounds great will let you know when I get the blooms.
I love this simple video, without so much babble on about really unrelated stuff. Cool.
Alicia Danowski just read this now and so glad it is working for you! Best of luck
Nonmi Hiseddeo sounds like you did the right thing. The water culture will help. Best of luck and keep me updated!
This video was like dropping in on a friend for plant advice. So nice to watch and I didn't know orchids take water through their leaves and other helpful stuff. Just seeing your setup was helpful too. Thanks so much.
Haha that makes me so glad to hear. Glad it helped and thanks so much for your comment! ☺️🌺🌺
Lola Cookie sounds like you did the right thing, those leaves need to plump up again and new roots are definitely needed
Leslie Flowers awesome I’m so glad! Keep me updated!! 🌺🌺
Using this technique I was able to get a new button baby to start rooting after the mother plant died. Thank you !!
American Hot Topics no problem glad it helped
You are amazing! I be grown 100’s of orchids over the years and didn’t know about this simple tip! I’m especially surprised about rooting the Cattleya. Thank you!
I just placed a mini over water in a small round bud-vase I had, as a sort of hail-Mary pass after I discovered it’s roots were all but gone. I wasn’t sure if it would be effective, but you’ve definitely given me hope! Beautiful job! Thanks so much for sharing this.
Glad you found it helpful :)

Thanks for your comment. You're giving me hope my orchid will survive after all the roots have rotted & burned. Hope yours turned around full of life.
I found this video after my friend over watered my orchid and nearly killed it. I'm happy to say it's working! I thought it was a goner. Thanks for sharing this. I hope to put it back in its pot as soon as it has more healthy roots from its remaining one. It has a little baby one growing now. :)

@@adamfromgardenofeden Thank you!
Nice to see your picture. Thanks for doing the Orchid videos. I’ve learned a lot from you.
this orchid was gifted to me about one year ago and everything was fine until it was repotted in what I believe was too big a vase which trapped way too much water, so I had to trim a lot of rotten roots which left me with three good roots.
Good luck!
I'll give you an update on them in the future. Thanks for your nice comment!
Looking forward to it. and thank you so much for watching!
Andrea Walker Yay! Good luck, you definitely should see new roots in the coming weeks! 🌺🌸
Many people on RUclips forget to mention that if you take a plant from its original mixture ( bark and sphagnum moss) and place them in a different mixture, the roots will probably die. Eventually, new roots will develop, if proper care is given. Could you make an update of the orchids that rescued in the water culture?
Monica M. Very true!! I have made 2 update videos just check my other vids. Happy growing 🌺🌺
Good work, so encouraging. I am doing water culture on 2 orchids which I nearly killed! One has hardly any roots, so I am hopeful.

Great job growing new roots! Happy growing
Denise's Orchid Paradise Thanks! It's rewarding to save orchids!
Thank you for this. I bought some phals that had so much sodden moss and the roots had rotted. I've used this treatment to see how they do.
There's one tiny one left and I'm really hoping this method helps it pull through 🤞
I hate when they ship orchids with sponge!! A similar thing happened to me. Good luck 🌺🌺
@@adamfromgardenofeden All my Phals came with a sponge☹️
I’m inspired. Mine doesn’t have enough leaves so I immersed some bark mulch in the water and am propping it on top. Hope it works.

Mary Perdomo glad you r trying. If you have no space maybe consider a hanging basket?
wow, you have green hands. I am going to do air holes as well. Well done!
my rescue orchid is down to one leaf now.
It's Tabaitha sounds like a good setup! Keep me updated.
Thank you, will definitely try this instead of the other two failing techniques. Hope to update very soon with great success!
Angie Marie good luck! And keep me updated!!
If there is a flower spike you leave it or you will cut it off to promote roots? Thks for sharing...
bobbymalta73 I would cut it to allow energy for roots for sure 🌺🌺

The one you have that has follows is the kind I have and it has some root trouble and I’m trying to save it.
How do I tell the root spikes from the flowering spikes?
Lora Massegee they look similar at first but flower spikes point upward and come from between the leaf and stem. The roots come out anywhere along the stem and point anywhere they want. Roots also start becoming grey

@@adamfromgardenofeden Thanks Much
@@adamfromgardenofeden Thanks so Much.
@@adamfromgardenofeden Thanks Much.
Thanks!!! I bought an orchid from a gas station out of all places and as expected the root system was absolutely terrible!!!! Almost all of them are dead I'll try this and update my comment if it worked thanks!!!
Carnivorous Plants & Gardening Can’t wait!!! Please update :) 🌺🌺 Best of luck
@@adamfromgardenofeden it worked!!!! I never expected results this fast I'm getting new root growth and old roots are having active tips again!!! Unfortunately I I now have to give them to friends and family because I'm moving to Florida and I'm only taking 5 plants with me because we won't have enough space for all of my plants in my mom's car
Anyways I'm glad this works and I'll definitely be doing for any orchids I buy in the future that have root problems 👍🏼
Carnivorous Plants & Gardening I am so happy it worked for you!! Hope the orchids you saved live long and bloom. Have an awesome and safe move to Florida, an orchid grower’s dream!! Don’t worry about the orchids and plants you’re leaving, Florida has everything and more 🌺🌺
@@adamfromgardenofeden thank you!
I would just let the plant hover above the water rather then put the stem at risk of rot. The new roots that sprout should grow and reach the water!
idylle♡doll Sad to hear but don’t give up! Maybe next time inspect the orchid and start with a healthier one 🌺🌺
Love your video! Short but to the point! Very helpful! Thanks!
Diep Cao no problem. Best of luck with your orchids
I'll try it out thank you for your advice because my orchids are dying. Thank u for sharing the information.🌿🌾🌿
Carmen Cruz no prob! Thanks 🌺🌺
Hi
Can you help me. I had a beatiful orchid with lush roots. Moved to clay pellets and all went wrong. Roots went mushy. I pulled mush off and have stringy roots. Can I save this plant in a water culture ??? Help please

Hey, did it work?
@@dakotardr2173 unfortunately my orchid didn't make it, it was just too sickly and couldn't recover in the end ): the rot was much worse than I thought. but it certainly prolonged its life and I've seen this method work on my friend's orchids! it's worth trying ❤️
@@krexxa i tried this method too and my orchid died :(
Can't wait for my Orchid to start growing New roots! Thanks for the information and Happy NewYear!!
Fingers crossed it grows amazing! Happy new year ☺️🌺🌺
Can’t wait to see roots on mine
Maria Castro yyes it’s exciting! 🌺🌺
Thanks!
Chris Pittsley sry for the late reply, I would keep them temporarily to provide water and if they really get mushy then chop em off
Omg I’m so tickled I have some Kelli’s coming on my mini Phals an my my omcididiums goodness my Shari Baby Sweet fragrance has new shoots and I’m a happy gardener praying 🙏
they continue I do love all my plants it’s such a joy for me to start something and get it growing and blooming. Night all Happy growing!🙋♀️🤗
Olivia Parker glad they’re growing! My dendrobium is producing so many kekis also!! I
Garden Of Eden that’s fantastic so sorry I missed that my iPhone misspelled Kekis it is possessed lol.omg thrilled you have kekis I love finding those little babies.
Have you tried a Vanda I purchased a cheap one at Lowe’s sale corner and am trying your method to get new roots a beautiful phal
Too very favorite color and I’m going to try that one you did in moss it’s lovely 😊 Have a beautiful day!😁
Olivia Parker lol possessed 😂😂.
Take care
Olivia Parker alright I haven’t thought of amazon, I’ll check it out!!
What a brilliant young teacher You are! ✨🙏🏽✨
I currently have 1 right now that needs saving. The bottom roots are all dead however there are still 2 old air roots. The white flowers are almost gone and Home depot sold it for $3.00 only.
Fantastica Great price! Hope you nurture it back to health. Best of luck 🌺🌺
Good luck :)
Your video helped me tremendously. I was about to throw 4 orchids away, because their roots were dead. Thank you.
camp grama glad it helped, keep me posted!
I’ve tried so many things too and now I’m trying this. I have ZERO ROOTS...but the leaves are still green so I’m hoping there’s still hope.
idylle♡doll I have replaced water several times. There are also little wiry roots forming and the growing roots are small, maybe an inch, but dark green and firm. Patience! 🙏🏼💚
Do you have another videos? I can't see them after subscriptions. Your video is best one.

Thaks 4 immediate reply.
Your idea is very new n nice. We can understand your talk because u r talking slow n clear.i will try this for my phalaenopsis and catteliya.
