December 2021 I crashed. Was in ICU for over a week. The VA had me on taking nearly a dozen meds. I'm almost convinced they were trying to bump me off. Switching to a civilian doctor was a smart move on my part. Was put on insulin, metformin, and a couple other meds. Lost weight I didn't need to loose. Blood sugar levels were up and down daily. Then I simply stopped all meds in November of 2022. Went to a very low carb diet. Lots of protein and exercise. Today, my blood sugar levels are stable. No spikes or drops. I now take a high power multi vitamin and 2,000mg. of cinnamon. That's all, and I've never been better. My doctor was amazed. She thought at first I was wrong about this, but the A1C tests proved good. After 20 years of being type 2, I'm no longer dependent upon any meds. Yeah, metformin was not all that great for me. Glad I beat the odds. 😏

@NansGlobalKitchen, Yes, it's possible to have diabetes without having any symptoms. It seems you've a complex situation. You should definitely follow up w/ a doctor who can guide you on your symptoms & labs. As for weight loss & high sugar w/ low carb diet & fasting, there could be many factors involved, including stress & lack of sleep. Losing weight requires a comprehensive approach & sometimes professional help. This video might have some answers for you: ruclips.net/video/LZbgcqsrFwA/видео.html.

Stopping metformin can sometimes lead to weight gain, especially if you were previously experiencing weight loss or weight stability from it. Metformin can help manage blood sugar levels and may reduce appetite or improve insulin sensitivity, which sometimes supports weight control. If you’re considering stopping metformin, it’s best to discuss it with your doctor, as they may recommend lifestyle adjustments or other strategies to help manage weight and blood sugar levels. Each person’s response can vary, so having a plan can make the transition smoother.

Why do PCPs try to help you control your diabetes by prescribing meds and sending you off to a Nutritionist, instead of a Sugar Doctor when you first find out you’re diabetic?
That's a good question, @lisamarie686. Many PCPs are knowledgeable about diabetes but an endocrinologist (or 'sugar doctor') specializes in it. Check out my other videos explaining the importance of specialist care.

Taking metformin without having diabetes can have unintended effects, as it is primarily prescribed for blood sugar regulation in people with type 2 diabetes. While some studies suggest it may have other potential benefits, such as weight loss or anti-aging, these are not its intended uses, and self-medicating can lead to issues like low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), gastrointestinal discomfort, or nutrient absorption problems (like vitamin B12 deficiency). It's always best to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any prescription medication.

I am considered obese, but swim a mile once a week, water aerobics once a week, walk 1.5 miles 5 days a week, ride my horse (walk, trot, canter) twice a week, and 30 mins twice a week weight training! I feel good, better being off Metformin. What do I do now, try higher protein diet, take fatty acids? …It’s all a bit overwhelming.
Just when we're trying to get off of medications like metformin you doctors try to put us on another habit forming medication Benfotiamine??? Not cool. I can do Super Berberine, but not benfotiamine.

That's great to hear @Diokyokushin! Keep it up.
Metformin works for me also. I have been taking metformin for 45 years, 2000 mgs daily (I am now 80), with no problems. It works and I have had no kidney damage or any other bad side effect. However, I may now be having the one metformin side effect I do not mind....longevity......

Doctor took me off Metformin to protect my kidneys. Only on glipizide ER 2.5 mg now, was on both!😲😲 on rolo coaster now!!!
In April I switched out the Metformin i'd been taking since 2016. Instead I took 2gr Myo - / D-Chiro-inositol 1-1-1-1 AND 85/100mg Dihydroberberine. After 3 months, my HbA1c was at 7.3 instead of the previous 6.9. My LDL was 2.2 instead of the previous 1.7.
I've been taking neurotropic B vitamins since August 2023, so that was already in the picture. Also
I just started on jardiance 6 months ago. First 3 minths dropped my a1c by 2 points and reversed macroalbumin from over 1,000 to under 300. My endocrinologist went to the next higher dose and im looking firward to my next a1c check and kidney tests.
I didn't know what diabetic nerve pain was until I started taking Metformin and experienced the electrical storms in my feet. When I stopped Metformin, the storms ceased. When I tried metformin again, the nerve pain came back. So I stopped metformin and am nerve pain free.

Hello Dr Egrin good morning is it possible to have diabetes and no symptoms of it? I have all the symptoms of hypothyroids but none for diabetes my cholesterol is a little bit high though. I eat low carb and intermittent fasting of 18/6 but still cant lose the weight.and my sugar reading and BP is still high. Some one said when you are not eating that the liver releases more insulin so thats why the sugar gets high. I an very scared and Confused i have no gallbladder and had a full hysterectomy though and never had any treatments like HRT. Whats going on please help.

Doc what if im taking Berberine Hydrochloride instead of Metformin? Is it ok?

Will stopping metformin lead to weight gain ?

What if you take medformin even if you dont have diabetes?
Taking metformin without having diabetes can have unintended effects, as it is primarily prescribed for blood sugar regulation in people with type 2 diabetes. While some studies suggest it may have other potential benefits, such as weight loss or anti-aging, these are not its intended uses, and self-medicating can lead to issues like low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), gastrointestinal discomfort, or nutrient absorption problems (like vitamin B12 deficiency). It's always best to consult with a healthcare provider before taking any prescription medication.

Last year august 2023 i was diagnosed with diabetes.
The homedocter gave me metformine 1000 mgr.
In 5 weeks i lost 6 kilo's and i was not obese.
I had a lot of problems and became weak.
After that i used Berberine what helped me very good.

I have Hashimoto as well.
The diabetes nurse told me to stop using Berberine and now i am just keeping a diet low in carbs and i am doing fine for months now.

Yes, took 1000 mgs a day for over a year with no blood glucose changes. I had GI issues and intermittent diarrhea. Tried Berberine, no help, and also upset stomach and diarrhea. My A1C is 6.6 (after stopping Metformin) triglycerides 183, all other bloodwork normal.
