Rebounding From Failure - The Rise Of Power Rangers: Battle For The Grid

  • Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid is a fighting game by nWay released on consoles and PC in March 2019.
    During its debut, the game was praised for having solid combat mechanics but also was met with a swath of negative reviews. The criticisms ranged from the small size of the playable roster to the limited number of stages at launch.
    As a result, Power Rangers: Battle for the Grid was viewed by many as a cash grab that was playing off of the nostalgia of the Power Rangers franchise. However, this did not spell the demise of the title and instead prompted the developers to double down and constantly make improvements to their game, taking into consideration both the insight of fighting game veterans and the feedback of the community.

    Pros and Joes alike, we enjoy this game for its content, community, and nostalgia!
    Do not hesitate to reach out to ANYONE mentioned in this video for questions about the game.
    Thanks again to Akshon and Jonah for the opportunity!

      I'm not gonna lie, I've always asked this question but I never seem to get a good answer. This is up for discussion, anyone and everyone, how difficult are actual fighters compared to a platform fighter like Smash Bros? I've tried to play regular fighters, and I can't seem to grasp them like I do smash, even if I try to put time into them. But most people I talk to who play regular fighters seem to say Smash is the one that's harder to learn for them. I understand that both can be difficult in their own manners, but there can be a definite 'harder to learn/get into overall' fighting game. What even could define what makes one game harder than the other?

    • @fearchimera7642
      @fearchimera7642 3 года назад +20

      Basically it comes down to how well you understand the game mechanics and gameplay, as well as overall roster knowledge when it comes to matchups. 3v3 tag fighters vs games like SFV are different mainly due to how fast the game flows.
      I myself have a harder issue learning footsies fighters like SFV but games like MvC and this one, I understand easily cuz I can throw out chaos as I see it lmao.
      I figure the bigger the community, the harder it is to get into just cuz there’s always gunna be someone tryna outwork you so smaller games is a good place to start, just like grid

    • @Cybrtronlazr
      @Cybrtronlazr 3 года назад +74

      I mean 1) Naruto Storm series are never in evo, only anime licensed fighter that's really super popular and in evo is DBFZ. 2) Skullgirls and GG aren't based off real anime just have same anime mechanics of a fighter. 3) You also have to realize the most popular fighting games are no doubt SF, Mortal Kombat, Smash Bros., and Tekken. I do however agree there does have to be more of an effort in getting more fighters out there with more hype for that series. Really only thing we can do is try raising more awareness for these other types of games from different IPs.

    • @killermelga
      @killermelga 3 года назад +109

      @@Cybrtronlazr Why would Naruto Storm ever be at evo (or any competitive scene in general). Power Rangers as a brand wasn't like movie cash-ins, their earlier games were actually quite well recieved and beloved, so BFTG actually had a legacy to live up to. Many like me had felt this void missing since the SNES.

    • @tedjomuljono3052
      @tedjomuljono3052 3 года назад +44

      The games was made by Bandai and Banpresto early on, guaranteeing at least a quite enjoyable experience that is true to the show, it is on the 32 bit era and onwards that PR games are mostly garbage cash ins, due to inept devs

    • @KotCR
      @KotCR 3 года назад +9

      For sure, prior to the 32-bit era the only Power Ranger games that were actually bad were the Gameboy titles. Both the Mega Drive and SNES titles were pretty solid, if not always fantastic, they were certainly "good enough". Even the Game Gear titles were quite innovative, and are probably among the best Fighting Game titles on the platform.
      Shovelware wasn't really a major thing back then though, but I guess the outstanding smash success of the PS1 let to the rise of shovelware, and being a children's TV license property, Power Rangers ended up shuffled into that bag of zero-effort license cash-in titles.
      Since then the only good Power Rangers titles we have had really are Super Legends (which while not amazing, you can see the devs made an effort), and now Battle for the Grid. As great as Battle for the Grid is though, I would like to see Power Rangers successfully transition into having competent titles that aren't just fighting games or beat 'em ups. With some clever design, you could easily make the concept fit well into other genres too - the indie title Chroma Squad is a great example of this.

      @KotCR 3 года назад

      @@Protosilver97 I remember it, but I never played it. It never came to PC in the end (although originally advertised it would) and I'm not a console gamer these days. But I sadly only heard bad things about Mega Battle anyway (probably why that PC version never came); I didn't forget it, it was an intentional omission from my mention of the only good Power Ranger games we've had since the 16-bit era, because from what I heard and read about it, it wasn't good.
      Granted without playing it I couldn't say for certain, but it's true when I saw videos of it in play the hitboxes for the Rangers and enemies in the game seemed fiddly and way-off, and things looked floaty in general, which makes me think the poor reception it got was justified.
      Ultimately, it seems it just wasn't a decent game.

    This game managed to achieve what Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite and Jump Force never could! It managed to appeal to nostalgia, while also improving and having consistently good gameplay that's only gotten better since launch. To top it all off, being able to put RJ, Tommy Oliver and Eric Myers (my three favorite rangers from the entire franchise) is simply astonishing, to say the least. Absolutely love it!

    I’m so glad that you made this video. I played the fuck out of this game when it came out but gave up because the scene wasn’t big in my area, so I went back to melee. I always knew this game was great I just didn’t keep up with it. Seeing that it’s doing well gives me so much hype and I can’t wait to get back into it.

    This video is really cool. I love Power Rangers. I watch the shows, read the comics, made an entire comic history video, and of course play the heck out of this game. Even though I don't win very often its still so much fun to get in and play as my favorite Rangers. I can't wait to see this game continue to develop, add more characters to the roster, and find new ways to be awesome.

    IGN never updated that review when they should've, tons of content/updates came out rapidly during its launch year and by version 2.0, it very much was a complete game even without additional DLC purchases. Full story mode, lobbies, stages, the works. It had an early access vibe but after just some months, it had more value than most fighters.

    Just wanted to say those you commercials brought me back in time to where I hated haircuts and got a brand new mega zord because it was my birthday plus a bribe to get a haircut. It was one of the mega zords that was built from smaller zords(separate robots) made into one bigger one. I had watched and loved all of the power rangers shows from the time I could understand TV to about the time I was 13. I need to look at this game to re-ignite my love for the rangers.
