@m k, it's not exactly policy, but it's definitely common for the reason you described. CDs are so much more expensive in Japan that it's cheaper to import it, but bonus tracks make their own editions more interesting (or other bonus material like the blu-ray concert they got with The Rarities). It happened more when CDs were more popular but it still happens regularly.

If those 2 songs had been promoted well and had music videos, I'm pretty sure they would've been huge hits. The Art Of Letting Go was a sound we hadn't heard from Mariah in a long time.

Lemme just say- Slipping Away is probably one of Mariah's best songs period. It's up there with VOL and WBT and all those great songs. The emotion, the lyrics, the instrumentation, and vocals (duh) are insanely good
I've really always loved 'All I've ever wanted' from Music Box. I recognize it's a bit schmaltzy and very pop/ballady; however, at that time, it was exactly what she was doing and having great success with. It's one of her purest songs.
I love Never Forget You from that album.

“Prisoner” is still one of my favorites by her! I don’t care if anyone mocks me... including Mimi herself! I love that song! And “For The Record” never being a single is one of my biggest gripes with her team! The song literally references some of her other infamous hits in the most subtle and brilliant way! Plus it speaks to every relationship that she and all of us have ever been in and that feeling of wanting to put the record straight. It’s absolute lyric gold!

The number of times E=MC2 appeared on this list proves it's such an underrated album. Many lambs don't seem crazy about this era which I really don't understand.... but I guess different strokes for different folks. For me however it's one of my two Mariah go-to albums.

"I Only Wanted" is such a gem, same as "Runway", "Now That I Know" and "Migrate". She had so many great songs that could have replaced some of her singles, or could have been a double a-side at least
Migrate should have been single after Touch My Body but I don’t what they were thinking putting Bye Bye in a year full of hip hop and R&B songs

Debut: Vision of Love -> There's Got to Be Away (due to the gulf war, it could have got way more attention) -> Love Takes Time -> Someday -> I Don't Wanna Cry
Emotions: Emotions -> Can't Let Go -> Make It Happen (+ live promo) - yeah the single choices were perfect just some slight mismanagement prevented additional number ones.
Music Box: Dreamlover -> Hero -> Without You -> Now That I Know -> Anytime You Need A Friend
Daydream: Fantasy -> Underneath the Stars -> One Sweet Day -> When I Saw You -> Always Be My Baby.
Butterfly: Honey -> Butterfly -> The Roof (+ live promo) -> Breakdown (+ live promo) -> Whenever You Call (+ live promo)-> Babydoll -> My All - Similar management issues to Emotions except more obvious and the same with Rainbow.
Rainbow: Heartbreaker -> Thank God I Found You -> Can't Take That Away -> How Much -> Crybaby (+ live promo) -> Against All Odds
Glitter: Loverboy (+ live promo)
Charmbracelet: You Got Me -> I Know What You Want* (+ live promo and original album inclusion) -> Yours -> Through the Rain - Not really much hit potential on this album, at most promo-single potential. Through the Rain was a bad lead single choice and the song that Boy was remaking was released not even a year before it (it was a very successful single which means no one had time for Mariah's song). BOTH had no appeal to anyone who would buy a Mariah single.
TEOM: It's Like That (would have charted better on the back of a more successful Charmbracelet era) -> We Belong Together -> Shake It Off (should have been released a little bit later) -> Get Your Number (+ live promo might have earned her a UK number one) -> Stay the Night -> Say Something (+ live promo) - I think Mine Again could have charted as a promo single
E=MC2: Touch My Body -> Migrate (ridiculous that it wasn't) -> Bye Bye -> I'll Be Loving You Long Time (+ additional live promo) -> Side Effects -> I'm That Chick
MOAIA: Obsessed (needed more time to breathe -> I Want to Know What Love Is -> Up Out My Face (+ live promo) - Not a lot of hit potential from this album tbh. The whole album could have been released a little later to allow a more breathable E=MC2 rollout not too late or Obsessed would have given Mariah a lot of flack due to Eminem's more serious Recovery album coming out in early 2010.
MIAM: Beautiful -> Thirsty -> You're Mine (+ live promo) -> Dedicated -> You Don't Know What to Do (+ live promo) - album needed to be released closer to Beautiful, it was set up as a comeback and the tour + the albums delay killed this era.
Caution: A No No (+ live promo) -> GTFO (+ live promo) -> Caution -> Stay Long Love You - this album lacked promotion and was really badly mismanaged and Mimi knew it. If the last few eras did better this would have been more successful too and I Don't should have been added to the deluxe with more performances. I think the whole album needed to be done closer to the release of I Don't since she got clout from the NYE disaster.
I love how she has songs she’s widely known for and then a whole other arsenal of songs that could thrash other artist’s careers had her biggest hits not have been so popular.
Circles, it’s a wrap, clown, melt away, and most of E=MC2 are some of my favorite songs of all time. I’m surprised none of them blew up
Yes for 8th Grade, Caution, Faded, Dedicated, Didn't Mean to Turn You On, Stay the Night and BETCHA GON KNOW! I know MIGRATE was sort of a single but it deserved to be a smash. One of Mariah's best bops. I would also add SENT FROM UP ABOVE, DO YOU THINK OF ME and the unreleased fav WHEN I FEEL IT!
Can we talk about how "The Art of Letting Go" could have been SUCH a powerful music video? I think it's one of her best written songs, period. That and Fly Like a Bird are two of her most well written, composed and performed songs from her entire catalogue imo.

I totally agree! But if only the real fans can be that supportive lol. MC has the Best discography for me.. All albums, all songs beautiful. Older songs sound so current. Mariah Carey truly a genius when it comes to making music.

the biggest miss is Migrate. It should've been the second single from EMC2. She had a pretty good chance to have a hit later on her career with Faded, Thirsty and 8th Grade. As much as I love Charmbracelet, my all time fav album of hers, I think whatever she's put out at this particular era, the radio and the media in general would've let it go.

The title track of Caution should have TOTALLY been a single! When Mariah was asking fans what should beer next vid for that rollout, I imagined Caution being a Honey pt. 2- really sexy and James Bond-like. Betcha Gon Know would have been a great continuation of the vibe of Obsessed. It's a Wrap was killer- but she could've done the remix with Mary J Blige, like she did with Up Out My Face. Migrate would've been SUCH a banger music video! Stay The Night could've been such a badass video.
