    It's strange that Capcom was so hesitant to do a Code Veronica remake because of all the classic RE games that's the one that probably needs one the most. I like Code Veronica but there's A LOT wrong with it.

      "needing a remake" isn't their criteria to remake a game. RE4 didn't need one and they did anyway because they knew it would sell very well. Code Veronica is not a popular entry, so it would be a very poor remake with very little effort put into it just like they did with RE3.

    • @milkycannon444
      @milkycannon444 3 месяца назад

      If it was only about money then they would have remade RE 4 5 or 6 first because those are the highest selling RE games not including 2 remake at this point. RE3 make has sold like 8 million copies compared to the originals 3.5, CV would sell great simply because gaming is infinitely more popular and its Resident Evil.

    • @aortaplatinum
      @aortaplatinum 2 месяца назад +1

      It's likely multiple things. First, CV isn't a numbered entry, which has caused confusion in the past and would likely cause more confusion if remade. Second, its lukewarm reception- people don't like CV like 2 and 4, or even 3, it was lauded when it came out among the SEGA crowd but comparing its shoddy ports to the 3 main line games that preceeded it doesn't give a favorable result. The last is that many people misunderstand Alfred's crossdressing as Alexia to be "transphobic", which, first of all it's Japanese why would this surprise you- and second of all that's clearly not what the team was going for in the first place.
      There's a lot working against it.

    • @MrEffectfilms
      @MrEffectfilms 2 месяца назад

      @@aortaplatinum Yeah I get that. I think the amount of people that are crying out for a CV remake would at least have Capcom seriously consider this though and if the same team that did the remakes of RE2 and 4 make it then there's really not much to worry about as far as the games quality.
      As for the Alfred thing I think that can be solved by treating that as less of a shock value moment and more like a Fight Club style twist, maybe even have moments earlier in the game hinting at the fact that Alfred is Alexia that would be great for replays. I guess they'd have to get rid of Claire's line calling Alfred a "cross dressing freak!" even though I find it hilarious especially for the time.

    Good things:
    1. The knife has been greatly improved
    2. The camera work style from Dino Crisis 1 was used and improved upon here.
    Bad things:
    1. How they presented the second half of the game was just baaad, its just basically Chris redoing what Claire went through.

    God how salty I am they're just, at this point, ignoring Code Veronica's existence. In how it's got the short end with ports, and no consideration for remaking. When this game, next to the OG RE1, is an RE game that stands most to benefit from the full remake treatment! Cuz this game, its enemies, characters, voice acting, locations, and unique ideas have SOOO much potential!! All the pieces are present in this game for a top-tier Resident Evil experience, it just needs that retweaking to help it all reach its fullest potential. When I was playing as Chris I had no way of saving that guy from the worm creature because I quite simply didn't have enough ammo to kill it. So I was unable to get the lighter as Chris.

      Sentiments echoed by a large majority of the fanbase. RE4 is fine as is, it doesn't need a remake and there's very little they could change or add to make it relevant. Code Veronica is in desperate need of an overhaul because of how fundamentally flawed it is. It could benefit from being streamlined the way the other two games were, eliminating a large bulk of the unnecessary backtracking as a lot of it felt superfluous. This seems to be an inherent issue with the industry (as well as Hollywood) as they constantly focus on remaking already successful and well received games when the bad ones could use the update more to make them more appealing and potentially improve their status among fans.

    In the PS1 Resident Evil games, if you shoot a zombie until it falls, bullets hit the zombie behind it. In this shitty game, bullets just disappear when this happens, wasting ammo.
    On the PS1, pressing L1 switches to the nearest enemy. After killing one, it auto-aims to the next closest. In this crap, the auto-aim sometimes targets the farthest enemy, leading to being caught by closer enemies due to bad mechanics. How did they manage to make the Dreamcast and PS2 versions have worse mechanics than the PS1 classics? It's beyond comprehension.

  • @Maioly
    @Maioly 2 года назад +54

    16:55 Dino Crisis 2 did that first and better in the ps1
    Regina has dual sub machinegun weapons that will individually target and track enemies with a lot more range and precision than the dual handguns of cvx
    That games overall design also makes better use of them, being more action focused and actually having situations where the dual targetting really comes in hand.
    I honestly cant recall any time in CVX where the dual handguns were actively useful outside of being a fun gimmick (specially since they have super limited ammo and you never pick up more)
    Hell, something else people praise CVX for are its 3d areas and dynamic camera anglea... which dino crisis 1 has done already on the ps1... and again, did arguably better, by actively using its camera angles to simulate something watching or following you through windows and overall bulding tension, which is something I honestly dont remember CVX doing outside 9ne or two rooms.

    I'm kinda glad you weren't shitting so much on Steve like 90% of global population does lol I think he has a really traumatic backstory and actual changes to his character during the game, like, most RE games the protagonists barely change their atitudes during their games, Steve was pretty much the first to have full development which I appreciate.
    The only thing that I can say to help is that half of the backtracking can be avoided in later playthroughs if you plan exactly were to go, for exemple instead of going back to the prison to give the hemostatic to Rodrigo and then coming back again to use the indigo plate, you can do both at once and aliviate that.
    There are some door transitions that are veeeryyy slow and has a heart beating, in that moment the controle vibrates to give tension, so without that feature it becomes super boring, since the game use more resources, naturally the loading times had to be longer, BUT there is a code for Dolphin that makes it possible to skip door transitions, it really improves the passing as expected.

The game has a unique vibe that's different from the trilogy, that I can't quite describe. Alexia's private residence has a really creepy feel, the game isn't focusing about the T-virus soo much and more about the weird Ashford twins and I think makes this game one of the scariest ones. Yet, the game is still cheesy and light hearted. I think that's RE's core identity.

Like I hope as much as I like this it gets a remake treatment and they add a section where you play as Wesker and follow his attack on the island and can use his powers and stuff. And then add in more weapons and also more survivors like there's supposed to be a garrison I wish we saw more survivors and like have them hostile so it makes it more challenging you have to contend with the zombies and monsters but also umbrella employees. I'd also maybe add a small section for Rodrigo he seemed like a cool guy as brief as he was.

    I got CV back when it first released on the DreamCast all those years ago. At the time, I thought it was a fantastic game, and I had a great time with it. I've replayed it several times over the years on various platforms, and, while I still think it's a great game, it's hard to deny that it has some huge design flaws that can easily cause someone who is playing it for the first time to not be able to finish the game, at no fault of their own. Having played it before I'm aware of these flaws and can easily work around them, but I can definitely see how someone playing CV for the first time could end up having a bad time with it.

      Which design flaws?

    •  2 года назад +9

      @@mich722 Well, a big one that stands out to me, is how easy it is for the fire extinguisher (or other items too for that matter) to get left behind in the security box that's in the first part of the game. If that happens then it's not possible to get the Magnum later in the game.
      I believe there may also be a little bit of weirdness involving parts with character switching, where, if you don't know how things are going to play out in advance, it's pretty easy to get into a situation where the character you're currently playing as may struggle to progress if the other character happens to be carrying certain weapons and items instead of having left them in an item box.
      There's also the boss fight near the end where you're supposed to just run away while taking damage and healing. If you don't have enough healing items there I believe it could stop you from being able to finish the game. I know it's theoretically possible to get past that part without taking any damage, but, in order to do that you've got to play in a pretty strange way that I don't think would be fair to expect players to figure out.

      If you pick up all the ammo you see while playing as Claire (something that you would absolutely be doing first time round because of how hard the game is), then Chris cannot pick them up in his run through, meaning you’d have to play through the first half of the game with very little/no ammo. The game does not tell you about this so you would have no way of knowing.
      As the other guy said, you can permanently lock yourself out of getting the magnum if you don’t remember some random item that has no apparent purpose for the 90% of the game.
      You have to take forced damage during the Steve chase scene. He can kill you in two hits and you have to constantly heal to get past him. If you do not have any herbs or First Aid spray, you can get permanently stuck here. You can get around him but you need to either do some bizarre movement that isn’t obvious at all or abuse a pause glitch. Neither of these are intended by the devs
      You can become permanently stuck in the game’s final stretch if you don’t forget to use the item box as Claire to leave weapons for Chris. The game does not warn you about this so you can have all your best weapons and ammo stuck with Claire and leave nothing for Chris, making the final boss unbeatable.

I never suffered from the character swap halfway through on my first playthrough, but did on my second completely forgetting about it so it kind of felt like my fault. Code Veronica recaptured the atmosphere of the first RE & some of the segments were absolute nightmare fuel. The video of Alfred and Alexia torturing bugs as children and smiling is a million times more chilling and creepy than anything the loser antagonists of 4-6 have going on, and that was accomplished in a very subtle and simple way. The story even takes the time to humanize them as characters and gives us a genuinely tragic moment when Alfred dies at Alexia's feet and she sadly cradles his body in her lap. The twisted and parasitic sibling relationship that Alfred and Alexia have also contrasts nicely with the more healthy and caring relationship that Chris and Claire have, adding another layer of depth to the whole story. The antagonists of RE4 are just the worst, comic book villains with no depth or humanity or realism whatsoever.

  • @cortfoss9465
    @cortfoss9465 2 года назад +5

    I'm going to be completely honest. I played CV for the first time around August of last year. I tried, tried, and tried to play that thing, but as the first RE game I'd ever played that used the tank controls, I wasn't having any fun with it. I wanna say it took me about a month before I finally made it past the first prison section. Every other time I'd just give up if I died and called it a day. And so I tried and tried and tried some more until I finished the game. I didn't hate it, but it wasn't a game I enjoyed fully. The final battle with Alexia had me stumped for a bit as well, with her 15 billion simulatanious attacks, I just grew tired of it after awhile and had to resort to stashing my inventory with flame rounds and herbs just to kill her.
    Now's the funny part. I thought about it. Why on earth did I keep coming back? I know I was frustrated with how it functioned, and the many pitfalls of the game were terribly annoying, so why didn't I hate it? I didn't even feel board by it. I actually liked it. Not in the same way I did as RE2R or 3R, but in the same way I enjoy darksouls. I enjoyed the challenge that I eventually overcame. And it made me feel weird inside. I can't really explain it other than that.
    I put it down for a while and only occasionally returned to it, but I'd usually stop before I got to the ending and just started over the next time I replayed it. Until this last Christmas. I heard about the tradition of playing CV on Christmas, since it takes place around that time, while not exactly on it, it's an easy enough mark to use, and it's a reason to replay an RE game.
    So I start it up, and I play it, and I'm actually enjoying myself, now in the same way I recalled feeling when I played through RE2R. I wasn't dying very often, I had enough ammo to last awhile, and I knew I probably wouldn't have the time to pick it up again if I dropped it then and there. So for the next 5ish hours,. I just sat there, playing the game from start to finish, having a blast. and I really didn't understand it. i thought the game was tough, so why wasn't it as challenging. Yeah, I knew the locations and what went where by now... but surely that couldn't have made the game feel all that different. i have a pretty good memory so I usually knew what went where anyway, so it's not like immediatly knowing where something went was all that much different from me remembering where I saw that one door with that one engraving in it.
    I guess maybe it's more of me knowing the item placement than the paths and doors well. That's really the closest thing I could compare it to.
    So yeah. CV, I enjoy it.

    Why I dislike Code: Veronica.
    1. Steve is annoying
    2. Alfred is a poorly written character .
    3. Alexia has no character.
    4. The auto aiming system doesn't do a full 180 degree turn. Makes targeting enemies behind you difficult.
    5. Toned down gore.
    6. Weapons have little to no impact. (Especially the Bow Gun)
    7. Steve is a pervert.

    If any game in history deserves and needs a remake, its RECV. And I dont mean a RE game. I mean out of games period its in top 5 that needs a remake imo.
    It could be a great game if certain things were addressed and updated.
    Skipping this one to make a new RE4 is pointless.

  • @Capt.DanInJapan
    @Capt.DanInJapan 2 года назад +2

    Okay, let's keep this brief.
    Noob traps - Definitely a problem. Not exclusive to RE:CV but definitely more pronounced than in the previous games.
    Steve's character - If you must cram an awkward potential love interest into a game, at least make that character somewhat charming and charismatic. Besides, it's weird to see a 17-year-old capable of flying without any apparent training. Still, whatever your opinion of Steve as a character, I have to respect Capcom's attempt to have a male NPC as a potential love interest, especially given the demographics of gamers.
    Replayability. The length of the game presented something of a barrier to replaying the game. RE3, for example, kept the game short but provided multiple outcomes tied to choices and QTEs in the game. I feel that RE:CV might have benefitted from something like that to keep replays fresh.
    Things I really enjoy:
    The soundtrack. Not a note out of place.
    The Ashford twins. I can't think of more unusual yet strangely compelling antagonists in gaming off the top of my head. Don't get me wrong, there are better enemies, but these ones are... unique.
    Rockfort Island. Sure, it's big but it does offer varied and exciting parts, each with their own charm and threats.
    Overall, I actually enjoyed RE:CV. Does it hold up nowadays? Probably not. But it will remain a pleasant memory.

I played it originally on the Dreamcast back in the day. I had always remembered loving it. I then played it about a year or so ago using an emulator. I still enjoyed it and it held up to a degree, but I saw all the flaws. The game dragged which was not helped by the "ending" that wasn't an ending and lead into the Arctic. I had also forgot how much of this game became Chris' game when I think most people remember this as Claire's game. And the bugs in that hallway.... f them. They do indeed break the rule and they poison you too. F them. The other rule breaks is there are "bosses", you can just skip and not fight. You can just simply grab the item in those rooms and leave. Oh... and the stun locking on the final boss is just annoying.

    A fantastic and refreshing point of view, honestly. You've explained far better than a lot of reviewers why this game can be so dull and frustrating to play on a first playthrough, and you're showing far more respect to the game than you were given back. A lot of fans who've played it at the time have a skewed perspective because they don't have to re-experience the shitty parts they've only ever felt once. It's like Mad Space from SA2; you might eventually enjoy it, but that 1st time (arguably many more times after), man, those 15-20 minutes wasted due to terrible conveyance... Even on a second playthrough CV is just marginally better, it's decent at best and plodding at worst.

He says, "CVX is basically a RE game that tries to keep the old style from the PS1 games but also add some moderations to it." In addition, i pick this game every here and there because the one thing that holds it back is the replayability. I hate that this game uses the RE2 grading system and if you want that A rank, you can only save in one place and that's it. Another reason is how the game makes you use the knife to save ammo so if you don't try to master it, you're not getting far in the game.

    Yeah, I've nearly played all of the main RE games. But Code Veronica is the first one that I've struggled to complete. Not because of difficulty, but because...I dunno.
    Usually with RE games, I'll fixate on them and go strong until I finish them. But with Code Veronica, I've taken breaks that last days, even a week at a time. And I'm really not sure what particularly I'm struggling with in the game.
    But this video explained it perfectly. The backtracking, the slower pace/busy work.
    It's a shame too, because I feel like Code Veronica has all the ingredients that make the previous RE games so great. Great zombies, a fair amount of locations (including a smaller mansion), puzzles that make you think, a decent soundtrack, and plenty of great sci-fi horror tropes. But none of the ingredients were implemented well.

    I'm glad you mentioned the controls of the HD version. They are terrible. This a problem Capcom seems to have a lot when rereleasing their older games. I like to rest my thumb on the square button to run and then use the lower part of my thumb to press X for opening doors and such. That way you never even have to lift your thumb. This was the first RE I actually owned and beat
    Otherwise I had just rented the first 3 or played at friends houses
    I loved it and it turned me into a pretty hardcore RE fan at the time. Beat it over and over and finally bought and beat the originals too
    Got a GameCube just for the remake later (still my absolute favorite RE game)
    I was like 12-13 though. I didn't really get game design on a level I do now. Really 3D gaming was still in it's beginning stages overall
    I replayed it later in college
    And hated it. It's bland and uninspired in level design throughout the majority of the game. The enemies aren't very scary, or anything else really.
    There's a lot of obtuse things that artificially increase difficulty and can soft lock you out of progression. Like I know the game well because I played it so much, but I don't blame people who get totally roadblocked by the time they hit the tyrant fight on the plane
    And the story.... It's where the series strayed away from conspiracy Sci Fi horror and instead started to play out like a bad anime with cheesy ass villains

      😂 I had the EXACT same experience. It was great when I was a kid. Replayed it in my late 20's and was repulsed.

      @@I-own-your-feelings it will hold a special place in my heart for getting me into the franchise, but I can't see myself ever picking it back up for a replay
      The praise that I'll give it is Alyson Court was giving a much better performance as Claire this time around

      @EGR18 I'm in a big fan group on FB for it and see the same shit.
      I love the classics and grew up playing them. There's a couple of bonafide masterpieces among them
      Code Veronica just isn't one of them
      Really these days the only classic style one that I really enjoy revisiting is the original remake. Which is still my favorite one to this day

      @EGR18 big agree
      CV I find downright bad
      0 is like... Painfully mediocre. It's another one that I don't think I'm ever going to play again, but I would choose that one overcovered Veronica if I had to.
      The original 2 and 3 are both still amazing games. I'm just spoiled by the remakes. Just wish they did 3 a little better overall

      I don't see how the series strayed away from conspiracy sci fi horror here. And you're bitching about a bad anime cheesy ass villain when that shit also in the first 3 RE games? lmao

    I completed this game when it came out and really liked it, I'm currently going through it again and I still enjoy it however what I'm realising now is that ever since Resident evil 1 and 2, the devs felt that there idea of building tension is throwing more enemies at you, like with Nemesis and this, at time your overwhelmed with enemies, when in actual fact the original 2 games just did it better, they let the tension an atmosphere build with the not knowing where you are going to encounter a zombie or whatever, if anything Nemesis and Code Veronica we're kind of where they went more action orientated, without going as far as 4, 5 and 6 obviously. Still I really like it and feel this could be a ton better if remade, I'm not sure they will but I hope so

    Yes it sucked so bad finally someone that says it. If in the comments you say “I like code Veronica” just stop. Code backtrack is what it should be called. Slightly better than 6

      I like code Veronica, the backtracking was only a slight inconvenience to me, I loved the challenge, music, sounds, cliche old school story, and the characters. Whole game was a ride and I didn't mind the tank controls even though that was a big complaint with old re games, beating the cargo boss with only a knife was my hardest challenge but I loved every second of it (probably souls game masochism)

      Stop gaslighting people and get gud scrub. Complaining about backtracking in an RE game is so remedial.

    i remember playing this back as a child, i like this game but my first playthrough i was stuck on a save room as chris and im in danger status without any ammo and there are hunters that can cut my head and i remember i forgot to get the empty fire extinguisher container on the metal box that you need to put all metals you have to progress
