Same. That was the only real thing I can criticise it for. The A/B in the remake just doesn’t make sense as they’re the same bosses in the same locations. They could have crossed paths more
The wasted potential for a new A/B scenario... For example, when Claire finds her brother's diary in the original game, a cutscene where Leon enters the STARS office occurs. A new "mixed" scenario would be something like the game making us play Leon after finishing reading the diary with Claire and go to the STARS office to actually start the cutscene or something.
As great as the remake is, it doesn't render the original obsolete at all. While the remake arguably improves on most aspects, the original still does some things better, particularly the A and B scenarios.
Exactly, replay value is FAR more important than any improvements, if those improvements include replay value as such the original then it will gain the higher ground, but remake 2 doesn't have that replayability.
Remake removes enemies and certain areas. It's supposed to include everything the original has and add stuff to it, not swap shit around and re-imagined shit. That's why it's an inferior version for the modern gamers.
I can't help but to have an immense knot in my throat whenever I remember Paul, his interpretation of Leon was so perfect, young, rookie, but hugely heroic when he needed to be, not to mention his scarring and painful scream in THAT particular moment from Scenario B, I also have Paul Mercier in high regard for his grown up and mature Leon, he was excellent, but I don't have enough words to describe how much I love and I'll forever love the OG Leon, RIP to one of the most wholesome and important voices from my unforgettable childhood
@@Lunaria.Praesentia Why are we saying RIP, did he pass away? Edit: I just looked it up and yeah, that is very sad he died at age 56. My dad died 2 years later in 2022 at age 58, so Leon and my dad were both the same age. Very very sad to hear that :(
I didn’t love the new Leon voice actor in the RE2 remake but he was far better in RE4 remake and I started to really like more there. I guess since he wasn’t a rookie and didn’t sound so kiddy in part 4.
It would have been nice if RE2 Remake had another few months or even a year in the oven. That way we could have gotten all the cut content and an improved story more like the original. I would have preferred one fantastic RE2 remake as opposed to having both a great RE2 remake and a mediocre RE3 remake.
Capcom took advantage of fan service and turned it into a modern new age "speedrun friendly" version of RE2 that focused too much on graphics and gameplay and half assed everything else. Capcom can't do RE right without Mikami.
@@FoxsDumbSeriesMaker If everyone is smart, they won't pre-order it after RE3R. RE4 doesn't need a remake because the fan made HD project is all we need. Code Veronica is more deserving but they will probably fudge that up too.
Unlike remake 1 ,where I believe it replaces the original, remake RE 2 and original RE 2 are completely different experiences with different strengths and weakness that both should be experienced Great video keep it up !
Because remake for 1 has everything the original has and is expanded upon. RE2 Remake doesn't offer everything the original have, it took stuff out, it changes shit around, it removes some areas, it re-imagined some areas, it took out enemies. That's why it stands alone and cannot replace the original.
Hi, I am new to the franchise. I have played the remake of RE2 as my first RE game, then I played the original. I got to be honest, I like the original a lot more. Don’t get me wrong I don’t hate the remake, but there is many reasons why the original is always better. I really loved how different each scenario was an increased the replayability. Not only that there were some moments that genuinely felt more powerful, sad, or scarier than the remake. Also I love the original version of Mr. X.
Og Re2 is an absolute classic. And Re3 is the perfect follow up, getting to explore a fully realised and destroyed raccoon city was unreal. We got a little glimpse of the city at the start of Re2 and they designed it perfectly for Re3. To be honest when they first announced an Re2 remake I was hoping they would remake it like they did the first game, some extra areas and story with the beautiful pre rendered backgrounds and lighting. Tank controls aswell, I would've loved it. Still the RE2 Remake was quality I was happy enough. If we could have gotten Re3 remake with same kind of remake they did for the first game I think it could have been something really really special
@@dustingonzalez8080 dude same! I was so interested in watching people speed run it I ended up trying myself...I got a sub 1 hour on standard but hardcore I could only get like a 1:10ish. How did you do?
Agreed, it's the major edge I give Original RE2 over RE2 Remake. I do prefer RE2 remake for the better structured story, gameplay, character's and "MR.X", But it's the only RE that I enjoy playing BOTH versions often side by side (I only ever played RE1 Original once to beat it as Chris and Jill and never touched it again, preferring to play RE1 Remake whenever I replay the first game; And RE 3 to it's remake........yeah Original RE3 all the way, I like playing RE3 Remake for sure once my disappointment with it faded, seriously overhype fucking SUCKS! I only got overhyped because I'll tell you, I bought RE2 Remake on sale during a Halloween sale....the year before the lockdown, and enjoyed the hell out of it that when RE3 remake was being promoted, I bought RE3 on my PS3 to play and beat it then bought RE3R digital when it first came out.....and I felt like I payed way more then I did! RE2 Remake I would have bought it at full price no sale on day 1 if I could have....I limit how many new games a year I buy with those I don't having to wait till a sale and a good moment in my finances allow me to buy them later...but I would have bought it on release if I didn't have another game at the time that filled up the limit I mentioned I could buy! But RE3 was not priced right for what I got...I felt like the stupid Multiplayer attached to it was what jacked up the price honestly! If it was I would have loved to JUST PURCHESE RE3 Remake ONLY for less then what I paid for! I did it with RE1 Remake on the switch as while I don't murderously hate RE0, it like Code Veronica was a one time playthrough back on the Wii/PS3 respectfully and I have no interest in replaying them ever again! hence I'd rather pay less for RE1 Remake ONLY!) RE 2 is considered the best of the series as far as I'm concern with RE4 being a close second (enjoyed it and enjoyed the changes, alongside it being what got me INTO the series in general as I was a scardy cat for Horror growing up and RE was no different when my dad bought RE1 Original on the 3DO...tried it once then never got past the First Zombie with Jill cause I wussed out after that cutscene, and as Chris, I ran around like an idiot not knowing what I was doing and quit when I ran into Rebecca in the chemical Save Room because I lost my heart again! Never touched it again and only saw RE2 and RE3 at my cousins till RE4 on the Wii which I bought on a whim to overcome my fear! RE1 was when I was 13 and I got RE4 when I was around my mid 20's I believe, I never overcome my fear of the dark unknown till I was 20 and still thought a Xenomorph would get me if I left my closet open at night till I was 21! Now I eat horror and horror games for breakfast thanks to RE4 getting me to give them a chance! Happy my PS3 let me get the RE games I couldn't find again like RE1 Original to RE 2, RE3 and CV.....RE5 was a massive disappointment to me as you can guess because I'm not a fan of the multiplayer they were forcing into the series! I was okay with it in Multiplayer games like Mercenary mode, but not the single player! RE5 was fun to play with GOOD Rando's with Mics for the sake of commentary, but I never play it single player because the thing I like about RE6 Single Player, my partner can't DIE! SHOULD HAVE BEEN THE SAME WITH RE5 SINGLE PLAYER!!!) I just find myself missing the old style of Survival Horror games from classic RE1-3 (though at least RE2 Remake showed how RE4 CAN AND ALREADY SHOWED it can still work like the classics if done right)
Missing A and B scenarios in the remake do not only cause a lack of replayability. It causes much much bigger problems. Not having actually different campaigns anymore makes it absolutely impossible to tell a consistent canon story because Leons and Claire's games are now conflicting instead of complementing. Making campaigns like such alternate timelines is absolutely inappropriate and dysfunctional for ANY game about different characters experiencing different things but being part of one and the same overall events. I still have no clue how in gods name Capcom could make this game being working like that. And I have no clue how people can even be happy with what we got here...
@@pretenderxxx2385 It's called "taking what you can get!" Yeah they COULD have fixed this issue before releasing the game, but the only reason we know about the Missing A and B is BECAUSE those before bought the game before word of mouth so not getting them doesn't effect the rest of the game much (Games still solid, so really you can say they only fucked up the B scenario and I can see ALOT of things they could have done to fix things! Such as blocking off parts of the RPD and making them into their own section to avoid major interactions between Leon and Claire, hell they could alter where you interact with the secondary characters! Pretty much try to avoid it just being a slightly altered A scenario. And for the Final G, an emergency protocol in case Players get to that Fight with their B scenario character with little ammo to avoid a no win scenario! They made it too fucking Bullet Spongey, Cause I got to that fight as Claire with alot of ammo for all my weapons, ESPECIALLY the Gatling Gun, Yet I suffered my first game over in the B scenario with her to Final G cause I ran out of everything and had no way to attack other then my pistol with no indication I was DOING ANYTHING! My second attempt was only victory and BARELY because I started out with Magnum rounds first before the gatling gun and almost thought I was going to see another game over when the cutscene played) Of course in a way this likely attributed to why they REALLY got lazy and Content Cutting with RE3 Remake (An Okay Game, but if your like me and got it on day 1 overhyping yourself, well it took me TWO YEARS after beating it the first time to go back to it on Hardcore and Nightmare because I had a sense of fun....but my disappointment with what was cut out since I played Original RE3 made me feel listless playing RE3 Remake that any good fun was usually ignored for that disappointment! It's how they handled Nemesis really! I know at times he does fuck off in the Original, but with the new engine their was no need to limit his appearance like they did and turn him into WHATEVER THE FUCK HE TURNED INTO after the train!) Seriously what they did with the A and B in RE2 Remake PALES compared to what they did with RE3 Remake (I ended up not buying Village because of my doubts with Capcom at that point......and because it took me a bit longer to secure a PS5 LOL)
@@paulman34340 This is exactly why RE3 remake is such trash because of this mentality i take what i get. Original devs dropped RE2 because they made a game that they wanted to play and not just for the green which is the case today.
@@CrysisFear I know, it's why I pointed it out by using the RE3 Remake as an example! The last one being RE3 Remake! I prefer to punish companies who I will still do business with but hate what their doing by never giving them what they really want, me buying the game at full price! It's cool to see how older games continue to give enjoyment so many years later. It's shows how good they were at their craft despite limits in technology. Enjoyed the video and have a nice day everyone.
i loved the remake but the original will always be my favorite out of the entire franchise. Leon and Claire are some of the most memorable characters in gaming thanks to two Amazing Canadian Voice Actors, Alyson Court and the Late Paul Haddad. Rest in peace Paul, you were a big part of Resident Evils success and the fans will always love you for that.
Rip paul haddad, i wasnt aware of the series before he died but i respect him and the original game’s immensely the games are so much fun and attention grabbing
Which parts of the RE 2 remake were "flawed"? I could see calling the RE 3 remake flawed, however, I think the RE 2 remake is one of the best remakes of all time, if not THE best. I think the RE 2 remake is MUCH better than RE 1, and I loved that game.
@@danieldevito6380 the zapping system is missing. The A and B scenario none existent (dont tell me 1st and 2nd run). Where is extreme battle mode? Great game, yes. but still flawed in my opinion. Not hating on the remake. I still enjoyed it. I still prefer going back to the original.
Almost all enemies are zombies. That is one. The enemies are MOOONSTERS WITH SPECIAL POWERS not sick and pathetic creatures living on borrowed time. T virus creatures should not be "overpowered" like the G virus monster. The dialogue is similar to an average hollywood script. It is so edgy and cynical at times it bores me. "HOLD YOUR FIRE I AM A HUMAN" > "fuck... " or "WTF". Claires voice actress is acting too much like a californian cartoon character. The enforced romances always harm the story. Scenario B lacks impact and a lot out of it was cut out. A lot was cut out and what we got back are generic sewer and sci fi settings wich feel very off. The music was very quiet and generic. The original was 100% atmosphere. I said it was flawed, the original resident evil 2 also has flaws. All games do. I remember the original more fondly because I AM ONE OF THOSE REPORTER TYPES, ALWAYS LOOKING FOR A SCOOP. RE 2 and RE 2 remake are good games, definately tier A+ but not the best Resident evil games.
Re2 is one of those games I played for the first time in 2019 and have played through completely 5 times since and loved every bit of it. I even unlocked all the infinite ammo weapons, a(s) ranked claire a/leon b. Re2make is a great game but I feel it is missing something that makes it truly surpass the original
@@ashharkausar413 i doubt it because like I said, I played it in 2019 and kept coming back, but remake i only played through once(twice depending on how you count claire a leon b) and enjoyed it, but didn't feel the same draw as what I got with the original.
I prefer the original. Way more finished, and ironically has less plot issues than the remake. Also, better Irons, since the remake one doesn't know what subtlety is, and his death is lame compared to OG Irons.
Yeah, I felt it weird that you fight literally the SAME bosses for all 4 playthrough (with the exception of G-4 and Mr.X's final form) and that Leon and Claire only meet up 3 times in the entire story
I've noticed most remakes focus on production rather than creative potential. It is what gets the masses hyped, so I suppose it's a better business plan. Not saying remakes aren't good, they just aren't near the quality of their predecessors (in terms of creative direction/feeling like more complete games).
RE1.5 is actually really interesting with the many things the remake brought back after being cut from the PS1 version. It's not that fun to play, but it's interesting if you played 2 Remake beforehand, it's neat.
RE 2 original was my first wow moment as a kid, I was eight years old and the only games I had was a demo that came with the ps,and re:2. That game gave me nightmares but I was still addicted to it, I even had the toys, over 20 years later, this game gets released, I’ve already beat both scenarios on every difficulty at least 50 times, re2 is a big part of my gaming life, especially with the original soundtrack..
I was hoping you'd mention the use of music and sound design in RE2 Original vs the new scores or lack thereof in RE2Make. For me RE2 was iconic simply for the scores.
I played my first playthrough with the original score for that reason. Shame they made it DLC though. Should have been packed in with the game from the start.
@@bb5307 the preorder had it in by default, iirc. But yeah, i agree, they should have had it in by default. Literally costed them quite a few dimes just to replace the appropriate tracks.
By the way, J, the remake DOES mention in a file that William needs a genetically compatible host to reproduce. It's the file found in the save room after the first meeting with Annette. I think the developers did it on purpose honestly. I think they made the story more subtle and less "in your face" because they wanted a more cinematic approach, not to mention the fact that Dark Souls games style of storytelling was really popular when the remake dropped.
RE2 has become one of those comfort games for me I just vibe with so hard ^^ Everything from the satisfying exploration/management/gameplay loop, the music, the characters, the character designs, settings, I just love. It's such a unique case for a video game remake where the remake is so god damn well made and fantastic as a game on its own - even doing a lot to improve on the original. But still goes worth mentioning how much lost potential there was when compared to the original. Especially for me, who has that passion for the original game, and seeing how much RE1 remake did for its source material.
The remake has a better level design, it’s your opinion but I highly disagree. The remake is too easy, The original gives you a stronger challenge. As far as level design goes. Remake, removes too much challenge. Original, forces you to think about everywhere you’ve been so far, and how to proceed forward. One feels very linear, and the other just doesn’t.26:47 don’t you guys believe it, you do stuff way more challenging in the original. Play it for yourself compared and see. I respect his opinion I do, but I disagree and it doesn’t make any sense to me.
Re 1 remake is probably the greatest horror game remake of all time....as far as resident evil 2.....maybe I'm biased but I'm born 89 and I got re2 for my n64 1999 my mom got it for me I was 10 years old....I will never forget that feeling playing it the next day it was raining outside and my baby sister sat in my room watching me, that probably is one of the most special moments in my life...but then when re2 remake came out me and my wife just got our first house and I sat up all night playing the remake in 2019....with that being said, nothing beats the classic re2 I still beat and enjoy that game to this day, and it's one of the reasons I would NEVER give up my ps3....so happy I have retro re2 and retro re3 on my ps3....
the motivations of Annette Birkin is worse than original. She basically acts like Sherry is meaningless until she’s on the verge of death after William attacks her.
I completely disagree about the characters being better in RE2 Remake, especially Chief Irons and Annette Birkin. They made Irons completely balls to the wall insane for no reason, in the og he was crazy sure but he was also still believable. He felt overly evil because "he's a badguy". Annette basically has the same issues, she has like zero character in the remake, in the original you can tell she cared about William and Sherry, in the remake she sounds like she just doesn't even give two shits about Sherry.
I have to say I'm surprised that our thoughts line up on the story for RE2make. I figured I was the only one who felt disappointed in how Leon and Claire's Stories were no longer intertwined, and that the didn't really do much in the way of building a friendship between them. I mean, if they were meant to intertwine, Annette would have had to die in front of Sherry, come back to life, then help Leon, then shoot Ada and finally die again. But yeah. Just had to express my pleasant surprise. Great video as always!
One of my gripes about the RE2 remake is they really half-assed the "second run", there is no true B scenario, and no zapping system. The OG RE2 had much better pacing, and the unfolding of the story. I love how in the original you don't even see Mr. X until the B scenario. When I encountered him for the first time it was such an unexpected shock! Plus in the B scenario you have different boss fights. In the remake, for the most part you have the same boss fights in the second run. The only thing that stood out was the new Mr. X final form battle at the end. When I played the second run, I was majorly let down. It was great how in the original they saved a lot of stuff for the B scenario exclusively, it really helps it feel like you're playing two different games. I love the RE2 remake, but there's still plenty I prefer about the original over the remake. The pacing was just perfect, and to me it's magic that seems hard to capture nowadays with modern games.
I prefered the Tyrant in the original. It was a genuine wtf moment when it appeared in scenario B and ramped up the jump scares. In remake it gets old real fast, and it ends up just being an annoyance when you want to do a puzzle
Actually, the N64 version is missing the EX Battle mode from every other re-release. Otherwise it's uncompromised and even adds a new analog control scheme that RE Remake would later bring back.
OG RE2 is still my favorite RE and one of my top 5 games of all time. It's near flawless and has some of the best pacing a game can have. I do still love RE2make though and have put almost 100 hours in it. I feel like if they just built on RE2 like the original REmake did RE1 instead of cutting and changing things it would have surpassed the original. I'd legit pay full price for a Director cut of RE2make with full A/B scenarios and some cut things restored.
Sadly probably the only thing we're gonna get is the unnecessary graphics upgrades to RE2R, RE3R and RE7 sometime this year. Would be the perfect time to add some DLC to them though.
This was a fantastic review! I’m so excited that one of my favorite RUclipsrs is exploring one of my favorite game series for the first time! Can’t wait until you get to the original Resident Evil 3 - It’s one of my favorite games of all time, up there with the remakes of RE1 and 2!
I'm an older gamer that was around for the release of RE2 on the PS1 and N64. Still one of my fondest childhood memories, playing one whole scenario in a day without saving once. The tension was palpable, trying to get that coveted S-Rank finish.
I like the original more because it feels a bit more complete. RE2 remake fell through for me when they didn't have the zapping system and both A and B scenarios ended the same.
Zapping is so overrated and really not as great as people recall it is. Why on earth anyone would think locking items you picked up on B scenarios is a good idea when you have to literally deal with the exact same zombies and locked doors is beyond me. It's a flawed mechanic that is basically impossible to perfect. You either end up with a B scenario that is piss poor easy or one that cherry picks what sort of content it wants to lock you out from.
I like the remake, but they messed up the A B scenarios so badly. The timeline inconsistencies really suck. Clair and Leon shouldn't experience repeated events the way that they do, that makes no sense. Kinda lazy on capcom's part and it's the only issue I have with the remake.
The characters with the remake are a lot worse than in the original. Irons in the original was more charismatic he seems off but given the situation also "failing to protect the mayors daughter" you can understand at least through the eyes of the main characters, he sounds more distraught. But even through that he still came of as polite and calm, it's good that he is like that cause that's how he made it to be chief of police. In the remake he came off as crazy, quickly threatening them with a gun which makes no sense. No charm or charisma, when Claire said "he's the chief of police?" I was just as surprised as her, that's not Irons in anyway. If he was looking for the pendant, since he is crazy in the remake why not just hold them at gunpoint and ask for the pendant. If sherry declines then just say that he will shoot Claire or something instead of dragging Sherry to the orphanage. Which is more dangerous since you would have to go outside where it's dangerous. You have potential zombies or whatever to take care of while dragging a uncooperative girl and he's using a revolver so he only has so many shots. One thing that doesn't make sense in the remake is that Irons is the one that trapped Ben in the prison area but that's just dumb, if he wanted to kill Ben he would have let him free since there are zombies and other monsters around the station that would kill him. Or just shoot him and then if someone said anything he could have claimed Ben was a zombie. In the original Ben locked himself in the cell in order to protect himself from the monsters. Annette Birkin is one of the most destroyed characters in the remake, in the original while still a workaholic she still loved both William and Sherry since in the original when William is shot she is horrified and quickly tries to look for help, with Sherry she told her to go to the police station cause she said it was safer there. She always did think of her even if she didn't spend a lot of time with her. You can tell in the original that she does love her very much since when Claire (someone she doesn't know) tells her that Sherry is in the sewers she drops everything to look for her especially to find her before William does. She wrote down the instructions to create the vaccine for Sherry. Another part that shows her love for her husband is when she gets mad at Claire for "killing" him. Even as a monster all she saw was William which is why she dropped her guard and is very protective of the G-virus since it's very important to her husband it's also very important to her. In the remake she doesn't really care for William or Sherry telling Claire that she and William were "more married to their work" and ignoring Claire just to "observe " his transformation and the most egregious thing she did was what she did to Sherry in the sewers. Her daughter is alone and scared in the sewers and she dared to tell her daughter that she "didn't have time for that" and proceed to shut off the camera, she didn't tell her to stay put that she will go to her. If it was the old Annette she would have come running towards her. With gameplay having Mr.X following you around is more annoying since he makes you have to wait to pass by so you can be on your way. There are right way and wrong ways of doing that. the original Nemesis was a good example of having a enemy follow you the right way, Mr.X in the original is fine as well since the times she shows up he does corner you in cramped spaces. in the remake everytime you hear his footsteps you will more likely go "ughh" since you have to wait. He feels more like a pesky fly.
It's so interesting to listen to someone's review of the original RE2. Most of my feelings and critiques come from the game experience from that specific time.
wasn't big on story based games but my younger sister recommended RE2 Remake and it became one of my top 3 favourite games of all time (Hard Mode was so tense my god) love the review !
I love all the people arguing about which one is better... OG VS Remake. *Meanwhile, me:* "Why not both?" ;) Seriously both OG and Remake are some of the best games ever made.
@@themanguycastshow2397 You can't deny that the lack of zapping and meaningfully different, plot consistent A B scenarios was corner cutting. They still tried slipping the latter into the game it was just not even close to being complete because of time/budget constraints. But yeah i mean, it does a lot of great things and i can excuse some things getting lost in transition.
@@moreisallyouneed4175 A/B scenarios and zapping system are two different things. Zapping system is doing something in the A scenario that affects the B scenario like leaving either the sub machine gun or side pack for the B character in the weapon storage room.
Do kind in mind, people (such as myself) were waiting for RE2make since REmake was released on Gamecube. And we were certain that we would get it.... we didn't know at the time we would have to wait 15+ years... we thought maybe 2-3 years. With that being said, I still love the original more since that was my game. I thought RE2make was fantastic, but it was disappointing that they basically removed RE2's gimmick of zapping/A and B. And the fact that they removed pretty much all interaction with Claire and Leon with each other. The one other thing I disliked was new Irons. I thought the original did it better. This was compounded with the removal of an iconic line, which was strange since they kept in the iconic moment from the FMV when you open the door and Leon points his gun and says get down. What I'm referring to with Irons is this moment (if one is old enough to remember) that was in ALL the marketing for the original RE2. It was in all the commercials etc. "Everyone's gonna die.." I remember hearing it so many times, its tattooed on my brain. But nope.. they didn't have it. Side note, his death in the original was far better. The remake made it look like a joke. The spawn bursting out and ripping him open from his stomach to his shoulder was awesome.
What I don’t like about re2 remake is just the lack of challenge, there is very few zombies in the RPD compared to original re2. It’s always 2 zombies for each room and the majority of the time it’s one awake and one sleeping. You can also kill everything and still have a item box full of ammo, it’s way too easy compared to the original
6:20 - Umm, this isn't actually true at all. When zombies die, they're dead. The only time enemies will 'appear' in a room again is when they're literally scripted to appear. And in those situations, you don't even have to kill the original enemies in the room. For instance, the basement is initially populated by dogs, but after you complete a certain puzzle, there will be lickers there instead. And I think that only happens two more times in the game (in the Lab). Other than that, there are no surprises. It's not really something that you need to worry about.
You never disappoint, J. Great review! I'd love to see your thoughts on RE Darkside Chronicles, it's a Wii game heavily focusing on Leon and Claire. They retell the events of RE2, code Veronica, and a sorta prequel to RE4 overall. Give it a look sometime
I always felt that the RE2 ending for Darkside Chronicles was darker and made way more sense than the cheesiness of the remake's ending. Sherry's heart broken and it's implied that Leon's forced to serve the government.
This is a good video and I'll definitely check out more of your stuff. RE2 OG was absolute groundbreaking game when it game out, it completely flipped the way I thought about games and was one of the first PS1 games I played. For me it will *always* be not only the best version of the game but my personal favourite RE game. The fact that RE2 remake was as good as it was really surprised me. It's very well designed for a new audience and it sent my nostalgia for the original off the scales.
Original re2 is way better when I played the remake it felt like alot of things where missing and lacking clairs section was pretty much the same with leons except for the ada and sherry segment it felt like I was playing the same section all over again what a joke
Bruh, i still prefer the original dialogues than the remake. Also saying annette is much more human than the original is just absurd. The original version was more human and acted way more like a mother compared to the remake. Annette in the remake was so detached.
20:30 they actually do mention it in the remake. You find a report that says the host needs a nearly identical or blood relative host to pass on the virus.
RE2 original came out when I was 12. I still play it a couple times a year. The GameCube version with the HD Mod is my absolute favorite version. The Dreamcast port has an exclusive Nightmare difficulty mode, and the SourceNext PC port has a lot of mods out there for it. As much as I like RE2 remake, the original is still my favorite game of all time.
It’s so true that people that played the remake first then the original will always pick the remake. I think the remake was so disappointing. The missing enemies. Claire flirting with Leon yuck. and no decent scenario b.
WAY back in 1997 I was laid up for 2 weeks with a broken foot. RE2 on the PS1 was the only thing that kept me entertained long enough for me to forget about the pain in my foot. :-)
I’ve played the remake and it’s so good, Resident evil 2 is such a fantastic game. I need to play the original on my ps1 as I can’t wait to play it one day
This is a personal opinion but I find the remake better than the original, and I almost never say that about remakes. The original isn't a pushover though, it's still my favorite in the whole franchise.
Re2 remake is great. But the og is better. Original soundtrack(even though you can listen to og soundtrack in remake). More places to explore that leads to primary areas. Character interactions. The zapping system to this day, has yet to be matched. The cohesive storylines between Claire and Leon/Leon and Claire makes this game remarkably replayable. Re2 remake needed to remain in the oven longer.
@@guitarspud1723 the zapping system was poorly utilized idk what game you played, there aren’t really more areas when you take into account the added areas in remake, and the character interactions between Leon and Claire were stupid, realistically it’s dumb for them to split up In a survival situation of that nature, in the remake they never really give them the chance so it makes sense. The A/B thing the original did better, but not by much.
I love how Leon ended the original on "It's up to us to take down Umbrella" and in RE4 it says their stock prices dropped and killed the corporation. "Who took down Umbrella?" "*Leon Mumbles*" "What's that Leon?" "Capitalism..."
Having played RE2 when it came out, I was really looking forward to the remake, though I found myself very disappointed with it. I feel somewhat validated in that you touched upon most o the criticisms I had of it which most people seemed to have overlooked in the hype surrounding it at release. It does make a lot of sense that the A/B scenarios were crammed in at the last minute, which explains why Mr X was in both scenarios. I was surprised when he turned up in the A scenario which I initially thought was great and I assumed they'd have something new in the B scenario to mix things up further, so that was a huge let-down. That and the complete disconnection between the A/B runs where there was no choices you made that effected the second run. While I enjoyed RE2make as a fun game, I thought it was a terrible remake, which is a real shame. Clunky though the original is, it remains my favourite of the two versions.
As someone who's never played the original RE1-3, I love hearing from fans who love the game say RE1 remake was great (because I loved it) and that they really enjoyed RE2 remake, even if they prefer the original. I am kinda bummed about RE3 remake because I felt it was too short, and it seems I'm missing out if I don't play the original. But I just beat RE4 for the first time and I'm excited to play the remake in the near future.
If you're just getting into horror games and don't mind older games you should check out parasite Eve and parasite Eve 2. Both on ps1 and both are different from one another gameplay wise but both really good. I guess you could argue they aren't like horror horror but I remember as a kid it scared me but in more recent years it's just a fun two games to play. Imo
I wish they took extra time for the REmake, to more closely match Scenario A & B. Mr X only being in B. Also I feeling they missed/cut some nice areas from the original. An extended opening section in the City would have been so nice...don't get me started of RE3 REmake 😂💀⚰️
The RE2 Remake is probably my favorite game ever and is the reason I'm an RE fan today! As awesome as the OG RE2 looks, I could just never get the hang of the camera and controls. Glad I could still become a fan.
@James Wickham bro you’re reaching lol I really don’t care what it’s considered I said what I said, you don’t like it keep your goofy comments to yourself lol
List of things I dislike about the Resident Evil 2 Remake: 1. The A and B Senarios Re screwed up. 2. New plot holes, 3. Removed enemies ( no Spiders,Crows giant moth etc) 4. The Super Tyrant like a generic monster as opposed to more creepier demonic look he had in the original Resident Evil 2 5. Birkins 4th form redesign is just disspoiniting.
Remake had incredible graphics, scenery, and gameplay, but it just felt... incomplete. The A/B system had corners cut, certain enemy types were removed, a couple weapons absent, some scenes scrapped, a few locations gone. Extreme Battle ditched too. They removed one of my favourite scenes with Leon meeting Claire in the Stars room. Their relationship was mostly expressed through letters which was lazy, imo. However I really liked the Orphanage, but they should have made it scarier.
Facts: Loading screens Fixed cameras Tank controls Regular loading outside of opening doors Door loads Pre-rendered backgrounds Poor voice acting These are things that make RE 2 outdated. From what I can tell, most people vying for the superiority of RE2 over RE2make point to the zapping system as the overall reason for why they feel this way. And yeah, Capcom were sitting on their d#'$ when they didn't add that to the remake. They did add the DLC which doesn't make up for the missing zapping system-the campaign in conjunction with these things does. There are certain games that are classic because they still hold up(Super Mario World), and others like the OG RE2, that just don't. Nostalgia is fine, but in a conversation about which game is better, you shouldn't be married to the idea that nostalgia should be included in the argument. I love the original, too. But it's like comparing a 1983 Civic to a 2003 Civic. You can enjoy both, but which one holds up better?
The music is cut, and it's a problem since it's a survival horror game. The G-mutant is missing as well (well I mean it's still present in the sewers but it's not introduced). The alligator had no reason to be there, spawned for no reason tbh. The characters are all re-written in a very hollow way. The zombies are too spongy. The licker is not properly introduced either which is a shame since it's a legendary monster in the RE universe. And 80% of the time you have to use your flashlight which is an issue as well... And in the remake, there are no contacts between Leon & Claire...
That music gave me goosebumps the first time I heard it in 1998 and still does to this day. The B scenario version is also moving and the way Leon says "I can't just leave you behind" always makes me tear up a little. RIP Paul Haddad.
2 very different games. The remake is missing a ton of content but the combat is very fun and the graphics are amazing. The original is one of my favorite games ever.
They strayed to far from the original lay out of the lab also leaving out the giant spiders what were they thinking. I'm still waiting for a proper remaster of RE2 that stays true to the original.
big thing i miss from the lab is the giant moth. Real missed opportunity to take that scene and make a really cool boss out of it. At least the gator was included at all even if they didn't make it more interesting.
Remake is a much rougher comparison when you compare it as a remake. However, it offers so much that OG doesn’t that it’s impossible for me to be too upset. It may lack proper B Scenarios, the zapping system and cohesion between Leon and Claire’s stories, but it retains (and improves) the inventory management, level design and “crit path” satisfaction, so in that sense it does feel like a faithful remake. It’s also actually scary, which is something I’m not sure the original game does a very good job at, even when viewing it through the lens of releasing way back in 1998. If I was forced to choose one, I’d pick the original because it’s so chill to play through and well paced, and it’s also the original so Remake wouldn’t even exist without it. But like, man it’s close. Both are in my top 25 favorite games.
For me, the Re2make is almost a perfect game. The things they left out were a bit unforgivable for me though, like the spiders and the factory/warehouse section. I'll never forget my first playthrough of the original in 1998, when you finally make it out of the sewers you ascend through the factory and warehouse portions which were only a few scenes but when you reach the surface, you get a brief break when the track "Marshalling Yards" plays and it still haunts me to this day. It gave a feeling of ghostly loneliness that I haven't experienced in a horror game since. It's a masterpiece and I'll always treasure it.
I played the remake first, and I much prefer the original, everything in the remake feels like it was designed to be much more frustrating just for the sake of it. So in the original the regular zombies usually take seven bullets, and five if you’re lucky, whereas in the remake they all take anywhere from one to seven shots to the face, sometimes more! I hated the alligator bit in the remake, I hated the sewer bit full stop, I hated played as Sherry, I hate how if you don’t have a defence item you can’t shake off enemies where they’ll bite you once instead of three or four times, the shotgun even when upgraded is pathetic in the remake, the non-upgraded shotgun in the original is much more useful. I hate Mr.X in the remake, he’s really not much of a threat but more like a moving roadblock, and you know what’s stupid and just unfair? So he’s on the other side of that massive police station, if you fire a gun, ok that makes sense that he’ll know where you are, but if you start running even if you’re really far away from him he’ll know where you are and start making his way towards you, probably to trap you in a safe room and then he just won’t piss off. And then to top it all off the remake does one of my most hated video game pet peeves, which nowadays every developer thinks is a good idea, the movement speed is painfully slow, like Jesus Christ, I can run faster than that, it’s so slow avoiding just the basic zombies is way more trouble than it has any right to be, say what you want about tank controls and fixed camera angels but you can actually run in those old resident evil games.
The remake was cool but not as good as the original RE2. Remake left out the extreme battle mode which would of let us play more as Leon, Claire, Ada, and even Chris from RE1. Would of loved that mode being kept in instead of the stupid ghost survivor crap lol. Also this is coming from a day one fan since 1996 but I would of loved a fixed camera angle mode like the original for us old fans that loved that but I understand why they used the same kind of gameplay that 99% of games uses these days to appeal to new fans
One other point of comparison, however minor or major one considers it to be: the music in the original RE2 is FAR FAR superior to the music in the remake. The original's soundtrack is quite an iconic one and truly set the mood of every single level of the game, whereas the remake's were largely forgettable.
Honestly I get that decision. Mercenaries mode was done to death. RE3, RE4, RE5, Mercenaries 3D, RE6. It had it's run, and Capcom wants to try something new. That said, they should probably remaster or remake the Outbreak games if they hope to save the franchise at this point.
@@CommanderRedEXE no way those are the funnest modes especially mercenaries no mercy in 5&6 co op. Leaving it out of the game that started was just wrong. Would of been awesome playing as Nicolai, Mikhail and more Carlos in the remake
@@rickylewis1451 But it wouldn't have been faithful to the first version of Mercenaries. It likely would have been a half assed version, given the game itself was half assed in the first place. A remaster of Mercenaries 3D but with RE6 mercenaries mechanics would be the smartest option for anything Mercenaries in the future. Especially if they brought back ALL the playable characters from every game's story, instead of the usual 6 costumes for each character as roster filler.
@@CommanderRedEXE yes that's what I've been wanting forever lol all characters all levels it would probably be all I played anymore. I still play re6 mercs no mercy everyday with my son and some friends online.
@@rickylewis1451 I enjoyed mercenaries, but I just can't see them topping what they did in 6 without putting in actual effort to make maps based on all games, let alone all the characters. Something I just don't see Capcom having the ability to do anymore. If we're lucky RE4make will have a remastered version of it's meecenaries, but I somehow don't see that happening, with RE:VERSE still being worked on.
I feel like both remakes (2 and 3) has its pros and cons. I love REmake 2, but at the same time I wish they would've done it a bit differently. Scenarios A and B could be more different between each other. I was confused as to why we have to do the same boss fight at the same place as Scenario A and having Annette dying in two different places even though we were playing Scenario B. And i wish Leon and Claire would've interact more.
Yeah that's the problem, you played the remake first and THEN compared it to the original, most people who played the original first said otherwise, re2 remake is flawed, disappointing b scenario and no difference at all from switching scenarios, little to no interaction between Leon and Claire, cut content and rushed bosses, and ben was half assed, yeah Mr x is better and final boss was good but it really doesn't make up for the thing it lost from the original, you compare the original to the copy, not the copy to the original
The problem with these new remakes to much cut content especially that horrible RE3 remake than you look at the original remake RE1 which is a masterpiece because noting was cut instead added upon a original game how it should be.
I agree for the most part. I've been with RE since the very beginning, but I feel a lot of long time fans look back on RE2 with nostalgia goggles. It's a great game and certainly a more complete package, but it has aged. The remake certainly has it's issues, but in terms of gameplay it's just such a better feeling game to play. Each game has it's pros and cons and as you point out the remake did improve some things such as character development for certain characters. In the remake Annette was much better, but Ada was much worse. The presentation was better, but the story discrepancies were very noticeable between the two scenarios. They're both great games and I love them both, but for varying reasons.
15:29 funfact: The editor of that magazine was Rich Leadbetter who you may now know as the head honcho at Digital Foundry. I still have most copies of the UK Sega Saturn magazine somewhere including that issue.
The original is the best one, the remake is an inferior product, it's good but it could've been a lot better. It's a shame really, a lot of concept art showed they really had cool ideas even taking inspiration from RE 1.5 I have a lot of problems with the remake but I can just turn a blind eye, however the Ada/Sherry segments I just can't ignore, they completely ruin the game for me, I dread going through those parts I simply refuse to play the game again. I wish those parts became optional to play once you beat them once, also the alligator scene is a terrible addition I feel like I'm playing Crash Bandicoot.
Andrew Cruz: they're both great I like these videos not also compare but we can see how game came so far as develop for over 20 years that's interesting
S-Ranked RE 2 when I was a kid and S-Ranked RE 2 Remake in my middle-ages, you never grow old as a man I guess lol...both titles got really great and belong to my favorites of this legendary series
The main problem I have with the remake is the lack of Proper B scenarios and cut content
Shorter game play and less enteraction between Leon and Claire in the RE 2 Remake. I wish they would make the remake to match the original.
@@SushiFanatic Yeah but at least it’s not as bad as remake 3 in terms of cut content lol 😂
@@marcusmoore4819 going by the re3 remake I can only assume re4 is gonna be an hour long
100% True
remake is inferior
Remake removes enemies and certain areas. It's supposed to include everything the original has and add stuff to it, not swap shit around and re-imagined shit. That's why it's an inferior version for the modern gamers.
@@carlosaponte2349 Hahaha, RE3 Remake, I played that fucking shit once. That game is on train tracks.
Also, RIP the original VA for Leon in RE2, Paul Haddad. Still love your "ADA WAIT!!!!"

"his", not "your". He is not going to read your emotional comments.
I would have preferred one fantastic RE2 remake as opposed to having both a great RE2 remake and a mediocre RE3 remake.
re3 was shit remake, not mediocre...

@@DexterMullen It wasn't that bad. I get that you're passionate about the series but that's really an exaggeration.

Great video keep it up !
Remakes NEVER replace the original. The original RE has hilarious lines and cuts cutscenes and there's no replacing it
Because remake for 1 has everything the original has and is expanded upon.

I never speedrun games but man resident evil 2 is so much fun to speedrun. I have the entire game memorized.

I love in the original Resident Evil 2 there's the A and B scenarios. It increase the replayability.
I did it with RE1 Remake on the switch as while I don't murderously hate RE0, it like Code Veronica was a one time playthrough back on the Wii/PS3 respectfully and I have no interest in replaying them ever again! hence I'd rather pay less for RE1 Remake ONLY!)
RE 2 is considered the best of the series as far as I'm concern with RE4 being a close second (enjoyed it and enjoyed the changes, alongside it being what got me INTO the series in general as I was a scardy cat for Horror growing up and RE was no different when my dad bought RE1 Original on the 3DO...tried it once then never got past the First Zombie with Jill cause I wussed out after that cutscene, and as Chris, I ran around like an idiot not knowing what I was doing and quit when I ran into Rebecca in the chemical Save Room because I lost my heart again!
My second attempt was only victory and BARELY because I started out with Magnum rounds first before the gatling gun and almost thought I was going to see another game over when the cutscene played)
Of course in a way this likely attributed to why they REALLY got lazy and Content Cutting with RE3 Remake (An Okay Game, but if your like me and got it on day 1 overhyping yourself, well it took me TWO YEARS after beating it the first time to go back to it on Hardcore and Nightmare because I had a sense of fun....but my disappointment with what was cut out since I played Original RE3 made me feel listless playing RE3 Remake that any good fun was usually ignored for that disappointment!

But did you get hunk and tofu.
@@cidfacetious3722 hunk yes, but not tofu yet
Do you think it's just nostalgia bias? I've watched playthroughs of re2 but never played it.
@@ashharkausar413 no it’s a great game. If you like the og survival horror style. If not then it won’t change your mind
@Good Hunter So you prefer it because it's more challenging. ...OK?
I've noticed most remakes focus on production rather than creative potential. It is what gets the masses hyped, so I suppose it's a better business plan.
Not saying remakes aren't good, they just aren't near the quality of their predecessors (in terms of creative direction/feeling like more complete games).
@Good Hunter You haven't played nightmare mode, have you?
@@megyskermike RE1's remake is probably the only exception to that rule tbh. Which is sad, because RE1's remake is way better than the original.
RE1.5 is actually really interesting with the many things the remake brought back after being cut from the PS1 version. It's not that fun to play, but it's interesting if you played 2 Remake beforehand, it's neat.
I still yearn for an RE2 remake that's like the RE1 remake.
Bro this game is part of my life and my best friends too. Means a lot. Beat it sooo many times. I unlock all of it. Hunk , tofu, mercenaries
And the voice acting...
I do prefer the original mainly because of the b scenarios and Leon and Claire interact more
The remake has a better level design, it’s your opinion but I highly disagree.
Another thing that's BS is that Leon doesn't meet Sherry until the very end on the train.
Had to get my PS1 chipped back in 1998 so I could play this game. Me and friends were blown away by the intro.
A and B scenarios differences of the original is so much better...
I think the item randomizer is new in this one.
It does include the EX files, though, which are extra lore-related files that don't exist in any of the other versions.
The Extreme Battle mode was not in the original PS1 release. I think the N64 version is based on the PS1 original.

I love RE2, I first played it on the GameCube and loved it so much. The remake is so good, but I admit, I have never finished the remake.
The gamecube version is like gold. Keep it secret, keep it safe.
Another common W for J's Reviews 👏 Thank you for providing us with new content

The A B scenarios was called the Zapping system. It fascinated me and I am confused why this system isn't in the remake or other titles.
Its a remake not a remaster.
@@themanguycastshow2397 I called it a remake and being remake doesnt exclude it from criticism due to removal of systems.
Laziness
@@themanguycastshow2397 You can't deny that the lack of zapping and meaningfully different, plot consistent A B scenarios was corner cutting. They still tried slipping the latter into the game it was just not even close to being complete because of time/budget constraints.
But yeah i mean, it does a lot of great things and i can excuse some things getting lost in transition.
@@moreisallyouneed4175 A/B scenarios and zapping system are two different things. Zapping system is doing something in the A scenario that affects the B scenario like leaving either the sub machine gun or side pack for the B character in the weapon storage room.

that was a comprehensive overview, bro! stellar content
I really liked the zapping system in RE2 PS1. It's unfortunate that the remake didn't recreate the zapping system properly.
@@FoxsDumbSeriesMaker Exactly, I like it a lot because of that. It makes Leon's character way more interesting

Thank you Shinji Mikami for making such a great franchise.
Cant forget Hideki Kamiya.
20:30 they actually do mention it in the remake. You find a report that says the host needs a nearly identical or blood relative host to pass on the virus.
Original is always the best hands down!

@@guitarspud1723 The zapping for OG RE2 was perfection. It's one of a few reasons why I prefer the OG too :)
The PlayStation's RE, RE2, and RE3 remain one of video games' best trilogies.

"Who took down Umbrella?"
"*Leon Mumbles*"
"What's that Leon?"
"Capitalism..."

Resident Evil 2 (1998) was my first step into the survival horror genre and I've loved it ever since
List of things I dislike about the Resident Evil 2 Remake:
1. The A and B Senarios Re screwed up.
2. New plot holes,
3. Removed enemies ( no Spiders,Crows giant moth etc)
4. The Super Tyrant like a generic monster as opposed to more creepier demonic look he had in the original Resident Evil 2
5. Birkins 4th form redesign is just disspoiniting.
Thumbing this up already cause I already know this video is fire 🔥🔥🔥
Remake had incredible graphics, scenery, and gameplay, but it just felt... incomplete. The A/B system had corners cut, certain enemy types were removed, a couple weapons absent, some scenes scrapped, a few locations gone. Extreme Battle ditched too. They removed one of my favourite scenes with Leon meeting Claire in the Stars room. Their relationship was mostly expressed through letters which was lazy, imo. However I really liked the Orphanage, but they should have made it scarier.
Facts:
Loading screens
Fixed cameras
Tank controls
Regular loading outside of opening doors
Door loads
Pre-rendered backgrounds
Poor voice acting
These are things that make RE 2 outdated.
Ada's "Death" was MUCH better in the original with the music playing.

Not to mention that Claire & Leon, only spoke to each other 2 times throughout the whole game. Lol
Dude for real! I mean, do we really need a side story for Robert Kendo for RE2R?!
Woulda been nice if they got all of the main plots correct.
big thing i miss from the lab is the giant moth.
RE 2: Remake is a fucking marvel, dude. Love it.
What music, in the remake, we got nothing? We actually HAD TO PAY to have the OG OST included...
The original RE3 is light years better than the lackluster remake. Leaving out mercenaries mode alone was a crime
Missed a lot of iconic dialogues from the original though
I’m always so shocked how quickly you put out videos.
Alright I'm sold. Up till know I had only played RE4, going to give this franchise another try thanks to you J!
The problem with these new remakes to much cut content especially that horrible RE3 remake than you look at the original remake RE1 which is a masterpiece because noting was cut instead added upon a original game how it should be.
nice one. good to hear from someone first experiencing the old games for the first time and comparing the remakes. look forward to nemesis
It's a shame really, a lot of concept art showed they really had cool ideas even taking inspiration from RE 1.5
I have a lot of problems with the remake but I can just turn a blind eye, however the Ada/Sherry segments I just can't ignore, they completely ruin the game for me, I dread going through those parts I simply refuse to play the game again. I wish those parts became optional to play once you beat them once, also the alligator scene is a terrible addition I feel like I'm playing Crash Bandicoot.
I remember how many hours I spent playing RE2. It is a classic!
They’re both great ! I don’t know why there has to be a battle between them .
RE2 remake got many things right, but it didn't surpass the original like REmake did.
Original Re2 is my childhood I love the game soooo much
