My friend said 'mansions and zombies doesn't seem that scary' and I was okay, but what makes re scary is looking at your map and seeing all the rooms you gotta move thru and knowing there's 4 zombies on the way and you only have 1 healing item and 20 ammo. The tense atmosphere definitely doesn't help either. The horror in re largely comes from the gameplay, not just set dressing. Re is amazing
Heres the problem, 99.9% of players just run past those zombies. Most of the reasons people cite the old games as being so ZOMG amazing, they themself never use and just run around
RE2 Remake is my personal game of the decade, and getting S+ on hardcore with both Leon and Claire is the hardest gaming achievement I’ve ever gotten and it’s so gratifying.
There's a lot of things wrong with this game that the original did better like storytelling, writing, and the A/B scenarios. Graphically wise the remake still holds up however
@@tjhicks3600 lol agreed, the reviews at the time were accurate about B scenario being lazy af. IGN catered like some pussies with the review score change. However overall still a damn great scary game
@@tjhicks3600 Yeah no. RE2 Remake is miles netter than the original. Most of you were little ass kids when re2 released so all you have is nostalgia. News flash casuals, re 2 og has aged HORRIBLY
The A and B scenario RE2R don't tie to each other. Apparently Capcom was only going to make one campaign for Leon and Claire and made the [2nd run] due to fan demand. That means that every story happens independently of each other. That's why you see Mr.X die on Claire's campaign and he is still alive on Leon's, why Annette is all over the place and why you always fight the same bosses.
I always knew that Capcom rushed to fit as much of the second scenarios in as they could, but I always thought that Mr. X coming back was demonstrating his super healing.
@@godofirrelevant Even if it was Super Regeneration, part of the coat got completely torn apart. Meaning his mutations would start acting up, as show in Leon's campaign.
@@mn9137 You do present a good point. But, then again, at the end Leon’s campaigns, Mr. X’s entire top portion of his trench coat limiter is off (aside from one of the gloves) and only his right arm was mutated, with the exceptions of his exposed heart and missing jaw.
But Claire's and leons campaigns working independently does not work at all for a game like that which should be freaking obvious... According to the resident evil lore BOTH characters games have to happen because both of them have their own subplots, secondary characters and events which are indispensable for the story about what happened in racoon city. Im asking you: How can this be achieved if leons and Claires are conflicting alternate timelines instead of complementing sides of one and the same story? The fact that only that few people seem to realize how much of a problem we got here is just beyond me...
I prefer playing the original, but even there it was very out of place, there is no file explaining or even mentioning the Alligator, he just randomly appears and that's it.
7:10 - The original RE2 had different scenarios that actually affected the other and that tied into one another. If the Remake loses any points, it's with its nonsensical scenario connections. 8:45 - You can definitely die here. Rather quickly too.
@@hubertgizinski7962 I pretty much agree. It feels like they tried to save money or development time here. I hate to say it with such a well crafted game, but it feels like a cut corner.
@@mrpussinboots4252 I'm not sure what you're referring to. From my understanding the RE1 Remake was basically drastically improved over the first game in every possible way, including adding to the scenarios. I can't recall a ton being stripped like with the RE2 Remake.
@@BelartWright Im referring to strictly storyline wise. Re2remake followed the same formula used for the re1remake regarding characters and scenarios. As in re1remake both Jill's and Chris's campaigns over lap one and other and you're practically doing the same thing for each, its left upto the player to determine which one he perceives as canon or not. So when you run through as leon or claire, that run through is canon for the duration.
RE2 remake was my first RE, and let me say, it was amazing. Sure the sewer and lab sections on multiple runs were kinda boring but the police station alone makes this game amazing and mr x chasing you was one of the most terrifying things I’ve experienced in a video game.
@Trevor White yeah, you have to pray that he doesn’t come in the room that your in. Weirdly enough if he corners you and punches you, you can dodge roll out of the corner and start running, so it’s not all over.
@@cmwaves The remake cut content the original have. And each character had a different arc depending on which side you were playing. In Claire A Cherry gets infected by her father, in Claire B Cherry doesn't get infected because the events that lead to it happened in Leon A, since Cherry wasn't with Leon she misses her father and nothing happens. It was very cool to play the same game 4 times and getting a different outcome every playthrough.
@@andregon4366 yeah, that sucks that they didn’t put it in there. If I had to guess a reason why they removed it, it would probably be to make the two campaigns, More streamlined in the timeline
My theory about the disconnected story is that originally they said that there wasn't going to be A and B scenario. Then fans threw a fit and they quickly put in those scenarios. I would rather have a pair of scenarios that have a very connected story then four scenarios that really made no sense story wised.
On account of the A/B scenarios: they were definitely scuffed here, there isn’t an explanation for the plot holes. In the OG, it was a lot more separated, and it feels like they were trying to intertwine more which I think hurts the appeal
I’ve been a massive fan of Resident Evil ever since I played RE1’s remake in 2014, and I’m really glad you enjoyed this game so much! I’d be very eager to see you do a retrospective of the entire series!
Leon's and Claire's campaigns are parallel universes basically, that's why they both have to fight the same bosses, solve the same puzzles, go through the same places without meeting etc. But I think that 2nd run should have been more than what it is. It should have tied with the normal run. The only big change is the beginning in the RPD.
Honestly there really isn’t an explanation for how Annette can be at two places when she clearly dies in one. I heard this once but I don’t know if it’s true so take it with a grain of salt. Originally Capcom was just going to do the canon story for re2make (Claire A Leon B) but fans wanted it so badly after seeing the e3 trailer that capcom decided to do it. But by that time there wasn’t time to polish it and that’s why there’s a lot of confusion since it’s possible that Annette would only be seen dieing in Claire route and Leon would just meet her but thanks to the A and B scenario set up it gets muddled up.
I think you're right. I just say that each character's scenario represents another alternative history of what occurred. You can choose the one you prefer. There is no way to come to one story by going through multiple ones, so it's not worth it. Just focus on your favorite. It would be cool if they would go back and give us the full treatment, and also go back through RE3 Remake and give us the clock tower and more base Nemesis (without weapons or transformations).
Nah, that still doesn't work because Leon B wouldn't work with Claire A still. Unless they were going to actually do something different with the B scenerio, then it doesnt matter who goes first because it wouldn't go together either way
My guess on the Annette situation is she faked her death to get Sherry to leave with Claire so she can get back ling enough to shoot Ada but I could be wrong.
It wasn't quite like that. They were just going to do a Leon A and Claire A scenario because that's what most people only remember from the original. The mainstream audience never knew about the B-scenario and thought RE2 was just like RE1 when it came to the character choice so that's what Capcom aimed for. Surprise surprise, the actual fanbase for RE which is huge asked a lot of questions about that after announcement so they rushed the 2nd runs, clearly without any time or budget for new mocap or cutscenes
The issue surrounding fighting William Birkin every time and Anette is one of the things the remake really dropped the ball on. The original had two completely different stories for A and B for each character and changed which bosses they fought so there was no real overlap in terms of boss fights and story beats
@@casdomdomcas5214 Many people care about lore. It shows developers care about the game in every stage of development. Just because a lot of people "don't play a game for the story" doesn't mean others dislike the stories. Those that care about lore go deep. Whether the universe is serious or light hearted, you should treat your lore with consistency and attention. And no matter how glitchy or outdated the games are, the story lasts a lot longer in time. There's a reason Superman is still prevalent after so many decades. Humanity likes its stories. So don't brush it off.
The events of the 4 scenarios are developed when the trucker bites into his cheeseburger, the laughter from the joke about his wife reverberates through the beef and shuffles the dimensions. Duh.
Picked this game up for my dad two Christmases ago, he played the originals on ps1 and I have to say, he's still playing them two years on, finally got around to hunks playthrough!
The inconsistencies between the A and B plots are likely due to them trying to work with that concept in the remake. Ultimately it was scrapped due to time constraints but they likely kept a lot of the story beats and scenes. We get pieces of what these A and B scenarios might have looked like but can be confusing as a result.
They shouldve just taken more time this is the main reason the game lost alot of points from my side the game was ok at best some ppl be overhyping stuff if i see a game where the developers actually take their time and make the best version of that game or at least try then yeh you can overhype a game but re2 remake was lazy with not getting the A and B scenario right but at least the game was not as bad as re3 remake but that was not hard to accomplish re3 remake is a disgrace from capcom literally a cashgrab
@@alexmaganda5827 They also have been mentions of this remake for years. I would be curious to hear more about the development cycle of the game. They scrapped the original design of resident evil 2 but managed to push out the original as we know it but of course game design requires much more people in today’s environment then it did in the past
I just can't help but... really dislike how the Leon's and Clare's story directly contradict each other at a lot of points. I'm a person who really cares about canon. I just can't help it.
@@splash_067 Exactly. So many have said the remake is Leon a/Claire b but if they saw the actual continuity, Claire got the cure for Sherry moments before Leon go the g virus sample. But they say Leon got there first without explaining how he opened the cabinet without using the locket Claire had in her possession or why Ada had to use her gadget to hack the nest elevator when Claire and Sherry had the lab chip to activate it. This is why I prefer the original because it's more straight forward than misleads the remake. I like the remake but yate the confusion.
9:10 no actually backwards. Thats exactly how the original RE2 is. You don't fight the last Birkin stage and get the real ending until you beat B scenario.

It's not amazing the slightest lmao. Only fake Re fans and normies with dogshit game taste thinks the remakes are good. The original RE2,RE3 remain superior and the most iconic survival horror game in history.

@@hajinka98_ "fake re fans" dude I was saying that same kind of bullshit when re4 came out (was "raised" on the classics). Get off your high horse. Also RE2m and RE3m were made by different companies. RE2 was Capcom, RE3 was m2.
I can't like RE2R over the OG or hell, even fucking Veronica due to hardcore RNG bs with magnet hands, bullet stun, and Mr. X blatantly teleporting onto a staircase I was descending in an S rank run. No consistency with the game at high level play, which at a casual level does make for good horror, but of course not at all fun when you wanna get down and be more calculative.
Gameplay wise, resi 2 remake is one of the best out there. But the scenarios are just so poorly implemented it ruins the story. In development capcom were intending to give Leon and Claire their own respective scenarios, no zapping system or A/B scenarios, for the first time effectively giving Leon and Claire their definitive stories during the events of the racoon city outbreak. However fan outcry demanded the A/B scenario be returned, and so the final product was a bodge job of an A/B system was renamed 1st scenario/2nd scenario.
Yeah...thats not what happened. What we got with RE2 Remake's Claire and Leon 1st run is all Capcom was going to do in the first place. They planned to do what they did with RE1 and just have a Jill and Chris campaign that don't connect. The fan outcry caused them to shift the full ending over to a 2nd run(of the character you didnt play first). This is why the only major changes in the 2nd run are mainly in the RPD; they ran out of time. The 2nd runs are just a half assed attempt to make ammends for their colossal game design fuck up, that made zero sense in the first place. If they only wanted 2 scenarios, they should have just had a Claire and Leon campaign that connected.
This is exactly why RE2R is far from being a masterpiece. They botched and completely removed two of the original game's top selling points which were the A/B scenarios and the zapping system. They should have valued and respected these mechanics more and greatly expanded on them. Sadly they decided to throw all their eggs in one basket with visuals, gameplay and motion capturing.
@@Atlier it's been a while since I've seen this reply. after doing a bit of searching, yeah there was never a canon Leon and claire scenario in the works (even though it would of been the most straightforward option) it was just fan rumour that got escalated which I got caught up in. but yes like you said, it was going to be an even worse re1 style playthrough and fan outcry caused them messily implemented 2nd runs.

@@pereztube2 Oh believe me, I'm on the same boat as you! But if youre deep in the Zelda fandom, you can clearly see how divisive those guys can get. Quick story: I play every game on hard mode. Theres a part in the game where you enter a safe room and receive ink ribbons to save right? It gave me 5 of them. I was in a great flow, which is why I didn't save for a great amount of time. Guess what? Ps4 pro error on my 45 minute run. I was annoyed but determined to finish the game. I enter the EXACT same safe room I received the 5 ink ribbions. Guess again? The items were a green herb. That honestly cost me not finishing the game, I totally whiffed my rerun and wasted a lot of resourcrs that I just never made up for on the 1st run. To this day I cant beat mr x because I legit do not have the ammo go defeat him or the health to heal. Just wanted to vent about the most frustrating experience I had with a great game. 😁
RE2make was my personal GOTY for 2019. From my first impression, they nailed the majority of what I wanted the remake to be from its atmosphere, puzzles, exploration and overall challenge because, in my opinion, remake has more challenging gameplay design compared to the original, but even as a remake, it also feels somewhat of a missed opportunity. It left me baffled by how badly scenarios interconnect with each other and they completely dropped out the zapping system. The original intent from the developers was for it to have one consistent campaign for each character and it really shows. They probably added the B scenario at the 11th hour. Maybe that's why it felt so rushed. It also left me disappointed with the enemy variety since a good few of them were cut out from the original with a huge moth, spider enemies, crows and even evolved lickers were dropped out. I can live without crows, but when they decided to cut out some enemies, they could have compensated with some newer ones at least. G Type Adult isn't it since he was one of the bosses in the original. They just slightly changed the design and added more of them. Ivy isn't it either. It's pretty much Plant 42 with a different more humanoid design. Alligator also feels like a rushed and poor design desicion. Originally through development, Alligator part was supposed to be longer and stretched out where it follows you in several rooms like a predator and you were the prey and you were supposed to have more agency to fight it and they probably wanted to drop it out completely because they couldn't find the ways to make it work for some reason but probably because of the fan backlash they had to find the compromise to put it in the game and went with the janky scripted Crash Bandicoot level. I like that they added the Gator in the game, he was in the original after all, but it does feel poorly thought out and doesn't belong in the game due to its different design philosophy. RE2 remake barely has moments when it slows down or feels needlessly scripted and I was only able to find very few short walking sections that barely hinder the gameplay and having something like the scripted Alligator sections feels kind of jarring in comparison. Alligator fight felt more consistent in the original game. Originally, they had some cool ideasin terms of enemy designs, some concept designs look even frightening and fucked up, there was even an idea where a zombie eventually transforms into a licker similar to Crimson Heads which looks cool but the game itself is already challenging enough as it is so I can see why they dropped the idea completely. Love the game, but I honestly wanted something more out of it. It might have been better if developers didn't take the middle ground route in appealing to fans and doing their own thing and picked one or the other. It lacks the organic scenario progression from the original and how they play out it left me frowning my eyebrows. RE3make at least went for something a bit different even though it's lacking a bit compared to the original game and I commend the bolder move of trying to do something fresh with a remake and not just do a copy/paste job with better graphics. Maybe that's why Twin Snakes isn't my cup of tea because outside the insane over the top cinematics and MGS2 gameplay engine, it's still the same game with a different coat of paint and different music, but lacks the original atmosphere. I'm not really looking forward to a remake of RE4, since the game I've already played still holds up pretty well for what it was going for, but if they're going for a different experience, I'm down for that. Maybe they'll borrow something from an original concept design of RE4 and its Hook man demo. Overall, I still think RE2make is a stellar return to survivor horror and one of my favorite games of 8th console generation. I was just expecting they'd fix some of the issues with a DLC patch or something.
This game is truly an amazing time to be had on any playthrough. I recently did S+ rankings of Leon and Claire's A scenarios, and I was so satisfied with playing the game, and managing to get those ranks. Everything from the gameplay to the story just has me satisfied. Also, William G-5 CAN kill you. It happened to me when I did the B scenarios on Hardcore, one time each.
For a person with such high praise for it I was genuinely shocked when you said you hadn't played hardcore mode without the infinite ammo. Did that on my first play through which was absolutely amazing and we'll worth the difficulty.
this game was my first resident evil ever, I was late to the series but resident evil 2 remake is among my top 3 favorite games of all time, it’s perfect to me. an amazing blend of horror, tension, critical thinking, puzzle solving and action. so amazing.
Yeah, this game was brilliant, and exactly what I wanted from a “modern” Classic RE title. 7 wasn’t bad (I actually had a lot of fun with it and am looking forward to 8), but this one scratched an itch that one couldn’t for me.
It has a lot of replay value even if it’s missing a lot of original content from the PS one game. Especially if you master the game to the point that you get the infinite weapons.
As a longtime Resident Evil fanatic, it will be interesting to see how a newcomer reacts to the series for the first time. The originals may have "outdated" mechanics like tank controls and fixed camera angles, but they remain some of my favorite games of all time.
@@darrensucksatgames i mean, if you want an easy game you should play some nintendo stuff. tank controls aren't really that hard. up is always the direction you face
I memory tricked me into thinking ti was subpar but it is actually my favorite bow and I have recently put 62 hours into re1. Played re4 7 and village. I like how this takes you out of your comfort zone. In re1 you were in control even un real survival you always had the upper hand and it got boring. Re2 you are always scavenging resources. Every little thing. I love looking on the map like where should I go next. Also this is so tense. Re games never really scared me, even 7 and dollhouse in 8 didnt scare me too much but the lighting in this makes it amazing. How you are just in the dark hallways limited ammo wandering aggresive zombies, gore when you try to shoot one. The horror is all there and this is dwifdebtly most horrfiyng in the series. Also who could forget the story. Amazing story that expanded upon the original in 1998 and now expands on 1998 in 2019. This is perfect. Even the best re players will be scaveneign for supplies using strategies and pissing their pants. Loving it. Always thought this was mediocre in the back of my mind from when I played it but now I see I was just playing other re games and I thoguht this paled to that but this is my new favorite in the series
Also, like, I just really like how mechanically diverse RE4 is compared to RE2make. The blind gonnados enemies with the claws are some of the most mechanically awesome enemies in the entire game. Making it so that they're close up attacks are devastating meaning you'll want to stay away, but you can't run or else you'll alert them, and then placing the weak spots on its back. Then there's the regenerators which can go down if you pump enough bullets into them, but will go down far easier with the thermal scope. Or how your knife can deflect thrown objects in mid air, or how you can shoot explosives right in an enemy's hand. I just feel like RE4 has more mechanical depth than RE2make. Sorry. I just felt like most enemies in RE2make were just... tanks. With very little depth in them.
@@TehPiemaygor Well, they're zombies. They've always been like that in Resident Evil, because they're undead? RE2make, unlike RE4, is an actual survival horror game. It's about the struggle to fight them, hence why they are so resistant. Fair enough if you disagree, but you can't compare it to RE4 when it's designed to be different on purpose.
@@TehPiemaygor Lolno. RE2 is an actual survival horror game. You know, like it's suppose to be? RE4 is a Goddamn cheesefest. So you can miss me with that idiotic opinion of yours.
Definitely do a retrospective of the series, that would be very interesting for me to see as a fan of the series for the past two decades. I've only ever heard takes on the series from longtime fans of it rather than somebody who is relatively new to it
It would drive you insane cause all the new fans have not play ANY of the originals due to the tank controls, lengthy story, or its difficulty even on normal.
The explanation is the character you're playing is the main character. It shows you what would happen if they were the main character. That's really it.
I wish Sly would get a modern remake that was on all platforms, what an amazing franchise that was not only super unique but extremely fun and memorable. Also pop the zombies in the head and run away or get a really food pc and crank dat fps to 300 and kill everything with the knife but then it breaks in like 2 seconds but you find plenty of them so it is not actually that bad... any who GREAT VIDEO :)
I do feel like while RE2make sometimes gets harsh criticisms from long time fans, at same time i feel some of the complaints are justified Like you mentioned, A/B scenerio lack much of needed difference to distinquish it from main game which leaves it as just **the videogame hard mode that includes the true final boss and ending*** which was confirmed later by the devs that A/B scenerios were last minute addition just so they can extend the games length which explains it's akward inclusion, there's also the fact that the boss fights feel overall on par with original (if not worse thanks to modern tech and more developed understanding of horror games) they're just walking tank who can be only damaged by hitting specific weakspots while having stuff turning movemet, (it's at it worst during Leon campaigns final boss with MR.X during the lift where you keep circling around while the area gets tighter until ada drops the RPG), I did feel like there was chance to improve for more interesting encounters such example such as Second form-berkin fight either leon or claire where you have to choices either hitting him twice with switch that knocks him over or finishing him manually with bullets. MR.X can be intimidating in first playthrough but after few encounters you discover that his A.I is easily exploitable with walking foward *he enters hit animation* walk back and then walk around him whole recovering, circling around him also seems effective, I even tend to worry more about the zombies and lickers then him becoming my least concern element which is bit upsetting since i liked him alot at first before studying him more, His music is amazing with steps ques added his track making it blend well with enviorment. Claire can be much harder for me to play at first thanks to her starter weapon being a revolver with 5 ammos per magazine and slow animation reload compared to leon's matilda faster loading and bigger magazine, tho there's flaw that you could upgrade leon's maltida pistol to 3-burst pistol and more steady him early the game after first berkin fight which makes him quite overpowered, specially when ammo for pistol and gunpowders are quite plentiful compared to shotguns or Mags. and on final note i felt both third weapons (Leon's Flamethrower and claire's electric shock were only useful during lab section against the mutated plant creatures since they only become burden in inventory eventually, In some playthroughs I skipped aquiring them and the only consenquence I met was having lower ammo during final section so i tend to skim over them tho i won't deny using electric shocker have some level of cool factor I hope this long list didn't give way that i ended up disliking the game quite the opposite I loved it and replayed multiple times, I only noticed these issues with reocurring playthroughs so it's quite plus for the game, I grasp that having same experiance or improved compared to the first playthrough is sometime impossible, and also avoided making too many comparsions with original since i feel like game is bit far removed from it to make too many comparsions without coming off unfair
I would rather have replayability rather than prententious A and B scenarios. Re 1 remake doesnt even have a real canon ending but they considered it a masterpiece. Lol prentetious asf
You dont even need to go back to dodge mr xs punch, if you know which arm hes swinging with you just go the opposite side, but yeah nerve wrecking on the first run and now a joke you barely even see on speedruns, scenario a for example as I go to get the crank for the library mr x is supposed to walk in yet I'm gone and in the library before he even sees me and most of the time you've moved the bookcases and up the ladder before hes even near you.
Uh. I actually liked Leon's loadout more. The shotgun istantkills zombies with point blank headshots, his handgun is much better and the magnum and the flamethrower melt bosses lifebar. As for Claire? Her handgun is much weaker and carries less ammo (at least her 1st run gun. The Quickdraw she gets on the 2nd run is great.), the Grenade Launcher is meh against zombies but is great for killing Lickers but you never really need to kill any Lickers in this game, the machine gun she gets is completely worthless and eats too much ammo for too low DPS (which is why i never bother picking it up), and the Spark Shot is nowhere near as good as the Flamethrower. And her "Hi-Power Rounds" are just a weaker version of Leon's Magnum! Only good thing about her loadout is that Acid Rounds can stunlock some bosses (mainly G2 and G3) Will you review RE3Remake as well? That game is super fun as well just not as good as RE2.
Those are all pretty fair points. I just *felt* more powerful against bosses and lickers as Claire than Leon, but the basic loadout is better against zombies. And yeah, RE3 will be a new video soon.
Jesus, you're so critical about Claire's loadout. Leon's shotgun does NOT always instant kill Zombie's with headshots, so you're wrong about that. Secondly, Claire's Grenade Launcher wrecks most enemies, and kills them in one hit. And i'm 99% sure that her ''high power rounds'' are as equally as strong to Leon's magnum bullets. So I don't know what the hell you're talking about.
@@SweetChildofMine-l5y Yes it is an instant kill 100% of the time, the thing is, if you have the base Shotgun the range you have to have with the zombie head is so close that sometimes you risk getting grabbed or missing the target. Once you get the upgrades for the Shotgun, the range increases dramatically so getting headshots becomes ten times easier. Claire Hi Power Rounds are not as good simply because Leon can upgrade his Magnum and make it much stronger, if you take the chance to backtrack to the RPD once you reach the sewers. If you compare it to Leon base magnum, then, yeah they are almost equal but still Claire's gun has got a worse reload time. The Grenade Launcher WORKS well against zombies, but it's not very practical. Simply because ammo for the Grenade Launcher is more scarce, while Shotgun ammo is super plentiful. So wasting Grenades on zombies is ill advised. Not to mention, if you waste all of your Flame Rounds on zombies, you will have a bad time in NEST. Mind you, i still enjoy playing as Claire, i just think Leon's loadout is more practical. Also i think Claire's scenarios are much easier than Leon's, even if her weapons are more situational.
@@SweetChildofMine-l5y No i'm correct, and you are getting awfully salty for me just expressing my opinion. I speedrun this game plenty of times, got all the trophies, and i know for a fact that Leon's Shotgun pops heads almost 100% of the time, if you are super close to a zombie. Also Leon's upgraded Magnum is stronger than Claire Hi Power Rounds, that is just a fact. I don't know why you got so angry. Chill dude.
Hardcore is how Re2Re was meant to be played. Subbed. Also, I’m a big fanboy. But I treat original and remake as two separate and amazing games. One adding to another, and not replacing.
According to Capcom, this game is a new entry to the series rather than just a remake. Leon Kennedy is 21 during the events of Resident Evil 2. This remake comes out 21 years (and 4 days) after the release of the original PS One Resident Evil 2. Was built from the ground up on the RE Engine, the same engine that was used for Resident Evil VII: Biohazard (2017). No ink ribbons are needed to save this game when it's played on an easy or a normal difficulty. However, on a higher difficulty, this item is required. Despite taking many liberties to differentiate itself from the original Resident Evil 2, the game has unlockable skins for Leon and Claire: in their original polygonal forms as seen in 1998. Enemies are able to chase the player from one room to another upon detection. There is an achievement in the game titled 'Master of Unlocking'. This is a reference to character Barry Burton's notorious line in the original Resident Evil (1996), which has become the subject of various memes and parodies since its release. Although physically absent the distant sound of crows can be heard when Leon and Ada go down the short alleyway that is right next to the door Kendo the gun shop owner and his daughter went into in the cutscene. The zombie alligator sequence was almost cut from the game, but the studio decided to leave it in due to its popularity among fans of the original. Introduces the red and blue herb combination, which not only cures poisoning, but also makes the player temporarily invulnerable to it. It will also increase the defense for a while. Except for the first build up, the game has no loading screens. Ada was the character that took the developers the longest to get right, as they tried to figure out which appearance would fit the character. They decided to base her appearance on that of a classic spy The license plate on Claire's motorcycle reads "J2198", which is another reference to the US release of the original game (January 21, 1998). The likeness of Leon S. Kennedy and Claire Redfield are based on models Eduard Badaluta and Jordan Mcewen respectively. Mcewen was uncredited for her work, as her modeling agency didn't want her name to be revealed. However, she confirmed her involvement in the project on Instagram, saying that she went to Osaka in 2016 to work with Capcom. When the player defeats the final form of G, the cutscene shows a closeup of its eye for a second. This is a nod to the menu screen of Resident Evil 2 (1998). Despite being fan-favourites, giant moths, spiders and zombie crows are absent in this remake. According to the producers, they were dropped as they would've clashed with the realistic tone the developers were aiming for.
I’m like the only one who thinks that Leon’s weapons are better than Claire’s, and especially in the remake’s B scenario and the entirety of the original. I just kept getting my ass kicked whenever I played as Claire. Edit: I just found out I’m a f*cking moron. I wasn’t aware you could get weapon upgrades as Claire. I went into the game thinking that because that’s the way the original worked.
Well, at least you admit that you pulled a moron move. How you managed to miss any upgrades to Claire's weapons when they are in the SAME SPOT AS LEON'S is a mystery to me.

As someone who's new to the resident evil franchise. This is one of the best purchases i ever made on my ps4, I was straight up addicted to this game. I wanted to get the re 3 remake but I heard the game was too short so I passed on it
Bro get it. Yes it’s short but you can beat this game in under 3 hours too if you’re good. All resident evil games can be short lol. Your first play through of re3 remake will take around 10-12 hours. It’s only 20-30 bucks new so bro you’re hella missing out. If you love this you’ll love the 3rd game
I like to think that because Leon can’t walk and aim in re4 but can in re2re, it means something happened between the games that made him lose the ability to walk and aim at the same time.
Everyone keeps saying RE2 remake was a masterpiece but no one talks about the content they cut. I remember there was more areas between the sewers and the lab in the original game. And let's not forget the poorly done 2nd scenarios. It was a fantastic and great remake , I can agree to that, but to praise this game and hate on RE3 remake? I can't understand that. Btw, hands down the best remake will always be RE1 remake!
The RE Remakes (minus the first) are all missing quite a bit. Especially the awesome enemies cut and locations. I think RE3make is more hated on is because it feels more lackluster, I mean it is short as hell. Meanwhile there is lots more content in RE2make. They didn't even put the best location in 3 in remake(imo).
@@darthdavius4780 Not nearly as short and had lots of replay value. The remake was missing locations and enemies as well, along with no branching paths.
@@masterindra7604 I've seen speedrunners finish the original game in about 50 minutes. RE3 was always shorter than RE2. RE2 was a beast of a gaming accomplishment! No other game has made the same impact in the franchise, RE4 comes close but no cigar. Sure the remake was more linear but the changes weren't that bad, the game was still a blast to replay. All in all, I still feel that Capcom captured the essence of RE3.
I mean...kind of. I see what your saying, but don't dare tell me that RE2make's ''cut content'' is anywhere near as drastic or lacking as RE3make's was. How can you NOT understand that the former did cut down as much as the latter?
This might have already been stated by commenters a few times. But if you want a detailed explanation for how RE2's campaign structure was supposed to work, here it is below... The original RE2 had its campaign structured as either Leon-A/Claire-B or Claire-A/Leon-B, depending on which character you chose to play as first. Similar to the the First/Second Run scenarios in the remake, this would admittedly cause you to repeat some of the exact rooms, enemy layouts, and puzzles as your secondary character. However, the cutscenes and boss fights in the original's scenarios were actually created to match up and not repeat anything, so that each B-scenario fills in the narrative gaps of its A-scenario counterpart. There were even subtle mechanics, which allowed you to make choices in the A scenario that would affect your B scenario's playthrough. For example, the A-scenario boss fights would go as G-Adult -> Mutant Alligator -> G2 Birkin -> G4 Birkin, whereas the sequence of B-scenario boss fights would go as G1 Birkin -> Mutant Alligator (if you merely repelled the giant beast, rather than blowing it up) -> G3 Birkin -> Super Tyrant -> G5 Birkin. To give an example of alternate subplots: In the Claire-A/Leon-B arrangement, Annette dies in front of Sherry and Ada instead gets injured by Mr. X, right before he gets burned and transforms into a Super Tyrant. Leon finishes the Tyrant off. In the Leon-A/Claire-B arrangement, Ada Wong gets shot by Annette, Sherry and Claire go out to the catwalk to see Annette dying, and Mr. X gets burned when he pursues Sherry for her G-Virus sample. In turn, Claire fights Mr. X as a Super Tyrant. The main problem with the RE2 Remake is that it only commits to the original's campaign structure half-heartedly, creating a lot more repetition, a narrower variety of alternate subplots, and a lack of continuity between the First/Second Run.
I honestly don't understand how that many people can even be happy with what we got here because this structure simply does not work for a game about two characters who both have their own important sub plots and events to occur. Scenarios necessarily had to complement and not to contradict but that's exactly what they do.
@@pretenderxxx2385 As I said somewhere else in this comment section, it's as if they could not decide whether the RE2 Remake's narrative structure should be that of RE1 (where each campaign is non-canonical and self-contained, with one character doing everything in one go), the original RE2 (where both characters contribute their own "half-campaign" which varies based on who you play as first), or RE6 (where multiple campaigns form the exact canonical events, with each character having fixed subplots, boss fights, etc.). So what we got is a confused hybrid of all three styles, which is just messy and makes no sense. Sometimes, the RE2 Remake acts like RE1, where the protagonist you currently pick gets the majority of boss fights and interactions with major characters, allowing no possibility of another story happening offscreen. It even gets to a point where Mr. X gets prematurely killed in Claire's campaign, like Barry's implied fate during Chris' intro of RE1. Yet other times, the scenarios purposefully leave some loose ends, requiring a secondary campaign to tie them, like with the original RE2 and RE6. But within those circumstances, it sometimes lets you change the story based on First/Second Run (such as who meets Marvin, fights G5, etc.) while denying you that choice for other aspects (like how Claire and Leon respectively fight G4 and Super Tyrant, no matter what). Not to mention, because these campaigns repeat certain parts or contradict each other, they fail to properly fill the gaps in their counterparts' narratives.
Very good points as far as I can see. This game was my favorite childhood game and the remake was supposed to be something special for me but this one big ugly flaw just killed it for me.
I have some sort of hot takes on this game. 1) Making it a third person shooter doesn’t automatically mean it’s better than the original. The fixed camera angles, while difficult to get used to, did necessitate some uniquely creative game design and created a steep but cathartic difficulty curve - things that lend themselves well to a horror game and that Capcom games have more often than not excelled at, at least in the past. The fixed camera angles were sometimes more frustrating than scary, but they should always have a place in the RE franchise, even if exclusive to lower budget side series’. 2) This is the best controlling of all the third person RE games (yes, even including RE4, even though it’s debatable whether the game design is better than RE4) Something that this game does with the controls that’s kind of cool and goes overlooked is that dodging a zombie in RE2 is very similar to dodging zombies in the RE1 “remake” when you have the modern analog controls enabled, where you can bait the zombies but you have to be ready to change directions on a dime. That’s very smart because they know people who play RE2 Remake are going to want to go back and play RE0+1, which were already collected on current gen consoles. The business and creative interests perfectly aligned in RE’s favor this console generation!
Hell yes for a Retrospective my boy! Definitely down for that. I wasn't really a survival horror person myself until this came out and then bam! Fucking love this game.
It’s in my new top 5 games of all time. This game reintroduced me to the rest of the series because I only played 4 and 5 before. And I love coming back to it from time to time.
You can still "dodge" grabs without an item you need to very quickly hold left or right depending which side the zombie grabs you, I need to get back into speedrunning resi 2 remake such a fun game.
The explanation for the plot holes in the two campaigns not lining up are simply: they got lazy in that area. Still a great game though. I find those tank controls insufferable so I appreciated this remake.
I tried playing this about a year and a half ago and didn’t get too far. I started replaying it last night and I’m making a ton of progress and I got to Mr. X and it was the biggest adrenaline rush I’ve ever gotten from a video game.
I'm very excited to see you talk about all the Resident Evil games, and although I havent played very many, I do really like the franchise and its story. It would be amazing to see you talk about all the games.
The OG re2 handled the A and B scenarios so much better. It’s weird how a game from almost 30 years ago can handle something like that better than a new one. Like they aren’t capable of doing it anymore. It’s weird.
Excellent video! Something else that I think is a very good point about RE2 Remake is that I feel that the boss battles are very well designed. In the classic/PS1 RE games, some of the boss battles involved simply just parking yourself in a spot, and firing your strongest weapon until the boss stopped moving. I liked how the RE2R bosses involved skillful use of your weapons, as well as knowing how to dodge certain attacks. As someone who loves your Mega Man videos, and as someone who was big a fan of the RE games since the original, I will be interested to see how you enjoy the PS1 era games!
It was actually pretty cool seeing your perspective on RE2Make (Which is very clever might I add) after repeatedly watching SomeCallMeJohnny's view on it for so long and I didn't think you or even Exo would do anything on this franchise and yet here we go, good job dude, I'm definitely excited for your review of Resident Evil 4 especially because of the high amount of replayability Johnny said it had.
Last year I got Resident 4 Wii Edition after getting into the series with RE2 Remake and honestly I would say it's the best way to play the game. The motion controls translate smoothly and there's no awkward aiming like using a controller
I have a few qüestions: 1. Will you review all the DS Sonic games in one video or will you make individual videos for each one of them? 2. What Mario games have you played? 3. Will you ever review a Mario game?
In reference to being scared, I grew up with an 8 year older brother in the 80s and as a result watched a metric shit ton of crazy horror flicks way younger than I probably should have lol. But the funny thing is I love the feeling of being scared but in a controlled situation. Scary movies, video games, haunted houses and hayrides on Halloween lol. Just that feeling of being scared for your safety while also knowing you aren't actually in any harm. Fear let's you know you're alive and have something to live for. On the flip side this "fun fear" is addictive like a drug so for decades I've been watching every scary movie I can get my hands on, going to multiple spook walks and haunted houses every October and just in general taking part in scary but harmless activities trying to chase that thing that makes me feel afraid , but you get like a sort of a desensitization to it so it becomes harder and harder to find that next good scare. Sorry for the run on sentence, not so great at expressing thoughts in a text format but I was just curious as to how many other horror fans out there get the same feeling as me when trying to get skeered 😬🤣🤣
Though it's technically my third RE game I've tried (bought but barely even touched RE5, played but haven't finished RE4 and I love it) but my dad and I played through and I loved this game, it's fantastic.

@@Rationalific ya I think that’s a good way of looking at it
Nah, that still doesn't work because Leon B wouldn't work with Claire A still.
And bro the timing of Re2 Remake was big.. we needed it then and it came out around that time. It really is a masterpiece

It was less complicated in the OG version.
Picked this game up for my dad two Christmases ago, he played the originals on ps1 and I have to say, he's still playing them two years on, finally got around to hunks playthrough!
They just didn't want to do the ZAPPING system properly from the original... so each of the 4 stories are basically alternate realities :(
The inconsistencies between the A and B plots are likely due to them trying to work with that concept in the remake. Ultimately it was scrapped due to time constraints but they likely kept a lot of the story beats and scenes. We get pieces of what these A and B scenarios might have looked like but can be confusing as a result.
Interesting. Did the developers ever speak on this matter?

I still remember when this first came out and how BIG of an improvement it was over the original. They packed so much into RE2 it was crazy back then.
A retrospective about a 2 year old game? lol. Its only two years old, of course it holds up.
2 years was enough for people to turn on Sonic Adventure, Battle Arena Toshinden and Final Fantasy XIII.
@@Chelaxim ngl i dont know anything about those games. were they highly praised on release then people just decided they were actually bad two years later?
@@pereztube2 Yep. This rule also applies to basically every Zelda release too.
@@bastian8271 what do you mean? I think pretty much every Zelda game seems to hold up in the eyes of fans and critics. Breath of the Wild is still considered great by most and that game is like 4 years old already. I think if a game is legitimately great it tends to hold up at least until the next game in the series( or genre) comes out and surpasses it. Its games that are kinda meh or games that are good but have significant problems that tend to fall out of favor that quickly.
@@pereztube2 Oh believe me, I'm on the same boat as you! But if youre deep in the Zelda fandom, you can clearly see how divisive those guys can get. Hell, there's lots of negativity even towards Breath of the Wild now. I guess most fandoms will always hyperanalyze everything
As someone who recently played the original the remake was amazing. My big gripe is the 2nd runs were tacked on. It isn’t that different from 1st run.

Seriously? RE4 was just a shallow over-the-shoulder shooter. RE2make made the enemies resilient, as they should be!

Like you mentioned, A/B scenerio lack much of needed difference to distinquish it from main game which leaves it as just **the videogame hard mode that includes the true final boss and ending*** which was confirmed later by the devs that A/B scenerios were last minute addition just so they can extend the games length which explains it's akward inclusion, there's also the fact that the boss fights feel overall on par with original (if not worse thanks to modern tech and more developed understanding of horror games) they're just walking tank who can be only damaged by hitting specific weakspots while having stuff turning movemet, (it's at it worst during Leon campaigns final boss with MR.X during the lift where you keep circling around while the area gets tighter until ada drops the RPG), I did feel like there was chance to improve for more interesting encounters such example such as Second form-berkin fight either leon or claire where you have to choices either hitting him twice with switch that knocks him over or finishing him manually with bullets.
Claire can be much harder for me to play at first thanks to her starter weapon being a revolver with 5 ammos per magazine and slow animation reload compared to leon's matilda faster loading and bigger magazine, tho there's flaw that you could upgrade leon's maltida pistol to 3-burst pistol and more steady him early the game after first berkin fight which makes him quite overpowered, specially when ammo for pistol and gunpowders are quite plentiful compared to shotguns or Mags.
and on final note i felt both third weapons (Leon's Flamethrower and claire's electric shock were only useful during lab section against the mutated plant creatures since they only become burden in inventory eventually, In some playthroughs I skipped aquiring them and the only consenquence I met was having lower ammo during final section so i tend to skim over them tho i won't deny using electric shocker have some level of cool factor
I hope this long list didn't give way that i ended up disliking the game quite the opposite I loved it and replayed multiple times, I only noticed these issues with reocurring playthroughs so it's quite plus for the game, I grasp that having same experiance or improved compared to the first playthrough is sometime impossible, and also avoided making too many comparsions with original since i feel like game is bit far removed from it to make too many comparsions without coming off unfair
The Zapping System wasn't a part of the concept for RE2make until the last 4 months of development, that's why it isn't fleshed out more.
Only good thing about her loadout is that Acid Rounds can stunlock some bosses (mainly G2 and G3)
Will you review RE3Remake as well?
@@JsReviews ''fair points'', my ass. His points were mostly incorrect.
@@SweetChildofMine-l5y
Yes it is an instant kill 100% of the time, the thing is, if you have the base Shotgun the range you have to have with the zombie head is so close that sometimes you risk getting grabbed or missing the target.
Chill dude.

They decided to base her appearance on that of a classic spy
The license plate on Claire's motorcycle reads "J2198", which is another reference to the US release of the original game (January 21, 1998).

@@masterindra7604 original RE3 was short too
@@darthdavius4780 Not nearly as short and had lots of replay value.
@@pretenderxxx2385
As I said somewhere else in this comment section, it's as if they could not decide whether the RE2 Remake's narrative structure should be that of RE1 (where each campaign is non-canonical and self-contained, with one character doing everything in one go), the original RE2 (where both characters contribute their own "half-campaign" which varies based on who you play as first), or RE6 (where multiple campaigns form the exact canonical events, with each character having fixed subplots, boss fights, etc.).
2) This is the best controlling of all the third person RE games (yes, even including RE4, even though it’s debatable whether the game design is better than RE4)
Something that this game does with the controls that’s kind of cool and goes overlooked is that dodging a zombie in RE2 is very similar to dodging zombies in the RE1 “remake” when you have the modern analog controls enabled, where you can bait the zombies but you have to be ready to change directions on a dime. That’s very smart because they know people who play RE2 Remake are going to want to go back and play RE0+1, which were already collected on current gen consoles. The business and creative interests perfectly aligned in RE’s favor this console generation!
Its been two years now?? Damn...times goes fast
Hell yes for a Retrospective my boy!
Definitely down for that.
I wasn't really a survival horror person myself until this came out and then bam! Fucking love this game.
That Licker in the interrogation room WILL chase you into the other room. If I remember correctly, he climbs on the ceiling and jumps down at you.
It’s in my new top 5 games of all time. This game reintroduced me to the rest of the series because I only played 4 and 5 before. And I love coming back to it from time to time.
The main thing I got from this was that I've been on pc so long that I forgot which button was reload on a controller.
Another vote for J's review of the original trilogy
The OG re2 handled the A and B scenarios so much better. It’s weird how a game from almost 30 years ago can handle something like that better than a new one. Like they aren’t capable of doing it anymore. It’s weird.
Has it really been 2 years since it released? Geeze, where does the time go?
Marvin is also a character from Re:outbreak. He was always fleshed out and wasn't like a random npc
Last year I got Resident 4 Wii Edition after getting into the series with RE2 Remake and honestly I would say it's the best way to play the game. The motion controls translate smoothly and there's no awkward aiming like using a controller
I have a few qüestions:
Please do the 3make review and the entire series as well
This game was the best way to spend my Halloween weekend last year and has made a fan of the series after the remake of the first didn't completely win me over. Have played up to Re4 so far (which is just short of this game imo) looking forward to giving the rest of them a go soon and down for that retrospective for sure. Good work as always J
I just finished playing it with Claire on standard with a S+ and I still love the original and remake 2
Never heard of you bro. Good video.
The story is better in the orginal for the a and b scenario enemies respawn getting S rank is awful in b scenario the lights don't turn on permanently like in the orginal so you feel like you accomplished advancing areas mr X follows you constantly now so its obnoxious to traverse the game
I always love seeing newcomer videos on Resident Evil! Been a fan since the first one and it's a blast to see new people fall in love with the series! I hope you enjoy your time with those classics!
Also just walk past the giant spiders in the old games. Those things don't do shit but waste ammo. Sometimes they don't even attack me so.... /ignore them arachnids.
