6 years ago after being laid off a 16 year stable (or so I thought) job, I went to Michael’s purchased some yarn and hooks and attempted to learn. Fast forward to 2018, I’m starting my own crochet business! I’ve made tons of blankets, throws, hats and scarves, shawls, slippers, crocodile stitches on summer sandals, my next big venture is a cardigan for my eldest sister. How did I learn? Looking at hundreds of RUclips videos of tons of beautiful crochet items, writing down tons of patterns and asking tons of questions. Now, this is my number one pass time when I’m off work.

    Two things about tension.
    1. The reason crocheters hold the yarn looped around their fingers in the hand not holding the hook is to CONTROL TENSION.
HOWEVER, getting used to that is difficult and many think they can skip it. DON'T! You'll never be able to control the tension until you master holding the yarn. Even many tutorials do not mention the REASON holding the yarn like this important. But it's to control the tension. If you've ever had to thread a sewing machine, you know that the thread goes through a whole series of different loops and circles. That's to control the tension. The same principle is used with crochet.
I have seen yarn held several ways. I was taught to hold it by looping it under and around my left pinky (I'm right-handed), then across my palm and behind my left index finger and toward the work. It's not hard to do once you're used to it and gives you control over the tension. THERE ARE TUTORIALS THAT DEMONSTRATE THIS AND OTHER METHODS HERE, ON RUclips.
    2. A quick way to MASTER TENSION is to set this task for yourself: For 2 weeks (14 days), make 5, 100-count chains. That's all. Every day, make 5 chains of 100. It sounds boring and tedious and it is. And the first few days will feel like torture. Your hands will cramp and it will feel so awkward and your stitches will seem hopeless.
The POINT of this exercise is to develop muscle memory. Slowly, over those two weeks, you will adapt. You will get used to setting up the yarn on your hand, making your knot, then making your chain. By the end of the two weeks, it will feel almost natural. BTW, the chains don't have to be exactly 100, but a long chain. And you can take them out and do them over, if you like. It's an exercise.
The point is that, in just 2 weeks you'll have all tension issues solved and you can move on to actually crocheting.
This, BTW, is what my mother made me do when I first learned to crochet, 40 years ago. I hated it but I did it because I wanted to learn. And I was so glad at the end of the two weeks.
When I started my hands cramped, the chains were all over the place and I hated it. But I worked at it and by the end of just 2 short weeks I could make those chains without a second thought and the tension was completely consistent. So, it was worth it. I never had tension issues again.

Marige OBrien I have tried this but the yarn doesn’t slide through easy so I end up with uneven stitches. I grab the yarn with my pinky like a j, or if you know sign language, it’s how you sign the letter J. Than I do just like you, over my palm, under my index and over toward work. It slides fairly easy this way but when I tried completely wrapping yarn around my pinky it wouldn’t slide. I hope this makes sense.

Just starting crochet. Can knit hats and pillows and blankets, but want to crochet. So, do you mean 5 separate chains of 100 ea? A chain of 100, tie it off; another chain of 100, tie it off, until you've done 5 chains? You don't mean a chain of 100 and then go back into the chain and crochet the opposite way making like another row? Just want to clarify.

Thank you for your tip, I still have a ways to go but just getting used to the needle and yarn with all that practice has eased so much of my frustrations. Thank you again!!!

I don't frequently comment on videos but just had to today. I've loved following these videos and was devastated to hear the news of Melanie passing. Her videos have been some of my favorites. For the last several weeks I've been working a popcorn stitch granny square baby blanket. I still consider myself a beginner so this was a big project. I have been so overwhelmed by it and frustrated to the point that I have been dragging my feet to finish. I finally felt like it was done and gave it a gentle wash and dry (from another Melanie video suggestion). It washed beautifully until I realized I didn't properly sew in one of my ends and a HUGE hole and more unraveled ends popped up. My heart sank and I was about to scrap the whole thing but turned to RUclips for help. This video played after one I was watching and it made me pause and really listen... I cannot thank Melanie enough for what she said in this video it was EXACTLY what I needed to hear. I am currently patching my blanket with some of it's loving imperfections (cause that's ok!) so I can mail it off to it's new home with a beautiful happy baby boy ❤️

    • @batintheattic7293
      @batintheattic7293 5 лет назад +1

Me too (year late). I hope it went well, Carol. After a substantial hiatus, I'm just starting knitting and crochet again. I round loom knit some leg warmers and it was a very stressful experience. I'm not sure I learned very much from the process. I think my mistake was that my first endeavor was for a present for somebody else. If I'd just been playing around trying to make myself something I wouldn't have had so many do-overs and I'd have learned more from my experimentation.
So, Carol, if the project of last year scared the crochet right out of you - why not try again but don't have any strict intentions about who it's for or what it's going to be or look like.
And I wonder if, for your arthritic fingers, you could try what I find eases my joints a bit. I bought some spray on magnesium oil (mainly for my knees). Spraying it on your fingers, before you start to crochet, might really work the oil in to where it can get to work. A bit of oil, on the yarn, shouldn't be a problem.

    • @pjki4391
      @pjki4391 5 лет назад +1

That's me -- arthritic fingers. I can knit hats and pillows and blankets, but wanted to try my hand at crocheting. Can't hold the yarn in my left hand. Trying to figure out all the different ways I COULD hold it tightly in order to crochet. Not having a lot of luck with the tension.

Anyway I have been very discouraged. I have completed one blanket in full. I started over several times but would not give up. I’m on my second one which has had some challenges but have listened to all of your tricks. Most of all I love the fact that you said not to get discouraged and know that this happens to a lot of people. I was very close to quoting and thinking that I just could not do it. I have an extremely hard time with tension. 😬 Im actually an experienced crocheter, I have peripheral nerve damage, and ADD. When I'm stressed out, I crochet at times to chill out. So you will see ,at times ,that my stitches will start out super tight and loosen as I go. But usually I see ,that as time goes on the loosening isn't as serious as it seems.
You are absolutely right, don't take it apart ! I have done that so many times. Plus, a lot of times just going back n stretching parts to even things out at the end works. Just understanding ,that like handwriting , people have their own style. Not all projects look exactly the same , and turn out exactly the same size.
The best thing you said ,was patience, patience, patience. You have explained this so well and you seem like such a caring n helpful person . Thank you for taking your time to help people to learn. I learned to crochet a chain first , and then a double crochet at age 8/9 years old watching an older lady , and she kept making me do it over n over before she d teach me more. Then we moved and I didn't see her for a long time. I am now 44 , and I picked it back up about 4 years ago and I'm telling you ,watching youtube has made my work so much better and taught me new and amazing stitches and I have more confidence . The more I work ,the more it helps my stress. Each time I make an item for the second time ,it looks better than the first. You will surprise yourself. I wanna say , thank you again, because people like you , helped me , to get back into it . Which not only helped my medical issues, but helped me be able to make nice items. Sorry this is long ,but I like to let people know that I am thankful . Be Blessed👏🏼

i stumbled on this video a bit late, but I HAD to comment.. the wash cloth example, about ending up with less stiches then you began with brings back memories! 😋 I started crocheting years ago, but i still have my first real project. after making a chain for the first time, i picked up 2 skeins of very bulky yarn and a 8 mm hook. i started with a chain of 25 and just crocheted away with single crochet stiches. I really tried to remember to ALWAYS chain one at the end of each row, but two weeks and hours every evening later, i ended up with a 2 yard scarf that had: 25 stiches at the beginning, about a quarter through it had 23 stitches , after 3 quarters it had 21, and finished it had 20!
I still have that scarf. I wear it with pride and nostalgia. and even though i make a scarf now in 10% of time that first one took me, with nice patterns and stuff, and the right stitch count,😂, this first scarf will be my favourite for ever!

One year ago this month i started learning to crochet. The lady that taught me different simple patterns and techniques told me first thing that the most difficult part of ANY project is starting the foundation. I practiced and practiced on so many stitches just to get used to my tension and see what i become comfortable with.
And with being in lockdown twice then in quarantine after contracting Covid crocheting has helped keep me sane.
One year now and i have already made 8 blankets, MANY potholders lol (my practice pieces) a table runner and now I'm making a wall hanging to place around a frame to hang in my bedroom just because I'm hoping that itll be a fun challenge.
I think the best thing is knowing that each piece is unique and WE may see the flaws in something we create but most times they aren't that noticable to anyone else lol. I always try going into a project with the mindset of I'm just having fun and enjoying the challenge and even my goofups are learning experiences and i can take that knowledge into the NEXT project. :-)

Melanie, I just think you are terrific. I am not a beginner crocheter. I've been knitting since I was 9 years old. I taught myself to crochet from an Annie's Attic written tutorial 30 years ago. i would have loved to learn from your videos. you are so kind and supportive and so very friendly. I feel like you are a true friend of mine. I made two of those baby blankets that you have a video tutorial on with the Baby Blanket yarn. They came out just beautiful. Also I'm working on the chevron blanket with the Blanket yarn (shown in black & white). My grandkids are calling it the zebra blanket. Thanks again for your wonderful videos and generous spirit.

I bought some yarn and hooks to self teach myself how to crochet while I am off work, but I seem to be in a funk due to not being around all my awesome customers. I love watching your videos - you taught me how to sew and I will always be grateful. I hope that I will be able to continue to learn more crocheting and sewing but I don't know if $$ will allow it. My grandmother was a crochet machine! She was so good and I'm sad that I never took the time to really learn from her 😢 living in separate countries made it even harder. Now that she's not longer with me, I'm thinking of learning to honor her in my own humble way 😢 She made all her dresses and shirts when crochet wasn't hip with young people. Your video inspired me to give it a try once again to honor her memory. I'm 42 but I know it's never too late. Thank you from a complete beginner 🙏🏻💜

I first learned to crochet from my grandmother when I was about 7 yrs. old. She would just have me make chains and I would want to hurry and make something. Thank you so much for your encouraging words.

The "curl up at the corners" thing happened to me just last night--I was practicing a stitch, making a square with some scrap yarn, and it started curling on me. Thank you for explaining why! I'm used to working with chain maille, and sometimes patterns DO curl up in weird ways; it's good to know that that's not what's happening here!

Great video for a beginner crocheter like myself so thank you for this! I am quite comfortable knitting but I am definitely having many of the same issues listed here, such as tension 😾 I didn't see it mentioned in the comments at all so I would love some advice from you or anyone who reads this - how do you stop your yarn from curling/twisting?! It's irritating as you're working along your project and it's just become super curly and wound up. I try not to hold the yarn too tightly but it just happens anyway. Does this happen to anyone else?

I just inherited all my mom's yarn. She was amazing at crocheting. I think the best way I can honor her is to just pick up one of the 100+ crochet hooks she had and start learning. She had about 200 skeins (sp?) Of beautiful yarn. We lost her to covid just over a year ago. I'm working on on all these things you just went over and have crocheted 1.5 skeins without giving up. It's just the beginner stitch, but my 26 yr old son (today is his bday) told me to not stop and he would be honored to wear the very first scarf I ever made. ❤ My scarf looks a bit funky on the sides, but it's getting straighter and straighter as I go. I have incurable stage 4 cancer and love the thought of making something family will cherish, if I pass. Even if it's not perfect. ❤ Thank you for your help.

I presume you have the same option with an ipad. (perhaps someone with one can chime in?) Look lower right hand corner of the videos on the bottom from Right to Left you will a square (to make video full screen), a rectangle (clicking will make it half screen, and a sprocket that will give you the options of speeding up or slowing down the video. Often there is CC too for closed caption where the words or a translation is printed on the screen.

@@jojosewist8921 I can't understand most magazines or crochet books because I'm left-handed and their very easy (to them) instructions to hold the diagrams up to a mirror to see it left-handed is just plain awkward and doesn't help much. But once I figured out that if I FACE someone and mirror what they do, I can do it. Because of this discovery I can also teach right handed people. RUclips is helpful also in explaining lots of details about stitches and tricks in getting your project looking good. So keep looking for other crochet teachers like Melanie who can give you ideas and encouragement. Don't give up. You can do this!

Michelle Fitchett Here is what I say... You do You... Don't do me or anyone else. If you want to pull it out and start over then do that. I think that is can be very defeating doing that because you never get to see anything complete, even if it's imperfect. So I personally feel that you should purchase inexpensive yarn and make something fun with it so that is what I will recommend, but if that feels strange to you then pull it out and start over!

Hi, I liked your video but I think you should have used the word "lost" instead of "dumb" because we're not dumb and I don't like being bested by something and "lost" at least has hope of encouraging (as I'm ripping out my project right as the moment you said not too lol). And you're right, getting a lesson from a teacher from Jo-Ann's is extremely frustrating. I learned more about the teacher's psycho daughter-in-law then I did about crochet. I've tried other teachers but they've all been right-handed and they can't seem to deal with me being left-handed. Boy, were they mean about it. This is some solid advice! I just picked crocheting back up again as something fun to do, and this video is wonderful advice for someone that's literally picking up yarn and hook for the first time. I too learned to just leave mistakes alone and try to have fun; you'll fall into a flow and learn things as you go.
I also saw some comments advising against making your very first project for someone else; yes, it's definitely better to learn on something that you're only making for yourself. It's a lot less pressure, and you'll be a lot more forgiving towards your mistakes. I want to make a scarf for my friend, but I want to gain more experience, too.
