✦ HELPFUL INFORMATION
Chain stitches are an essential part of crocheting and their abbreviation in patterns is "ch".
Starting chain / foundation chain = first row of chain stitches that form the foundation for your entire crochet project. Most crochet projects start with a row of chain stitches.
Chains are a great stitch to practice until you find a comfortable way to hold the yarn and hook (lots of different options to hold the hook by the way ha ha I'm always fascinated watching others crochet because we all seem to have our own unique way of doing things).
Chains are also a great stitch to practice to learn how to get an even tension (not have your stitches be too loose or too tight, have all the chain loops be relatively the same size). Tips for getting an even tension are to take a few yards of yarn at a time out of the skein to work with. Out of the camera frame I have yarn loosely piled to the side so I'm not tugging on the skein to release more yarn to work with.

THANK YOU FOR HAVING AN ACTUAL BEGINNER'S FRIENDLY TUTORIAL! I tried for well over an hour with other tutorials and this is the first one that actually makes some sort of sense. My chain has four full stitches now!!
Ah yay! I'm so happy to hear that! 🥳🙌🏻 You just made my day! So happy to hear I could be of any help in your crochet journey 🥰 Thank you so much for the kind feedback and encouragement!
I could cry right now lol I have struggled for a week to learn how to do this chain stitch and watched tutorial after tutorial.. literally just changing the way I hold the yarn to second way you showed made all the difference in the world. Thank you so much 🖤🖤🖤
Ah that's so awesome!! I'm incredibly happy this tutorial was helpful for you! You just made my whole day 🥰❤️ thank you so much for taking the time to write me a comment and let me know!
This is the *only* tutorial that worked for me. Thank you so much!!!
You're so very welcome! So happy to hear you found the tutorial useful 🥰 thank you so much for the kind feedback!
I've crocheted for a long time but I still always watch lots of tutorials about the basics. Tension is something I occasionally still struggle with which really shows in foundation chains. Thank you so much for the lovely clear, slow tutorial! ❤
Aw you’re very welcome!! Thank you so much for the kind comment 🥰 so happy you found the video helpful!
OH MY GID IVE BEEN TRYING FOR 3 MONTHS I FINALLY DID IT

I didn’t get a single stitch it just kept falling
Ah oh no! I'm so sorry to hear that 😞 is there anything I could have done differently in this tutorial that you'd find helpful?
Fantastic tutorial😍

Omg tysm this helped me so much i have been going threw tutorial after tutorial and this worked tysm im subed and liked :)
Can you make a tutorial for thin yarn? I accidentally got the thinnest yarn like ever- and my dad refuses to get me thicker yarn- honestly feel like I could cry rn lmao
Thank you for this!!! I have watched a bunch of tutorials. Got my supplies and today could not even make a single stitch. Was totally demoralized. All tutorials just say "pull the loop over". Tomorrow going to try with bulkier yarn and bigger hook so I can actually see. 😅😅 really hoping I can do it lol
Learning to crochet can be a little tricky so please don't feel down at all! You totally got this 🙌🏻 how are things going??
@@DarlingBeBrave going much better! Trying to find yarn that is easier to work with helped. I've made a few small bags and some baby booties in the past few weeks.
@@aaronblasyak1527 aw yay! I'm so happy to hear that! Sounds like things are going great 🥰
Awesome update my friend in the middle of making arms for covid bug I am making
Aw thank you! ❤️
You give clear and easy to follow instructions on how to crochet. TYSM for creating these videos. I’ve never really paid attention to which way I hold the yarn while crocheting…it’s the 3rd way you showed. It’s funny I had to try it to figure out which way it was. 😂 Have a wonderful weekend!! 🥰🍂🍁🌻
Oh thank you so much! So glad you’re enjoying these videos 🥰❤️ I’m always fascinated watching how others hold their yarn when they crochet! So many different options! The 3rd way I showed is how I have to hold the yarn whenever I try to knit to help me have an even tension 🙌🏻
Im still having so many issues i wanna learn but im such a slow learner and dont understand the grip nor getting a single chain
my hook will never pull through. I pull it but the string just tightens. its like im pulling the yarn away from the hook. im so confused and I cant get passed this. do you know what im doing wrong?
Whenever I try to put the yarn through the loop, the loop is the same size as the yarn so I always end up pulling it instead of it being inserted into the loop and starting all over again. Is the loop supposed to be small or big? I don't really know, but I would like to know what I'm doing wrong 😮💨
Shoot I'm so sorry to hear that! 😞 Maybe try easing your tension just a little (try not to pull on the yarn as tight, try to keep things a little more loose) because the loop on the hook should be just big enough for the "yarn over yarn" (the bit of yarn you're grabbing with your hook to pull through the loop that's already on your hook) to be able to easily pass through. I hope this helps, and I hope I'm understanding your question correctly! If not, please let me know. Keep practicing, maybe try a thicker yarn and hook while you're gaining this new muscle memory. And maybe try watching the "5:28 - troubleshooting stitches too tight" section of this video, it's linked in my description. You've totally got this! ❤️
That was is easy 😊I will save this video but I will give you.a like
aw thank you so much! ❤️
This is the best tutorial I’ve seen yet, but I’m still not getting it. I feel like I’m doing it, but then nothing happens. No knot, it’s just like I twisted 2 strands of yarn. I knit, so this shouldn’t be so hard 😢
If it makes you feel any better, my brain and hands have a really hard time wrapping around knitting! So that's amazing you can knit! ❤️ I feel like crocheting and knitting require such different hand muscle memory and movement. Wish I knew what I could do to help you better with the crochet chain stitch though! Are you able to make the slip knot okay and get it on your hook?
I ca do it up to the yarn over. After that, my top loop comes off instead of the second one. Can you help?
I hope I'm understanding your question correctly. Do you mean the yarn over yarn (the yarn you just grabbed with your crochet hook) slips off your hook before you can pull it through the loop that's already on your hook? Do you know what type of crochet hook you're using, by chance? I know that whenever I use Susan Bates brand of hooks, I have a bit of a harder time keeping the yarn on my hook while I'm yarning over (grabbing the yarn with my hook to pull through the stitches on my hook). The tip of the crochet hook is shaped a bit differently. I personally prefer to use Boye Yarn Crafts brand hooks but I know a lot who prefer Susan Bates so maybe you could try playing out with a different brand of crochet hook and see if that helps!
Otherwise, just go slow while you're learning this new skill. It takes a little while to gain the muscle memory. You could also try using a thicker yarn and the corresponding crochet hook the yarn recommends (if you check the label of the yarn you buy, it should tell you what size of hook to be using for that particular yarn, in case you didn't already know) while you're learning to make a chain stitch. I know that using a super bulky yarn helps me a lot whenever I'm trying to learn how to knit something 😂 so I'm hoping it would help when it comes to learning to crochet as well! Definitely easier to see the stitches.
@@DarlingBeBraveI'm using a thicker yarn with the correct size. But, I do use that brand! Thanks!
How do you crochet?
What exactly are you needing help with or wanting to learn when it comes to crocheting? ❤️
And it’s my yarn is really thin so is my hook
You could maybe try using a thicker yarn and hook while you learn this new muscle memory/skill? I've had students in the past have an easier time learning this stitch with a bulky weight yarn
I can do a chain stitch I just can’t get any further than that for some reason. 😢
Aw I'm so sorry to hear that! Learning to crochet can be a little tricky sometimes 😅 I need to make an updated single crochet stitch tutorial video!
Every time I do this the slip knot comes off
I'm sorry to hear that! 😔 Which part/motion is causing the knot to fall off? You could maybe try tightening the slip knot a little more on your hook. It should still be able to slide up and down your hook but be snug enough that it doesn't fall off your hook while you're working the stitches. Hope this helps! ❤️
SAME omg 😭
It's ok!, my uncle taught me how to hand crochet! Turns out I'm bad with the hook :)
