My grandmother taught me to crochet/sew during summer visits when I was 7 yrs old. I must have been a very patient little girl & her a patient teacher. she made beautiful blankets for the church. Those memories with her have stayed with me all my life.
My grandma tried to do the same thing except I was a little gremlin with undiagnosed adhd so I never got the hang of it. Now that I’m older and actually have an attention span I want to get back into it

This video put me on the right track and I managed to get an itty bitty practice chain going in about 15 minutes! Thank you! 🙏
I love that she showed how to unravel the first piece of yarn. I was struggling to find the end but she was so confident when she did it that I realized that naybe the firs piece goes into the yarn itself.
Just to put this out there, because I made a silly mistake and I suppose others might make the same: Make sure you make your slip knot the right way round. I did it the wrong way, which made it tighten when I pulled on the short end and it was nearly impossible to get past that first stitch...
@Hannat Balogun I assume you figured it out by now, but you gotta make the loop with the other end of the yarn. I don't know by heart which side, so I keep messing it up but then I can correct myself xD But like, if you make a loop with a short end and a long end (where the rest of the yarn is), you gotta put another loop through it and you can make that loop with either the long side or the short side and one of them is correct xD
@@lela5894 you can also just do the first loop with your fingers and then hook the second onto your crochet needle. It's kind of cheating, but you will be able to go on from there xD

For those struggling with the slipknot, watch at 0.5x speed. There's a point where the yarn goes to the other finger which I was missing. Very clear when slowed down
Have been crocheting for 30+ years. Great video! She shows beginners how to wrap the yarn around their little and pointer fingers! Notice that her little finger opens and closes a little bit sometimes. The little finger controls the flow of yarn to either; remain the same, slow down, or speed up. If you think you’re crocheting too loosely tighten up your little finger a bit. If you think you’re crocheting too tightly, open your little finger a bit and relax your shoulders. An indentation on your pointy finger means you’re either crocheting too tightly or your yarn is rough/scratchy.
I am young and wanted to try crochet and this video helped me sooo much!! From someone that never tried to crochet in her whole life, I struggled a lot with the slip knot and had to restart over 20 times!!
I have tried and failed several times to learn to crochet and am ecstatic that I am now looking at my first line of successful crochet stitches, all thanks to your really clear, step, by step teaching. I even managed to convert them for my being left handed. Looking forward to the next video when I'm a bit more practised. Thanks so much!
Your very welcome, I do all the beginner tutorials in left handed as well so if you check me out on youtube and type in bella coco crochet for beginners left handed they will come up in a list. Hope this helps 🙂
I've always wanted to learn how to do crochet and now i have enough time on my hands due to Covid 19 is the perfect time for me to learn . I've subscribed to your channel and will be on here everyday now so Thank You .
Started learning how to crochet today at varsity as part of a volunteer program where we make scarfs and winter hats for hospital patients and I have to say I struggled and was overwhelmed, but seeing these videos makes me more excited to continue to learn. Thank you, from South Africa.
Thank you for explaining so well and slowly! Other instructors move so fast, it's hard to track my eyes with what's happening to the yarn and hook, but you do a nice job of making sure the viewer has plenty of chance to see all of the steps.
I have wanted to learn how to crochet for ages just never gave it a try until today. Your videos and instructions are so clear. The chain was a bit of a struggle but I finally did it. Going to practice before I move on to the next step! Thank you so much x
truly, most tuts are real struggle for me bc of all the remembering I have to do but combined with the accent and instructions, I'm having a great learning experience
Just started about 10 minutes ago… this is the 2nd video I watched. The way you wrapped the yarn around your pinky and index finger helped me out a lot. Compared to just my index finger. Looking forward to watching more videos. Ready for step 2 lol.
Used to crochet some 25 years ago and as a senior trying to return to it as it is so relaxing. Your videos are to the point, explaining well and have helped me tremendously. As I have returned to renew my skills, realize how tense I am, my stiches are very tight which is presenting problems. Need to learn to chill out! Thank you for your videos.

Thank you for explaining everything so thoroughly, even the different ways of holding the hook and yarn, this was a game changer compared to other tutorials I've watched 🙏🏻
I always thought that crocheting would be hard(which it currently is for me), but it’s turning out to be a lot better and easier than I thought! My friend already knows how to crochet, and she made me something which got me into crochet. I thank her so much for that, haha. I thought I might have to watch multiple videos, but no, yours made my first experience wonderful❤
I found these videos a few years ago and they helped me and I felt confident, but due to unforeseen circumstances, I had went from an absolute beginner confident at making chains and slipnots to the beginning and struggling. I'll give it my all. Thank you for your calm voice and tutorial. Even if I can only end up making a chain, it's great to fidget with!
Quarantine got me trying all kinds of new things... One day I was just laying in bed and thought *"I wonder how hard it is to crochet..."* And here I am...
I started crochet using these Bella Coco videos, kept it up for 6 weeks or so and gave up. Revisited today and found I still remember slip knot, chain and double crochet! It has so inspired me, to see that I can remember. And this time I will keep it up! Don't give up. Thank you for these great videos x
Thank you SO much for this video! I am a knitter and wanted to learn how to crochet. I bought a learn to crochet kit that comes with video's to learn, well those videos sucked! The instructor was explaining and showing the single crochet( i am from us), but whatever she was showing, my chain was getting all twisted and looked like a tangled MESS! I was getting very frustrated and wanted to give up. Then I found your tutorial...AWESOME you made this fun for me to learn, I picked it up right away. Thank you.
Thank you!! I have had a crochet kit scene last Easter 😅 Me and my dad couldn’t get the first stitch so we gave up, and kind of forgot about it But with a video it’s WAY easier. I’m planing on getting new yarn so I can make more things!
I DID A SLIP KNOT ON THE FIRST TRY WAHOOOO THANK YOUUU IM SO EXCITED TO MOVE ON INTO THE TUT Edit 1: 42 MINS LATER, I MADE A CHAIN. GUYS I MADE A CHAIN OMG OMG SJDJKEKWQKKSKSKWO

OMG THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!! I have looked at soooo many videos soooo far and I can't get a knot until i watch this like omg i feel so much happier thank you sooo much
I have never crocheted. I started watching your videos & then actually having a go & I'm obsessed! Just made the poppy & I'm really pleased with myself. Your videos are easy to follow & I can't wait to do more. Thank 💕 you
This playlist taught me how to crochet a year ago, and I remember throwing my hook in frustration because I couldn't figure out the tension. Now I've made multiple crochet projects- a full sized blanket, multiple amigurumi, and just made my first sweater! Surprisingly, learning to crochet also helped me figure out how to knit- I had tried to learn many times, but after crochet, I felt more comfortable with the tension etc ❤ thank you for this!!
What the heck. This is so simple. Why the heck did I think it was one of the most complex things ever. I LOVE IT OMG??? New special interest unlocked, this will be so useful for doing projects with my recycled yarn. Thank you, you are amazing and have a great day.
Thanks for explaining from the absolute beginning, I’m doing bag Mats for homeless people and haven’t been able to find an instructional video that didn’t start from the middle, you totally rock chick! Thank you, I appreciate you.
This was AMAZING!!! I watched a few RUclipsrs teach how to crotchet and this by far was the easiest. I had to go over it several times and get comfortable with my middle finger and thumb holding the yarn, but I finally got the rhythm of it! This is only day 1, and I can’t wait to watch your other videos!
It can be tricky to get the hang of it at first - you need to hold onto the bottom of the slip knot as you are yarning over so it makes it easier to pull through 😊
A few years ago I tried to crochet but found it difficult but a couple of weeks ago I thought I’d give it another go and thanks to your video I can now crochet a basic square so the next step for me is a granny square, thank you for showing me how to crochet.
Hi 👋I am sorry if this sounds weird but you wrote such a nice and interesting comment on here and I like it. Obviously you are a positive person. If it’s alright with you I’d love to be friends.
To anyone reading this, it gets easier!!! I practiced tying a slip knot about 30 times. And I tried chaining 10 about 15 times. It does get easier! At first my yarn was too tight and then too loose. Then I couldn't work out how to hold the yarn. I finally got it all working smoothly... only to forget how to yarn over only a few hours later! It's now been a few days and things are becoming familiar. I've done maybe 20 minutes of practice every day and it's working! And I'm enjoying it! It needs patience but so much fun when you make progress! This video is magical, thank you soooooo much!
Omg I've nailed this class. Previously, I couldn't even do the slip knot from the step by step diagrams in booklet thingy I got with my crochet hooks. Now I'm cooking on gas. Going to my next class now. 🏃🏻♂️💨 See you all at lunch.
I'm so glad that they have been of help to you, remember that crochet is practice and patience so the more you do the easier it will get. Good luck and let me know how you get on :)
I am just starting to crochet and so i watched this video and i get so frustrated but i say to myself to never give up because i want to be a crochet pro.You are also a very great teacher at this!❤
I’ve had enough today 😂 it was hard at first but I got the hang of it! I did a few stitches then restarted then did a few more to just practice and it did help! I only just realised that I have a crochet hook that is yours! It says Bella Coco on the side!
Ik this is 8 months later, but your comment is genuinely encouraging to me. I've been having a lot of trouble and seeing all the "it was so easy" comments have really discouraged me. I'll keep practicing and try and get the hang of it too :) This is a very good video
I just found out that I am going to be a Grandma in late April 2021. So I want to start making blankets and clothes for my grandchild. Yeah!. We knitted and crocheted back when I was a girl in grade school. We made items, mainly blankets, some girls in the older grades made socks and sweaters, we sent it off to the War effort in Vietnam. I did make a few items for my children when they were babies, but that was over 45 years ago now. So I needed to brush up on the techniques. This internet and RUclips channel is really something,, it's been especially wonderful during this Global pandemic. Thankyou so much for sharing your video's here. Now on to the next stage. ✌❤🧶👍 😎🇨🇦🐈
I just want to say thank you without your channel I didn’t even think about crocheting but watching your videos and I’m one week I’m ready to crochet a scarf, I’ve ordered the wool you said to order and I’m on my way. I looked at many different channels yours was the best. Thank you so much I will be looking into your other videos on different patterns in the future ❤
Oh my goodness this was the fourth "learn to crochet" video that I tried and I was just about ready to give up as it just wasn't working for me but FINALLY IT MAKES SENSE!!!! Seems I just needed to find the right way of holding the yarn that would work for me 😊 Excited to start turning my chain into a square now ❤
Thank you for making these simple to understand, I've been trying to teach myself to crochet for more than 5yrs. I've now chained 56 and done 4rows of DC and 4 rows of TC. I'm so pleased with myself lol . 😀😀

Thank you for this video. I have 2 daughters and one is what I call my sensory child. I thought this would be fun for all of us but especially enjoyable for her. This is just what we needed to start learning. Very detailed but simple and slow enough for us to see whats going on. Thank you.
I had almost given up on not being able to crochet, but I watched this and tried wrapping the yarn the same way you do and I’m crying from relief because it’s working finally! Thank you for taking the time to teach others this beautiful craft!
Thank you so much! This video was great, I was always so frustrated because I couldn’t figure out how to hold the yarn and hook comfortably and in control. This really helped!
I'm not getting past the slip knot - every time I try to yarn over, the slip knot goes so tight, I can't get my yarn through it. You make it look so simple, but for me it's a nightmare! (absolute, and I mean ABSOLUTE beginner and 62 year old bloke to add to that!!!) Just fancied trying something different...
It sounds as though your tension is too tight - it's just a case of keeping the slip knot fairly loose and not tightening it too much, and also using your thumb and middle finger to hold the base of the chain and pull down slightly as you make the chain stitches (you can see how I do this in the video). Other than that it really is just a case of practise makes perfect and I'm sure you'll get there in the end. Well done for trying a new skill! Good luck! 🙂
@@bellacococrochet Thank you - getting the hang of the slip knot by holding it now! This all started with my wife having to knit poppies for her WI group. I am young and wanted to try crochet and this video helped me sooo much!! From someone that never tried to crochet in her whole life, I struggled a lot with the slip knot and had to restart over 20 times!!
You have to remember that crochet is practice and patience, the more you try the easier it will get. Good luck :)

Have been a knitter for many years, giving crocheting a go, Bella s a fantastic teacher! Spring 2024
Ahh thank you so much :)

You are very welcome :)
Thank you for explaining so well and slowly! Other instructors move so fast, it's hard to track my eyes with what's happening to the yarn and hook, but you do a nice job of making sure the viewer has plenty of chance to see all of the steps.
You're very welcome :)

I have wanted to learn how to crochet for ages just never gave it a try until today. Your videos and instructions are so clear. The chain was a bit of a struggle but I finally did it. Going to practice before I move on to the next step! Thank you so much x
You are very welcome and remember that crochet is practice and patience so the more you do the easier it will become :)
I love how simple and straight forward this is! It isn't overwhelming at all!!
truly, most tuts are real struggle for me bc of all the remembering I have to do but combined with the accent and instructions, I'm having a great learning experience

Oh boy I've learned from so many people how to do a slip knot and I could never get it to stick. And then here comes you with THE SIMPLEST METHOD EVER!!! Thank you so much❤

I'm so glad that it has been of help to you :)
Please remember that the more you do the easier it will become so don't give up keep trying - good luck :)

You are very welcome :)
Thank you.
You are very welcome and well done for not giving up :)
The fact that everyone else seems to be dying over this is somewhat comforting
Thank you!! I have had a crochet kit scene last Easter 😅
Me and my dad couldn’t get the first stitch so we gave up, and kind of forgot about it
But with a video it’s WAY easier. I’m planing on getting new yarn so I can make more things!

You're welcome :)
The tutorial was very easy to follow! I spent 3 days trying to do a chain stitch but i did it successfully after watching this video once!
Glad it helped, good luck with your crochet journey :)
What the heck. This is so simple. Why the heck did I think it was one of the most complex things ever. I LOVE IT OMG??? New special interest unlocked, this will be so useful for doing projects with my recycled yarn. Thank you, you are amazing and have a great day.

Hi, was wondering if u could show us how u made those bag mats. Would be interested in doing the same thing :)
I'm glad it was helpful and well done for not giving up :)
I cant even get the first stitch my yarn womt go through the slipnot it just slides to the top of the hook :((
It can be tricky to get the hang of it at first - you need to hold onto the bottom of the slip knot as you are yarning over so it makes it easier to pull through 😊

You are very welcome :)

You are very welcome :)
Thank you so much! This video was great, I was always so frustrated because I couldn’t figure out how to hold the yarn and hook comfortably and in control. This really helped!
You're very welcome :)
This is a first for me but it's never too late to learn (I'm a senior citizen). Okay! I need to get some wool and a hook! I'll be back soon!
I had this idea of crotcheting some, so I found your Poppy Tutorial vid... I've managed the 4 chains and a loop through the first stitch (about 25 times so far) then it all goes to pot... :D
