I have been crocheting for 55 years and I teach kids how to crochet, and have taught these tips to each of them. I will make this part of the teaching thank you.
THANK YOU!!! You answered so many questions that plague me. I'm 67 years old. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was six. I can chain and know my basic stitches, but I was never taught the proper basic technique. You are my crocheting hero. Keep up the excellent work ❤️❤️❤️
I’m 78 and my grandmother taught me when I was seven. Very basic stuff but I love it, and now I’m making a wall hanging. Very fun because I’m using all kinds of yarn and stitches.
I always either start the second row by putting the hook in the single stitch behind the two front stitches or putting the hook under the two front stitches for a smoother look to the next row depending on what I am making. I am 84 years old and have been crocheting since I was about 10 years old. I especially make doilies and have patterns that were my mother's and her mother's. I also knit and was taught that by my grandmother when I was pregnant with my first child so I could make my new baby sweaters. I am now knitting scrubbys with the scrubby yarn for my friends. To me, doing these things are very relaxing and enjoyable!
OMG every hat pattern or tutorial I've followed turned out absolutely ginormous because I never knew not to crochet into that one loop before the last row!! I swear this is the 1st time I've seen someone MENTION that loop THANK YOU SO MUCH
I JUST DID A HAT AND UNRAVELED IT BECAUSW IT WAS SO HUGE AFTER FOLLOWING EVERYTHING FROM THE TUTORIAL! THIS MIGHT HAVE BEEN WHAT I WAS DOING WROMG OMG!
Can I just say, the colors of yarn you use and your non shinny slightly textured background is perfect. You can see your work so well and I just want to say thank you for that.
2/26/22 - this video just came up in my feed for viewing. It’s an excellent teaching for beginners and even for the more advanced for review. There’s not a tip in the video that I haven’t had issues with. I would recommend this to anyone trying to learn. Very good video. Thank you
I’ve been crocheting for about 6 years and I’ve never really understood which stitch I’m supposed to join in the round. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and for clearly demonstrating exactly which spot to skip and where to join. I never knew this and somehow I made the stitch count work whilst making this mistake. I see that this video was posted 3 years ago so I hope you will see my comment. It appears that you have a website which I will attempt to find. Happy new year for 2023!
Very helpful. My mother taught me to crochet as a teen, but never made anything more than a granny square. Then after several years I made beanies for my grandchildren and loved it!! They weren't perfect but I tried and gave up because my projects would lose their shape, twist, turn, etc. But the urge to start up again is always on my mind so I'm going to give it another shot after watching your tips! Wish me luck!!
a great way to keep your project straight is to put a stitch marker in the first stitch of a row right after you start that row. When you get to the end of the row you will have the stitch marker from the prior row as your stopping spot. It also helps if the stitches are a bit tight to get your hook into that last stitch. Works as well if your are chaining up, when you chain your 3 chains put the stitch marker in that last chain.
Im 88 yrs tsught crohet by my gran kniiting by mum and crochet, and threading andxwatching others have picked up a lot of tips and many much better than was taught. Im enjoying it still id be completely lost if i didnt do either of them. I love doing both kniitng a csrdufan and a sweater, us a blanket on the go.when these are done not much on either left to do.then Im concentrating on making things for my first great grandchild due in April.. never get bored of making things. I get excited when I start sonething new. Happy crafting x
What a great video! I have been crocheting for about 8 years, and am self taught. I have always been confused when chaining and joining to make a circle. I definitely learned something new and will now have an easier time do that. Somehow I’ve made it work, but I have never really been happy with the results. Also the information on weaving in the ends was great. I have always felt people often gloss over that part, especially for someone who doesn’t know anyone in person that crochets to learn from. This is such a wonderful resource!
Those end. Yarns strands can really be ugly! Leave a little extra ,I leave at least ten inches most times to make sure that end is in there secure NEVER EVER TO BE SEEN AGAIN,LOL THOSE CAN MAKE u mad after The finished work. U can always clip off what u don't need or use ,but hide that (((((sucker)))) ))in your work' or later it will show up to piss u off lol 😂😆😂😆😂😆
I’m a 40 gap year crocheted. My grandma taught me when I was very young. Help me remember why you don’t cut the yarn instead of weaving it in? My grandma used to make me and my dog or doll matching ponchos. She taught me doilies and blankets, I didn’t stick with it , but I’m picking it up again 40 years later.

E'Claire, you are such a good teacher! Thanks for all the tips. Even as someone who has been crocheting all my life, then picked it up again two years ago in earnest, these tips are very helpful!
I was taught by grandma how to follow along. Now that I'm the grandma, I'm trying to learn proper Crochet and I found this Video most helpful. Thank you very much. 😺👏🏼
Thank you so much for the information you've provided in this video! I have had so much trouble figuring out which chain to start with after turning and finding the last stitch before turning my work. You've given me confidence to keep practicing my crochet!
Oh my gosh this was the most helpful beginner video I've seen and I have been trying for a month to really get solid at this and you helped with all of the things that were really keeping me stuck! Thank you SO much!
Thank you! First tip explained my problem... and why I was one stitch short on the base chain when I was ending row 2 and there were no remaining stitches to work with. I must have recounted 15 times (400 total stitches so far).
I've been working on a dog sweater, my first ever, for weeks and keep having problems with increasing stitches, which I don't want to do. Your video cleared up that mistake ! Thank you for showing us all these tips. Maybe she will get to wear the sweater next winter as it is already March.
Well! There’s always room for improvement. I’ve been crocheting for 44 years. I’m halfway through the video and I’ve learned how to weave ends in properly and how to join in the round!
Wow, thank you so much. I am just starting and I think it is really helpful to know that it is okay to make mistakes. I didn't realize the amount of patience that is needed to crochet.
Thank goodness for your video! My problem, and it was a big one, was #2 on your list. The pieces I made looked like they were arm openings on a sewing pattern. I gave them to our kitties and they took to them immediately so they weren't a waste.
Really awesome! I learned years ago from my grandmother. She only knew one stitch. I made a blanket of squares. I have been dog paddling along on my own, making many of the mistakes you explained. Many wonky projects, much frustration and slow progress. I love your simple explanations. Thank you so much!
Very helpful for beginners. Wish I had seen this when I first started crocheting. Even though I am not a complete starter still glad I watched this to reinforce my knowledge and skills.
When a pattern says: sk 3 sc, dc in next 4 sc When you sk stitches, are you starting the next stitch in the 3rd ch OR do make your next stitch in the fourth ch (when you skip 3sc) that is my problem area. Please help.
Goodness you are a fantastic instructor! I wish I had found you in the beginning! I’m really a beginner ?, , crocheting about a year and have gotten along nicely. your tutorial helped me with a certain problem I have had and where to put that stitch in the round. You were so precise that I now realize my mistake. Thank you and keep up the good work. I’m going to send your tutorials to all my newbie friends.
I predominantly make amigurumi, so the last tip is more "mileage may vary" for me. I often use bigger yarn and hooks than the original patterns call for, but that's because I WANT bigger end results. I will still follow the instructions rigorously! Awesome video!
I really appreciated the tip about following the instructions on what hook and yarn to use. I am very much a beginner, and it's helpful to know the importance of sticking with the appropriate yarn weight and hook size that is listed for a project in order to get the result that you want. Thank you!
I really enjoyed this tutorial. I started crochet again after 40 year gap. My last project was a GS poncho for my daughter in the 70s . It’s like riding a bicycle-it all comes back. However your tips remind you where to really pay attention while getting back in stride. Thanks so much plus subbed.
I am so grateful for this. I crocheted years ago and wanted to start again. I got frustrated and gave up as I could not tell what the first chain stitch was!
Thank you for this video. ❤️ very helpful. My grandmother taught me to crochet/sew during summer visits when I was 7 yrs old. I must have been a very patient little girl & her a patient teacher. she made beautiful blankets for the church. Those memories with her have stayed with me all my life.
Thank you so much for explaining gauge. I have been struggling with this. I also didn't understand how to weave in the ends. You were a tremendous help with that.
Thank you! Semi beginner. Started when I was just round 6. My mother and both grandmothers taught me. However, it's not something I had enough interest in, until now. I know some minor fundamental things. Your video taught me many things I've been doing wrong, and the light bulb came on. Well, I thought, these explain a lot of my frustrations. Lol, so thank you!!
Thank you so much for sharing these tutorials to help beginners to crochet. Our craft class makes lap quilts for the veterans hospital in lake city, Florida. We also make hats for cancer patients that have lost their hair from chemo and radiation. We also donate variety of cards for the people to send a card to family and friends. We donate toiletries, socks dollar tree finds. I really feel blessed to help out this way. I am still in the early stage of learning to crochet. We also buy twin size blankets that have the blanket stitching on them. We crochet a border around them to personalize them. I had a navy blue blanket and used white yarn for first rows then I finished with red yarn. So pretty. If you know any people that would like to do any of these projects to just get in touch with the local veterans organization . Thanks for sharing your talents to help others. Have a blessed rest of the year and the year to come. Be well. Hopefully the virus will be a thing of the past.
thank you. I never get my edges right and I get irritated because I thought it was the yarn s problem . I am watching you and listening to you and Now I will have to start over again Thank you, l will watch and listen you . thank you again.
Do a bunch of test squares and relax as you do them. It’s the same as when you learned to write as a kid, it’s starts out kind of messy and then gets better. I think I did about 20 test squares in all sorts of different stitches for practice. I unravelled the lot of them and reused the yarn so nothing was wasted. Enjoy the process, its fun.
You remind me of my first project 40 years ago it was a scarf. I kind of wish I would have kept it. It was so uneven on the sides are go in and out in and out and it was so long. Good tips.
A great video ...Very helpful! I'm self taught to begin with, and now I'm getting back into crochet after several years away. I wasn't sure I even could still crochet. These awesome tips are invaluable to me. It made getting back into crochet all the easier. This video was a blessing, thanks so much for sharing.
...and GOOD LIGHTING, AND ZOOM FOCUS & CONTROL!!! SOME VIDEOS ARE IMPOSSIBLE TO SEE AND FOLLOW ALONG!!!!! BRAVO! IT MAKES A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE FOR BEGINNERS.... ....
THANK YOU SO.MUCH. I taught myself and have made many projects but they were not " perfect " they looked great but was often unsure and not confident about ALL of these 😆 🤣 I appreciate you making this SO much!! I feel so much more confident and so grateful I dont have " guess" now . Thank you SO much ❤
Hello! Thank You! I found your video quite helpful. I just started this and still have to hold my needle right . I have been knitting and looming these past couple of years. I will be looking closer at the labels now. It really is enjoyable to sit watch T.V. and keep your hands busy. The other thing I like about crochet , knitting and looming is you can take it with you!!
Awesome video. I am an experienced Crocheter but I always enjoy this type of Tutorial as a refresher or learn a new tip. I'm trying to teach my sister who lives 4 hours away from me to crochet virtually & she is struggling with her ends. I have sent this to her to help her learn. Thanks so much!!
Your videos are invaluable to me!!! So much info to make my life easier. That said, Re using the right yarn and hook size fora pattern; I just LOVE mixing this up. I almost always use the wrong yarn for a pattern and it often means some ripping it out and it always means extra math and a lot of measuring as I go to find the right count 🤣. I almost always use the right hook size for the yarn, maybe one size up or down but crocheting with a hook that is too small is murder. Really I usually just make up my own pattens anyway. Your tips are still so helpful I watch them over and over. Thank you!!!
As a beginner/intermediate crocheter, I learned so much from this video! When it comes to the piece you're working on getting wider at the top (or even narrower), you talked about adding/skipping stitches as being a culprit. One thing that I found with my own projects when I was first learning crochet is that I wasn't aware enough of keeping a consistent tension. So as my hands would tighten, my rows would shrink, whereas if I tried to ease the tension by loosening my fingers, my rows would inevitably start growing. You brought up the importance of maintaining consistent tension later in the vid, but I was so smitten by the pink hook you were using, I had to restart that section so that I could pay attention to what you were saying lol. I love the color and shape of it! If you ever happen to read this comment, I'd love it if you would respond and tell me what hook that is (24:30). Is it a Furl, or something similar? If it's a furl it's sadly out of my budget, but hey, a girl can dream! Thank you for a fantastic crochet tips video. I'm now a subscriber, and can't wait to watch more of your vids. Thanks again!
Omg thank you soooooo much for your video . Im new to Crotcheting. I made some mistakes ... And you come along with video and given me insight THANK YOU
i'm so glad i am seeing this video because i have been having the issue of not keeping it straight when doing blankets. thanks for keeping this video up.
Also, the section about weaving in ends is very important for a reason some don't know. If your pet swallows a piece of thread, it may cause a serious problem for them. My cat swallowed a thread about 2 inches long. My vet explained to me how serious that could be and may even result in surgery. That was an eye opener for me. I always thought the stomach acids would dissolve the thread. Not so. If the thread gets wrapped around the internal plumbing, surgery is called for. I have been much more careful since I learned that.
Thank you all your tips were great.yes I'm one that after diong a chain didn't know what stitch but by you showing it laid down I could see it clearly.i used to poke my hook in near to the loop so now I will not make that mista
Thank you for sharing, I am not a beginner but I wanted to see how to teach some one like my daughter or my grands - this will help know what to focus on👍🏻 or share your video 💖💫✨🌟❣️
I’m just wondering, when you’re starting a row or round on a chain foundation, why you only grab the top (or single) loop of the chain stitch with your hook. That first row needs a little more stability. I always grab the top 2 loops. If anyone is wondering about the single loop left at the bottom, for an afghan, for example that is taken care of with the decorative border. I agree totally with your explanation of tension! Please everyone pay attention to this. 😊
The problem with doing that is that then you only leave one thread as the base, which makes it more knobbly and it isn't a solid base for your piece, especially if you're going to add edging to your piece - then you're going to end up doing the edging with a single thread, which is less firm. If you pick up a single thread for the base and make sure not to stretch the chain, it leaves a row of chain stitches at the bottom of your piece, which is much prettier. That's why many people prefer to do their first row into the back bump of the foundation chain - the back bump is less weak than a side thread of the chain. Personally, I prefer to start with a single, half double or double crochet foundation chain, which is both stronger and helps you evaluate the true length of your piece much better from the word go.
She is teaching mostly beginner crocheheters and foundation sc or dc is not easy for a beginner. This is a very good tutorial for beginners and as for going under only one loop in the chain stitches, I also prefer the back bump, but the best teachers I've watched, when not using the back bump, all go under only one loop. In my opinion, I would say, do what works best for you, just be consistent. Thank you for this video. It was good to be reminded not to work into the loop before the joining when working in the round.
You are such an amazing teacher! I've been crocheting for years and I still found this useful! On a side note, I love your hook! Where did you get that or what brand is it?
One of the most important things I teach new crocheters is to COUNT your stitches. Even after crocheting for 40 years I still count my stitches.
Yeah I dont & my stuff is lopsided
Yes, I keep forgetting and ending up in big trouble 😅
😂😂 my partner comes to see if I'm ok because he doesn't hear me counting...
If I can I use stitch markers. Less intense for my brain.
@@amara560 yes that's such a great tip! I use a scrap piece of wool :)
Thank you I have been crocheting for 62 years and I learned today several of my mistakes 😊

howd it go?
a great way to keep your project straight is to put a stitch marker in the first stitch of a row right after you start that row. When you get to the end of the row you will have the stitch marker from the prior row as your stopping spot. It also helps if the stitches are a bit tight to get your hook into that last stitch. Works as well if your are chaining up, when you chain your 3 chains put the stitch marker in that last chain.

I am so grateful for this. I crocheted years ago and wanted to start again. I got frustrated and gave up as I could not tell what the first chain stitch was!

Good tips.
Thank heaven for RUclips. Very useful tutorial .... Even for me who:s been crocheting almost 50 years.

You are so thorough. Thanks 🙏
Thank you very much as I was always having problems with the edges. You have helped me how to keep edges straight.
Very informative video. I struggle with all these problems crocheting. I usually knit. Knitting is my first choice of craft but crochet is pretty.
Me too! But I’m committed to trying to make a couple of simple crocheted projects. For me crocheting seems more complicated than knitting!
I'm a beginner and have watched a zillion videos yours is the absolute best. Thank you😊
Great tips! Thank you for using a yarn color that is easy to see your stitches too.
...and GOOD LIGHTING, AND ZOOM FOCUS & CONTROL!!!
Very informative. I've been crocheting for over 40 yrs and didn't know every one of these.
Thank you so much for this tutorial!. My son suggested a twist to weaving in the ends: zig-zag a bit, then go backward, skipping the first stitch.
Aww, I’m so glad they are helpful to you!
Excellent and extremely helpful, great video
This is an excellent tutorial. You are a very good teacher and I sure have enjoyed it ❤
Great video! I’m 49 and just learning. This was perfect! Would you do a video on weight of yarn (worsted, etc)? Keep up the good work! 🙂
I just love how you use “ingredients” and “recipe”!! ❤️
I just found your channel, now I'm a new subscriber, thank you for being so thorough!!
Thank you so much for this video, as I am new to crocheting and have made these same Mistakes! Very helpful!!!!!!

When I weave ends in I go through a yarn which splits it and it always stays secure
I always pick up two, as well, it worries me when your cast on rows hang like garlands under my work, even if I’m going to put fringe on.
Absolutely Love Your Tutorial!!!!! Many Thanks:).
Thank you for the video! I’ve never used a pattern, so this will help tremendously!!
You are such an amazing teacher! I've been crocheting for years and I still found this useful! On a side note, I love your hook! Where did you get that or what brand is it?
I’m making a star blanket and it was becoming a bowl, turns out I was crocheting too tightly so I get went back a few layers and re did it!
Very good explaining I’m a crocheted for or 57 years well done
Great tutorial. Even an experienced crocheter learns new things.
Excellent information for experienced crocheters as well. Thank you!
Very useful video! A big thank you!❤
