I've been doing chainless foundation for years (I've been crocheting for 45 years) and one thing I do is use a hook one size larger than what I will be using for the rest of the project. This helps keep the foundation from drawing in and it looks neater. I learned to crochet from my aunt back in the late 70's when I was 14 and she was a genius for figuring out shortcuts and tricks to maker her crochet look great.
@@bettyboehm436It's her 3rd tip, she shows how to do it. But it's usually just called a "Foundation Chain". The word "chainless" really doesn't make sense because of course you're making a chain. The other way is to do a regular crochet chain to start your project.
Happy 50th! Fifties are fabulous years - enjoy! (One of the biggest gifts of life after 50 is that it’s official: You don’t have to give a flip about what other people think or what you’re “supposed to” do or wear or think. Turns out, other people don’t really care and most don’t even notice. What a relief. Life after 50 is more relaxed and you can really savor all the marvelous & magical little things in life.) Love your collab with Toni! You’re two of my favorite crochet goddesses. Many thanks!
Chainless foundation is ALWAYS my go-to when it's just a case of chaining and then the next row is simple sc, hdc, dc or tc crochets. I learned that 4 years ago and haven't looked back, lol.
foundation crochet is the technique i never came back from. especially for large projects like blankets, that frustrating first chain and row are now just one slightly frustrating row, and you're ready to get crankin'.
That orange on you absolutely pops! Orange was my mother’s favorite color; she only decorated with it because she didn’t think it looked good on her. She would love it on you!
Every Saturday morning I wake up, settle with my crochet and fur baby on the couch, and check your channel and Tony’s channel. I spend Saturday mornings with the two of you. This is the crossover of my dreams!!! Thank you - I can’t wait to watch!!!
As a new crocheter, I have struggled with sewing squares together without pulling some of the stitches too tight and getting an uneven join. I am so excited to try the invisible stitching. Thank you to all experienced crocheters who share these super helpful tips! You are invaluable to us newbies ❤
I do the foundation sc or dc for baby blankets. Not only is it bit stretchy but the first row of an edging pattern is better at the bottom end. Your exuberance is infectious. 😄
Ty ty ty Elise! The tip about the chaining was the best tip ever in helping me with my tension with my projects! It was driving me bonkers! I absolutely love both you and @TLYarnCarfts ♥
Love the chain less foundation chain. I'm going to try it for sure. I usually do the chain with a size larger hook, but your hint is so much better. Thank you!
I do the chainless foundation sometimes. I like it with color changing yarn, because it makes it look more even. It takes longer though, for me anyway, so usually, I just, make my chain with a hook that's a half a size bigger.
I looove this book!! I am fairly new to crochet but was getting discouraged. No matter how hard I tried, my projects looked awful. There were so many tips in the book that applied to me!! I'm now proud to show off my projects!!
I made that foundation chain for the first time recently for a baby blanket. It’s a great, stretchy foundation chain but it took me forever to get across! Practice will probably make it speed up I guess. Otherwise, I need to use a size larger hook for the foundation chain to avoid the dreaded trapezoid! That mattress joining stitch is magical. I made a granny square sweater and joined them that way. Worked great! Thanks, Elise. Oh, and I love the gradient greens of your granny squares! New color scheme unlocked. 😊🧶💕
Yes. I like to use Scheepjes Soft Fun yarn which is cotton with 40% acrylic, making it softer and a little bit stretchy. Nice yarn. Thanks for the tips.
That orange top you're wearing ! I love it ! The detail under the yoke...the print...the color...& very flattering on you, Elise. 🧡 Your hair looks terrific. I'll be trying some of these tips...so thank you!
I just received “ CROCHET SECRETS” book. THANK YOU for sharing that video and all the others that you create. You are such a beautiful person to watch.
Oh, dang. I need to get myself a new job where I'm off on weekends. I've been super excited to see two of ky three favorite crochet channels working together to hype up this book, but now in the comments I'm learning that if i just have Saturdays off i can appreciate both of your fresh drops so much sooner? Thanks for reinvigorating my love of the craft. My grandma taught me, but she is no longer here. She would have loved both you and Toni for how you both bring fresh excitement to a well aged crafting tradition.

Hi Elise! Great tips. I always do the fsc, fdc, etc. it’s the way I start every project unless otherwise stated in pattern. This definitely is a must need book. Thank you. Love your channel and Toni’s too

After near to 40 years of crocheting I learned foundation stitches approximately 1-1/2 years ago and it's a game changer. I am amazed that there are still there are tutorials whereby they do not like to do foundation stitches. Foundation stitches are also easier to count. Thank you for sharing these hints with us. I truly want to thank you. Lastly, you absolutely DON'T look like you are about 50. You look like you are turning 38 at most.
Hi Elise Just wanted to say I Love these tips and will be using them like you from Now on .... I also wanted to say that you look So Pretty in the color of your Blouse that is your Color ... Happy Crocheting !!!!🙂
Omg this looks like a fantastic book, ta heaps for sharing it and some great tips. I will b sure to try. Plus I will definitely b getting this book. I make a lot of cotton dish clothes and the first row was always so difficult and hurt my hands. Making the rest of the dish cloth was fine, but that first row was tough. Oh Elise, that was a great, great video!!!! Thank you so much. Can't wait for your next video and happy early 50th birthday you young one, you. You look very young. 💖🎂
I saw Toni’s too. That book is being referenced in so many places! I have to get it-although I think I do most everything in it-not to brag or anything. 😊 thanks for the tip on the Comfy yarn. I know that company makes many great yarns.
I had seen the invisible join on BOD. I am planning on using it on my Starburst Granny I am working on now! Not only does it look simple enough, its’ results are GREAT! I enjoy your channel very much. You absolutely do not look 50 and your complexion is amazing!! ❤🧶
I need this book. People keep showing me how to keep the chain from being twisted but they don’t tell me which loop of the first stitch to insert my hook. My chain always ends up twisting 90-180 degrees but you can’t tell until the first row is done. That diagram looked so detailed.
As I tell all my high school friends, and I mean this in the most loving way, welcome to the Old Fogey Club! (I turned 50 this past November) All jokes aside, fantastic video as always!
Just found you, I am so pleased to receive those great tips! Just placed my order for the book for my daughters Christmas, of course I might to have a wee look first 😊❤
I just made an oval granny stitch motif ( by trial and error)☺️ and also a corner motif granny stitch to fill in the outside edges. Because with the oval motif, it seems you can just keep adding more and more motifs, and never have a good place to stop adding. But I kept making them and ripping them out till I got it perfected. I am so excited to finally have completed a flat decent motif, because I searched everywhere to find a tutorial for an oval granny stitch and they are nowhere to be found.
I started using the chainless foundation for when I split for the sleeves in a raglan sweater. I've always found it hard and unforgiving to crochet into the chain that is made under the arm. I started doing the chainless foundation stitch across that area and it's made a world of difference in the ease of continuing the garment as well as the fit feeing better because it's stretchy in that sensitive area.
I hope you don't mind if I comment about each of the tips you mention. Tip #1 I have used, but in a different way, so I guess this is an extension of this tip. This works especially well if you have a long chain to join. What I do, is as soon as I can put that first chain back on my hook, I do so - even if I haven't finished chaining. For example, if I'm crocheting a hat from the bottom up, I will chain the first 10 chains, take the working loop off, put my crochet hook through the first chain, then put the working loop back on my hook to chain the rest of my chains. Tip #2 I've used the chainless foundation before, and I will admit, I'm not that fond of it. I will use it for somethings, but I have a hard time figuring out how to use it in the round, for example. Here are a couple of other tips you can use if you don't like the chainless foundation. 1. Use the next hook size up for your foundation chain, especially when using smaller hook sizes. 2. This one may take a little more time, but it works. Most crochet hooks (even the ergonomic ones) have a wider shaft at some point. When I make a foundation chain, I always make sure I slide the working loop onto that wider part of the shaft before I make my next chain. This makes the chain slightly bigger and gives you the space you need so that your foundation chain isn't too tight. Tip #3 I've used this tip once or twice. The cool thing about it is, using the tails of the granny squares (or whatever you are crocheting) as the joining yarn. It basically 'kills 2 birds with one stone'. First, you are joining your project together, and second, you are weaving in your ends as you go. Of course, sometimes you WANT your joins to be seen, they become part of the pattern, but if you don't, the mattress join works REALLY well! The last two tips, I can't really comment on, because I've never made amigurumi, although there are a few projects I've been wanting to try. I just never got around to it. Again, I hope no one minds that I've added my 2 cents to these tips, I just figured that everyone loves options, because while most tips will work for many, they don't always work for all.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on them!! I left a long tail with the granny square and used it for joining! I totally agree that it is a great way to accomplish that! 🧶🪡❤️
Love these tips, and looooooove that we could collab, Elise. You're the best 🙂
This was so much fun, Toni!! ❤️❤️❤️

That's so interesting because when I do foundation chains they are waaaay too stretchy, I have to go down hook size or two

I just realized we are doing the same thing, I just read your comment wrong.
I usually don't use foundation chains though because they're so stretchy.

Oh wow!!! I don't think I've ever heard of an oval granny!!! You have amazing perseverance!! 👏👏👏
@@EliseRoseCrochet I have tried to post it on my community channel area but yt will not load it for me. Not sure why, it used to.
I just recieved my book and I love it!!!
Very cool! Thanks for sharing. ❤
Thanks for watching! ❤️
Oh I need that book! I'm running over to see what Toni has to share..:)
Wonderful!!! Her video is fantastic!! ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you for sharing!! Great tip!! 🧶🧶🧶
omg... the first one is going to be so helpful
Fabulous Video!!! Thank you!!!
Thank you, Michele!! ❤️❤️❤️
