@4:40 It's actually the body that is different. Part No. 45 on the new reel, Part No 44 on the old reel. Compare the parts sheets, they are different part numbers. The new body is made from Zaion-V material versus their older Carbon Lite material. The material itself is both lighter and stronger, but also the new body has a thicker handle section. The two together were redesigned to eliminate the handle flex that was a major complaint with the old version. Other than that all the parts are exactly the same and interchangeable. Just the main body was the change.
Thanks for the comment! You know after using the 2021 version for 2 seasons I don't think the upgrade is an actual upgrade on the 2500/3000 size. I actually like the 2017 color better. I'm sure guys who fish 4000/5000 size would appreciate the Zaion V upgrade. I mean I caught close to 30lb pike on these older LT reels never felt the flex.
@@TTangOutdoors Ya, I'm with you on that. I like the new Zaion V body for the lighter weight and increase in handle rigidity, but why they went with that ugly blue color I don't know... They actually have 2 versions of the 2020 redesign with the new upgraded body. Europe got a really classy looking black and gold version similar to the 2017 model (slightly darker gold, looks great) that also has an extra bearing under the spool, but called "Legalis LT". North America for whatever reason got the ugly blue modded version without that extra bearing, and a completely different spool, and confusingly also called "Legalis LT". But they are different versions of the same reel for the 2 markets. No idea why they do that. It's a great reel either way, but I would 100% prefer the European version. If shipping wasn't so expensive I'd have ordered that instead of getting the ugly N/A version from Cabelas on sale for $74.99.
You sure the European version has a spool bearing too? I just checked daiwa France website and it's 5+1 which is the same as NA legalis. I got a couple 2021 Daiwa Fuego CS(Zaion V), the color is so fire I love it. Do you know that you can get the CDM version of the Zaion V legalis from Aliexpress? It's called Legalis CS. Lots of Aliexpress stores don't charge shipping. I've bought quite a few reels from Ali.
*Bought a 500 for an ultralight rod. It's very smooth **enjoyable.fishing** recommend casts great. One odd thing- the bale wire is a bit heavy diameter in my opinion for a reel of this size. But a great purchase.*
A 500 size for Daiwa LT? I thought the smallest size is 1000. Yea the thick bail wire could be a little big for that size of reel. But I prefer it over Shimano thin weak bail. Thanks for watching!
I like the colors of the new one. I bought three in 2500, and 3000. Usually buy the Stradic Ci4 but they are constantly out of stock and their replacement the Vanford as well. These Daiwa Legalis are way better than I thought they would be.
Nice I'm thinking about returning my 3000 and get a 2500. I simply don't need that big of a spool. Yea they are low stock everywhere. Hopefully restock coming soon.
I saw another video on this and they demonstrated that Daiwa had also widened the stem where it meets the reel body. This is visible looking at it from the front or from behind. No difference was visible from the side. That plus the new frame material has solved the flex problem. I would say the rear cap having that gap and a slight angle change also contributes to strengthening the stem.
Great observation Duane! Was it i_fish RUclips channel you watched where he talked about stem thickness? Daiwa listened to the consumers and yes my initial thought on the new back plate is the same as yours. I think it does help with the rigidity of the stem.
Thanks for the review. I just bought the 2500 XH (high speed version) from Salt Strong. Haven't tried yet but should put it to the test soon on sheepshead and trout!
No problem Jim and thank you for watching. I think you meant 2500-XH model. Salt Strong is pretty big on Daiwa reels, I watched most of their reel reviews. You're gonna love it. It's so smooth and light. Have you heard of the new 2021 Daiwa Fuego LT? I will be doing a review video of it. There's no legit English review of it yet.

I have the 2500 size Legalis mainly used for fresh water walleye and pike fishing. Not sure how it'll hold up in the salt. The drag is powerful I think I will handle salt water fish well. I'd get the Daiwa Fuego just because it has water resistance.
Thanks for the video. I have been looking video that covers 2020 Fuego vs 2017 Fuego because i fish salt water, but i couldnt fine any. Thanks to you, now i know the main difference which is the more rigid and lighter body on 2020 model. I do feel some flex on the stem when fighting bigger species or when using heavier sinker on the 2017 model. So 2020 model has an improvement on this department.
Yep you got that right buddy. The upgrade in the new fuego is the same as in the new legalis. I'm curious what size fuego you used to feel the flex? I used 2500 and 3000 and didn't feel much flex, I'm sure it exists. You're welcome, I'm glad this video is reaching lots and provides answer to a lot of us.
The frame and side plates and rotors on the new model and older. Are made of a carbon composite material. Not zaion . The daiwa proycon lt line is the first group of reels to offer the zaion material. And the original proycon lt have been discontinued. But are still available. Next reel to offer the zaion material is the daiwa tatula lt .
I mean Zaion is still carbon composite just denser carbon strands. Zaion V has more carbon than the DS5 carbon composite material used on the 2017 legalis LT.
Hey good review on this 21 Legalis LT here but let me ask you something when fishing this (Newer Version) does it feel more Rigid (less flex) with this newer (Zion V) Material would you say? and also about the (Folding Handle) that right hand side (Cap Screw) does it loosen up while fishing or remain tight?....Thx, JD
Hi Joe, thanks for asking. I don't feel felx on either new or old material.... so I can't really tell you. I actually fished both reels. The handle screw cap does turn with he handle but I didn't notice it loosen up.
The New Legalis kept the anti-reverse switch, so if you like back-reeling it is still an option. (To me, it's just 1 more entrance for water to get in the gears)
I use this switch whenever I over reel and have to back off just a little to position the bail to open and make my next cast. Also when I wind the bait up all the way to the rod tip accidentally. It’s just convenient for me. I suppose it’s possible to just pull the line out against the drag a bit instead, but that might mean backing the drag off to do it.
Awesome review. Im glad you checked the stem flex and compared the weights, interchangeable butt plate and handleknob play. Alot of the same items i compare. You should do more reviews.

Hey bro, I'm curious, what are those plastic washers that come inside the box used for/how do I use em or do I need to add them to my new reel because I just received my 2021 Legalis 4000D-C.
Those are the same washer on the main shaft above the drag clicker. If you add a washer your line lay will lay heavy towards the bottom of the spool. If you remove a washer it will lay line more top heavy. Usually you don't need to add or remove as the line lay should be good out of the box.
No problem and you're very welcome. I learned a lot from RUclips. Glad I'm able to help. And enjoy your reel buddy! Out of the box these Daiwa reels tend to lay line a little heavy towards the top. That's normal.
Nice video man!!! You are slowly turning me into a Daiwa fan boy also. Lol. I think the new back plate is probably for lighter weight? Or somewhere to hang your reel up? (Jk. Lol). Love the t handle, won't be having sore thumb with that! However I think I like the black and gold color of the old one better... I don't know.. haha.. blue is growing on me tho.
I just love the fact that Daiwa keeps competing with Shimano with innovation every year. The back plate is light plastic so they barely contribute to the total weight. Hey, you can definitely hang it somewhere haha, great idea. I love the black and gold, but they are hard to find on the market now. I will probably return the blue and get a 2500 size, spool way too deep.
