Why Apple Removed iPhone's Battery Percentage
HTML-код

- In 2017, Apple released iPhone X. The most dramatic update to iPhone since the original. Although it took away a convenient feature that the device previously had; the battery percentage. It used to be viewable directly from the menu bar. But with iPhone X, it was moved to control center. Requiring a swipe down just to see the state of charge. Many felt this was a step backward, so why did Apple do it?

Took 5 years and still got it wrong and quickly fixed by users. This shows why it’s such a bad idea having upper management filled with yes-men that “all believes in the company” and cannot think critically
That's their way of doing things. Do the bare minimum and save as much as you can.
Imagine working for 5 years on this I hope it took thousands of work-hours and meetings to come to this epic conclusion that it can go on the battery icon. What a bunch of winners at life.
its a mind game from apple, everyone knows that they artificially make phones slower with updates so you go buy a new one and this is most likely the exact reason why they did this cringe in the first place and why it took them so long, to force users to update
@@PiMoNFeeD While they may have used to do that, it definitely doesn't happen any more. And I would say I had that exact experience after years of multiple android phones slowing down pretty badly after 2 years of software updates and wear. If you want a phone and can afford it, go iphone because it'll easily last you 5-7 years. If you want a computer in your hand with more freedom go Android. Depends on what you want.
this took one of the biggest companies in the world 5 years, yet a single person could come up with this solution before noon, its pathetic
I love how quick and straight to the point these explanation videos are.
yes but the music is annoying
This was my biggest annoyance when I moved from iPhone 7 to the 12 pro. So much so that I put a battery widget on my 1st screen. Took up screen real estate, but it was better than not knowing exactly how much percentage I had let.
Edit: why are so many of you triggered by my post? It’s simple. I wanted the battery percentage because a quick glance is easier and quicker than swiping down the control center and swiping back back up. I already achieved this with iOS 16 and it’s made everything streamlined. Also, my preference might not be the same as yours. Simple as that. Accept it.
If you update to iOS 16 you can view the battery again
You could still see your battery percentage, it was moved to the control centre
If you use a widget you'd have to go to home screen every time to check the battery, why didn't you just look in the control panel? (one swipe down)
@@ZzPolars yeah I already did. Changed my entire Home Screen layout because of it.
@@tommywatson6806 yeah I know. Didn’t wanna swipe down to see it when I’m usually already at page 1 of my page layout.
I feel sometimes apple implements things just because they want to. They might have had a brainstorming session as to why there shouldn't be any battery percentage indicator on the icon itself. However, when they reintroduced it, the basic thing expected from them was to give a indicative bar and not just a static one. This seems like a rookie mistake. Glad that they rectified it.
I'm going to start being picky, and honestly, I don't like the finished icon at all. The battery at 50% is now half gray, it doesn't look very pretty.
It just moved to control center it was really not as a big deal as you guys made it to be
update the os😁😁😁
Not a rookie mistake, they are just shit like that. They try to do the bare minimum and see if they can get away with it, and many times they do with iPhone sheep.
@@theternal That's why Apple products does not have such basic features: aesthetics over function.
That‘s really the reason why I turned that feature off in iOS 16. I found myself with a low battery occasionally because I thought I had plenty but it was sitting at 30% or less. The new approach on iOS 16.1 looks promising though. It‘s great to see that Apple started to listen to its users more and more.
I don't mind that percentage, the biggest regret of upgrading to iOS16 is that they removed the charging notification at the lock screen when I plug in my phone. Before the update, plugging the phone will trigger the animation of the battery with a notification saying "50% charging", and then display the lock screen with the time.

They changed their mind and it’s coming for all models in 16.1
i myself am an apple user but in my opinion, i think apple purposefully made the battery icon without the percentage the default in order to make the battery life seem longer than it truly is, it would explain the first version of the percentage on iOS 16, it leads you to believe the battery life was longer as you only see it going down overtime rather than you seeing the numbers go down one by one

And since iOS 16 it's back, you can set it to be inside the battery symbol. What annoys me on the 14 Pro Max is that it's just slightly off centre.
Not really
They should just show the number and percent symbol. Give you the choice as you had on older models between that or a visual bar. There was no reason to get rid of the percentage option.
I have to agree. I switched to that initially but switched back to the one without percentage cause of the full batt ruse.
I love how this comes out after they bring it back.
To enable this feature to show your battery percentage, go to settings, click on battery, then turn on the switch that says battery percentage. Your battery percentage should appear above your battery symbol.

Glad they added the percentage back in iOS 16.
Didn't know they added the visual feature in 16.1 until this video. Thanks
Quick to the point and clearly explained. Well job 👍
I have to admit that when they implemented it on iOS 16 I did not turn it on at first. In my opinion I prefer it as it was on the X, and getting it on the control center. Seeing a number causes a lot more stress than seeing a bar.
Damn that stress must be really difficult

At first the battery percentage icon to show was quite relevant towards me as I am in need to keep in track of when to charge my iPhone and when it is about to die, but with the iOS 16 update it does show the battery icon but to be in misleading, however Apple fixes the problem in iOS 16.1 to have the battery drain with the icon’s battery percentage
I honestly prefer the iOS 16 approach. I don't see the point of the visual display and percentage. I just read the percentage.

I’ve also heard that the UX team didn’t want users stressing over percents, constantly checking it. When the percent isn’t there a quick glance let’s you think “I’ve got plenty of charge” and also might reduce user battery anxiety.
wdym? instead, why don't they at least give an option to show the precentage for users who needed it at the first place?. (i'm not an apple haters tho, but i think this is have to be concerned)

Thanks for another amazing video!!!
I’d like to see it color coded. Green at full charge, yellowing and becoming more orange and red as it dies. I don’t care for the battery percentage, but that would be a nice option for visuals, as you could get a better representation at a glance
i mean, when its low without battery saver it's red, with battery saver its yellow, and on charger its green, close enough
I would request you to make a video explanation on why apple removed volume bar on the music banner (on the Lock Screen and notification center). It was there till iOS 15 and simply was helping me to control the volume without touching the volume buttons on the side. I can go forward backwards and control the volume simultaneously and very quickly. But with iOS 16, I am not able to and disappointed
1) It took too much space on the lockscreen.
2) You already have volume buttons on the left side of your phone to adjust the volume.
3) Good riddance!
Never knew they brought it back, thanks for sharing that!
I didnt know about the loss of percentage until this spring when i got my 13. i just used my 6S until 2020 then moved to an SE2. 😅
Apple has always been slow with ui improvements and features dat competitors have been prioritizing. They’ve been focusing on their animations and ecosystem instead, which competitors are improving on now

I had to turn off the battery percentage years ago, it stresses me out way too much
I need 16.1, im just glad they fixed the battery being able to drain with numbers on it
Adding the percentage back is pretty easy.
I think Apple also wanted to remove the exact numbers to have users relax as an exact number gives you more the feeling, how fast your iPhone battery is dropping and that you might need to recharge although you have enough…
Nice that they brought it back in a more cohesive way.
Thanks for the video, I am on ios 16 but don’t know this feature, turned on just now 😁
I’m glad Apple brought this feature back. Android users can’t chat about battery percentage being hidden on iOS now.

The lock screen actually doesn’t show the time by the notch as you can easily see it on the wallpaper.

When I had my old 1st gen. SE, I relied heavily on constantly knowing my battery percentage, and planning around it. Not having the indicator would have been a massive pain. Now that I have my XR, which always lasts a day, maybe two, it’s a relief. Battery is no longer something I have to think about, and without the indicator, I don’t. When I update to iOS 16, I’m disabling it if I can. (Unless it somehow nukes my battery.)
This time you actually made a good point. The battery percentage couldn't fit with the notch.
but they could’ve put the percentage on the battery like iOS 16
Everyone with a functioning brain knew that when the notch was introduced
Isn't that obvious? 🤔
They unfortunately did not bring this new battery percentage icon to the iPhone 13 mini. I was bummed that I couldn’t find it in my mini’s settings but it appeared instantly on the 13 Pro.
They’ll add it to 13 mini in 16.1 releasing next week
they can just rotate the battery icon such that it stands vertically and add a percentage there
I actually prefer no battery percentage on iOS and Android
I worry about it too much and it makes me constantly look up at it. As long as my phone lasts me all day and late into the night, I don’t care what the percentage is really
it's not visible on Android by default either
Exactly. I thought I am the only one lol.
Same! 13 Pro Max doesn't care much except not letting down more than 30%

The short answer is apple likes it simple. If theres a small space, they wont put much in it cause they dont like things looking crammed and unaesthetic.
I do like the way they have reimplemented it, it looks cleaner than most android designs. I for one have my battery percentage off cause it just causes me to check it way to often causing anxiety. So I really like that with iOS 16, even when you have low power mode enabled, it doesn’t force you to see the number anymore on notchless iPhones. I feel like nobody talked about that cause most people prefer it the other way round haha
That cramming is only on the outside try seeeing the inside for once
Completely agree with u 💯
They like it simple, but I don't like it *that* simple, and shouldn't I be the judge of whether or not to include the percentage bar?
I agree with you When I see an android user their top notch looks very cluttered to much going on at once doesn’t look clean. Apple has always been about simplicity and a clean appearance. Which I for one can totally appreciate.

Yeah, it shouldn't have taken 5 years to do this in the first place. We had battery percentage in the battery icon with later versions of Android 4. And Apple didn't do it right for the first time. Most people are still on iOS 16.0 with a difficult to interpret icon.
The user made mockups are horrendous. Glad Apple went the route they did

Honestly, it looks better way this way. The new percentage bar in iOS16 is still good

I honestly don't have a problem with it. I feel like I worry less about the battery ending if I can't see the number.
Still, it's important to many people, took them so long just to copy android.

As someone who uses voice over fairly often on the iPhone, the battery percentage feature never exactly went away because I was always able to hear it spoken to me with the built-in screen reader feature which comes standard on iPhone. Fun fact :-)
The icon's plenty enough to tell if the battery is starting to get low. The battery percentage was never a default anywhere. The percentage is only ever gonna be an estimate as it's impossible to know exactly how much battery you have left.
Also, is it really all that hard to swipe down for control centre? In a single swipe you can see your percentage so I'd consider it an overreaction anyway.
Wdym never default anywhere? Kind of is but why not just give the option it's not that much work and some people will find it very useful.
I use an XR and it’s never really bothered me either. It’s just some days when i just don’t feel like swiping to control center. Either way it’s an option for all users to turn it on or not which is good
I really don't miss it and actually turned it off on my iPhone, but its nice to know its there.
What the hell happened for them to do it after 5 years? Why didn't they do it earlier? Why now?
ah, you see, it's not that they realized they were idiots and went back to a blatantly superiour display style that had been tested and working well for a decade, it's just that they realized everyone else didn't have enough courage to see their brilliance so they dialed it back so that when you bought your mom and iPhone she wouldn't seize up from how courageous it was.
Gotta love how they didn’t release this feature for the iPhone X and 11.

The thing is that the phone can’t know the exact percentage, it just estimates it, just like how we could but with the icon too. Also now with iOS 16 this isn’t a problem anymore, as u said.

I actually like not having the percentage there. I had the percentage show, but i found that it makes me glance up there all the time, and think about my battery all the time too. After removing it, i now just estimate it based on the icon and get a feel about how charged it is, only checking the percentage while its charging so i can unplug it when it’s at about 80%
but thankfully they restored it into the battery icon in ios 16 glad to see it come back and they got rid of those dumb signal circles go back to the bars
